Among the highlights of this year's festival will be the world premiere of the film by R Madhavan titled 'Rocketry: The Nambi Effect' a biographical drama film based on the life of Nambi Narayanan, a former scientist and aerospace engineer of the Indian Space Research Organisation who was falsely accused of espionage.&nbsp;<br />

The film which is produced by Madhavan will be showcased on May 19.<br />

Also, a remastered classic of Satyajit Ray Classic - 'Pratidwandi' will be screened at the Cannes Classic section. This is to mark his centenary celebration.<br />

As the country celebrates its 75th year of Independence, coinciding with Cannes Film Festival's 75th anniversary, a brand new restoration of Indian cinema legend Satyajit Ray's rare movie 'Pratidwandi' will also be presented in an exclusive screening at the movie gala.<br />

According to a press release issued by the festival, 'Pratidwandi' is restored under the National Film Heritage Mission, a project undertaken by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.<br />
<br />
The restoration was carried out by Prime Focus Technologies, Mumbai, and grading was supervised by renowned Indian cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee. The restored version is presented by the National Film Archive of India (NFDC).<br />
<br />
Apart from 'Pratidwandi', Hollywood classic 'Singin' In The Rain', will be presented in a brand new 4K restoration.<br />
The 1952 Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen film, which details the transition from silent film to talkies, will have its screening on the Boulevard de la Croisette.<br />
<br />
Indian film 'Thamp' (The Circus Tent), a 1978 Aravindan Govindan directorial, will have its Restoration World Premiere at the movie gala.<br />

“Intimacy is not there to titillate or to excite the audience. It is natural and honest to these characters. I have an inherent trust in Shakun and so I agreed to the film. We knew we would showcase lovemaking differently in the film but didn’t discuss the specifics of it was initially offered to me.”<br />

Insisting that infidelity is only one of the aspects of the film, Deepika said ‘Gehraiyaan’ was much more. “There is a character who has made choices and has to go through a series of emotions and consequences because of it. She is tired of the relationship that she is- it has lost the spark, she has a troubled past that keeps haunting her, she has been on her own for so long that she is scared to be vulnerable in front of anyone and she is wary of the love that comes her way.&nbsp;Padukone adapts to the complexities with such ease that it seems Alisha is an extension of her.&nbsp;It's great to watch Padukone play an urban character after a long time. Barring 'Chhapaak', her past few screen outings have been in period dramas. Even her last release '83' in which she had a cameo,&nbsp;was set in the 1980s.<br aria-hidden="true" />

Ananya Panday on the other hand holds her own in the film. The film is about Alisha, but Panday's Tia stays with you too, for the actress brings in the right amount of vulnerability to her character.Karwa, on the other hand, gets a raw deal. Despite his charming screen presence, Karwa's Karan is the least flexed out character in the film. He doesn't even get a back story, unlike the other three characters.&nbsp;Much like his character, the writers too were lazy to write his character well.</p>

<p>Pavleen Gujral has an interesting cameo and delivers to her part well. Veterans Naseeruddin Shah and Rajat Kapor also perform well in their limited roles. Scenes between&nbsp; Shah and Padukone are the most special- and sensitively dealt with. The two actors perform the scenes beautifully as well.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Blame it on the Covid. Or the fact that in hindsight the film looks like a documentary instead of a feature film. But Kabir Khan’s highly regarded sports film '83' which was made at an estimated cost of Rs 270 crores, stands to lose over 150 crores at the box office.</p>

<p>One of the film's producers who wishes to go unnamed says it’s futile and self-defeating to play the blame game. “Why blame the Covid resurgence? Even with the threat of the third wave, audiences flocked to see Spiderman and the Telugu film 'Pushpa'.&nbsp;No. If they wanted to see &nbsp;’83 they would have come. But they didn’t. And the main reason for this is the youngsters couldn’t connect with the euphoria of the 1983 World Cup victory. For people who were witnesses to the victory, the film was like a documentary. They knew everything that they saw in the film from before. So we &nbsp;lost audiences both ways.”</p>

<p>Producer Ajay Rai who had tremendous success with his OTT series 'Tabbar' in 2021, feels the film’s brilliance cannot be undermined by its box office performance. &nbsp;“Whatever its box office performance—and let’s not forget '83' was released when the third wave of the pandemic was around the corner—the film is as brilliant as 'Lagaan', the other cricket masterpiece. A film’s quality cannot be judged against its box office performance. Even today we talk about Guru Dutt’s 'Kagaz Ke Phool' and Raj Kapoor’s 'Mera Naam Joker' which were declared flops when released.”</p>

<p>Says trade guru Taran Adarsh, “There's no denying the fact that '83' is an extremely well-made film, but, unfortunately, the praise, the accolades, the critical acclaim and the strong word of mouth hasn't translated or converted into footfalls. The film has worked at select metros, that too at premium multiplexes. Outside metros and especially at smaller centres/mass belt, the film has not found acceptance. The expected numbers are missing. One of the reasons could be that people found it to be a docudrama. It appealed more to the big city audience, the mass belt just did not take to it. Especially the youth and those who relish masala fares. '83' has it all -- it was very well made with strong emotions as its USP. The release period was most appropriate too. Christmas and New Year celebrations are one of the most lucrative periods as far as the movie business is concerned. Unfortunately, '83' did not take off the way it should have. 'Pushpa' and 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', released one week before, continued to pose stiff opposition to '83' in mass belt and metros, respectively. The moviegoers felt these two films were better alternatives than '83'.Sad but true.”</p>

<p>Film critic Raja Sen feels '83' did not offer enough incentive for theatre attendance. “It is becoming increasingly clear that people will only go to theatres for an experience they cannot get at home. They went for 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' because that was a beloved film offering larger than life movie magic. Even the people curious about '83' are willing to wait a few weeks and watch it on a streaming platform. That's the difference.</p>

Films are very subjective experiences and the easy way out is to go with the flow, that’s what hampered majorly. Personally, after watching the film, I &nbsp;felt the film is more of a sports docu-drama and not as an entertaining film. Apart from Ranveer Singh, who was towering in the film, there was no character development of any of the actors which could connect. Yes, winning the 83 World Cup is a fond memory for all but again the youth couldn't connect nor relate to the film. And the youth constitutes a majority of our box office tickets. Also, the marketing, though wide was not focussed. Showcasing fights over cinema screens, distribution delays in advance booking opens further aggravated the matter. High ticket prices was a major concern too. Using bullish media reviews days in advance of the release, pumping expectations of the audiences, which when they actually saw the film was no match, that too hit the sentiments over the end-product. Finally, I feel that the budget was too high for this kind of vision. Had the budget been &nbsp;half &nbsp;of what it is, it would have been a winner, despite all of the above and &nbsp;despite the pandemic.”</p>

<p>Trade analyst Atul Mohan feels there is no clear-cut answer to why '83' underperformed. “Nobody can answer this question. Everybody may come up with one theory or the other but why the audience rejected this modern-day classic nobody will be able to figure it out. Maybe the audience wanted entertainment and that quotient was missing here. But one thing is for sure: the high ticket pricing in today's times did keep a lot of people away from watching the film on the big screen. As we all know all films are available on some streaming platform in 4 weeks time.”</p>

<p>Producer &nbsp;Suneel Darshan adds, “There are several reasons attributed to a movie's failure but this time '83's debacle is because of its docu-drama genre and &nbsp;timing its release so close to Spiderman and &nbsp;more so Pushpa which have collectively snatched away Rs 100 crore of box-office takings in their second week, proved fatal for '83'.”</p>

<p>Akshay Rathi said, “There are multiple reasons why '83' didn’t do that well. One was the whole notion of the third wave of the Pandemic coinciding with the release of '83'. Secondly, &nbsp;in terms of the drama and storytelling possibly catered to a more urbane audience. The average &nbsp;Indian audience wanted to see a far more basic and accessible film. However, nothing can take away from the fact that it is a brilliantly made film. It’s a film that will go down in the history of Indian cinema for so fabulously recreating the golden moment of cricket history. Nothing can take away from that.”</p>

This is my favourite performance by Deepika and the one that most captured the beauty, fragility, &nbsp;strength and muted determination of her personality.</p>

<p><strong>3. &nbsp; &nbsp; Goliyon Ki Raas Leela Rama Leela(2013):</strong> &nbsp;Sanjay &nbsp;Leela Bhansali’s colourful splashy Gujarati Romeo &amp; Juliet where Deepika danced the Garba like there was no tomorrow. No wonder Ranveer Singh fell in love with her as she swung to the rumbustious beats with magnificent elegance. The rest of the performance found Deepika trying to be raunchy. It was like Waheeda Rehman doing a Rakhi Sawant.</p>

<p><strong>4. &nbsp; &nbsp; Chennai Express(2013):</strong> This is where Deepika discovered her funnybones. Playing a South Indian runaway bride her accent, &nbsp;comic timing and her sheer joie de vivre in an innately thought innocuously silly film was priceless. She was far better here in her grasp over the grammar of giggles than in 'Ram Leela'.</p>

More than her chemistry with her screen dad Amitabh &nbsp;Bachchan &nbsp;I &nbsp;liked what she did with Irrfan Khan as they took a road trip from Delhi to Kolkata with Piku’s cantankerous father in tow. 'Piku’s' reined-in acerbity was what we feel when a parent makes unreasonable demands.</p>

<p><strong>6. &nbsp; &nbsp; Bajirao Mastani(2015):</strong> Performed like &nbsp;a true warrior, I especially liked a sequence where Deepika’s Mastani, armed with the confidence of a woman consumed by love no matter how forbidden, barges into the christening ceremony of her lover’s legitimate baby boy. When taunted for tainting the occasion with green, Mastani gently reminds the congregation that saffron and green, are at the end of the day, blood brothers used in Hindu and Muslim religions. Birju Maharaj’s exquisite choreography for Deepika’s 'Mohe rang do laal' dance number echoes Madhubala’s 'Mohe panghat pe nandalal' from the Asif’s war-romance epic. And when Deepika is swathed in chains of captivity she is as much a figure of tragic grandeur as Madhubala singing Beqas pe <em>karam kijiye sakar-e-Madina</em> in Mughal-E-Azam. Here she was as statuesque as Madhubala, riding horses and destiny with equal grace and dignity.</p>

Deepika’s eyes should have been spewing a fiery rage. Instead, she held back. Just giving us glimpses of her wrath at the thought of violation. This is a performance that should have shook us. Instead, it had me desirous of shaking up the actress. Girl, where was the passion?</p>

Chhapaak: </strong>&nbsp;Throughout &nbsp;Meghna Gulzar’s delicately constructed saga of ruination and restoration Deepika Padukone remains unconditionally committed to being respectful faithful and honest to her character. When Malti wins a hard-earned point in the court her dance of joy envelopes our hearts. We live every moment of Malti’s pain and recovery. This is not an easy film to experience. Yes, Deepika’s post-attack prosthetics are frighteningly real and they go a long way in enhancing her performance. &nbsp;But what Deepika does to Malti is much more than cosmetic. Filmmaker Kabir Khan has always been known for his&nbsp;deft handling of important subjects like cross-border terrorism and turning it into entertaining, wholesome blockbusters. His latest '83' documents India's historic win at the Cricket World Cup in 1983. A team that was considered to go back home after the prelim matches, stunned the world as it lifted the first world cup for the country.&nbsp;</p>

No one, including members of the cricket board in India and some of the players, believed that the team had a chance to win the coveted cup. <p>The beauty of '83 lies in the little anecdotes on the players that it beautifully highlighted. How the 'mad' captain Kapil Dev(Ranveer Singh) struggled with his English, tense moments with some of his team members, Gavaskar's(Tahir Raj Bhasin) little tips on the field, Srikanth and other player's funny banter in the locker room, Balvinder Sandhu's(Ammy Virk)&nbsp;insecurity about not being an engineer or doctor but a bowler- all these and more give an insight into the legendary team whose members are considered living legends now. The film highlights why winning the trophy was important- to create an identity in a game that was never ours, to bring glory to the nation in a country that had for years ruled over India. Spruced with actual footage and images of the championship, the film is able to connect the actors to the parts they play on screen.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Written by Khan, Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan and Vasan Bala, '83' has a detailed screenplay and tries to incorporate not just how the cricketers played on the field but also throws light on the political atmosphere of the time where the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi sought to use India's entry to semi-finals to defuse a possible communal riot in a town in northern India.&nbsp;</p>

Making a film on a subject that is still well-etched on everyone's memory and a championship on which a lot of material is already available is slightly tricky. The actors could have easily hammed and the film could have easily made a caricature on the match. But fortunately, despite working on a topic that is known by many in the country, '83' makes for a thrilling watch.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It helps that it is headlined by the versatile Ranveer Singh who picks up Kapil Dev's mannerisms, his broken English and even his Natraj shot accurately. Sing always manages to slip well into the characters he plays onscreen. '83' is no exception. Singh executes the role of Kapil Dev, the slightly shy but determined captain of the Indian Cricket team, well.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the film concentrates most on Singh's character, there are other actors too who stood out for their performance. Tamil actor Jiva plays Kris Srikanth with absolute ease. It is so much fun to watch the actor play the maverick Srikanth so accurately on screen. The other actor who stands out for his performance is actor Amy Wark who plays cricketer Balvinder Sandhu.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pankaj Tripathi as team manager PR Man Singh and Deepika Padukone as Romi Dev too are well cast and leave a lasting impression. It's great to see Deepika and Ranveer playing a regular married couple, sans royalty, wars and period drama (if you know what I mean).</p>

<p>Certain scenes are meta. Neena Gupta, who plays Kapil Dev's mother cheers watching her on-screen son take Sir Viv Richard's wicket. Gupta and Rcihcards were a couple in the 1980s and share daughter, Masaba Gupta. Then Mohinder Amarnath plays his father Lala Amarnath on-screen with Saqib Saleem taking on his role. A portion as the older Amarnath looks at a TV screen cheering his younger self.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At 2hr 45 minutes, the film can be a bit of a stretch. It also tends to focus mostly on Kapil Dev (the cricketer is reportedly one of the co-producers of the film) and perhaps it would have been great to know more about the other cricketers in greater detail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These flaws can easily be overlooked as '83' taps on the emotions of a country that is always hungry for such thrilling wins. It also gives a slice of history to a generation that has grown up on Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and the recent Dhoni and Kohli.</p>

<p>'83' comes at a time when the Omicron variant has once again spread gloom in the country. There is no better way to forget pandemic woes than to watch a moment in Indian cricket history and celebrate the legends. The win gave birth to India's obsession with cricket and '83' will make you celebrate our heroes once again.&nbsp;</p>

It also tends to focus mostly on Kapil Dev (the cricketer is reportedly one of the co-producers of the film) and perhaps it would have been great to know more about the other cricketers in greater detail. These flaws can easily be overlooked as '83' taps on the emotions of a country that is always hungry for such thrilling wins. It also gives a slice of history to a generation that has grown up on Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and the recent Dhoni and Kohli. '83' comes at a time when the Omicron variant has once again spread gloom in the country. There is no better way to forget pandemic woes than to watch a moment in Indian cricket history and celebrate the legends. Where else could the audience feel the collective joy of India's triumph at the World Cup? We have gone to considerable lengths to ensure we recreate the event down to its minutest detail. Yes. And each time we needed verification of some detail from the 1983 match, we would make her call up her father and his colleagues from the World Cup. It could be something as trivial as the colour of a player's gloves on the field that historic day in 1983…We had to get every detail right. We have thousands of people out there with every detail of the match etched vividly in their memory. We didn’t want to be caught on the wrong foot.</p>

<p><strong>I believe you had &nbsp;the entire original team on board as consultants?</strong></p>

<p>Well, we had &nbsp;Balwinder Sandhu who played in the World Cup and who is now a very respected coach. He knew everything we needed to know about the match. The actors playing the cricketers trained for a year. Ranveer Singh trained for three months.</p>

<p><strong>The reaction to the film so far had been expectedly overwhelming?</strong></p>

<p>I am humbled by the response so far. Everyone who has seen it has loved the film. I have women telling me they hated cricket because of what it did to the men in their families—making them zombies in front of the television set for three days—changing their minds after seeing the film. During the climactic match, I heard people sobbing. I’ve not had this experience before. Not even in 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan'.</p>

In 2001 Anurag Kashyap was all set to direct a film on the life and games of Kapil Dev. It was going to be a &nbsp;big-budgeted Rs 80 crores opus(which for those times was a fortune, equivalent to &nbsp;160 crores today) &nbsp;with &nbsp;Kapil starring as himself. When I had asked Kapil who would play Kapil he had drawled in his typical <em>Kapil da jawaab nahin </em>style, “Who else can play Kapil Dev but me? Of course, I can’t sing and dance. But the rest of my &nbsp;life is &nbsp;my life only.” The Kashyap project never got off the ground, like many of his pipedreams. &nbsp;Ironically &nbsp;'83' is co-produced by Phantom Films the production house which Kashyap once belonged to and which he finally broke up.</p>

<p><strong>3)</strong>&nbsp;Kapil Dev insisted '83' is not about him. When I spoke to him after the film was announced he told me irritably, “First of all, it is not a film on me. So it is not my bio-pic. It is a &nbsp;film about the 1983 &nbsp;World Cup. Not about me.” &nbsp;When I &nbsp;gently pointed out that, Kapil was an integral part of the &nbsp;1983 &nbsp;World Cup series he snapped back, &nbsp;“I was! But so were Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath and so many others. So the &nbsp;film will probably be as much about them like me.”</p>
