India's growing economic clout powers Dubai's FDI profile to top spot

Who says you cannot reach for the moon? Moon's replica is soon going to be built in Dubai. Canadian entrepreneur Michael Henderson has proposed to create a moon-like resort. A proposed $5 billion real estate project wants to take Dubai to new heights.

Dubai's upcoming 'big thing' could be a moon replica worth billions

To add new heights to the skyscraper-studded Dubai, Canadian entrepreneur Michael Henderson has proposed a $5 billion real estate project which aims at creating a moon-like resort.

Henderson has envisioned building the moon's 900-foot replica atop a 100-foot building present in Dubai, a city which already boasts of the world’s tallest building as well as other architectural wonders.

Henderson believes that his ambitious project, which has been named MOON and will be funded by Moon World Resorts Inc, is not that far-fetched.

“We have the biggest ‘brand’ in the world,” said Henderson, while speaking to The Associated Press, as he alluded that the moon itself was his brand. “Eight billion people know our brand, and we haven’t even started yet,” he added.

Henderson's project has proposed the inclusion of a destination resort inside the spherical structure, which will look like a moon.

The resort will have a 4,000-room hotel as well as an arena capable of hosting 10,000 people and a “lunar colony” where people would be provided with the experience of walking on the moon.

MOON will be placed on a pedestal-like circular building and will glow during nighttime. The project was discussed by Henderson at the Arabian Travel Market earlier in May in Dubai.

Artists illustrate MOON at various locations

Moon World Resorts have already commissioned artists who have illustrated the ambitious MOON at different locations, which include Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world at a height of 2,710 feet.

Some have even placed the resort at the Dubai Pearl, which is a long-dormant project and is now facing destruction near the man-made Palm Jumeirah archipelago and its unfinished sister, the Palm Jebel Ali.

The Pearl and the Palm Jebel Ali are the two “white elephant” projects which have been left unfinished since the 2009 financial crisis that rocked the country and forced United Arab Emirates' Abu Dhabi to bail out Dubai with $20 billion.

Now after 15 years, Dubai's fate has turned around. On average, rents across Dubai have increased by 26.9 per cent year-on-year, even after anti-price-gouging protections. Last year, Dubai saw 86,849 residential sales which crossed the previous year's record of 80,831 from 2009.

Novak Djokovic said he was now playing without pain after recovering from a hamstring injury as he prepares to return to the ATP Tour in Dubai this week following his record-extending 10th Australian Open title last month.

Djokovic suffered a three-centimetre hamstring tear en route to winning the Adelaide warm-up event before claiming his 22nd Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park to go level with Rafa Nadal. The 35-year-old Serb said his Dubai participation was in doubt until a few days ago but he had passed all his fitness tests.

"Had a couple of weeks of no tennis. The last few days it's really getting as much practice as possible to get myself back in shape to be able to compete at a high level," Djokovic said. "I haven't felt pain on the court for a week. I'm getting closer to 100%. Still not there in terms of the game and how I feel on court. But the important thing is there's no pain. I don't have a hindrance in the way I move on the court. "After every injury it takes time for mechanisms to be balanced, for adjustments to be done on court. It takes time to find that groove of moving effortlessly and not thinking about if something's going to happen. I don't have those thoughts."

Djokovic begins the Dubai tournament having entered his 378th week as world number one, surpassing Steffi Graf as the player with the most weeks at the top of the sport. "It's surreal to be that many weeks number one, to match Graf - one of the all-time greats," Djokovic said. "Just being amongst these legendary names is flattering. I'm proud of it."

It takes time to find that groove of moving effortlessly and not thinking about if something's going to happen. I don't have those thoughts." Djokovic begins the Dubai tournament having entered his 378th week as world number one, surpassing Steffi Graf as the player with the most weeks at the top of the sport. "It's surreal to be that many weeks number one, to match Graf - one of the all-time greats," Djokovic said. "Just being amongst these legendary names is flattering. I'm proud of it." Djokovic meets Czech Tomas Machac in the first round on Tuesday.

World number one Novak Djokovic 'pain-free' as he prepares for return in Dubai

Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza ended her glorious career with a first-round defeat in the Dubai Tennis Championship on Tuesday (February 21). Sania teamed up with Madison Keys but lost to the Russian pair of Vernokia Kudermetova and Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets, 4-6, 0-6, to bow out of competitive tennis with as many as six Grand Slam titles, including three women's doubles (with Swiss legend Martina Hingis).

During the course of her career, Sania inspired a bunch of female athletes and earned several accolades for the country. Two of her three mixed doubles came with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi (2009 Australian Open and 2012 French Open) whereas she claimed the US Open title with Bruno Soares in 2014.

Talking about her last outing, Sania-Keys started off on a promising note as the scoreline was 4-4 in the opening set before the Russian duo marched past them to take the early honours (6-4). From thereon, it was one-way traffic as Sania-Keys fell flat in the second set to lose without posing much threat.

International Cricket Council (ICC) has become the latest victim of online fraud. The global cricket body has been duped of over $2.5 million after fraudsters used deception and forgery to trick the ICC officials at its Dubai headquartered office. According to a Cricbuzz report, the ICC became a victim of a phishing attack wherein the scammer created a fake email id, pretending to be an ICC consultant.

A voucher was then sent to the finance department of ICC. The requisite money, $500,000 in one instance was cleared and sent into the scammers' account. Such was the sophistication of the entire process that ICC fell prey to the scam multiple times.

According to reports, ICC's Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and the entire finance department in Dubai is under heavy scrutiny. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) may be involved in the case as the phishing source is based in the US.

Incidentally, the money ICC lost in the incident could have been used to fund multiple associate nations for an entire year. On average, an ODI associate nation ranked 13-20 gets $500,000 to $1 million in funding from the ICC. ICC falling prey to such a scam is unheard of. Multiple checks and balances are in place when any amount is transferred to a third party. Shah Rukh Khan reaches Dubai to witness Burj Khalifa lit up with 'Pathaan' trailer

Dubai, UK, Switzerland and other exotic locations where celebs welcomed 2023

The Dubai administration made an announcement on New Year's Day to end fees for liquor licenses and removed a 30 per cent tax on alcohol sales to boost tourism. With this, the administration effectively ended a long-standing source of revenue for its ruling family in order to bolster tourism to the emirate.

The New Year's Day announcement, made by Dubai's two state-linked alcohol retailers, came apparently from a government decree from its ruling Al Maktoum family. However, it comes after years of loosening liquor regulations in the sheikhdom, which now sells alcohol during daylight hours during Ramadan and began providing home delivery during the coronavirus pandemic's lockdowns. Alcohol sales have been a major indicator of Dubai's economy for a long time. During the recent World Cup in nearby Qatar, commuting football fans frequented Dubai's numerous bars.

The announcement was made in a statement by Maritime and Mercantile International, a subsidiary of the Emirates Group." Since we began our operations in Dubai over 100 years ago, the emirate's approach has remained dynamic, sensitive and inclusive for all", said Tyrone Reid of MMI.

"These recently updated regulations are instrumental to continue ensuring the safe and responsible purchase and consumption of alcoholic beverages in Dubai and the UAE". An ad was also put up by MMI urging customers to buy from its stores, saying “you no longer need to drive out to the other emirates."

Residents of Dubai have long driven to Umm al-Quwain and other emirates to buy bulk and tax-free alcohol. Non-Muslims must be 21 years of age or older to consume alcohol in Dubai. Drinkers must carry plastic cards issued by Dubai police that allow them to buy, transport, and consume beer, wine, and liquor. In the absence of these, they risk fines and arrest, despite the fact that the sheikhdom's vast network of bars, nightclubs, and lounges almost never ask for a permit.

Nonetheless, relatively liberal Dubai is an outlier in the region. Sharjah, an emirate bordering Dubai to the north, prohibits the consumption of alcoholic beverages, as do neighbouring Iran, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.
