Dinesh Karthik played a sensational knock of unbeaten 44 runs to help Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) by four wickets in a thrilling encounter in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Tuesday. Karthik came out to bat at number seven when RCB were reeling at 87/5 in the 170-run chase and helped the team get over the line with a brilliant display.

RCB got off to a good start in the run chase with openers Faf du Plessis and Anuj Rawat adding a 55-run stand for the first wicket. However, the duo departed in quick succession followed by the dismissals of Virat Kohli (5) and David Willey (5) cheaply which left RCB in a spot of bother.

The required run-rate had touched 12 runs per over mark when Karthik arrived in the middle. However, the veteran wicket-keeper batter went all out right from the start of his innings and took the RR bowlers to the cleaners. Karthik's 23-ball 44 was laced with seven fours and one six as he helped RCB get over the line with five balls to spare.

Post his side's win, Karthik sent a strong message to his critics and said he was not done yet. He had struggled in the IPL in his last couple of seasons with his former side Kolkata Knight Riders and Karthik wanted to make the most of it in this year's tournament.

“I think I made a conscious effort this year to do justice to myself because the last year, I felt I could have done better. The way I trained was much better this time around. Credit to the person who trained with me. I'm making a conscious effort to tell myself that I'm not done yet,” Karthik said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“When I went in, we needed 12 rpo and had to keep going. I train for these situations. To stay calm and know whom you can take down. I've tried to play as much white-ball cricket as possible, and prepare as many scenarios as possible. Lot of people have spent time with me in this journey, leading up to the tournament and it's the work that goes unnoticed mostly. I think T20 cricket, it's mostly premeditating but you also need to be clear about where to target,” he added.

RCB were struggling at one point in the run chase when half the team was back to the pavilion at 87/5 inside 13 overs. However, Karthik's cameo combined with Shahbaz Ahmed's 26-ball 45 helped RCB wrap up a comfortable win for his team at the end. IPL 2022: Dinesh Karthik, Shahbaz Ahmed propel RCB to stunning 4-wicket win over RR

Dinesh Karthik has been in splendid form with the bat for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) so far in the IPL 2022 edition. In RCB's season-opener, versus Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab Kings (PBKS), the veteran IPL keeper-batter returned with a blazing 14-ball 32 not out whereas finished a tight run-chase for the side in a low-scoring thriller versus Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) courtesy a vital 7-ball 14*.

While DK will want to continue in similar stead with the bat, he is also only two away from completing 150 dismissals by a wicketkeeper in the IPL. If DK gets to the feat in RCB's clash versus Rajasthan Royals (RR), on Tuesday evening (April 05), he will become only the second keeper to have 150, or more, dismissals up his sleeves, along with Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) MS Dhoni.

IPL 2022: Dinesh Karthik on cusp of joining MS Dhoni in an elite list during RCB-RR clash

Match 13 of the IPL 2022 edition will see the one-time winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) face the three-time runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday evening (April 5).

Both sides are coming into this game on the back of a win in their previous outing. While RCB beat the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a low-scoring thriller last week, RR emerged on top of the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) in a high-scoring encounter on April 2 (Saturday) to remain unbeaten after their opening two fixtures.

So far, RR have played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune and at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai. Thus, they will be tested at the Wankhede, where the pitch has tested the batters and has assisted the pacers in the powerplays. It will be interesting to see how they respond to the change in conditions at the iconic stadium.

Predicting RR's XI for RCB fixture

Given that RR have a settled line-up, with their batters expressing themselves and having a lot of variety in the bowling department, they might not be willing to make wholesome changes in the line-up. Nonetheless, they would be hoping for a turnaround from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hasn't performed so far in the two games (scoring 20 and 1). The other chink in RR's armour can be their sixth bowling option. They will hope for their main bowlers to strike at regular intervals as Riyan Parag is their only additional option if one from their bowling unit has an off-day

Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag, Ravichandran Ashwin, Navdeep Saini, Trent Boult, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna

IPL 2022: Will table-toppers go unchanged? Predicting Sanju Samson-led RR's likely playing XI vs RCB

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) went past Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a thrilling match 6 of the IPL 2022 edition on Wednesday evening (March 30), at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai. In reply, RCB lost big guns such as skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli early in the run-chase before Shahbaz's vital knock and DK-Harshal's boundaries took RCB to their maiden win of the season. After the game, Faf lavished huge praise on Karthik and compared his finishing skills to Chennai Super Kings (CSK)'s former skipper MS Dhoni.

The RCB skipper said at the post-match presentation, "The runs were never a problem. We just needed to have wickets in hand. DK is as close as it gets to MS Dhoni when it comes to being ice cool. I rely on other people for help. We have great people in the camp."

Du Plessis added, "Close small margins game are very important at the start. Small score, we just tried to be positive but very good bowling from their seamers. The ball swung a little more earlier but today there was seam and bounce. Two three days ago, it was 200 and today it was 130. We would like to be more convincing."

Dinesh Karthik is as close as it gets to MS Dhoni: Faf du Plessis lauds RCB's finisher after KKR win

Royal Challengers Bangalore batters overcame some nervy moments after leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga spun his way to a four-wicket haul to register a three-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in a low-scoring IPL match here on Wednesday.

Hasaranga lived up to his Rs 10.75 crore price tag as his four-wicket burst helped RCB dismiss KKR for 128.
The Sri Lankan was ably supported by the pace trio of Akash Deep (3/45), Harshal Patel (2/11) and Mohammed Siraj (1/25) after RCB won the toss and elected to bowl at DY Patil Stadium here.

In reply, Sherfane Rutherford (28), David Willey (18) and Shahbaz Ahmed (27) played crucial innings as RCB survived some anxious moments before overhauling the target, scoring 132 for 7 in 19.2 overs after Tim Southee (3/20) and Umesh Yadav (2/16) blew away their top-order.

Yadav and Southee troubled the top-order batters with their pace and bounce, leaving RCB at 17 for 3 at one stage.
While Anuj Rawat (0) got a thick outside edge off Umesh, Faf Du Plessis (5) got a leading edge to the point fielder and Virat Kohli (12) paid the price for playing away from the body.

Willey and Rutherford then tried to rebuild the chase with a 45-run stand but Sunil Narine broke the partnership in the 11th over as he had the former caught at midwicket. Coming to the crease, Shahbaz pulled Andre Russell for two maximums as RCB amassed 15 runs to ease the pressure.

Needing 36 off 30 balls, Shahbaz hit another six off Chakravarthy before being deceived by the bowler as RCB slumped to 101 for 5. With pressure mounting, Rutherford went for a slog only to be caught behind off Southee.
Needing 17 off the last two overs, Harshal Patel smashed two fours, while Dinesh Karthik (14 not out) blasted a six and a four in the first two balls of the last over to take the team home.

Earlier, KKR batters struggled with the extra bounce and went for shots too many despite losing wickets at regular intervals. None of the batters could capitalise on the starts as KKR lost six wickets for 57 runs to slip from 44 for 3 to 101 for 9 in 14.3 overs.

Big-hitting West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell was the highest scorer for KKR with an 18-ball 25, while Umesh Yadav (18) and Varun Chakravarthy (10) added 27 runs, the fourth-highest for the 10th wicket in IPL history, to provide some respectability to the total.

Venkatesh Iyer was the first to be dismissed with Akash Deep striking on his first delivery, while Ajinkya Rahane's shaky start ended when he was holed out in the fifth over off Siraj as KKR slipped to 32 for 2.

Nitish Rana too perished quickly with David Willey producing a stunning catch as KKR slipped to 44 for 3 in the first six overs. Skipper Shreyas Iyer then paid the price for an irresponsible shot, hitting straight to Du Plessis at long-on for Hasaranga's first wicket.

Despite the match situation, West Indies all-rounder Sunil Narine went for his shots, sending Akash Deep across mid-off before top-edging him for a maximum. However, Hasaranga came back to strike twice in two balls as KKR slumped to 67 for 6 in 9 overs.

While Narine ended up giving an easy catch to point fielder, Sheldon Jackson was cleaned up with a ripping googly.
Sam Billing, who survived an LBW appeal in his first ball, slammed a six before making his way back to the hut with a miscued pull which was comfortably held by Kohli at long-on.

Russell then smashed three sixes and a four before edging Patel to Karthik, while Tim Southee mistimed one to Du Plessis to become Hasaranga's fourth victim.

RCB skipper Faf du Plessis scripts IPL history with brilliant knock against Punjab Kings

The excitement for IPL 2022 is on another level as the upcoming season's commencement is just a few days away. This year's edition is keenly awaited as the ardent IPL fans want to see how the two new teams perform and what they bring to the table whereas many are making predictions on which youngster will make a mark, which side will have the last laugh, etc.

Amid all this, Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik joined the bandwagon and made a bold claim regarding which player he feels will be the 'one to watch out for' in IPL 2022, set to get underway on March 26 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

"Definitely David Warner (when being asked about the player to watch out for). And I say that because he's someone who has shown greatness in IPL over a period of time, [he has won] three Orange Caps. Obviously, last year didn't go according to plan but I am sure he'll have a point to prove. He's gone back to a franchise that he's played for before. Interestingly, I've played with him in that franchise, terrific cricketer, and I am pretty sure he'll have a very, very good season," Karthik said in a chat with Cricbuzz.

Many other marquee cricketers such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Quinton de Kock, Jonny Bairstow, etc. will also like to make a mark in the forthcoming season.

On the other hand, DK also predicted who will be the most valuable overseas player in IPL 2022. In this regard, he picked New Zealand's Devon Conway, his RCB captain Faf du Plessis' replacement in the CSK camp, to do wonders for the MS Dhoni-led Yellow Army.

"Devon Conway (overseas MVP). He's a new import, he's going to make his debut for CSK. Terrific player. He's had a brilliant couple of seasons for New Zealand, did very well even in the World Cup under pressure even though he batted in the middle-order which is not something he does [often]. I have a feeling he's a very strong player and will go very very well for CSK," opined Karthik.

Not Virat Kohli or KL Rahul! RCB's Dinesh Karthik picks 'player to watch out for' in IPL 2022

The ardent fans of Virat Kohli have been patiently waiting for the superstar cricketer's 71st international ton. Kohli's last three-figure knock at the international level came in late 2019. Since then, he gave up Test and T20I captaincy whereas he was sacked as the ODI skipper for Rohit Sharma to take charge of Team India as full-time captain.

In the IPL, Kohli's last century came during the 2019 edition. While he has been among runs in the last two seasons, his strike-rate has gone down. In IPL 2021, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter amassed 405 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 119.46. In the previous season, he struck at 121.35. After giving up on RCB captaincy with the end of the last year's edition, his Bengaluru teammate and Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell feels Kohli will be at his usual best in the forthcoming IPL 2022 edition with no additional pressure on him.

Speaking on the RCB Podcast, Maxwell said, "He knows he's handing the captaincy over, which I think is potentially a big burden for him. It might have been something that's been weighing him down for a while and now that he's been able to release it, it might be dangerous news for opposition teams."

"It is amazing for him to be relaxed a bit and actually enjoy the next few years of his career without any of that sort of external pressure. I think playing against him in earlier days, he was a fiery competitor, getting in your face. He's always trying to impose himself on the game. Impose himself on the opposition," he further opined.

India wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant shattered the legendary Kapil Dev's 40-year-old record on Sunday (March 13) as he smashed the fastest fifty by an Indian in Test cricket. Pant notched up his half-century off just 28 balls in the ongoing pink-ball Test against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Pant went after the Sri Lankan bowling attack and took them to the cleaners as he slammed seven fours and two sixes in his enthralling knock to help India extend their lead. With the help of the half-century from the wicket-keeper batter and Shreyas Iyer, India managed to pst 303/9 (declared) on the board in their second innings to hand Sri Lanka a huge target of 447 runs.

Pant earned praise from all corners after his destructive knock against Sri Lanka and was also lauded by veteran India wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik. Karthik said the left-hander was already on his way towards attaining greatness and stated that he might finish as one of India's greatest wicket-keepers along with the legendary MS Dhoni.

Former India captain MS Dhoni is regarded as one of the best wicket-keeper batsmen in the history of the game. He also holds the record for most dismissals and most runs by an Indian wicket-keeper in Test cricket.

"You have to say that Rishabh Pant is on his way to greatness. I think if he has a full-fledged wicketkeeping career for India, he will end up being one of the greats along with MS Dhoni. These two will stand out as India's greatest wicketkeepers who have played the game," Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

Karthik further added that Pant also reminded him of someone like Virender Sehwag, who was known for his ability to take down bowling attacks single-handedly across all formats of the game. Karthik said Pant's natural game is about taking risks and he has been extremely good with it so far.

"Rishabh Pant has the game to take risks and consistently be good at it. Also, he reminds me of Virender Sehwag, in the sense that when the field is up, he has the ability to hit boundaries at ease right from the get-go and that makes him a very special Test player. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Saturday (March 13) confirmed the appointment of Faf du Plessis as their new captain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Du Plessis will replace Virat Kohli, who had stepped down from captaincy following the conclusion of IPL 2021 last year. While there were speculations Kohli could return to captaincy or Glenn Maxwell can take charge, RCB's announcement put to rest all such rumours.

Du Plessis was signed by RCB for a sum of Rs 7 crore (INR 70 million) at the IPL 2022 mega auction last month and ever since then, he had become one of the frontrunners to become the new RCB skipper. However, the likes of Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik, who have led IPL teams in the past, were also in contention to replace Kohli as the new captain.

RCB's Director of Cricket Mike Hesson explained why the franchise decided to go with Du Plessis as captain over the likes of Maxwell and Karthik. When asked if the franchise had bid for Du Plessis at the mega auction keeping the captaincy decision in mind, Hesson admitted the franchise saw the former South Africa skipper as part of their leadership group.

"It was a little bit of both. We obviously had Maxwell and Virat to have huge captaincy experience that we retained. We felt within our leadership group we wanted to expand on that and also Harshal Patel as well. Who we wanted to buy back. So it was more about growing our leadership group and carrying on from that," said Hesson.

"Obviously, Faf was right up the top of that list in terms of whom we were wanting to get. It was little bit of both. I know how well respected he is. I know tactically sound he is. We have the likes of Virat, Maxi (Maxwell), DK who is new to the group," he added.

With many of the opinion that having an overseas captain might act as a limitation going forward as only four overseas players are allowed in the playing XI, Hesson said he had no doubts that Du Plessis will play all games for the franchise. Hesson also called Du Plessis the most suitable candidate for the captaincy role.

"When you look to decide who's the most suitable candidate for the role, you don't necessarily decide whether they're an Indian player or an overseas player. Sure the seven Indians and there's four overseas -- we know the maths," said Hesson.

"The reality is that Faf is good enough to play every single game anyway. So that's not a question. Therefore you just look at who's the guy you gonna work with the leaders in the group and get the best out of the younger guys, build relationships and help develop that RCB culture that we want. We just want the best candidate for the job. And there's no doubt in our mind that Faf is the guy for that," he added.

RCB, who are yet to win their maiden IPL title, will hope for a change in fortunes this season after appointing Du Plessis as the new leader of the side.

Rohit Sharma-led Team India produced an emphatic and flawless performance in the first Test versus Sri Lanka in Mohali. Right from the word go, everything clicked for Rohit & Co. as they emerged on top courtesy a massive win, by an innings and 222 runs.

Opting to bat first, India posted 574-8 decl. and dismissed the Dimuth Karunaratne-led Sri Lankans for a paltry 174 and 178 with R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami chipping in with majority of wickets. While Jadeja returned with 175 not out and a nine-wicket haul in the match, Rishabh Pant also continued to grow in stature in whites with an attacking 96 and three vital dismissals behind the stumps. Whenever an offspinner bowls into the rough a little bit and the ball is turning in, it is a hard one to take because you never know which one is going to straighten and which one will turn. On top of that if it deviates off the bat it becomes that much harder and that is where I like Pant. His hands were at the right place,” he said. Virat Kohli had dropped a bomb by announcing that he will step aside as the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain when the second and final leg of IPL 2021 kicked off last year, in the UAE. After RCB lost the Eliminator to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Kohli's captaincy tenure for the three-time runners-up finally came to an end.

Kohli captained the side from 2011 -2021 (becoming the full-time skipper since 2013) but couldn't lead them to the coveted title. Under his leadership, the Bengaluru-based franchise won 64 games in 140 matches, losing as many as 69 fixtures. Their best season under Kohli came in 2016 when they lost the season-finale to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Ahead of the IPL 2022 edition, RCB remain the only team who have not announced their captain yet. After the mega auction, they added some new faces to the squad and have some captaincy contenders in the form of Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis, Dinesh Karthik whereas some feel Kohli might also return to the top job if he wishes to.

Nonetheless, former RCB skipper -- and Kohli's predecessor -- Daniel Vettori doesn't feel the star player will take up the captaincy post once again. "No [Virat Kohli will not be the RCB captain again]. I think it is as simple as that. I don't think that ever works, let alone in franchise cricket or international cricket. Once the captain is moved on, the right thing is for him to move on," Vettori told ESPNCricinfo.

Vettori further revealed his choice and said, "I think they will look at Kohli, Maxwell and Du Plessis as the leadership group and even Dinesh Karthik. I think Faf will step in for Maxwell. But if they win the first three games, maybe they will continue on with him. I think Maxwell is a shorter long-term. Three years is a long-term time in the IPL. They will look at Maxwell as the three-year cycle and hopefully he continues to play as he did in the last IPL. They will factor that in that he will be the leader for three years."

Daniel Vettori gives his verdict on whether Virat Kohli will return to RCB captaincy in IPL 2022

India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik praised Rohit Sharma and said that a cricketing country like India needs one captain.

Rohit Sharma was recently appointed India's all-format captain after Virat Kohli decided to step down from his leadership role of the Test side.

Rohit's first assignment in the longest format as the skipper will come against Sri Lanka, in a two-match Test series, starting March 4.

"A cricketing country like India needs one captain," Karthik said.

"It is very easy to deal with one captain for all three formats. I remember MS Dhoni saying that split captaincy doesn't work in India that well. We haven't had that over a period of time, so we wouldn't know. But at this point in time when I do see it, I think he (Rohit) is the man. Every time he touched something, it's turned to gold. All the series he has been a part of, he has won convincingly," said Dinesh Karthik on ICC show, The ICC Review.

Karthik also praised the way Rohit has used India's bowlers and his handling of young players.

India have recently completed 3-0 series sweeps in T20Is against New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka.

"He has shown a lot of tactical nous in the games that he has played. Moved the bowlers around really well, giving confidence to the batters and when they've won a series, giving opportunities to the young guys. Sometimes taking a backseat, batting in a position where obviously he has not batted there for a long time. So, he is doing a lot of things right."

Under Rohit's leadership, India has also integrated a few young players in the limited-overs formats. The likes of Deepak Hooda, Avesh Khan, Venkatesh Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi have all recently made their debuts for India.

"The good thing is, there have been 2-3 debutants in his captaincy and all have done well. And that doesn't happen always. It's great to see that happening and he is somebody who is a people's person. He understands failures well. So it is very nice that he is taking the team forward."

Karthik has played alongside Rohit for a long time in internationals, as well as franchise cricket, and revealed that foresight and clarity were the two qualities that stood out about his leadership.

Revealing anecdotes about his leadership, Karthik said: "Just as an example, the way he chooses to take DRS. The way he speaks to people and then he makes the decisions. It's very interesting the way he has always thought."

He has foresight, clarity of thought: Dinesh Karthik on Rohit Sharma ahead of Hitman's Test captaincy debut

Veteran India wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik has shared his two cents on Wriddhiman Saha's axing from India's Test squad. Saha was dropped from India's squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka at home along with other senior players like Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma.

Saha later went on to reveal that he was told by head coach Rahul Dravid and chief selector Chetan Sharma that he is not in the Indian team's plans anymore as far as the longest format is concerned. Saha was asked to move on as the Indian team management wants to groom young wicket-keeper batter KS Bharat, who has replaced Saha in the squad.

Karthik sympathised with Saha after he was dropped and said it is a hard pill to swallow for any cricketer to be told that he is no more in the team's plans moving forward. Saha, who played majorly as a back-up keeper at the time of MS Dhoni, was once called the best wicket-keeper in the world by former India skipper Virat Kohli.

However, with Rishabh Pant's remarkable rise, Saha failed to cement his spot in the Test team even after Dhoni's retirement but managed to play 40 Tests for the Indian side.

"I'm pretty sure from wherever I've seen with Wriddhiman's interviews, he understands where this decision is coming from. I know no cricketer is going to accept that when you're being told to move on. It is a very hard one because this is what they've been doing day in and day out," Karthik told ICC.

"All of us want to represent the country and that is the burning desire for everybody. So when somebody comes in says, 'I think your time is done,' it can be a hard one to swallow. But it is understandable and you have to understand where the selectors, the coach and the captain are coming from," he added.

Karthik lauded Saha for being a great servant for Indian cricket and praised him for doing well while going about his business silently. In 40 Tests, Saha amassed 1353 runs, took 92 catches and effected 12 stumpings for India.

"Kudos to Wriddhiman Saha. I think he has been one of those brilliant, quiet servants of Indian cricket who has done so well over a period of years," said Karthik.

'It can be a hard one to swallow': Dinesh Karthik on Wriddhiman Saha getting dropped from India's Test squad

Ahead of India's upcoming three-match T20I series versus Sri Lanka, at home, veteran keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has lavished huge praise on the new pair of Rahul Dravid-Rohit Sharma as he feels they are taking Indian cricket in a fabulous direction.

After India's exit in the 2021 T20 World Cup, a lot has changed in Indian cricket. Initially, Rohit Sharma was named the T20I captain (with Virat Kohli stepping down from the post) and Rahul Dravid succeeded Ravi Shastri to become the head coach. Rohit then replaced Kohli as the ODI captain, after the latter's sacking, and has now taken over as the full-time captain after being appointed as the Test skipper as well.

Under Rohit-Dravid, India have not yet conceded a single game (winning six T20Is and three ODIs) as Karthik feels the duo have 'plugged small holes' that were previously present in the Indian team.

"What I enjoyed most was Rohit's captaincy," Karthik said in an interaction with the ICC. "I thought he led the team beautifully. Tactically very, very sound, and I thoroughly enjoyed the way the team played in the last couple of series against West Indies."

Karthik also stated that the duo of Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid have “plugged small holes” that were previously there in the Indian team.

"The new captain and there's a new coach, I think they are taking the team in a fabulous direction. They've plugged small holes, which were probably there previously, and that has been the beautiful part about it. And along the way, in the journey, they've managed to become No.1,” said Karthik.

They're taking Team India in a fabulous direction: Dinesh Karthik lauds Rahul Dravid-Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma's Team India beat West Indies in the third and final T20I at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Sunday evening (February 20). Being asked to bat first, Rohit & Co. rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 65 and Venkatesh Iyer's 19-ball 35* to post 184-5. In reply, the Kieron Pollard-led visitors were restricted 167-9 to whitewash the series courtesy a 17-run win.

Throughout the course of the series, the 34-year-old Rohit made heads turn for his decision-making, rotating the bowlers and being a step ahead of the opposition on the field. Thus, veteran keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik lauded Hitman but also mentioned where he will be tested as captain. For the unversed, Rohit is now India's full-time captain after being named as Virat Kohli's successor in whites, after taking over in limited-overs, on Saturday (February 19).

Going to be a big challenge: Dinesh Karthik points out where captain Rohit Sharma will be tested

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has picked the next captain for the Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the IPL 2022 edition. After the two-day mega auction was held in Bengaluru, RCB have picked a strong squad and have quite a few captaincy options to choose from.

The Bengaluru-based franchise have Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis (roped in for INR 70 million) and Dinesh Karthik, who has also led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) before, as the possible candidates who can succeed Kohli as the RCB skipper for IPL 2022. Amongst them, Gavaskar has named Maxwell as the ideal candidate.

For the unversed, Maxwell was part of RCB's IPL 2021 run, amassing 513 runs at 42.75 along with 6 half-centuries. He was RCB's highest run-getter in last year's edition. Thus, the Aussie all-rounder was one of the three retentions from the franchise, at INR 110 million.

Gavaskar told Sports Tak, "I think if Glenn Maxwell is given the responsibility then a different kind of Maxwell will be seen in IPL. Last year he batted brilliantly probably keeping the mega auction in mind, but he was retained after that, which was good, I guess, for him.”

"We have often seen that players who bat well but score 30-40 runs quickly and get out without getting the job done- especially when suppose the team requires 70 or 80 runs more. But when these same players are given a responsibility then they played well showing better shot selection. So if Maxwell is given the captaincy, he will score more and play better," he said.

From Ishan Kishan to Yuvraj Singh: Top five most expensive Indian buys in IPL auction

Rohit Sharma-led Team India dropped Ishan Kishan for the second and penultimate ODI versus West Indies, at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Wednesday (February 8). Ishan, who played the series opener and made 28, made way for KL Rahul as the vice-captain returned to the squad after missing the first ODI.

With Ishan missing out, India promoted Rishabh Pant up the order -- in a bid to maintain the left-right-hand combination and also retain Rahul at No. 5. With Pant opening the innings along with skipper Rohit, veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has heaped praise on Ishan. Despite the competition being intense for the opening slot, with another contender in Pant coming into the scheme of things, Karthik feels Ishan can still make a mark due to his 'tremendous skills'.

"Ishan by now would know that among all the available spots, the one that has the most competition is the opening. There are way too many openers and just two spots. He's going to be aware of that... but the good thing for Ishan is that he's not just a keeper. He's a good fielder as well. You double up as an option on the field. They are going to look at him as a pure opener like they did in the first game against West Indies," said Karthik in the pre-match show on Cricbuzz.

"He's got tremendous skills... he can attack from ball one. That's a skill every player doesn't possess. In the new age, players try and attack a lot from ball one. Teams that have succeeded in doing that consistently have done very well in multi-nation tournaments. So Ishan definitely has a good chance to come into the scheme of things," he further said.

India also went ahead with Pant as Shikhar Dhawan remains unavailable for selection despite recovering from Covid-19 virus. It is expected that Dhawan will return to the line-up in the series decider, on February 11, and also reclaim his opening slot along with Rohit.

India vs WI, 2nd ODI: Dinesh Karthik lauds Indian star, says 'he has got tremendous skills'

Dinesh Karthik's international career has been a topsy-turvy ride. While he has never been a regular in Team India setup for a long period, Karthik has always found ways to keep reinventing himself and stage a comeback in the national setup at regular intervals.

With the 2022 Men's T20 World Cup to be held later this year, the 36-year-old Karthik will be eager to make a strong claim for a return to the T20I side with consistent performances in the forthcoming IPL 2022 edition, to be held in India. Karthik is set to be under the hammer in the upcoming IPL 2022 mega auction, to be held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru, after the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) didn't retain him last year.

Karthik, with 4,046 runs in 213 matches and 147 dismissals behind the stumps (second-most overall) in IPL, will once again be in demand among the franchises in the auction proceedings. Ahead of the auction, he revealed which franchise will he feel great to be a part of.

But at the end of the day, what's important for me is whichever team that I get to play in, it will be an absolute honour because as I said, all this practice that I've been doing these days is to try and do well in a tournament like the IPL," the Tamil Nadu wicket-keeper further added.

IPL 2022 mega auction: Not RCB, MI! Dinesh Karthik reveals which franchise he will feel 'great to play for'

A lot of changes have taken place in Indian cricket following their disastrous run in the 2021 T20 Men's World Cup, held in the UAE. Following the Virat Kohli-led Men in Blue's dismal campaign in the mega event, Kohli stepped down as the T20I captain; he had already announced his resignation from the post prior to the tournament.

After the tournament, BCCI selectors sacked Kohli as the ODI captain, making Rohit Sharma the white-ball format's skipper. Early in 2022, Kohli stepped down as the Test skipper, ending his captaincy tenure for Team India overall. While many have shared their thoughts on Kohli's captaincy saga, especially after speculations of his rift with the senior board officials spread like wildfire, veteran keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has also reacted to the Kohli-captaincy saga.

Karthik mentioned MS Dhoni's words and told news agency ANI, "I remember MS Dhoni saying very clearly that India as a cricketing nation is very hard to have split captaincy. It is unfair for me to answer this question because only Virat knows why he took that decision to step down as captain, and I am sure he has a good reason behind it."

He further added, "He has led India so well and taken the Test team to a very strong place. As a person who has been part of the team and has played under him, I know the amount of effort he puts in every time he goes out on the field. He gives it everything he has. It has been a great joy for me to have been part of that journey. He has been one of the top captains for India in Tests. I hope when he turns back, he looks at all the pleasant memories and the good memories and he has a good time thinking about the success he has had as the captain."

Kohli will now be eager to move past his captaincy tenure and deliver his best with the bat in India's upcoming home season, versus West Indies and Sri Lanka. Rohit-led India are gearing up for the three-match ODI series versus Kieron Pollard-led Windies, starting on February 6.

Following the Virat Kohli-led Men in Blue's dismal campaign in the mega event, Kohli stepped down as the T20I captain; he had already announced his resignation from the post prior to the tournament.

It is unfair for me to answer this question because only Virat knows why he took that decision to step down as captain, and I am sure he has a good reason behind it." He further added, "He has led India so well and taken the Test team to a very strong place. As a person who has been part of the team and has played under him, I know the amount of effort he puts in every time he goes out on the field. He gives it everything he has. It has been a great joy for me to have been part of that journey. He has been one of the top captains for India in Tests. I hope when he turns back, he looks at all the pleasant memories and the good memories and he has a good time thinking about the success he has had as the captain." 'Remember MS Dhoni saying very clearly...' Dinesh Karthik reacts to Virat Kohli's captaincy saga

Team India returned from a disastrous tour of South Africa, losing the three Tests 2-1 and being whitewashed in the preceding three ODIs. In limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma's absence, KL Rahul led the side in the 50-over series where the national side produced a listless performance.

India's bowlers failed to get regular breakthroughs throughout the course of the series whereas the middle and lower-order batting remains a cause of concern. After the three ODIs, it is widely believed that India need an urgent transformation in the white-ball formats. The Men in Blue need to rejig their batting line-up, play more fearlessly and include more specialists in the two shorter formats.

In this regard, veteran keeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has opined that star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja can solve India's middle and lower-order struggles. Karthik suggested for Jadeja to bat at No. 6 going ahead.

At present, Jadeja is out of contention for a spot across formats due to knee injury. On Wednesday (January 26), the BCCI selectors named a strong ODI and T20I squad for Rohit-led India's West Indies series, at home. Jadeja missed out as he is still not fully fit from his knee injury. The star player remains an indispensable part of the Indian team across formats.

The IPL 2022 edition is still two months away. The BCCI is planning to host the 15th edition in India, from late March. Before the upcoming season begins, all eyes are on the mega auction. It is set to be held in Bengaluru in mid-February. Before the auction proceedings, seven out of the ten teams don't have to worry about choosing a captain as they have either retained their respective skippers or named new captains.

However, the likes of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) need to choose a captain as well in the forthcoming mega auction. While Virat Kohli resigned as the RCB captain post IPL 2021, KL Rahul left PBKS and will captain the Lucknow Super Giants in the forthcoming edition. Despite taking KKR to the IPL 14 finale, Eoin Morgan wasn't retained by the two-time winners and, hence, the Kolkata-based franchise will have to look for a captain in the auction proceedings.

He is put his name in so he obviously has an opportunity to be a captain if he goes to a franchise that believes he could be a captain."

“If you throw an outside name, obviously Ishan Kishan has led the U-19s. He has led Jharkhand. So, they seem as options,” he added.

IPL 2022: Dinesh Karthik names Indian youngster among 3 star players who could captain a franchise

Team India lost the three ODIs versus Temba Bavuma-led South Africa, in the African nation. After losing the three Tests 2-1, the KL Rahul-led Indian team were whitewashed in the ODIs, conceding the series finale by 4 runs at Newlands, Cape Town.

Opting to bowl first, Rahul-led India restricted the Proteas for 287 all-out in 49.5 overs. While India were kept in the run-chase courtesy Shikhar Dhawan-Virat Kohli's 98-run second-wicket stand, the visitors conceded the momentum with some quick wickets to be reduced to 156-4. Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav then stitched a promising 49-run fifth-wicket stand before the former's departure (26). Surya looked at his usual best, striking at over 120, before falling for a 32-ball 39 (with 4 fours and a six). From thereon, Deepak Chahar's fighting 34-ball 54 revived India's chase before they fell short by 4 runs.

Give him a long run, I'm sure he will do wonders for India. But, he needs a long run, now every time he comes out, he is under pressure from the players above and below him. From MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Ben Stokes to Chris Morris: Most expensive players in IPL auction

Virat Kohli-led India have locked horns with South Africa in the third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town on Tuesday (January 11). With the series interestingly poised at 1-1, there's all to play for both sides in the deciding encounter. For the unversed, Kohli & Co. are on the cusp of winning their maiden Test series on South African soil if they end with a scoreline of 2-1.

While India won the toss and opted to bat first, the onus fell on KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. The two openers have been in form and were involved in a century-stand on Day 1 of the series opener, in Centurion, but failed to score big in the first innings.

Rahul (12) and Mayank (15) made their way back with lowly returns. However, the two became the first Indian opening duo to register 200+ runs in Tests in South Africa.

Rahul and Mayank surpassed Virender Sehwag-Gautam Gambhir to top the list of Indian opening pairs who have got the most runs in the rainbow nation. Sehwag and Gambhir previously held the numero uno position, having accumulated 184 runs to their name. Meanwhile, Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik are placed on the third spot (153 runs).

Both Rahul and Mayank would have been gutted to miss out on scoring big after getting a start. The duo were involved in a 31-run opening stand before Duanne Olivier removed Rahul whereas Kagiso Rabada accounted for Mayank's scalp.

At the coin toss, Kohli told the broadcasters, "Runs on this venue have always worked out well. I am fit and fine. I come in for Vihari. Siraj misses out because of a niggle and Umesh comes in for him. Umesh has been very potent with the ball recently, very handy in the field and with the bat as well. It was a tough decision to choose between the two (Ishant and Umesh). We are expected to win every Test even when we play overseas and that fourth innings chase from South Africa was a special one from them. It is a beautiful stadium and we are very excited."

We are expected to win every Test even when we play overseas and that fourth innings chase from South Africa was a special one from them. It is a beautiful stadium and we are very excited." At lunch on Day 1 of the Cape Town Test, India are 75-2 in 28 overs.

India vs SA, 3rd Test: Rahul, Mayank move past Sehwag-Gambhir to attain unique feat among Indian openers

Bangladesh are in a strong position in the ongoing first Test against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui. Bangladesh batted brilliantly in their first innings to post a strong total of 458 runs on the board in their first innings before bundling out the Kiwis for 328 runs in their first innings.

Bangladesh bowlers continued their impressive show on Day 4 of the Test match as they pegged the New Zealand batters back in their second innings as well. New Zealand ended Day 4 at 147/5 with a slender lead of just 17 runs as Bangladesh look favourites to clinch a win in the series-opener.

While they were fabulous with the ball on Day 4, the visitors had a whimsical moment on the field during New Zealand's second innings. Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque was left red-faced after opting for a bizarre review against veteran Kiwi batter Ross Taylor.

The incident happened in the 37th over of New Zealand's second innings when Taskin bowled a full-length delivery which was blocked well by Taylor. The bowler and Bangladesh fielders instantly went for an appeal, however, the on-filed umpire ruled the Kiwi batter not out. It was quite evident that there was a clear connection between the bat and the ball and there were no pads involved.

However, to everyone's shock, Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque went for a review and was left embarrassed later as the replays showed that the ball had come off the middle of Taylor's bat. Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik cheekily trolled Bangladesh for their bizarre review with a tweet.

Nonetheless, Bangladesh are the favourites to win their first ever Test match in New Zealand after a terrific spell from Ebadot Hossain on Day 4. The fast bowler picked up a four-wicket haul to run through the New Zealand top-order and set up a thrilling final day of action between the two teams.

Bangladesh will be looking to get New Zealand skittled out cheaply and chase down the target without losing much time on Day 5 as they stand on the verge of a historic Test win.

Review for bat before wicket? Dinesh Karthik trolls Bangladesh for 'worst' DRS call against NZ - WATCH

Virat Kohli didn't walk out for the toss in the opening day of the second Test between India and South Africa at The Wanderers, Johannesburg. In his absence, KL Rahul is leading the side, who will also captain the Men in Blue in the upcoming three ODIs versus the Proteas.

In Kohli's absence, Rahul-led India won the toss and opted to bat first in Johannesburg on Monday (January 3). Barring Rahul's 50 and R Ashwin's 46, Indian batters didn't impress as they fell like nine pins and the visitors managed only a paltry 202 in 63.1 overs. The under-pressure senior pros Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane once again failed to impress as the duo managed only 3 runs among themselves. Pujara fell for 3 whereas Rahane returned with a golden duck. Hence, veteran Indian keeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has made a bold claim and stated that one of the two -- among Rahane and Pujara -- can make way for Kohli for the third and final Test.

"At No. 3, in inarguably the world's best cricket team, to find a spot there for three years and not score a hundred - he (Pujara) will know he's got a long, long rope. To a large extent they are playing because of the potential they have, and the performances they have shown, and obviously, they are senior statesmen [in the team] as well. But the long rope they have been given is slowly burning out and you are coming to the end of it. I am very, very sure that they are both aware of it. Also, we have got to see the potential of the players at the back, they have done as well. Now if Virat Kohli returns, you get a feeling that one of the two has to give way," Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

For the unversed, Pujara's last Test ton came in early 2019 whereas Rahane has managed only a handful of half-centuries post his Melbourne Test hundred in the 2020/21 Boxing Day Test versus Australia.

Karthik further added, "When Rahul Dravid was at the fag end of his career, it was actually Pujara who came in and did well at that No. 3 spot, put pressure on him to eventually take his spot... Obviously, that circle comes around... I do think Rahul Dravid will have to make a couple of harsh decisions and if that means dropping one or both of them, he'll be open to it because he knows that they have been given a long rope before... You don't want to set the ground ablaze by making the big decisions right at the outset so I think he's waiting and trying to assess what he can contribute to their careers and if it's not meant to be, it's not meant to be."

With Pujara and Rahane not performing well, India have more options in the form of Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari (who is part of the J'burg Test). India's second innings in the penultimate Test will surely be a litmus test for Pujara and Rahane as they are running against time to hold onto their respective spots in the Test line-up.
