<p>2023 DW stands as the only asteroid present on the list which has a score of 1 on the Torino scale, which is used to measure the chances of the space object impacting the Earth. All other objects have 0 ratings.</p>

<p>Level 1 is indicative of the fact that the chances of an asteroid colliding with the earth are “extremely unlikely with no cause for public attention or public concern,” the Centre for Near Earth Object Studies stated.</p>

<p>“New telescopic observations very likely will lead to re-assignment to Level 0,” it added.</p>

<p>The research team is from European South Observatory (ESO). The team made use of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile to observe a planet forming disc around the star named V883 Orionis.</p>

<p>A star begins to form when large amount of dust and gas suddenly begins to collapse and forms a protostar. As the star formation progresses, the material around the protostar begins to revolve around it and over the course of millions of years, may form planets, asteroids and even comets which become part of the star system.</p>

<p>There are large amount of water molecules in this material in the planet-forming disc around the star.</p>

<p>The research team measured the chemical signature of the water content in this disc. This chemical signature gives us the idea where and when the water was formed.</p>

<p>For example, a chemical signature of the water found in a comet is similar to that on Earth, it may be said that comets could have delivered water to our planet.</p>

<p>“V883 Orionis is the missing link in this case. The composition of the water in the disc is very similar to that of comets in our own Solar System. This is confirmation of the idea that the water in planetary systems formed billions of years ago, before the Sun, in interstellar space, and has been inherited by both comets and Earth, relatively unchanged,” said John J. Tobin, an astronomer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, USA and lead author of the study published in the journal Nature.</p>

<p>The study states that the newly-detected centre is a 644-kilometre-wide ball of metal with the composition of iron-nickel alloy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The fact that this ball had not been detected previously could be attributed to the simple fact that its outer layer is also composed of a similar iron-nickel alloy with trace amounts of other elements.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With the Earth's core impossibly hot, it is difficult to reach anywhere near it. Thus, scientists use seismology to gauge what lies in the innards of our home planet.</p>

<p>After any earthquake seismic waves travel across the Earth, changing their path and orientation when passing through different materials. This allows the geophysicists to decipher what lies at Earth's rather mysterious core.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists involved in the study used a similar process to ascertain their findings.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In this study, for the first time, we report observations of seismic waves originating from powerful earthquakes traveling back and forth from one side of the globe to the other up to five times like a ricochet,” said Dr Thanh-Son Phạm, one of the coauthors of the study.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Additionally, the transition from the innermost (solid) ball to the outer shell of the inner core (also solid shell) seems rather gradational than sharp, That is why we cannot observe it via direct reflections of seismic waves from it.”</p>

According to new research published in the journal Nature Communications on Tuesday, it has been posited that our planet has a distinct ball of iron within its metallic core. The study states that the newly-detected centre is a 644-kilometre-wide ball of metal with the composition of iron-nickel alloy. The fact that this ball had not been detected previously could be attributed to the simple fact that its outer layer is also composed of a similar iron-nickel alloy with trace amounts of other elements. Thus, scientists use seismology to gauge what lies in the innards of our home planet. After any earthquake seismic waves travel across the Earth, changing their path and orientation when passing through different materials. <p>The planet that has been spotted now is almost the size of Earth. Only 1.36 times bigger. The planet has been named Wolf 1069b. It is just 31 light-years away from us. The planet has been found by a team led by Diana Kossakowski of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Germany.</p>

<p>"When we analysed the data of the star Wolf 1069, we discovered a clear, low-amplitude signal of what appears to be a planet of roughly Earth mass," Kossakowski says.</p>

<p>"It orbits the star within 15.6 days at a distance equivalent to one-fifteenth of the separation between the Earth and the Sun."</p>

Scientists find Earth-like exoplanet in a habitable zone around its star

<p>In one of the closest encounters ever recorded, a delivery-truck size asteroid passed by Earth coming as close as a tenth of the distance of the orbit of communication satellites. Known as 2023 BU, it flew over the southern tip of South America just before 00:30 am GMT.</p>

<p>With a closest approach of 3,600 km (2,200 miles), it was too close for comfort.</p>

<p>According to NASA, the asteroid instead of circling around the sun every 359 days, will remain for 425 days in an oval orbit.</p>

<p>The green comet was calculated to orbit the sun every 50,000 years which means the last time the comet tore past our planet was in the time of the Neanderthals. The comet comes from the Oort cloud and gets its beautiful green glow from diatomic carbon (pairs of carbon atoms that are bound together) that is present in the comet's head. When the ultraviolet rays of solar radiation fall on the comet, these molecules emit green light.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The comet was visible last month as well however the glow was not much due to the large distance from our home planet. Astronomers captured pictures which showed the head of the comet's body, its long more tenuous ion and a dust tail. However, as it is set to approach the earth, the comet will be glowing more and can be seen from the naked eye.&nbsp;</p>

Rare comet that was last seen 50,000 years ago to fly past Earth

<p>Fred White, who was a drummer in the popular US band Earth, Wind &amp; Fire, has left for his heavenly abode. He was&nbsp;67.</p>

<p>On Monday, his&nbsp;brother announced the sad news via a social media post.&nbsp;"Child protege, member of the EWF ORIGINAL 9, with gold records at the young age of 16 years old!" White's older brother wrote.</p>

<p>"Our family is saddened today with the loss of an amazing and talented family member," another&nbsp;White's brother, Verdine, said in an Instagram post.</p>

<p>Born in 1955 in Chicago, White began drumming at an early age and went on to win six Grammy awards with the funk band, founded in 1969 by his brother, the late Maurice White.</p>

<p>Earth, Wind &amp; Fire quickly rose to fame in the 1970s, becoming one of the early acts to break the colour barrier in pop music, winning a white fanbase while remaining favourites within the African American community.</p>

<p>In 1979, the band became the first Black act to sell out New York's Madison Square Garden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The group won acclaim not only for songwriting but for its energetic live shows, led by a forceful horn section and featuring a kalimba, an African percussion instrument played by plucking metal tines.</p>

<p>While never disappearing completely, Earth, Wind &amp; Fire enjoyed a career resurgence after the election of former president Barack Obama, who invited the band as one of the first entertainers when he entered the White House in 2009.</p>

<p>The band's official Instagram page posted a video of White performing a drum solo at a 1979 concert in Germany. "Rest in love," the group wrote.</p>

<p>He went on to work with other performers, including soul singer Deniece Williams.</p>

<p>White, as a member of Earth, Wind &amp; Fire,&nbsp;was inducted in 2000 into the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame.</p>

Earth, Wind & Fire quickly rose to fame in the 1970s, becoming one of the early acts to break the colour barrier in pop music, winning a white fanbase while remaining favourites within the African American community. In 1979, the band became the first Black act to sell out New York's Madison Square Garden. The group won acclaim not only for songwriting but for its energetic live shows, led by a forceful horn section and featuring a kalimba, an African percussion instrument played by plucking metal tines. While never disappearing completely, Earth, Wind & Fire enjoyed a career resurgence after the election of former president Barack Obama, who invited the band as one of the first entertainers when he entered the White House in 2009. The band's official Instagram page posted a video of White performing a drum solo at a 1979 concert in Germany. "Rest in love," the group wrote. <p>A new observation of a planet spiralling into a dying star may help us understand and predict what can be the Earth's fate when the only star that sustains it begins to die.</p>

<p>In a new study published on Monday (December 19), a team of mostly US-based researchers said they hope the doomed exoplanet Kepler-1658b can help shed light on how worlds die as their stars get older.</p>

<p>Kepler-1658b, which is 2,600 light years from Earth, is known as a "hot Jupiter" planet.</p>

<p>The planet is similar in size to Jupiter. However, it revolves around its dying star in an orbit one-eighth the distance between Mercury and the Sun. This makes it far hotter than Jupiter in our Solar System.</p>

<p>Kepler-1658b's orbit around its host star takes less than three days -- and it is getting shorter by around 131 milliseconds a year, according to the study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.</p>

<p>"If it continues spiralling towards its star at the observed rate, the planet will collide with its star in less than three million years," said Shreyas Vissapragada, a postdoc at the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the study's lead author.</p>

<p>"This is the first time we've observed direct evidence for a planet spiralling towards its evolved star," he told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So could Earth be heading towards a similar doom?</p>

<p>"Death-by-star is a fate thought to await many worlds and could be the Earth's ultimate adios billions of years from now as our Sun grows older," the Center for Astrophysics said in a statement.<br />

Vissapragada said that "in five billion years or so, the Sun will evolve into a red giant star".&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the tidally-driven processes seen on Kepler-1658b "will drive the decay of the Earth's orbit towards the Sun," that effect could be counter-balanced by the Sun losing mass, he said.</p>

<p>"The ultimate fate of the Earth is somewhat unclear," he added.</p>

<p>Kepler-1658b was the first exoplanet ever observed by the Kepler space telescope, which launched in 2009. However it took nearly a decade of work before the planet's existence was confirmed in 2019, the Center for Astrophysics said.</p>

<p>Over 13 years, astronomers were able to observe the slow but steady change in the planet's orbit as it crossed the face of its host star.</p>

<p>As per the reports, the exact origin of‌ the shockwave is not known. But the astronomers did mention that it could be a coronal mass ejection (CME), which is an ejection of energetic and highly magnetised, superheated gas released from the sun.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per reports, astronomers have also warned that such a powerful shockwave could damage the solar winds flow through, eventually disrupting the communications and electrical equipment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The shockwave could have been launched from a region on the sun's surface, known as AR3165. After its launch, the CMEs can travel at speeds in the millions of miles per hour. With their high speed, they carry charged particles from the solar wind to form a wavefront that can trigger geomagnetic storms.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cold blooded insects are more susceptible to ill effects of climate change as they do not have the ability to change their body temperature in accordance with changing external temperature.&nbsp;</p>

<p>US Department of Defense has supported the research.</p>

<p>"We needed a modeling tool to understand how insect populations will be affected by variations in temperature," said &nbsp;Dr Kate Duffy, a former postdoctoral researcher at NASA's Ames Research Centre.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"And that's what we aimed to offer with this study: a more direct and accurate way for scientists to understand this dynamic," she added.</p>
