Thirty-two-year-old Simon Harmer, will return to the Proteas Test set-up for the outbound tour to New Zealand. The last time the right-hand, off-spinner appeared for the national team was against India in November 2015.

He is joined by Lutho Sipamla in the squad of 17 that departs for the two-match series on February 2.In a move to minimize COVID-19 risk, both fixtures, which will form part of the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship, will now take place at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

Harmer returns due to the imminent nuptial of George Linde, who is not available to take part in the tour. Prenelan Subrayen is also not available for selection, due to a groin injury. He is making good progress in his rehabilitation.

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has made yet another controversial claim stating that there is possibly a rift in the current Indian team. In the past few months, Indian cricket has witnessed massive changes in the leadership group with Virat Kohli stepping down as captain from all three formats of the game. While Rohit Sharma is now in charge of the white-ball team, the selectors are yet to announce India's next Test captain.

Kohli had announced that he will step down as India's T20I captain after the T20 World Cup 2021 last year before being replaced by Rohit as the ODI captain as well. The move didn't go down well for Indian cricket as Kohli had a public fallout with the BCCI in December last year. The former captain revealed he was informed about the decision of his sacking as ODI captain only ninety minutes before it was made official.

Kohli shockingly announced his resignation from Test captaincy earlier this month, a day after India's 2-1 loss in the Test series against South Africa. While it is no secret that the relations between Kohli and the Indian cricket board have turned sour in the last few months, there have also been speculations of a possible rift in the Indian team.

Former Pakistan pacer Akhtar, who follows Indian cricket closely, believes there is a rift in the Indian team at present and that Kohli's decision to Test captaincy was not his own, as projected.

"I see a rift in this team. Important to see how the team will be handled. I don't think Kohli quit because he wanted to, such a situation was created that he had to leave captaincy. There are a lot of reasons behind Kohli's decision to leave Test captaincy, that I cannot say because of confidentiality," Akhtar said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Akhtar also shared his views on India's 'humiliating' 3-0 defeat in the recently-concluded ODI series against South Africa. India suffered three back-to-back defeats in the series under KL Rahul's captaincy as permanent skipper Rohit Sharma had to sit out due to a hamstring injury.

Akhtar wants the Indian team to regroup well and keep the unrest aside to focus on the challenges ahead. The former Pakistan pacer backed India to bounce back strongly from their debacle against the Proteas.

"The recent performances have left India humiliating. I don't think the Indian team should be losing to such a South Africa team, that too in a demoralizing manner," said Akhtar.

"Moving ahead from this point, the BCCI, Management, captain and the rest of the players will have to regroup. The issues of unrest will have to be put to an end by the management. I didn't see a combined effort by the team in South Africa," he added.

India will next take on West Indies in an ODI series at home starting from next month.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has issued a warning to the Lucknow Super Giants players ahead of their debut season in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gambhir, a two-time IPL-winning captain will be serving as the mentor of the newly-integrated franchise in IPL 2022. The former India opener is known for his outspoken nature and never shies away from putting his message across loud and clear.

Gambhir will be returning to the Indian Premier League for the first time since his retirement as a player and will be taking up the role of a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants. Lucknow are one of the two new teams who are set to make their debut in the IPL this year. Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction which is all set to take place next month, Gambhir has sent a stern message to the current players and the probable players of the franchise.

Gambhir has said he would not want players in his team who are playing in the IPL with the ultimate aim of playing for India. The former opener believes playing for India is a byproduct of the player's performances in the league and that if a player is using the IPL as a platform to play for India in future then he is being dishonest to the franchise.

"When I’ve captained, I have always said I don’t want players thinking of playing for India. I want players thinking of playing for the franchise. Playing for India is just the byproduct," Gambhir said on the show Backstage with Boria.

"If you think of playing for India and you start saying that Lucknow gives me that platform to play for India, then you are being dishonest to the franchise. But if you were to play for Lucknow and deliver it for Lucknow, eventually you will end up playing for India."

Gambhir believes the players' ultimate aim should not be to use IPL as a platform t relaise their dream of playing for India but to make sure they give their hundred percent in delivering for the franchise and win the tournament for them. The former India opener said players should take IPL as a platform to showcase their talent.

"So probably in those two months, I would not want any of the players saying or thinking that my job or my ultimate aim is to play for India. Their ultimate aim for those two months is to win the tournament for the franchise. And if they look to do that with their performances, they will eventually go on to play for India," said Gambhir.

"And IPL is not a platform to go on to play for India. IPL is a platform to showcase your talent to the world, and that is how players should think about it," he added.

On January 15, Virat Kohli stepped down as the Indian Test captain. This came as a shocker for the whole cricketing fraternity, given the 33-year-old led India with great success in the red-ball format. Kohli's decision came on the following day after India had lost the three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the African nation.

With him stepping down as the Test captain, Kohli's overall captaincy tenure for Team India also came to an end. Talking about Kohli's credentials as a captain in the purest format, he led India to their maiden Test series win in Australia, ensured an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests in the United Kingdom in mid-2021 and to the inaugural WTC final. In addition, India were dominant at home under his leadership skills.

Kohli's successor, thus, has huge shoes to fill in. Ex-head coach Ravi Shastri feels Rohit Sharma, who is already the limited-overs captain, should take over as the Test captain as well, with wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant being groomed under him.

Former Indian coach Shastri has suggested Rohit's name as the successor and called him the natural choice, with him already being the vice-captain in whites.

"If Rohit is fit, why can't he be the captain in Tests too. He was appointed vice-captain for the South Africa series but he couldn't go there because of injuries. So why not, if he was made the vice-captain, why can't he be promoted to captaincy," Shastri said to India Today.

"Rohit's vice-captain has to be seen. Rahul Dravid has to see who that person could be because that player has to be a certainty in the playing XI. I think, why name the vice-captain at all? Decide on the tour who is the most experienced player, who is playing well. You announce your vice-captain in advance, and later you realise that your vice-captain doesn't fit in your XI," stated the ex-Indian head coach and all-rounder.

Shastri opined on Pant and claimed he can be looked upon as a future captain. "Rishabh is a tremendous young player. As a coach, I was very fond of him, his attitude and the good thing about him was that he would always listen to you. A lot of people say, he always does what he wants but that's not true. He reads the game well and would always put my team effort first than self. So he should always be kept in mind for leadership," said Shastri.

India's next assignment in the red-ball format is versus Sri Lanka at home, in February-March. Before that, the national selectors will have to take a call and name the next Test captain. Some other contenders are Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul or R Ashwin.

Ravi Shastri feels Pant should be kept in mind for leadership, goes ahead with senior pro as next Test captain

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar feels current India head coach Rahul Dravid has a lot of challenges lying ahead of him amid the difficult phase in Indian cricket. Indian cricket is in turmoil ever since Virat Kohli decided to step down as the captain of the Test side after the team's 2-1 defeat in the recently-concluded Test series against South Africa.

While he had himself decided to leave T20I captaincy last year, Kohli was replaced as the ODI captain by Rohit Sharma in December last year before deciding to quit Test captaincy as well. In Rohit's absence, KL Rahul is currently leading the Indian team in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa and there have been questions over his leadership credentials after the Men in Blue suffered back-to-back defeats in the first two games of the series.

After losing the first ODI by 31 runs, India lost the second game by seven wickets on Friday to concede the three-match series as the hosts took an unassailable 2-0 lead. Akhtar said Indian cricket is not going down after Kohli's downfall as the leader of the team but Dravid has a big job as the head coach.

The former Pakistan pacer made a glaring remark on Dravid and said the legendary cricketer will have to prove he is not an overrated coach.

"No, Indian cricket is not going down. You have to take control of the situation. Rahul Dravid has a big job in his hands. I hope people don't say that he's an overrated coach. He has to prove that, and obviously he has big shoes to fill in the place of Ravi Shastri. He has a big task ahead, let's see how he performs," Akhtar told PTI.

Dravid is working with the Indian senior team for the first time in his coaching career but has been in the BCCI system since 2014. He was the head coach of the Indian U-19 team for four years and inspired the U-19 team to glory at the 2018 U-19 World Cup. He has also worked with the India A team and a couple of IPL franchises.

Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan and England's Tammy Beaumont were on Sunday named the ICC men's and women's T20 Player of the Year, respectively, following a prolific 2021.

Rizwan ruled the roost in 2021 when it came to the shortest format in the men's game, while Beaumont finished the year as the third-highest run-getter in women's T20Is.

Aggregating a staggering 1,326 runs in only 29 matches, Rizwan struck at an average of 73.66 and a strike-rate of 134.89. Apart from his exploits with the bat, he was as solid as ever behind the stumps, playing a key role in Pakistan's run to the semifinals during the T20 World Cup in the UAE, where he ended up as the third-highest run-scorer.

He also scored his maiden T20I century against South Africa in Lahore early in the year and continued his form with a brilliant knock of 87 against West Indies in Karachi.

With another T20 World Cup coming up next year, Pakistan will hope that Rizwan continues in the same vein.
Rizwan had also smashed an unbeaten 79 off 55 deliveries in the World Cup opener against India, helping Pakistan record their maiden win over the arch-rivals in the global event.

Meanwhile, Beaumont was her side's highest run-getter in the year in T20Is. In a low-scoring rubber against New Zealand away from home, Beaumont was the top scorer and was awarded the Player of the Series for scoring 102 runs in three matches.

She scored a brilliant fifty in a match against India, though it went in vain after a lower-order collapse. Beaumont continued to make merry against New Zealand, this time when they visited England for a limited-overs tour. She once again finished as the highest run-getter in the series with 113 runs.

Her 97 in the series opener against New Zealand at home propelled England to their highest T20I total in 2021.

South Africa batter Janneman Malan on Sunday was named as ICC`s Emerging Men`s Cricketer of 2021. Malan scored 715 runs in 17 international matches at a 47.66 average and 101.85 strike rate, including two centuries and three fifties.

Even though Malan made his international debut for South Africa in 2019, he couldn`t establish himself as a permanent name in white-ball cricket until one breathtaking knock after another at the top of the order in 2021.

Malan played a total of eight ODIs and nine T20Is in the year, but it was the one-day format where he showed his real potential. His voyage started with the T20I series in Pakistan, followed by another ODI and T20I series against the same side at home.

At the end of those two series, he had already shown the world his ability with two excellent knocks of 70 and 55 in Centurion. But his moment of fame arrived when he smashed an unbeaten 177, the fourth-highest score by a South African in ODIs, against Ireland in Dublin.

He followed that up with another excellent knock of 121 against Sri Lanka in Colombo and thus ended the year on a good note. Malan`s most memorable knock in 2021 has to be his unbeaten 177 against Ireland. He looked absolutely on song that day and played numerous exquisite shots around the ground. Whether it was a spinner or a pacer, he treated them with equal disdain.

His innings consisted of a total of 16 fours and 6 massive sixes, which sums up how the bowlers suffered in that match. The 25-year-old also built a terrific 225-run opening stand with Quinton de Kock, who scored a ton in that match as well.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has struggled to find his form for India for quite a while now as his rough patch continues in international cricket. In the ongoing ODI series between India and South Africa, Bhuvneshwar has remained wicket-less in the first two matches and has been taken for plenty of runs by the South African batters.

The senior pacer's form is concerning for the Indian team as he has been failing to pick wickets at regular intervals in white-ball cricket and is no more the death-over specialist that he used to be during his peak years for India. Bhuvneshwar has so far bowled 18 overs in the first two matches against South Africa and has conceded 131 runs without taking a wicket.

After losing the series-opener of the three-match ODI series by 31 runs, India lost the must-win second ODI against South Africa by 7 wickets on Saturday to go 2-0 down and concede the series. Speaking about India's disappointing show in the series so far, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar said India need to tweak their bowling attack in white-ball cricket going forward.

Gavaskar has urged the Indian team to look beyond Bhuvneshwar despite his experience and wants the management to back someone like Deepak Chahar, who can take the senior pacer's spot in the squad. Gavaskar lamented Bhuvneshwar's poor form in the last couple of years and suggested it's time to replace him with Chahar.

"Bhuvi has been a tremendous servant of Indian cricket but in the last year or so, even in franchise level T20 cricket, he has been expensive. Not so much at the start of the innings but towards the end. He used to bowl those brilliant yorkers and slower deliveries, but those are not working anymore," Gavaskar told Sports Today.

"That can happen, the opposition is studying you all the time and they will know how to be prepared for it. So maybe it is time to look at somebody else.

"I think it's time to look at Deepak Chahar now. He is younger, pretty much the same kind of bowler and bats handily down the order," he added.

India are expected to make some changes in the playing XI and give game time to the likes of Chahar, Ruturaj Gaikwad and others in the third and final ODI of the ongoing series against South Africa on Sunday (January 23). It remains to be seen if India will stick with Bhuvneshwar or replace him with someone like Chahar in the playing XI.

'Time to look at somebody else': Sunil Gavaskar suggests Bhuvneshwar Kumar's replacement for Team India

South Africa bagged their second win on the trot in the ongoing three-match ODI series against India as they thrashed the visitors by seven wickets in the second ODI at the Boland Park in Paarl on Friday (January 21). It was yet another dominant performance from the hosts, who chased down the target of 288 runs comfortably with seven wickets to spare.

Rishabh Pant's brilliant knock of 85 runs went in vain as India lost the game comprehensively and conceded the series with back-to-back defeats. It was a must-win game for the KL Rahul-led side after a 31-run loss in the series opener at the same venue. However, South Africa once again proved too good for the Men in Blue.

Opting to bat first, India got off to a decent start with a 63-run stand for the first wicket between openers Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan. Aiden Markram drew the first blood for the Proteas as he got rid of Dhawan on 29 off 38 balls before Keshav Mahara sent Virat Kohli packing on a duck to pile misery on India.

However, Rahul then combined with Pant to steady the ship as the duo put together a 115-run stand for the third wicket. While Rahul scored 55 off 79 balls, Pant displayed some brilliant strokeplay in his quickfire 85 off just 71 balls. The wicket-keeper batter missed out on a well-deserved hundred but created the record for the highest individual score by an Indian wicket-keeper batter in an ODI in South Africa.

With the help of half-centuries from Rahul, Pant and crucial cameos from Shardul Thakur (40) and R Ashwin (25), India posted a fighting total of 287 runs on the board in their quota of 50 overs. However, the bowlers let the visitors down as South Africa had chased down the target comfortably.

Openers Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock slammed half-centuries apiece to set up an easy chase for the hosts. While De Kock scored 78 off 66 balls laced with seven fours and three sixes, Malan missed out his century by just nine runs as he notched up a superb 91 off 108 balls.

The South African openers took the Indian bowlers to the cleaners and got the hosts off to a perfect start in the run-chase. The duo added a huge stand of 132 runs for the first wicket before handy knocks from skipper Temba Bavuma (35), Aiden Markram (37) and Rassie van der Dussen (37) helped South Africa overhaul the target with 11 balls to spare.

With the seven-wicket win in the second ODI, South Africa have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead and clinched the series. India will be looking to bounce back to winning ways and earn a consolation victory when the two teams lock horns in the third and final ODI on Sunday (January 23).

Also Read: Rahul's impact as a batter diminishes when he captains, he should learn from Kohli: Sanjay Manjrekar With the help of half-centuries from Rahul, Pant and crucial cameos from Shardul Thakur (40) and R Ashwin (25), India posted a fighting total of 287 runs on the board in their quota of 50 overs. India will be looking to bounce back to winning ways and earn a consolation victory when the two teams lock horns in the third and final ODI on Sunday (January 23).

Five Indian players, including skipper Yash Dhull, were on Friday ruled out of team's final league game against Uganda in the U-19 World Cup after testing positive for COVID-19 in latest RT-PCR tests.

Out of the six players, who were isolated before the match against Ireland on Wednesday, only all-rounder Vasu Vats tested negative, an ICC source told PTI.

The team, which has already qualified for the quarterfinals, is set to take on Uganda in the final Group B game on Saturday in Tarouba, Trinidad.

Skipper Dhull, Aaradhya Yadav and Shaik Rasheed, who had tested positive in the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), have returned positive reports in the RT-PCR test along with Manav Parakh, who tested negative in RAT. Sidharth Yadav had already tested positive in the RT-PCR test before the Ireland game.

"One positive out of this unfortunate situation is that the 11 who played against Ireland have all tested negative," said the ICC source.
Among the infected, Dhull has the worst symptoms but he along with the other players, "should be fine" before their quarterfinal on January 29 provided they top Group B.

India registered a thumping win over Ireland to qualify for the knockouts after barely managing to field a team in the wake of COVID outbreak in their camp.

All the infected players are required to undergo five days of isolation as per tournament protocols and can only rejoin the team after returning three negative tests within that period.

How did the virus enter the bubble?

After winning the Asia Cup in the UAE, the Indian team had flown to the Caribbean via Amsterdam. A support staff member, who is fine now, had tested positive during the hard quarantine upon arrival in Guyana after catching the infection in transit and it is believed the players contracted the virus from him.

The entire squad underwent a five-day hard quarantine in Guyana upon arrival and took three RTPCR tests within that period. However, with the test report taking as long as 48 hours, the third test report was only made available on the seventh day.

"The players mingled with the coach in that period and that seems be to be most likely source of outbreak in the team," added the source.

It has also been learnt that the tournament's bio-bubble could be stricter with team not being allocated dedicated floors in the hotel as it was the Asia Cup in the UAE.

However, despite a tight bubble in Dubai, the virus managed to enter the environment and a league game between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh had to be abandoned after two officials involved in the game tested positive.

U-19 World Cup: Skipper Yash Dhull and 4 other Indian players test positive for COVID-19

India are one of the strongest teams in international cricket at present and have enjoyed tremendous success across all three formats over the last few years. While they have been dominant both at home and overseas in bilateral cricket, the Indian team has failed to go the distance in major ICC tournaments.

India last won a major ICC trophy under former captain MS Dhoni in 2013 and have since failed to bring an end to their ICC trophy drought despite coming close on several occasions. India reached the final of the 2014 T20 World Cup where they lost against Sri Lanka before losing in the semi-finals of both the 2015 ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup in 2016.

India came closer than ever to bringing an end to the drought when they reached the final of the Champions Trophy in 2017 under Virat Kohli's captaincy. However, the Men in Blue lost to arch-rivals Pakistan before suffering a heartbreaking defeat in the semi-final of the 2019 ODI World Cup against New Zealand.

India failed to qualify for the knockout stages in the T20 World Cup 2021 last year and also lost the final of the World Test Championship against New Zealand last year. India have not won an ICC trophy for almost nine years now as the team continues to aim to bring an end to the long-standing drought.

Recently, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar explained the reason behind lack of success in ICC tournaments for India. The former India captain feels the lack of all-rounders has cost India in big tournaments. He cited the examples of how all great Indian teams in the past have had batters in the middle-order, who could also be handy with the ball in their hands.

Gavaskar cited the examples of the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina, who batted extremely well in the middle-order and also were brilliant as part-time bowlers for captain Dhoni. Gavaskar feels the current Indian team lacks such versatile all-rounders which is the reason behind their failures in big tournaments.

"There is only one reason why this team has been left disappointed in ICC tournaments (ODI and T20I). If you look at the teams that won the 1983 and 2011 World Cups or even the 1985 World Championship of Cricket-winning side, they were all full of outstanding all-rounders," Gavaskar told AajTak.

"There were many batters who could bowl and the bowlers could bat. The numbers 6,7 and 8 requires all-rounders which all these victorious teams had. The likes of Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina could bowl and bat very well.

"This is the one shortcoming that the Indian team has over the past two or three years, as a result of which the captain has not had many options and the team has lacked flexibility," the former India captain added.

India will get another shot at redemption when they take part in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year. The Indian team has been placed in Pool 2 with Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa. The Men in Blue will once again open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan.

'There is only one reason': Sunil Gavaskar explains why India haven't won an ICC trophy since 2013

It was a nostalgic affair as cricket fans got to witness some of the yesteryear greats ply their trade on the field once again in the ongoing inaugural edition of the Legends League Cricket (LLC). The tournament which features some of the best cricketers from the bygone era kicked off at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman on Thursday.

India Maharajas locked horns with Asian Lions in the opening game of the tournaments. While the India Maharajas team consists of some of the Indian greats like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, RP Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Irfan Pathan among others, the Asia Lions squad has legends from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

As the two teams met on Thursday, the battler between former India batter Mohammad Kaif and former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar stole the show. The old foes came up against each other once again and Akhtar was once again left a little annoyed as Kaif chose to walk down the track while facing him.

Akhtar, who was regarded as one of the fiercest bowlers of his time, still holds the record for bowling the fastest delivery in international cricket. Famously known as the Rawalpindi Express, Akhtar used to trouble the best of batters with his sheer pace during his playing days.

However, Kaif was one of those batters who shared to charge down against Akhtar while batting. Kaif did the same while facing Akhtar in the Legends League Cricket game on Thursday and was seen trying to walk out against the former Pakistan pacer. Akhtar, who had previously stated he never liked Kaif's approach of walking out while batting against him, once again expressed his displeasure jokingly.

Post the conclusion of the game, Akhtar said he felt like punching Kaif after seeing him walk out against him once again. “He is walking towards me again. I just feel like punching him,” Akhtar said in a post-match interview as he burst into laughter.

“I have told him [Kaif] many-a-times on television to not walk on him but he did it again,” he added.

Virat Kohli decided to step down as India's Test captain last week sending shockwaves across the cricket fraternity. Kohli announced his decision on social media post India's 2-1 defeat in the recently-concluded three-match Test series against South Africa. Kohli was on his way to becoming one of the greatest Test captains of all time and was expected to continue leading the Indian team in the longest format.

However, Kohli decided to bring an end to his seven-year tenure as the captain of the Indian team in the longest format. Ever since his unexpected move, several former cricketers and experts have tried to decode the reason behind his decision and give their opinion on the matter.

Recently, former England captain Kevin Pietersen reacted to Kohli's shocking decision of quitting India's Test captaincy and explained why playing in bio-bubbles in the current times of COVID-19 could have been one of the biggest reasons behind Kohli's decision.

Pietersen said it is not easy for athletes around the world to play in bio-bubbles as it takes a severe toll on physical and mental health. "People who are critical of the modern-day sportsmen I think are foolish because these bio-bubbles are very hard to play in," Pietersen told PTI.

"It will be very unfair to be too harsh, to be critical. Because you have not looked at Virat Kohli. Kohli needs crowds, he gets going (from it), he is an entertainer," he added.

The former England captain further stated that he is not surprised by Kohli's decision of quitting the leadership role explaining that the 33-year-old might have felt the urge to step down from the top post to take some pressure off his back and focus on his batting.

"I'm actually not surprised that Virat wants just a little bit of a break from that extra pressure because it's damn difficult playing in these bubbles," Pietersen said.

"It's very difficult to judge all International sportsmen, be it premier league footballers or any sportsman around the world, playing in a pandemic. As a batter, I feed on the energy of players, and there are a lot of these players, be it in football, rugby or tennis," he added.

Kohli will not be leading India in any format going forward having left the T20I captaincy last year before being replaced as the ODI captain of the side by Rohit Sharma. He will continue to be a vital cog for the team across all three formats as a batter.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Thursday appointed Senior Counsel Advocate Terry Motau (SC) as chairperson of the disciplinary hearing into allegations of misconduct against Proteas men`s coach, Mark Boucher. It is proposed that the parties will meet with Advocate on January 26, 2022 to determine a timetable for the proceedings.

This follows December`s Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) report, which made tentative findings regarding allegations of discrimination and racism against various persons, including Boucher.

Specifically, during the SJN process, allegations of racism were levelled against Boucher by his former Proteas teammate, Paul Adams.

In releasing his report, the Ombudsman, Advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza SC, indicated that he was not in a position to make "definite findings" and recommended that a further process be undertaken in this regard.

In keeping with this approach, the Board was obligated to institute further formal enquiries into CSA employees, suppliers or contractors who are implicated by the SJN report, and this is the first of these processes.

"The Board remains mindful of its duty to treat allegations of racism or discrimination with the utmost seriousness and in a manner that ensures fairness and due process in terms of South Africa`s Constitution and labour legislation.

It is now up to the inquiry to determine to which extent the allegations are true and justify the need for further disciplinary steps," CSA Board Chairperson, Lawson Naidoo said in an official statement.

CSA also confirmed that a charge sheet, containing both the disciplinary charges against Boucher, as well as his rights, was provided to him on January 17. The upcoming inquiry will also consider concerns and allegations that arose following the resignation of former assistant coach, Enoch Nkwe.

While Boucher is being charged with gross misconduct, which could lead to his dismissal, CSA has emphasized that it is important that the independent inquiry first needs to test all allegations before any question of sanction can arise.

Advocate Terry Motau to preside over Mark Boucher's disciplinary hearing

Shikhar Dhawan believes that every lean patch in his career has made him "stronger" but it is his clarity of mind and calmness that has enabled him to ride over the rough times.

The oldest player in the Indian ODI set-up, there were lot of talks about Dhawan's poor form in domestic cricket but as it has been with the 36-year-old, he was back with a bang in his favourite blue shirt with a top-score of 79 off 84 balls, albeit in a losing cause in the first ODI against South Africa.

"I don't listen to the media or don't read newspapers or watch news, that way I don't take all that information," Dhawan said when asked how he keeps himself way from negativity.

For him, neither the bad patch has affected him for the first time nor is it going to be the last time but one needs to have the self belief in one's abilities.

"I have full confidence in myself that what my game is and I have clarity on that and I stay quite calm. And this is part of life, this happens in life, everyone's life has ups and downs, so it is nothing new and happening for the first time or for the last time in my career or my life, so it is alright, that only makes me stronger," said Dhawan.

Dhawan came into the series after a poor run of Vijay Hazare Trophy scores --- 0, 12, 14, 18, 12 -- in five List A games. But if one carefully looks at Dhawan's career, just when there have been calls to drop him, he has invariably responded with a big knock like he did in the first ODI, where he looked the best batter in his side.

"These talks (to drop him) always are there and I am used to it and I just know how to give my best and I always make sure that my preparation is quite good and process is good and then I leave it on God.
"...And I know that with my experience and my self-confidence, I'll do good and I am happy that I did well today," the flamboyant opener quipped.

His endeavour is to remain fit and healthy for the last part of his career.
"With my experience I'll keep scoring lots of runs and yeah till the time I keep playing cricket I stay healthy and happy and I score lot of runs," he said knowing well that he is reaching the business end of his career.

Not an easy wicket to play shots in middle overs

Dhawan's assessment of his team's 31-run defeat against South Africa was its struggle to keep the scoreboard ticking in the middle overs as the pitch got slower.

"We had a good start and I feel the wicket was slow, it was offering a bit of turn as well. So, when you are chasing (around) 300 runs, when the middle-order comes to bat, it is not easy to play shots.

"Our wickets fell in a heap and that had an impact on us as a batting unit," Dhawan reasoned.

Dhawan also praised the South African duo of Temba Bavuma (110 off 143) and Rassie van der Dussen (129 not out off 96) for their well crafted hundreds that laid the platform for a convincing win.

Asked what was the turning point of the game, he said, "I feel both the South African batsmen (batters) batted quite well and they took the innings quite deep."

Younger batters need to mould game as per demands

Dhawan believes that handling varied match situations comes with experience and the likes of Rishabh Pant, the two Iyers -- Shreyas and Venkatesh -- will understand better as they play more games.

"This (discussion) we have that play according to the situation and what the situation demands, keep the team ahead and an individual's game is important," he said.

"...But at the same time be practical, how can you mould your game, so that when a partnership is needed, then it is necessary, all those things and I feel these get refined with experience and time," noted the Delhi batter.

The southpaw was again asked how the middle order problems can be rectified, to which he said, "See our thought process as a unit or a team is that we are building our team for the 2023 World Cup, so there are going to be a few hiccups here and there, which is fine and we as a team analyze how we can get better."

Rohit's absence is a factor

Dhawan believes that once regular white ball captain Rohit Sharma is back in the mix, the team will be stronger and the middle-order will also play better cricket.

"Now Rohit (Sharma) isn't there, once he comes back, an experienced player will come in and the middle-order (Rahul will go down) will get stronger. So, the youngsters who are getting a chance, they will gain from this experience. We are looking at bigger picture," he said.

Sri Lanka tour of Australia: Lankans to play two T20Is in Sydney in revised series schedule

Record four-time champions and title contenders India stormed into the Super League quarterfinals of the U-19 World Cup after thrashing minnows Ireland by 174 runs in a league game here, in which they barely managed to field a playing XI.

India started their campaign on a winning note, beating South Africa by 45 runs on last Saturday and the win on Wednesday by such a huge margin is significant as the team fielded only available 11 players after six members of the side were forced into isolation after testing COVID positive.

Put into bat at the Brian Lara stadium, India first rode on Harnoor Singh's brisk 88 and his opening partner Angkrish Raghuvanshi's run-a-ball 79 to post a challenging 307 for five.

The Hrishikesh Kanitkar-coached side then bundled out the opposition for 133 in 39 overs to register a comfortable win.
Skipper Yash Dhull and his deputy Sheikh Rasheed were among those isolated after testing positive as Nishant Sindhu led the side.

Left-handed Harnoor and Angriksh stitched a 164-run stand at the top to ensure Indian bowlers had a decent total to defend.
Harnoor hit 12 fours in his 101-ball knock while Angriksh found 10 boundaries and two sixes.

Stand-in skipper Nishant Sindhu (36 off 34; 5x4s) and Raj Bawa (42 off 64; 2x4s; 1x6) then shared a 64-run stand for the third wicket.
As big hits dried up towards the end, Rajvardhan Hangargekar struck five sixes, including a hat-trick of maximums in the last over, in his fiery 17-ball 39-run unbeaten cameo that took India past the 300-run mark.

Harnoor, who has been in sparkling form, drove the ball elegantly. If it was pitched up on the middle and leg, the left-hander from Jalandhar flicked it exquisitely. The ones pitched up on the off-side were driven in the cover region as Harnoor ticked the board nicely.
In contrast, Angriksh chose to muscle the ball around. He cut, pulled and also drove in an aggressive manner as none of the Ireland bowlers could trouble the Indian openers.

Harnoor pulled left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys (1/69) over deep mid-wicket for a six to raise his half-century. It was the same bowler who trapped him leg before later. Angkrish was dismissed by spinner Jamie Forbes (1/38).

Chasing 308, Ireland were teetering at 17 for three after losing both openers Liam Doherty (7), David Vincent (8) and Jack Dickson (0) cheaply inside seven overs. Ireland never recovered from the early blows as right-arm medium pacer Garv Sangwan (2/23) sent back skipper Tim Tector (15) in the 15th over.

Wicket-keeper Joshua Cox (28 off 46 balls) tried to take the game deep, but it was too little and too late. Sangwan struck again, this time removing Cox in the 21st over as Ireland lost half of its side for 66.

Scott Macbeth (32) only delayed the inevitable before India bowled out Ireland for 133. Left-arm orthodox spinner Aneeshwar Gautam (2/11 ) and off-spinner Kaushal Tambe (2/8) cleaned up the lower middle order and tail-enders.

In a Group D match in Basseterre, Australia defeated Scotland by seven wickets.
Put into bat, Scotland rode on Charlie Tear (54), Thomas Mackintosh (54) and Oliver Davidson's (33) to post a respectable 236 for eight.

Australia sent Scotland in to bat first at the Conaree Cricket Centre, a decision that looked like it might backfire when Scotland's openers made a positive start with Tear and Davidson sharing 88 runs for the first wicket.

For Australia, Aiden Cahill (2/33) and William Salzmann (2/38) picked up two wickets apiece. Chasing, Australia started well, Teague Wyllie (101 not out), Cahill (72) and Campbell Kellaway (47) sparkled with the bat cantered home in 39.5 overs

ICC U-19 WC: India hit by Covid crisis as skipper Yash Dhull and five others test positive, miss Ireland tie

Star India opener Smriti Mandhana was on Wednesday named in the ICC T20 women's Team of the Year for her superlative show in the format in 2021 but no Indian made the men's side.

The stylish Southpaw, who is the Indian team's vice-captain in the format, was the country's highest scorer in the format in 2021 with 255 runs at an average of 31.87.

The 25-year-old scored two fifties in the nine matches she played and got her team off to rapid starts regularly, as evident up by her strike-rate of 131.44.

While Mandhana was the only Indian, several members of the English side feature in the team with Nat Scriver being named captain. The experienced England all-rounder produced many impactful performances throughout the year. Batting in the middle-order, Sciver scored a total of 153 runs, including one fifty, and she also picked up 10 wickets at an excellent average of 20.20.

Accompanying Mandhana at the top is England's Tammy Beaumont. The 30-year-old's reliable presence at the top of the order helped England off to steady starts regularly. She played nine matches and amassed 303 runs at an average of 33.66, including three fifties.

Danni Wyatt, wicketkeeper Amy Jones and spinner Sophie Ecclestone are the other English players in the side.
Gaby Lewis of Ireland, South African trio of Laura Wolvaardt, Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp and Zimbabwe's Loryn Phiri make up the rest of the playing XI.

Virat Kohli shocked the entire cricketing fraternity when he announced his decision to step down as India's Test captain. The decision came a day after India lost the three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the rainbow nation, despite having a 1-0 lead.

By quitting as the Test captain, the 33-year-old Kohli's overall captaincy tenure also came to an end. For the unversed, Kohli had already stepped down as the T20I captain, a decision which he revealed prior to the World Cup in the UAE last year, and was sacked as the ODI skipper as the national selectors wanted only one captain for the white-ball formats. Thus, in less than six months, Kohli's captaincy tenure has come to a halt altogether.

Former Indian pacer Atul Wassan shared his take on Kohli's latest decision to step down as the Test captain. Wassan feels the pressure was always there on Kohli following India's T20 World Cup debacle last year.

“Nothing shocks me. What shocked me was MS Dhoni quitting Test captaincy in the middle of the series in Australia. I think the way things have been going by the last couple of months, India’s debacle in the T20 WC, there was pressure on him,” Wassan has told ANI.

“He is not getting runs. At times, he is pointing fingers at other players and as a captain, he must do that to egg them on and I totally support him for that but the problem was that earlier he was leading by example but lately, the thing is his batsmanship has come down," he further added.

After Virat Kohli's surprising decision to step down as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team, the search for India's next Test skipper has begun. While limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma is favourite to take over as the leader of the red-ball team as well, not everyone is in favour of the move.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes Rohit is not an ideal successor to Kohli considering his excessive workload and fitness issues in recent times. Rohit has been dealing with injuries consistently over the last few years and had missed the recently-concluded Test series against South Africa due to a hamstring issue.

He is also set to miss the entire upcoming three-match ODI series against the Proteas with KL Rahul leading India in his absence. Gavaskar feels India need to look at someone young and fit who can be available for selection at all times.

"The problem with Rohit is that he has fitness issues. So you need a player who remains fit and is available for all matches. If you remember, Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews had the same issue with a hamstring. And with that, when you try to run fast or take a quick single, the injury resurfaces," Gavaskar said on Sports Tak as he explained why Rohit should not be made India's new Test skipper.

"If that is to happen, you may be forced to name someone else captain. So it's better to pick a player who instead has external injuries. But with Rohit, this cycle of picking up regular injuries is why I am doubtful about him. This is why I feel that only a player who features in all formats should be made captain," he added.

Rohit is not the only contender for the India Test captain job as the likes of KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant are also in the fray. Rahul, who had replaced injured Rohit as the vice-captain during the South Africa Test series, had led India in the second Test after Kohli missed the game due to a back spasm.

On Tuesday (January 18), during the pre-match press conference ahead of the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, Rahul was asked about potentially taking over as the new captain of the Test team. The star batter said it will be a huge honour to lead the national team in the longest format.

"It’ll be an honour if chosen to lead the team. It’s a very exciting prospect and I will try to lead to the best of my abilities. It will be a huge responsibility," said Rahul.

Sunil Gavaskar explains why India should not appoint Rohit Sharma as next Test captain after Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli took over as the Test captain with the national side ranked seventh and took them to plenty of highs during his tenure, from 2014-2021.

Adelaide to Johannesburg: India's five best Test wins under Virat Kohli's captaincy

Former India captain and legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev has backed Virat Kohli over his decision to step down as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team. Kohli on Saturday (January 15) confirmed that he will not be leading India in Tests going forward after the team's 2-1 defeat in the recently-concluded Test series against South Africa.

Kapil, who led India to its first-ever World Cup triumph in 1983, believes Kohli did the right thing by giving up captaincy as he appeared to be under pressure ever since leaving T20I captaincy last year. Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021 last year, Kohli had confirmed he will be stepping down as India's T20I captain post the showpiece event.

However, Kohli had expressed his desire to continue leading the team in both ODIs and Tests. In a controversial turn of events, he was removed as the ODI captain of the team in December last year with Rohit Sharma taking over as India's new limited-overs captain as a huge controversy erupted. The move also led to a public fallout between Kohli and the BCCI.

"I welcome Virat’s decision to quit the Test captaincy. He was going through a rough time ever since he gave up the T20 captaincy. He has looked tense in recent times, appeared to be under a lot of pressure. So giving up the captaincy was an option in order to play freely. He opted for that," Kapil told Mid-Day while sharing his views on Kohli's decision.

"He is a mature man. I am sure he must have thought hard before taking this important decision. Maybe, he wasn’t enjoying the captaincy. We have to support him and wish him luck," he added.

Virat Kohli should give up his ego: Kapil Dev

While Kapil backed Kohli's decision to step aside as the Test captain, he insisted the former Indian skipper should let go of his ego and play under a youngster for the larger good of the team. Citing his own example, Kapil said even he played under the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammad Azharuddin after leading India to a World Cup triumph in 1983.

"Even Sunil Gavaskar played under me. I played under K Srikkanth and Azharuddin. I had no ego. Virat will have to give up his ego and play under a young cricketer. This will help him and Indian cricket. Virat should guide the new captain, new players. We cannot lose Virat, the batsman…no way," Kapil concluded.

Virat Kohli will have to give up his ego and play under a youngster to help Indian team: Kapil Dev

Virat Kohli announced his decision to step down as India's Test captain on Saturday (January 15). It came as a surprising call as Kohli, one of the most successful captains of all time in the longest format, had been enjoying tremendous success as the leader of the side in the whites. However, there is more to the story than what meets the eye.

It is no secret that Kohli's relationship with the BCCI had stained after the former skipper delivered an explosive press conference ahead of the South Africa tour in December last year. In the press conference, Kohli openly countered some of the comments made by BCCI president Sourav Ganguly amid raging controversy over the board's decision to replace him with Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain.

Kohli had last year announced he will be leaving India's T20I captaincy while expressing his desire to continue leading the team in both Tests and ODIs. However, he was replaced a few months later with the selectors arguing that they wanted only one captain in limited-overs formats.

As per a report in PTI, Kohli's relations with the BCCI hit the lowest after his bold presser following his sacking as ODI captain and that it was his decision alone to give up Test captaincy. Kohli reportedly had no prior discussions with any of the BCCI top brass before making his decision official on Saturday.

As per the report, Kohli informed the biggies in the BCCI that he is 'tired' and doesn't want to lead the Test team anymore. The BCCI refrained from making any efforts to ask him to reconsider his decision and welcomed the move from the former India captain.

Rohit Sharma set to be the new Test captain?

As per PTI, Rohit Sharma is likely to be appointed as the new Test captain of the Indian team given that he is fit to return ahead of the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka. If all goes well, Rohit will become India's full-time captain across all formats having already been handed over the baton in ODIs and T20Is.

KL Rahul, who led India in Kohli's absence in the second Test against South Africa and acted as his deputy in the series against the Proteas, is likely to be the permanent vice-captain of the Test side going forward. It remains to be seen when and if BCCI will officially hand over Test captaincy to Rohit ahead of the Sri Lanka series.
