Local residents are expressing their collective outrage and demanding justice for the victim. The authorities are also facing mounting pressure to ensure a thorough investigation and appropriate legal measures against the accused officer.

He announced his candidacy&nbsp;in September, after Kilicdaroglu and the CHP's painful defeat to President Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling political alliance in May presidential and general elections.

Ozel, a pharmacist by trade, received 812 of 1,366 possible votes at a tense, hours-long party congress in Ankara that took two rounds.

"This is the greatest honour of my life," Ozel said after the results were announced, while thanking Kilicdaroglu for his work at the party. "We are embarking on the road for local election victory," he added.

"We have believed in turning hopelessness into hope, we are hopeful," Ozel said, surrounded by applauding party members and standing alongside Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.

Imamoglu supported Ozel in a push for change at the CHP that has long been bogged down by in-fighting. After winning the 2019 municipal elections in Istanbul and ending Erdogan's years-long hold over the city, Imamoglu was seen as a potential new leader for the party and challenger for the presidency.

However, Kilicdaroglu chose to run himself against Erdogan in the May elections, despite several previous losses. After the vote, he came under fire for refusing to step down as the leader of the CHP, established by modern Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Analysts say Kilicdaroglu's refusal to step down or withdraw from the race had hurt his legacy. Ozer Sencar, head of pollster Metropoll, said on X that Ozel's victory could alter the trend of depoliticisation in Turkey following the May elections.

Climate Change is another topic that has gained importance in political arena especially the historic droughts Argentina experienced this year. Amid pre-existing high inflation, the droughts also pushed food prices skywards further.

The issue of abortion rights has also gained political colour. Argentina's Congress legalised abortion up to the 14th week of pregnancy in 2020. Abortion was allowed even beyond the 14th week in case of rape or risk to the mother's health.

The first round of voting took place on October 22. Argentina's current Economy Minister Sergio Massa (51) bagged the top place by bagging 37 per cent votes. Javier Milei (53), a former rock musician and economist, finished second with 30 per cent votes.

Now, the two candidates will face each other in run-off vote next month which will decide who will be the president.

Massa is largely seen as an 'establishment' candidate while Milei is considered an 'outsider' who has been able to command a huge following to be able to become a serious contender for the post of president.

Till recently, Milei was considered a dark horse but his performance in primaries before the first round vote (he finished on top) prompted many to say that he&nbsp;can stage an upset.

Milei favours drastically cutting down public spending by the government. He is against abortion and calls it "murder". He wants to make it easy for people to own guns and even sell organs. He has argued that burning of fossil fuels does not lead to Climate Change. Sergio Massa on the other hand, has an image of a pragmatist. His position as economy minister in Peronist government may make him look bad especially when the inflation is sky-high. Nawaz Sharif, a seasoned politician, is now back in Pakistan and hinted at mending the country’s ties with India, saying “We can’t progress under conflict with the neighbours.” With this comes the question of whether he possesses the clout to resolve the long-standing Kashmir issue with India.&nbsp;

Anil Wadhwa, the former Secretary (East) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), told WION that the three-time Pakistani prime minister may be the “best bet”. Former envoy Wadhwa said, “At the moment, Nawaz Sharif will no doubt concentrate on returning back as prime minister and winning the elections for Pakistan Muslim League.”

However, he noted that “any talk of normalisation in the India relationship during the election campaign will not go down well with the hardliners and the voters.”

During his address to the nation on Saturday (Oct 21) evening, the former PM vouched to tackle the country’s economic crisis. But there was also an unvoiced appeal to people to vote for the PML-N leadership in next year’s general elections.&nbsp;

Ambassador Wadhwa explained, “Nawaz Sharif has the best track record in trying to work towards a rapprochement with India but he was undone by the military on all such occasions. General Pervez Musharraf in fact kept him in the dark over Kargil. The army has controlled him throughout like all other elected representatives. But he may be the best bet amongst Pakistani politicians if the army lets him move on that path.”&nbsp;

For any meaningful progress on the Kashmir issue, Wadhwa said, “Sharif needs to move decisively after coming to power on shutting down training camps and working with the army to maintain the ceasefire along the LoC.”

“Pakistan’s economic situation offers a good alibi to work towards a sustainable ceasefire and peace along the LoC,” he added.&nbsp;

"We are part of a citizen story and what we saw today is a citizen avalanche inside and outside Venezuela," Machado said before the results were announced, referring to voters in the country and abroad.

The 56-year-old engineer and former lawmaker was banned in June from holding any public office for 15 years.

The United States, which this week eased sanctions on Venezuela following the resumption of dialogue between the government and the opposition, is pushing to have her disqualification lifted.

Machado is accused of corruption and of supporting international sanctions against Venezuela.

She is a fervent opponent of Chavism, the brand of populist leftist ideology left behind by former president Hugo Chavez and championed by Maduro.

Machado has said she wants to liberalise the economy, including the privatisation of public companies.

In 2013, Nawaz Sharif and the PML-N won the general elections, and he was re-elected as the Prime Minister for a third term.&nbsp;

Then came the Panama Papers Scandal in 2016 which revealed that Nawaz Sharif's family had acquired luxury apartments in London through offshore companies, leading to investigations and legal proceedings.&nbsp;

In 2017, he was disqualified from office by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif's health concerns led to his departure for London in 2019, where he received medical treatment.&nbsp;

Despite his absence from Pakistan, he continued to wield significant influence within the PML-N and on the nation's politics.

Nawaz Sharif had&nbsp;picked Asim Munir as Pakistan's Army Chief, and a political analyst in his article for an Indian think tank wrote - "The enemy’s enemy is a friend," leaving food for thought.&nbsp;

Imran and Munir have a history marked by controversies.

Former PM Shehbaz Sharif reportedly said that Army Chief Gen Asim Munir was removed as the head of ISI in 2019 by Imran Khan because the spy chief had confronted him with proof of corruption involving his wife.

Munir served as the head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), after being replaced by Lt. Gen Faiz Hameed in 2019 when Khan was at the helm.

Imran-Bajwa combination also could not pull Pakistan out of the economic mess, in fact, pushed it into greater political instability which led to a no-confidence motion being passed with 174 votes in the National Assembly.

Imran Khan's criticism of former General Bajwa also grew.&nbsp;

Imran was earlier seen as an anti-corruption figure and an attractive choice for the military establishment but he was found guilty of not disclosing information on gifts presented to Toshakhana.&nbsp;

He is also facing charges of violating the Official Secrets Act by disclosing a secret diplomatic cable (cipher case) sent by the country's embassy in Washington in March last year.&nbsp;

<h2>Future&nbsp;</h2>

The PML-N's performance in the next general elections will be crucial for Sharif. The party will need to win over the supporters of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).&nbsp;

Michael Kugelman, Director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/exclusive-imran-khans-arrest-and-future-of-pakistans-pti-party-623991">told WION </a>after Imran Khan's arrest that PTI without Imran could make electoral gains "if its remaining leadership is able to improve ties with the military." With Imran lodged inside the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi in Pakistan's Punjab, the return of Nawaz Sharif changes everything.

Pakistani voters have no choice.&nbsp;

But at the same time, Nawaz Sharif's past conflicts with the military establishment remain to be a pivotal factor in Pakistani politics. Any future involvement in politics would mean Sharif needs to navigate cautiously.

There are two possibilities. Sharif's return to Pakistan could lead to efforts at political reconciliation or further polarisation in the country.&nbsp;

Once one of the richest countries in the world, Argentina has stagnated in recent decades, unable to escape cycles of fiscal crises marked by debt, financial mismanagement, and inflation which now stands at 140 percent year-on-year.

With 40 per cent of the population living in poverty and a middle-class brought to its knees, many voters are keen to see the back of the traditional parties they see as the architects of their misery.

"It's total uncertainty -- you never know if your rent will go up, (or) prices in the supermarket. It's madness," said university student Valentin Figarra, 20. "One wants to grow... but this generation is falling behind, it's sad."

Milei, a libertarian economist who formed his party Libertad Avanza (Freedom Advances) only in 2021, blindsided most experts and pollsters when he surged to the front of the election race, winning a primary with 30 percent of votes.

The self-described "anarcho-capitalist" with disheveled hair and a rock-star persona has lured voters with his diatribes on television and social media -- where he vows to "dynamite" the central bank and ditch the peso for the US dollar.

He has run his campaign on TikTok and YouTube and showed up at live rallies with an actual powered-up chainsaw vowing to slash public spending by 15 percent.

<h2>'Already broken'&nbsp;</h2>

Political science student Agustin Baletti, 22, said he will be voting for Milei because past governments have "left young people without hope."

"Everything is already broken. Milei isn't going to break anything."

While Milei has topped opinion polls, these have not proved reliable in the past, and analysts say anything can happen between the three frontrunners out of five total candidates.&nbsp;

Charismatic Economy Minister Sergio Massa represents the ruling center-left Peronist coalition, a populist movement heavy on state intervention and welfare programs that has dominated Argentine politics for decades but has grown deeply unpopular.

Having overseen the country's recent economic pains, he has been an easy punching bag for his rivals.

To woo voters, Massa has gone on a pre-election spending spree, slashing income tax for much of the population in a move analysts say will only make the country's fragile financial situation worse.

To counter Milei, his government has taken pains to explain to voters what a loss of key subsidies that keep public transport and electricity, among others, dirt cheap, will mean.

<h2>'Highly incompetent'&nbsp;</h2>

The other frontrunner is the stern and tough-talking Patricia Bullrich, a former security minister who has also vowed radical change from the overspending, money-printing Peronists and their strict currency controls.

Bullrich served in the government of former president Mauricio Macri (2015-2019), a pro-market, non-Peronist who failed in his promise to contain spending and took out a record $44 billion loan with the International Monetary Fund, which has bailed Argentina out 22 times despite several massive defaults.

Irene Landa, 70, a psychoanalyst said she believes Bullrich is the "most coherent" of the lot.

"Milei, to me, it would be like giving a revolver to a monkey," Landa said. "But I think people are so fed up, so tired, that they believe in what he says."

Voters are fed up with "politicians who have been highly corrupt, highly incompetent, who have never paid attention to something we learn in high school, that you shouldn't spend more than you earn," said Buenos Aires-based economist Andres Borenstein.

Argentina's 35,8 million registered voters will be able to cast their ballots from 8am local time (1100 GMT) to 6pm (2100 GMT).

Preliminary results are expected on Sunday evening.

To avoid a runoff election on November 19, a candidate needs to win 45 percent of the vote Sunday, or 40 percent with a difference of 10 points or more over the nearest rival.
