Republican leader Jeff Landry, who is backed by Donald Trump, won the governorship for Louisiana, overthrowing the incumbent Democrat John Bel Edwards.

The Associated Press news agency called the race which saw Landry, the state attorney general, getting 52 per cent of the vote when 95 per cent of the total votes was counted.

This is the first time in eight years that Louisiana went Red after Edwards was unable to seek another run at the office due to consecutive term limits. Edwards is the only Democratic governor in the Deep South.

The 52-year-old’s campaign was filled with conservative policy positions, including calling for a ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender youths, the state's near-total abortion ban that doesn't have exceptions for cases of rape and incest, and a law restricting youths' access to "sexually explicit material" in libraries, which has raised concerns over the possibility of cracking down on LGBTQ+ books.

But apart from these, Landry’s top priorities as governor would be addressing crime in urban areas, as discussed repeatedly during his campaign.

<h2>Campaign rooted in local issues</h2>

The Republican has pushed tough-on-crime rhetoric, calling for more "transparency" in the justice system and continuing to support capital punishment. Louisiana has the nation's second-highest murder rate per capita.

Landry’s campaign was mainly focused on LGBTQ rights, state finances and the death penalty.

However, on occasions, the Republican also repeatedly raked in national issues such as President Joe Biden's policies that limit oil and gas production and COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

During his address, Trump also repeatedly called Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based terrorist organisation, “very smart.”

The ADL's Jonathan Greenblatt told&nbsp;MSNBC that Trump appeared to have been fed the line by someone familiar with Hitler's infamous complaint of Jews "causing a blood poisoning of Germany."&nbsp;

Back in April 2021, Pratt looking to strike up a conversation with Trump reportedly brought up the American submarine fleet. The two, as per an ABC News report, previously had a conversation on the same topic.

Hearing this, "leaning," towards the Australian billionaire, an excited Trump revealed "the supposed exact number of nuclear warheads [US submarines] routinely carry, and exactly how close they supposedly can get to a Russian submarine without being detected."

Pratt would go on to discuss this with at least 45 others,&nbsp;including 11 of his company's employees, 10 Australian officials, six journalists, and three former Australian prime ministers, reports ABC News, citing sources.

Quoting sources, the Times reports that Trump's disclosures "potentially endangered the US nuclear fleet."

As per reports, federal prosecutors, already looking into Trump over the classified material found at Mar-a-Lago after he left office, have interviewed Pratt twice about the incident.

Former United States president Donald Trump on Friday (Oct 6) endorsed hard-right Republican, Ohio congressman Jim Jordan, for the job of speaker of the House of Representatives succeeding Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted by his own party in an unprecedented vote.&nbsp;

Taking to his Truth Social social media platform, Trump wrote: "Congressman Jim Jordan has been a STAR long before making his very successful journey to Washington, DC, representing Ohio's 4th Congressional District."&nbsp;

The former president added, "he (Jim Jordan) will be a GREAT Speaker of the House &amp; has my Complete &amp; Total Endorsement!"&nbsp;

Just a few hours before the post, Trump had offered to temporarily take up the role, which was left vacant this week after McCarthy was axed in a historic rebellion by far-right members of his own party.&nbsp;

"If they don't get the vote, they have asked me if I would consider taking the speakership until they get somebody longer-term, because I am running for president," he said.&nbsp;

On Thursday, US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in a notice in the US Federal Register said that there was "an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries."&nbsp;

The new section of the Mexico wall, as per AFP, will be built in the Rio Grande Valley Sector of the US-Mexico border, which is a "high illegal entry" area, said Mayorkas. The Rio Grande Valley Sector, as per the US Homeland Security Secretary, has been the location of more than 245,000 illegal entrants this fiscal year.

<h2>Biden's stand on the wall</h2>

The day he took office in January 2021, Biden announced, "no more American taxpayer dollars be diverted to construct a border wall".

He also said there would be a review of all the resources that had already been committed.

He had proclaimed: "Building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution."

After 'quietly' announcing the plans for the new addition to the pre-existing wall,&nbsp;Mayorkas said there was "no new Administration policy with respect to border walls. From day one, this Administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer."

He added that the "additional physical barriers" will be funded for using an appropriation made by Congress for the purpose of this wall back in 2019 when Trump was still in office.

"We have repeatedly asked Congress to rescind this money, but it has not done so, and we are compelled to follow the law," he said.

For the move to go through and the border wall to be extended, some two dozen federal laws such as the Clean Air Act and Endangered Species Act would need to be waived.

Back in May of this year, when the Title 42 law expired, the Biden administration also introduced tough new rule that requires migrants to make an appointment on a government-run smartphone app before approaching a legal port of entry.

Those going against the rule face a tougher bar for asylum if they cross the border illegally.

<h2>Trump claims victory</h2>

The Mexico border wall was former president Trump's signature policy. His first political campaign for president was known for its rally chant, "Build That Wall."

On Thursday, after the Biden administration's plans were announced, Trump was quick to claim victory and demand an apology.

Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, he said: "As I have stated often, over thousands of years, there are only two things that have consistently worked, wheels and walls!"&nbsp;

He also said that the Biden administration showed "I was right when I built 560 miles... of brand new, beautiful border wall."

"Will Joe Biden apologise to me and America for taking so long to get moving, and allowing our country to be flooded with 15 million illegals immigrants, from places unknown," he asked.

<h2>Illegal migrants: A burning issue in US</h2>

Illegal immigration has become a major political issue for Biden. Opposition Republicans have repeatedly accused the president of lax border policies.

Republican governors of states near the border say Biden is not doing enough to stop the crossings, and have even transported some arriving migrants to Democrat-controlled cities such as New York and Chicago.

This has now led to some Democratic leaders voicing criticism against Biden.

On Thursday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams began a trip to Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador, where he will tell would-be migrants that his city cannot accommodate them and that local shelter systems are overwhelmed, reported Reuters.

As per the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute, around 11 million immigrants have entered the US without legal documentation.

These include hundreds and thousands of Venezuelans fleeing economic and political turmoil at home.

To enter the US, they trek through a treacherous jungle region between Colombia and Panama known as the Darien Gap.

This high number of migrants has strained US cities at the border and further north, reports Reuters.

As per the US Department of Justice, there are around two million claims by illegal immigrants looking to extend their stay in the US pending in the immigration court.

Former US president Donald Trump has dropped out of the Forbes 400 list of wealthy American individuals after his net worth dwindled by more than $600 million.

Trump’s net worth now stands at $2.6 billion, according to the magazine, which had valued the real estate tycoon at $3.2 billion in the 2022 list.

The richest person continues to be Tesla CEO Elon Musk, with a net worth of $251 billion,&nbsp;according&nbsp;to the ranking.

The exclusion comes in the wake of Trump facing a civil fraud trial in New York where he is accused of vastly overrepresenting his wealth and the values of many of his properties.

Forbes said that Trump, “who has been obsessed with getting featured on the list for decades”, had been relentlessly “lying to reporters to try to vault himself higher on the list”.

<h2>Truth Social</h2>

The biggest reason for Trump’s exit from the list has been attributed to his Truth Social, the social media platform launched after he was banned from Twitter (before it was rechristened to X) in the wake of the Capitol riots.

So far, Trump’s social media platform has been able to attract only 6.5 million users, about 1 per cent of X.

The former president’s 90 per cent stake in Truth Social’s parent company has plummeted in value from an estimated $730 million to less than $100 million, Forbes noted.

"If Trump's platform were thriving, he would probably have no trouble finding alternate financing. But it's not, and there is little reason to be optimistic about Truth Social's future," Forbes noted.

Forbes has also noted that apart from Truth Social, Trump’s office buildings have also declined in value by $170 million.

The case has been filed against Orbis Business Intelligence and its founder Christopher Steele, a former MI6 spy who had claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin “supported and directed” an operation to “cultivate” Trump as a presidential candidate for “at least five years”.&nbsp;

<h2>Hearing to begin on Oct 16</h2>

The hearing will begin on October 16 and will last for two days, the court order published on Thursday (Sept 28) stated, according to PA news agency.

No other details of the case have been made available except that Trump has brought a data protection claim against Steele, who was the head of the Secret Intelligence Service’s Russia desk.

It is understood that the Republican presidential contender&nbsp;would not attend the hearing.

Steele was the author of the so-called Steele dossier, which was leaked to BuzzFeed in 2017 alleging links between Trump and the Russian security service, the FSB.

The dossier claimed that Trump was compromised by the FSB, and also alleged that the Russians may have held compromising information over Trump in the form of videos showing him engaged in salacious activity in a Moscow hotel.

Trump has denied the claims.

<h2>Steele dossier&nbsp;</h2>

According to reports, Orbis Business Intelligence was hired by Washington DC strategic group Fusion GPS to gather information on Trump, which many believed was commissioned by Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

In 2019, Steele during his deposition said that his findings were for the benefit of private clients, not media organisations, according to CNN.

US President Joe Biden on Thursday (Sep 28) launched a personal attack on "extremist" Donald Trump, indicating that the Republican who could be his 2024 challenger, would challenge the country's constitution if he comes back to power next year.

Biden delivered the speech as impeachment inquiry hearings were launched by House Republicans into the 80-year-old president on the basis of unproven allegations that he lied about the business dealings of his son Hunter Biden. 
 
"We should all remember: democracies don't have to die at the end of a rifle. They can die when people are silent, when they fail to stand up, or condemn threats to democracy,” Biden stated.
