It will take some time to see MS Dhoni - the finisher, that everyone is waiting for, says Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming

As his side fell short in its run chase against Rajasthan Royals despite having the former India captain at the crease.

Dhoni came out to bat at number seven in Tuesday's match and took time to settle down before unleashing his powerful shots. By the time he found his range, he did not have much balls at his disposal to knock off the required runs.

They eventually lost the match by 16 runs with Dhoni staying unbeaten on 29 off 17 balls.

Dhoni argued that the extended two-week quarantine of his side hampered his preparations as he did not get enough time for practice.

"We have this question every year. He was in in the 14th over, which is pretty much optimal time, and sort of batted accordingly. He is coming back from not playing a huge amount of cricket," Fleming said at the post-match press conference.

"So, the expectations to see him at his best is gonna take some time. But you see him towards the end, he was very good. Faf du Plessis carried the form, so we weren't too far away. It wasn't the batting that was the worry to be honest."

Dhoni sent the likes of Sam Curran and Kedar Jadhav ahead of him.

Asked about the rationale behind the move, the former New Zealand captain said, "MS is a specialist towards the end of the innings, always has been. Curran was there trying to hit and keep us in the game at that point when we were falling behind. He's got good hitting power like we saw."

"Ruturaj...It was his first game and we wanted to get him into the game into the order. We wanted to be aggressive, we've got a long batting order and we're just trying to use our resources smartly."

Fleming said his spinners were slow in adjusting the length of their deliveries (they bowled overpitched). Sanju Samson (74) was on fire against their spinners.

"Their (RR) hitting was very good in the 8 overs they faced. It was a good surface (to bat) and we were slow on adjusting. We did not adjust quickly. There was intent to adjust but execution was poor.

"So it was dangerous time and we had to just hang in there and try. We came close to pulling back to a manageable score but that last over took us out of reach."

Royals' tail-ender Jofra Archer hit Lungi Ngidi four sixes in the final over which yielded 30 runs to take the total to 216 for 7.

Royals' captain Steve Smith said Samson's brilliant performance has given him more options at top of the order.

"Samson takes the game head on and he hit some seriously good sixes. He has a positive intent and my role was to give him more strike. Fortunately it worked well," Smith, who was playing his first match after suffering concussion related issues in the United Kingdom, said.

"It gives more options. Samson played incredibly well. It seems everything he was hitting was going for a six. It was a serious innings. Jos (Buttler) coming for next game it is a big plus for us. Jofra (Archer) at the back end was absolutely amazing."

The star Australian batsman, however, said that Buttler is likely to bat as opener in their next game.

"We will wait and see. It gives options, does not it. We will do what we think is the best. Jos obviously has an incredible record on top. He probably slots himself back and it gives options for sure."

Talking about Jofra's batting heroics, Smith said, "Jofra at the end was magnificent, getting us up to that total. He loves batting, he is a terrific player for us and did well with the ball as well."

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman and Australian captain Aaron Finch has sounded a warning for other Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 teams as he said that he is well capable of taking on the bowlers if required while adding his role will not be limited to anchoring the match while opening with young star Devdutt Padikkal.

While Mumbai Indians will be gunning to make a comeback after their season opener defeat against Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders would be hoping to put the ‘Bogey Team’ tag away from Mumbai Indians and start their IPL 2020 journey with a win. KKR have an exciting side on paper with the addition of Eoin Morgan, Pat Cummins and Tom Banton expected to add that extra layer of depth to their squad.
While many former cricketers and pundits have slammed the umpire for taking a very rash call which resulted in a defeat to Kings XI Punjab, former England spinner Monty Panesar said people should not be harsh on the umpire and should rather call for the usage of technology so that such incidents don’t ruin the fun of IPL in future.

“Let’s not be harsh on the umpire. It’s a thankless job but yes, that was a wrong call. Umpires have to use technology if it is available and if the rules don’t permit it then there should be a tweak so that we don’t see such mistakes in future.
Square-leg umpire Menon had signaled a short run as Jordan had not grounded his bat inside the crease when taking two runs. However, TV replays showed Jordan’s bat was inside the crease. Controversy erupted in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 after square-leg umpire Nitin Menon wrongfully called a run short for Kings XI Punjab during their match against Delhi Capitals in the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on Sunday as KXIP suffered a heartbreaking defeat against DC in the Super Over.

KXIP are understandably unhappy at this decision. Should the umpires have intervened? 🤔#IPL2020 pic.twitter.com/QjJKHAmGMi — Wisden India (@WisdenIndia) September 21, 2020 × “Let’s not be harsh on the umpire. It’s a thankless job but yes, that was a wrong call. Umpires have to use technology if it is available and if the rules don’t permit it then there should be a tweak so that we don’t see such mistakes in future. Kings XI Punjab have every right to be disappointed as it probably cost them crucial two points,” Panesar said during WION’s show IPL Shorts. ALSO READ: IPL 2020: KXIP appeals against controversial 'short run' call as Preity Zinta fumes Square-leg umpire Menon had signaled a short run as Jordan had not grounded his bat inside the crease when taking two runs. However, TV replays showed Jordan’s bat was inside the crease. But nothing could be done as the third umpire does not have the authority to overturn an on-field call, unless it is referred for review. Delhi Capitals took the game to the Super Over after Kings XI Punjab failed to take one run off the last three deliveries before clinching the match after a terrific over by Kagiso Rabada. Next up in IPL 2020 is the much-awaited match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore as Virat Kohli marks his return to the field after a prolonged break. Plenty of stars will be in action with the likes of Rashid Khan, Jonny Bairstow, David Warner, AB de Villiers all set to take to the field in IPL 2020 for their respective teams. In what comes as a massive blow to Rajasthan Royals (RR), English wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler will miss RR’s opening clash against Chennai Super Kings in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. Buttler travelled separately with his family to the UAE and as a result he will have to undergo the mandatory six-day quarantine period before he is allowed to play a match. Buttler confirmed the development on Sunday during Rajasthan Royals’ Instagram live session. The swashbuckling batsman had missed most of England’s limited-overs matches against Australia due to family commitments. However, as Buttler travelled separately, he will have to undergo the six-day quarantine period. Meanwhile, Buttler was hopeful that English all-rounder Ben Stokes will be able to join the Rajasthan Royals squad at some point in time during the course of IPL 2020. Stokes missed the majority of English summer as he wanted to be with his family in New Zealand, and hasn’t provided any update on whether he will play in the IPL 2020.
Many experts and pundits have had both DC and KXIP in their top four team prediction and the encounter promises to be a thriller in Dubai.

In head-to-head clashes, Kings XI Punjab have a slight advantage over the Delhi outfit with 14 wins to their name in comparison to DC’s 10. In IPL 2019, it was all equal as both the teams won a match each but it was DC who finished in the playoffs spot.

The bowling department also looks better than last season for both the franchises, with DC having the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Amit Mishra among others.
Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has confirmed that their star all-rounder Dwayne Bravo will miss another couple of matches of the 13th IPL.

Despite missing the seasoned West Indian who is recovering from an injury, three-times winners CSK began their campaign on a positive note, beating arch-rivals Mumbai Indians by five wickets here on Saturday.

"Dwayne Bravo is out for a couple of games," Fleming said in the post-match press conference.
Bravo picked a niggle during the recently-concluded Caribbean Premier League and didn't bowl in the final due to a knee injury.

Playing in place of Bravo, English all-rounder Sam Curran smashed 18 off six balls to help CSK cross the finish line after Ambati Rayudu and Faf du Plessis' scored brisk half-centuries.

In his quota of four overs, Curran returned impressive figures of 1/28 while picking up the wicket of the dangerous looking Quinton de Kock, and then played a cameo with the bat.

"Curran's performance was terrific," Fleming said.

The head coach also heaped praise on Rayudu, who played a match-winning knock, making a 48-ball 71 and along with du Plessis, who scored an unbeaten 58, helped Chennai chase down a target of 163 with four balls to spare.

"Rayudu has been nothing short of fantastic. He has been pretty emotional and played a great knock," Fleming said.

The former New Zealand captain further said that the pitch was "difficult" to score and that the team is looking for ways to find the right balance.

While addressing his team's post-match press conference, Mumbai Indians pacer James Pattinson said that they were looking to bowl first.

"There's little bit of wetness around the grass. It skidded on a little bit. It was a good wicket overall," the Australian added.

Speaking about Kieron Pollard's batting position, Pattinson said that he expects the West Indian to bat higher up in the order in the future.

Pollard batted at number six against CSK.

"I think between him (Pollard) and the two Pandya brothers, it's just going to float at number 5, 6 and 7 depending on the situation of the game. I'm sure he'll bat higher at some stage, depending on the situation in the game," said Pattinson.

The bowler also talked about the absence of crowd in the IPL.

"You just have to make your own noise out there. It's obviously hard when you don't have fans cheering behind you, especially the Mumbai Indians fans who are great.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who retired from international cricket last month, is in top shape and ready to lead the Chennai Super Kings in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League on Saturday, head coach Stephen Fleming has said.

With Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 kickstarting from Satursday, former Australian skipper and now the head coach of Delhi Capitals said that there would be less pressure on players of performing as the matches will be played behind closed doors in front of empty stands.

Defending champions Mumbai Indians take on Chennai Super Kings in the season opener in Abu Dhabi, whereas Kings XI Punjab will lock horns with Kings XI Punjab on Sunday. Ahead of their match against KXIP, the DC head coach said that less atmosphere and noise create lesser pressure on players.
But with 'King Kohli' backed by big guns including South Africa's AB de Villiers and Aaron Finch of Australia, Bangalore will be optimistic about doing better than last year, when they finished with the wooden spoon.

- David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad) -

Back as captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad two years after being replaced over a cheating scandal, Warner is aiming for the top.

The explosive opener smashed 692 runs from 12 matches last year after being barred from the 2018 edition over the 'Sandpapergate' affair during a Test against South Africa.

But Warner's leadership and exploits with the bat helped Hyderabad clinch the 2016 title, and he is looking for a repeat of that in the UAE.

"I am sure I will be doing my very, very best to try and lift the IPL trophy coming this year," he said, after being reinstated as Hyderabad skipper.

- Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals) -

Buttler has formed the backbone of England's one-day batting since their World Cup triumph last year and is a key player of his IPL team, the Rajasthan Royals.

The wicketkeeper-batsman recently hit his T20 international best of 77 not out against Australia in what seemed a perfect tune-up for the IPL.

Buttler, who has a strike rate of over 150 in the IPL, plays alongside fellow countrymen Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer for the inaugural champions, who will be hoping to do better than last year when they finished seventh.

- Andre Russell (Kolkata Knight Riders) -

A West Indian power-hitter who has single-handedly won games for Kolkata Knight Riders, Russell is any bowler's nightmare.

The all-rounder was the IPL's Most Valuable Player last year, with 11 wickets and 510 runs for Kolkata.

The two-time champions are considering promoting the middle-order batsman to the number three position and get the maximum out of his attacking play.

"If he comes in at number three and bats 60 balls, he might even score a double-hundred. Anything can happen with 'Dre' Russ. He is almost the heartbeat of the team," said KKR team mentor David Hussey.

- Rashid Khan (Sunrisers Hyderabad) -

The Afghanistan spin sensation passed 300 T20 wickets during the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League.

Rashid, 21, has plied his trade in T20 leagues across the globe but it was his exploits for the IPL's Hyderabad team that grabbed the most attention.

The world's top-ranked T20 bowler has claimed 55 wickets in 46 IPL games and is handy as a lower-order batsman.

According to his Hyderabad team-mate Bhuvneshwar Kumar, having Rashid is "is always a delight for any team".

IPL 2020: Ahead of MI vs CSK opener, #WelcomeBackDhoni trends on Twitter

With England and Australian players joining in their respective franchises just days ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, teams have been handed a massive relief as all the 21 players who arrived to the UAE from the United Kingdom will only have undergo 36 hours of quarantine contrary to the earlier reported six days.

"Yes, I can confirm that all the English and Australian players have to now undergo 36-hour quarantine instead of six days.
Reportedly, the BCCI had a word with the officials of at least three franchises which have Australian and English players in their squad and the verdict has been satisfactory. "The BCCI did a great job in reducing the quarantine period to 36 hours. This means teams like Chennai Super Kings (Josh Hazlewood and Tom Curran), Rajasthan Royals (Smith, Buttler, Archer) will have all their players available from their first game.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Friday released their official anthem for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. While there was massive hype ahead of RCB anthem release, outrage was sparked on social media platform Twitter after RCB’s official handle posted the video song featuring the likes of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Yuzvendra Chahal among many others.

Fans were left upset over the use of Hindi language in RCB’s anthem as they questioned the franchise over the less usage of Kannada language in the anthem. Even former India cricketer and one of the stalwarts of Karnataka, Dodda Ganesh was left unimpressed with the new RCB anthem.

"The Official RCB Anthem is here! And it's dedicated to the best fans in the world. Time to crank up the volume to the maximum, 12th Man Army," RCB tweeted.
