Scientists say that they have observed a dying star swallowing a planet for the first time, offering a preview of Earth's expected fate in around five billion years. Astronomers had previously seen the before-and-after effects of this process, but had never before caught a planet in the act of being consumed.

<p>"If it's any consolation, this will happen in about 5 billion years," said Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics' co-author Morgan MacLeod.</p>

<p>The galactic feast took place between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago close to the Aquila constellation after the star completed its 10 billion years. After the planet went down the stellar hatch, a swift hot outburst of light took place and a long-lasting stream of dust was seen which shined brightly in cold infrared energy, the researchers stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers have earlier seen signs of stars nibbling at planets and decoded the aftermath of gobbling, however, it was the first time they saw the act of swallowing, as per the study which appeared in the journal Nature.</p>

<p>The luminous outburst was spotted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Kishalay De while reviewing sky scans which were captured by the California Institute of Technology's Palomar Observatory. Data crunching and additional observations were needed to unravel the mystery which revealed that the star, instead of eating up its companion star, gobbled up its planet.</p>

<p>The discoveries made are "very plausible," stated Carole Haswell, an astrophysicist at Britain's Open University. Haswell had headed a team in 2010 which used the Hubble Space Telescope to spot the star WASP-12 which was eating its planet.</p>

<p>"This is a different sort of eating. This star gobbled a whole planet in one gulp. In contrast, WASP-12 b and the other hot Jupiters we have previously studied are being delicately licked and nibbled," Haswell said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now that the researchers have figured out what they need to look out for, they will try finding more cosmic gulps. The researchers feel that thousands of planets may suffer a similar fate, and something similar may occur in our solar system.&nbsp;</p>

For an Earth-like planet, this process could wipe out a significant portion of ozone, which ultimately protects life from the dangerous ultraviolet radiation of its host star,” said Ian Brunton of the University of Illinois, in a statement. Brunton led the study that culminated with the detection of a new threat which may lead to the extinction of humans from Earth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Around 31 supernovae and their aftermath in deep space were observed by astronomers to reveal that lethal doses of radiation will reach the planet which is located around 160 light-years away. The telescopes on supernova 1979C, SN 1987A, SN 2010jl, and SN 1994I were targeted by the team.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Researchers stated that after years of exposure to lethal X-rays from the supernova's explosion and ultraviolet radiation's impact from a planet’s host star, a huge amount of nitrogen dioxide is produced which leads to brown haze in the atmosphere.</p>

<p>The findings of astronomers have been published in the journal Nature Astronomy. "Whether a planet survives with an atmosphere or not can depend on whether the planet has a strong magnetic field or not," Pineda explained.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The radio signal was first isolated by Villadsen while she poured over data at her home on a weekend. "We saw the initial burst and it looked beautiful," Pineda said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists found fossilised seaweed that was unearthed in black shale in China's Hubei province. Based on their observations scientists think that habitable marine environments were more widespread on "Snowball Earth"&nbsp;than previously thought.</p>

<p>The findings support the idea that it was more of a "Slushball Earth" where the earliest forms of complex life - basic multicellular organisms - endured even at mid-latitudes previously thought to have been frozen solid.</p>

<p>The fossils date from the second of the two times during the Cryogenian Period when massive ice sheets stretched from the poles toward the equator. This interval, called the Marinoan Ice Age, lasted from about 651 million to 635 million years ago.</p>

<p>"The key finding of this study is that open-water - ice-free - conditions existed in mid-latitude oceanic regions during the waning stage of the Marinoan Ice Age," said China University of Geosciences geobiologist Huyue Song, lead author of the research published in the journal Nature Communications.</p>

<p>"Our study shows that, at least near the end of the Marinoan 'Snowball Earth' event, habitable areas extended to mid-latitude oceans, much larger than previously thought. Previous research argued that such habitable areas, at best, only existed in tropical oceans. More extensive areas of habitable oceans better explain where and how complex organisms such as multicellular seaweed survived," Song added.</p>

<p>The findings demonstrate that the world's oceans were not completely frozen and that habitable refuges existed where multicellular eukaryotic organisms - the domain of life including plants, animals, fungi and certain mostly single-celled organisms called protists - could survive, Song said.</p>

<p>Asteroid 2023 FA7, which is 92 feet, will fly near the Earth on April 4 at a distance of 2,250,000 km. Asteroid 2023 FQ7, which is a 65-foot house-sized asteroid, will approach the Earth on April 5.</p>

<p>Comets and asteroids, which are likely to make comparatively close approaches to Earth, are being tracked by NASA's Asteroid Watch dashboard.</p>

NASA issues warning over giant 150-foot asteroid that will pass by Earth on April 6

<p>A massive black hole has been spotted by space agency NASA on the Sun, which is 20 times bigger than the Earth and can blast powerful solar storms towards the planet, as per reports.</p>

<p>The region named "coronal hole" looks like the empty space on the Sun's surface. After spotting the hole, an alert was issued by US federal agency National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for geomagnetic storms.</p>

<p>The “coronal hole” is not exactly a hole but a wide region which is comparatively cooler than the rest of the Sun's surface and hence, is appearing black.</p>

<p>“Coronal holes are magnetically open areas that are one source of high-speed solar wind. They appear dark when viewed in many wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light. At times, the solar wind can generate aurora at higher latitudes on Earth,” NASA explained.</p>

<p>According to a report published by news.com.au, solar winds of 2.9 million kmph are being unleashed by the gaping hole towards Earth, which may hit our planet on Friday (March 31).</p>

<p>Scientists are monitoring the situation to asses how these solar winds will impact our planet, the report said. Charged particles, which continuously flow from the Sun, impact the satellites, GPS, magnetic field and mobile phones on the Earth.</p>

<p>NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) discovered the coronal hole on March 23 near the Sun's South Pole. "The current coronal hole, the big one right now, is about 300,000 to 400,000 kilometres across. That is about 20-30 Earths lined up back-to-back," said Alex Young, who works at NASA Goddard's Heliophysics Science Division, while speaking to Business Insider.</p>

<h2><strong>Solar storm may hit Earth</strong></h2>

<p>University College London's Associate Professor of Space and Climate Physics Daniel Verscharen said that Earth may be hit by a geomagnetic storm which is coming towards the planet at a speed of about 1.8 million miles per hour.</p>

<p>Blazars are very high energy objects and are considered to be one of the most powerful phenomena in the universe.</p>

<p>Researchers have said that the galaxy now stretches nearly 4 million light-years across — nearly 40 times the size of the Milky Way.</p>

<p>“We started to study this galaxy as it showed peculiar properties,” spokesperson, Dr Lorena Hernández-García said.</p>

<p>"Our hypothesis was that the relativistic jet of its supermassive black hole&nbsp;had changed its direction, and to confirm that idea we had to carry out a lot of observations.”</p>

<p>“The fact that we see the nucleus is not feeding the lobes anymore means that they are very old. They are the relics of past activity, whereas the structures located closer to the nucleus represent younger and active jets.”</p>

<p>The scientists discovered the space rock, named 2023 DZ2, a month ago.</p>

<p>As predicted by astronomers, the asteroid flew past the Earth from a distance of 175,000km on Saturday after passing across the Moon.</p>

<p>This is one rare occasion when such a massive asteroid – which has been estimated to be between 40 and 90 m in diameter – passes from such a close distance to the planet.</p>

<p>"There is no chance of this 'city killer' striking Earth, but its close approach offers a great opportunity for observations," European Space Agency's planetary defence chief Richard Moissl said.</p>

<p>Moissl added that, according to the preliminary data, 2023 DZ2 was "a scientifically interesting object". However, he added that they needed more data to determine the composition of the asteroid.</p>

<p>Since the asteroid passed so close to the Earth, it was visible through small telescopes and binoculars across the globe.</p>

<p>The Virtual Telescope Project provided a live web broadcast of the asteroid's approach.</p>

<p>The space rock is likely to return towards the orbit of Earth in 2026, however, scientists have ruled out any threat to Earth even during its return.</p>

<p>Earlier an asteroid of similar size named, 2023 DW, was predicted to have a one-in-432 chance of crashing on Earth's surface on Valentine's Day 2046.</p>

<p>In 2022, a pyramid-sized asteroid Dimorphos was deliberately slammed by NASA's Dart (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft.</p>

<p>Before the impact of Dart, Dimorphos took 11 hours and 55 minutes to orbit around Didymos, its larger parent asteroid.</p>

<p>For astronomers with the International Asteroid Warning Network, this chance encounter with the “city killer” asteroid will provide valuable information on how to deal with them in the future, NASA said in a tweet.</p>

<p>IPCC released the final part of its mammoth <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/assessment-report/ar6/">sixth assessment report</a> on Monday. The IPCC consists of the world's leading climate scientists, who have issued a "final warning" on the deteriorating climate crisis. The IPCC, an intergovernmental body of the UN charged with advancing scientific knowledge about man-made climate change, has prepared detailed assessment reports about climate change amid a continuous rise in greenhouse gas emissions which have started to cause visible and irrevocable damage to the planet earth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report talks about causes, potential impacts and response options to tackle global warming and noted that only swift and drastic action can avert the situation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>IPCC said there is also a 50-50 chance that "by 2030, global surface temperature in any individual year could exceed 1.5C" in the a report synthesising its major findings over the last six years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said: "This report is a clarion call to massively fast-track climate efforts by every country and every sector and on every timeframe. Our world needs climate action on all fronts: everything, everywhere, all at once."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The UN report said the last eight years' record-breaking temperatures will figure among the coolest within three or four decades as global temperatures climb, even if planet-warming emissions drop quickly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London and lead author of the UN's climate advisory panel said: "The warmest years we have experienced to date will be among the coolest within a generation."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Guterres said: "This is the moment for all G20 members to come together in a joint effort, pooling their resources and scientific capacities as well as their proven and affordable technologies through the public and private sectors to make carbon neutrality a reality by 2050."&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the auction house, the skeleton, named 'Trinity' stands tall at 3.9 metres and is currently valued between $6.5-$8.7 million (Eight million Swiss francs). Experts, however, believe that the figure is rather conservative and that it may go up as the auction date approaches.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The sale becomes all the more important as only 32 skeletons of adult T-Rex's - one of the largest apex predators to have ever walked the face of the Earth - had been discovered worldwide.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Trinity has been composed using the bone material of three T-Rex specimens. They were excavated between 2008-2013 in the US states of Montana and Wyoming. The Hell Creek and Lance Creek formations in the respective states are well-known for the discoveries of two other T-Rex skeletons to have gone under the hammer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>By law, such specimens can only be sold if the fossil was discovered on private land, which in this case it was. The auctioneers stated that Trinity was provided by a private individual and had been flown to Switzerland in nine large crates to be assembled.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The Zurich auction is therefore an exceptional opportunity to acquire such a fossil of the highest quality," said the auction house.&nbsp;</p>

<p>T-Rex is one of the most fascinating reptiles of yore. Its huge size, scary teeth and sharp claws make it unique and collector's favourite. Notably, in 2020, a T-Rex skeleton nicknamed 'Stan' was sold for a whopping $31.8 million in New York.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It then shredded the previous record set by a specimen called Sue that was sold for $8.4 million in October 1997 by Sotheby's to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.</p>
