As we go about living our daily life, the magnetic lines of force stretch and wrap around Earth and form a protective shield that guards us against deadly cosmic radiation and even charged solar particles. Of many things from Earth's bounty nurturing&nbsp;life, its magnetic field is one of the most important one.

The silent protector has now spoken, not in a language that we would understand but in eerie tones that remind us that celestial processes mean business.&nbsp;

We need not worry. It is still the benevolent, protective shield that keeps us safe. But that doesn't reduce the scary quotient of the sound.

The tremendous distance between the Earth and the moon was underscored in the first of the two Earth photos, which Lucy captured on October 13. According to a news statement from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), the two bodies sitting at the frame's opposite edges were approximately 890,000 km away.

The pictures displayed a viewpoint that was recognisable to spectators on Earth since they were obtained while Lucy was halfway between the Earth and the moon, at a distance of around 160,000 miles (260,000 km) from the moon.

In 2021, NASA's Lucy probe was launched. It is the first mission to the two swarms of space rocks known as the Jupiter Trojan asteroids, which orbit the enormous planet alongside it.

He heads the&nbsp;Space Astronomy Group (SAG) of ISRO's UR Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru, and had contributed to ISRO mission such as Chandrayaan 1 &amp;2, AstroSat, in several capacities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr&nbsp;Sankarasubramanian has a&nbsp;PhD in Physics from Bangalore University through the Indian Institute&nbsp;of Astrophysics, Bengaluru. His research's areas of interest are the solar magnetic field, optics, and instrumentation. The Space Astronomy Group (SAG) which he heads is involved in developing scientific payloads for the upcoming missions of Aditya-L1, XPoSat, and science payload onboard the Chandrayaan-3 propulsion module.&nbsp;

He is also the Principal Investigator for one of the X-ray payloads onboard Aditya-L1. Dr&nbsp;Sankarasubramanian K also heads the Aditya-L1 Science Working Group, which has members from several institutes of India engaged in solar science research.&nbsp;

Aditya-L1 is the first observatory-class space-based solar mission from India and is said to be scheduled for launch in 2023. The spacecraft will be placed in a halo orbit around the first Lagrange point, L1, of the Sun-Earth system. A satellite around the L1 point has the major advantage of continuously viewing the Sun without occultation/eclipses. This position provides a greater advantage of observing solar activities continuously.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Aditya-L1 carries seven payloads to observe the photosphere, chromosphere, and the outermost layers of the Sun (the corona) using electromagnetic and particle detectors. According to ISRO, four payloads on Aditya-L1 directly view the Sun from the unique vantage point of L1, and the remaining three payloads carry out in-situ studies of particles and fields at the Lagrange point L1.&nbsp;

Didier Patrick Queloz, the Swiss astronomer who won the Nobel Prize for discovering an extrasolar planet orbiting a sun-like star, would be in the city on October 20 as part of a lecture series organised by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M). Didier Queloz was born in Switzerland and studied at the University of Geneva, where he also received a doctorate in 1995. In the same year, Queloz and his supervisor Michel Mayor announced the first discovery of a planet outside our solar system, an exoplanet, orbiting a solar-type star in our home galaxy, the Milky Way. Using custom-made instruments, they were able to see planet '51 Pegasi b', in the Pegasus constellation and this work earned them the Nobel Prize in 2019. Since then, over 4,000 exoplanets have since been found in the Milky Way. Eventually, such studies may find an answer to the eternal question of whether other life exists out there. Since 2008, Queloz has been a professor at the University of Geneva and since 2012 at the University of Cambridge as well. A 170-metre (560 feet) wide&nbsp;asteroid named Dimorphos is about to hit the Earth on September 26 at 23.14 GMT (7.14 pm. EDT), NASA scientists have warned.

But, no worries, as the US space agency is planning to alter its course away from the Earth with its $330 million Dart robot spacecraft.

The spacecraft, which weighs around half-tonne, will be travelling at more than four miles (6.4 km) per second to collide with Dimorphos, which will be about 6.8 million miles (10.9 million km) from Earth at the time of impact.

DART, which has been designed to operate fully autonomously, will be unmanned for the mission.

Though the scientists have deemed the asteroid to be of “no threat”, the main aim of launching this mission is to demonstrate its capability in preventing any potential asteroid Armageddon.

They say that observations of the Dart spacecraft’s impact on Dimorphos’s orbit will provide crucial data about how well spacecraft can protect Earth from asteroid attack.

Lindley Johnson, the director of NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office, said the DART mission does not reflect a change in the policy of the space agency’s thinking about hazardous objects, rather a continuation of the work done so far.

"Our charter from the beginning has been not only to find asteroids, but to work on the technology and techniques that can be used to deflect an asteroid from an impact trajectory, should we ever find one," he told Space.com.

"DART is just a first test in what we see as an ongoing programme.”

The Italian Space Agency satellite called the Light Italian CubeSat for Imaging of Asteroids will record the first full-scale demonstration of asteroid deflection technology.

Following this,&nbsp;the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2024 will send its Hera spacecraft on a two-year journey to examine the aftermath of the collision.

"By the time Hera reaches Didymos, in 2026, Dimorphos will have achieved historic significance: the first object in the Solar System to have its orbit shifted by human effort in a measurable way,” the ESA said.

NASA prepares for DART mission launch as asteroid approaches Earth. Here's all you need to know

An opportunity to observe this gentle giant in clearest manner possible is just around the corner. This is because planet Jupiter is going to come closest to Earth in last 70 years.

The closest approach is going to take place on September 26, says NASA.

"Stargazers can expect excellent views of Jupiter the entire night of Monday, Sept. 26 when the giant planet reaches opposition," said NASA in a blog post.

An 'opposition' happens, from Earth's viewpoint, when a celestial object rises in East as the Sun sets in the West. This puts the Sun and the object exactly opposite to each other.

Jupiter's opposition happens every 13 months. At this time the planet appears brighter and larger than usual.

“But that’s not all. Jupiter will also make its closest approach to Earth in the last 70 years!," NASA said.

This time, Jupiter's opposition has coincided with its closest approach to Earth. This is something rare.

Jupiter will be 365 million miles from Earth at the time of its closet approach.

The eccentricity of Jupiter's orbit is low because it is nearly circular. It is quite logical to imagine that if Jupiter's orbit is tweaked in any manner, the planet with massive gravity will have an effect on orbits of other planets in the Solar System

Researchers from University of California, Riverside have published a study in which they say that if Jupiter's orbit becomes 'eccentric', it may have a positive impact on the habitability on Earth.

“Many are convinced that Earth is the epitome of a habitable planet and that any change in Jupiter’s orbit, being the massive planet it is, could only be bad for Earth,” says Pam Vervoort, lead author of the study

“We show that both assumptions are wrong.”

The study says that the change in Jupiter's orbit would change the eccentricity of orbit of the Earth. This would result in melting of ice to some extent and these regions would be more habitable.

The study has been published in The Astronomical Journal.

The process used by the researchers to understand the trajectory of Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) like this asteroid has developed considerably over the last few years. The NASA system currently boasts of an accuracy percentage of around 90 when it comes to objects which are 140 meters or larger.

The objects are tracked with the help of the NEOWISE Project – an updated version of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer which can effectively find NEOs within a certain distance, according to Live Science. This is also the system that has detected all the latest space activities around the planet.

The planets are known as LP 890-9b, previously discovered but with little information, and LP 890-9c, also known as SPECULOOS-2c.&nbsp;

Beyond its size and the eight days, it needs to orbit its star, LP 890-9, also known as SPECULOOS 2, very little is known about SPECULOOS-2c. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) could provide more information about whether or not the object has an atmosphere and what it contains, according to Amaury Triaud and his colleagues at the University of Birmingham in the UK, who first noticed it.

This may reveal whether or not the planet is capable of supporting life. The absence of extreme heat or cold indicates that the area is in the habitable zone orbiting a star, where liquid water may be present on the surface.&nbsp;

Astronomers can watch for a star's light diminishing as a planet passes in front of it, obstructing our view, to locate planets in distant solar systems. The planets are rather dim, making it difficult to accomplish this when the host star is as luminous as our sun, but it is simpler if the host star is cooler and dimmer, like red dwarfs.

SPECULOOS 2c orbits its star in just 8.4 days and has a radius that is 30 to 40% greater than Earth's. It is also tidally locked, which means that on one side it is always day and on the other, it is always night. Despite these variations, the team believes it to be the second most habitable planet discovered outside of our solar system, behind TRAPPIST-1e and speculates that it still might have liquid water on its surface.

TRAPPIST 1e seemed to have the best chance of becoming an ocean world like Earth.

"The team has since located the source of the garbled information: The AACS had started sending the telemetry data through an onboard computer known to have stopped working years ago, and the computer corrupted the information," Nasa has said in an update.

Voyager-1 is so far away from the Earth that a signal from the probe takes 21 hours 45 minutes 45 seconds to reach Earth. And even with best of equipments here on Earth, a signal takes same amount of time to reach Voyager.&nbsp;

It's good news anyway that humanity's herald is back in good shape.

“We’re happy to have the telemetry back. We’ll do a full memory readout of the AACS and look at everything it’s been doing. That will help us try to diagnose the problem that caused the telemetry issue in the first place. So, we’re cautiously optimistic, but we still have more investigation to do,” Suzanne Dodd, Voyager’s project manager, said in a statement.

NASA engineers repair spacecraft that's 14 billion miles away from Earth

Harvard Professor Avi Loeb and student Amir Siraj&nbsp;have charted a plan to fish out an interstellar meteorite from the seabed of the Pacific Ocean using a giant magnet.&nbsp;It may sound like a scene&nbsp;straight out of a wild sci-fi movie but the duo, under their&nbsp;$1.6 million Galileo Project are serious about the potential of the project, which they have claimed is cheaper than sending a spacecraft outside the solar system.&nbsp;

Talking about their plan, Siraj stated&nbsp;that they will be using the meteorite's ferrous properties to fetch it out.&nbsp;

"Most meteorites contain enough iron that they will stick to the type of magnet we plan on using for the ocean expedition.&nbsp;Given its extremely high material strength, it is very likely that the fragments of CNEOS 2014-01-08 are ferromagnetic." said Siraj.&nbsp;

According to the project blueprint, the Galileo Project's ship would carry a magnetic sled on a longline winch. The sled will be lunged 1.7 kilometres into the seabed and attempt to sweep the floor and collect even the tiny fragments of the meteorite, measuring as tiny as 0.004 inches.

It is pertinent to note that the object named&nbsp;CNEOS 2014-01-08 paid a visit to Earth in 2014 and crashed into the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Papua New Guinea. What makes the meteorite special is that it is classed as an interstellar object, meaning it came from outside the solar system.&nbsp;

Both Loeb and&nbsp;Siraj&nbsp;came to the conclusion that the object was interstellar by using data to calculate the velocity and trajectory of the object. According to them, the object was travelling at a speed of&nbsp;60 kilometres&nbsp;per second which is much faster than an object that originates in the solar system.&nbsp;

"At the Earth's distance from the sun, any object travelling faster than about 42 kilometres per second&nbsp;is on an unbounded, hyperbolic escape trajectory relative to the sun. So it [CNEOS 2014-01-08] must have originated from outside of the solar system" said Siraj.&nbsp;

To this date, only three interstellar objects have been observed by humankind. However, it will be the first time that one can lay a hand on one and use it to figure out secrets of our universe.&nbsp;

"Finding such a fragment would represent the first contact humanity has ever had with material larger than dust from beyond the solar system," added Siraj.

Talking about their plan, Siraj stated that they will be using the meteorite's ferrous properties to fetch it out. "Most meteorites contain enough iron that they will stick to the type of magnet we plan on using for the ocean expedition. Given its extremely high material strength, it is very likely that the fragments of CNEOS 2014-01-08 are ferromagnetic." said Siraj. The sled will be lunged 1.7 kilometres into the seabed and attempt to sweep the floor and collect even the tiny fragments of the meteorite, measuring as tiny as 0.004 inches. It is pertinent to note that the object named CNEOS 2014-01-08 paid a visit to Earth in 2014 and crashed into the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Papua New Guinea. What makes the meteorite special is that it is classed as an interstellar object, meaning it came from outside the solar system. According to them, the object was travelling at a speed of 60 kilometres per second which is much faster than an object that originates in the solar system. "At the Earth's distance from the sun, any object travelling faster than about 42 kilometres per second is on an unbounded, hyperbolic escape trajectory relative to the sun. So it [CNEOS 2014-01-08] must have originated from outside of the solar system" said Siraj. To this date, only three interstellar objects have been observed by humankind. Scientists have launched an undersea expedition to trace and collect the pieces of the first known&nbsp;interstellar object&nbsp;that hit Earth in 2014, reports Science Alert. The said object had crashed into the ocean just off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

The data at the time revealed that the object was a meteorite. Dubbed CNEOS 2014-01-08, the object is believed to have measured about a half-meter wide, and its potentially interstellar origins were first recognised by then graduate student Amir Siraj and Harvard professor Avi Loeb.

The data they collected at the time indicated that it could be an interstellar object—the first known to hit Earth and the third ever recorded. &nbsp;The other two interstellar objects recorded are Oumuamua and Borisov.

Siraj and Loeb had concluded that CNEOS 2014-01-08 might be from beyond our Solar System due to its unusually high heliocentric velocity, meaning it was moving at speeds that suggest it may not be bound within the Sun's gravity.

However, the problem in 2014 was that the data used to measure the object's impact which would confirm whether it is an interstellar object came from a US Department of Defense spy satellite. As a result, the details of the object were carefully guarded.

Therefore, a paper by Siraj and Loeb has remained unpublished and not peer-reviewed.

But this year in March, US Space Force's Space Operations Command's chief scientist Joel Mozer reviewed the classified data and confirmed that the “velocity estimate reported to NASA&nbsp;is sufficiently accurate to indicate an interstellar trajectory”.

US Space Force lieutenant general&nbsp;John Shaw signed the letter confirming the interstellar object.
