"It really is the stuff of dreams. Pretty crazy. To be at the end of a 5-match series with so many positives and 4-0, yeah really pumped. I am really happy as a captain. We have had some 15 players used in this series, some tough calls. Certainly feels like we are on to something big," said Cummins after the fifth Ashes Test concluded."

Cam Green with bat and ball has been outstanding. Scotty Boland was fantastic. And hope the old pros continue their good work. I am super excited about overseas Test cricket. One thing in the pandemic we haven`t done is not to play too much Test cricket," he added.

Further talking about the win, Cummins said: "So looking forward to adapting. Special thanks to ECB and Cricket Australia for putting this together in these times. Thanks for your (support) despite these tough times. We had an absolute ball."

With this win, Australia won the five-match Ashes 4-0. Australian skipper Pat Cummins also took three wickets in the second innings as the hosts completed a perfect bowling performance. Resuming the third and final session on Day 3 at 68/1, England batters Dawid Malan and Zak Crawley added 14 more runs to the total, but Australia came storming back as Cameron Green dismissed Malan (10) and Crawley (36) in quick succession, reducing England to 83/3 in the 23rd over.

Left-handed batter Ben Stokes (5) failed to leave a mark with the bat as he was scalped by Mitchell Starc in the 28th over. Nine runs later, Scott Boland went through Root`s (11) defence, and England found itself reeling at 101/5, still, 170 runs away from the target.

Australia thrash England by 146 runs in 5th Test, clinch Ashes 4-0

Four-time champions India dished out a clinical show to start their U-19 World Cup campaign on a winning note, thrashing South Africa by 45 runs here.

Put in to bat at the Providence stadium on Saturday, India rode on skipper Yash Dhull's responsible 82 to post a fighting 232 allout and then bundled out the opposition for 187, with left-arm spinner Vicky Ostwal (5/28) and pacer Raj Bawa (4/47) doing bulk of the damage.

Chasing 233, South Africa colts lost opener Ethan John Cunningham (0) in the first over as he was trapped in front by pacer Rajvardhan Hangargekar (1/38).

But Valintine Kitime (25) and Dewald Brevis (65), who idolizes AB de Villiers, then rallied the innings with a 58-run stand.
The duo played patiently and hit the loose balls away as South Africa cantered to 38 for 1 after 10 overs.
Kitime then took on left-arm medium pacer Ravi Kumar (0/30) in the 10th over, hitting him for a boundary and a six as South Africa amassed 10 runs off it.

Brevis and Kitime then hammered Bawa, amassing 17 runs of the 11th over. But Ostwal broke the stand after removing Kitime, who edged to stumper Dinesh Bana in the 12th over.

It soon became 83 for 3 as Ostwal struck again, this time dismissing GJ Maree (8), who was caught by Bana in the 21st over.
Thereafter, India did not allow any other South African batter to settle down. Bawa sent back a well-set Brevis, who was caught by rival skipper Dhull in the 36th over and that triggered a collapse for the rainbow nation.

Skipper George Van Heerden (36) tried to take the game deep but he was devoid of partners as Bawa and Ostwal wrecked havoc on the middle and lower order. The South African innings eventually folded in 45.4 overs.

Earlier, Dhull helped India recover from a poor start and his knock laid the cornerstone of India's fighting total.
The start of play was delayed by around 40 minutes due to rain and amid the prevailing conditions, South Africa decided to put India in to bat.

Left-arm pacer Aphiwe Mnyanda rocked the Indian top-order by trapping in-form opener Harnoor Singh (1) and his partner Angriksh Raghuvanshi (5) in front of the stumps.

Left-handed Harnoor, who was India's leading run getter in the Asia Cup and scored a century in the warm-up game against Australia here, fell to a ball that nipped back in. Raghuvanshi played around Mnyanda's inswinger and was plumb in front, leaving India for 11 for two.

With India in trouble, skipper Dhull and Shaik Rasheed (31) got together to resurrect the innings. They shared a 71-run stand before Rasheed missed a sweep shot off left-arm spinner Liam Alder to be adjudged LBW.

Rasheed, who was dropped on 17 at second slip off Andile Simelane, played some impressive strokes in his 54-ball knock, including an aerial pull and an on drive off pacer Matthew Boast to break the shackles.

Delhi batter Dhull then shared a 44-run stand with Nishant Sindhu (25) to take the innings forward. The skipper ended up with 11 fours and it took a brilliant direct hit from Simelane to dismiss him.

Kaushal Tamble added 35 valuable runs towards the end of the innings to take the team past 200.
Boast was quick to clean up the lower-order, removing Tambe and Rajvardhan Hangargekar in successive deliveries as India were all out in 46.5 overs.

The Dhull-led side, who have also won the Asia Cup, will now take on Ireland on Wednesday.

India beat South Africa by 45 runs to get off to a winning start in U-19 World Cup 2022

Virat Kohli left the entire cricket fraternity in shock on Saturday by announcing his decision to step down as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team. Kohli's decision came as a surprise to many, including his Indian teammate and limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma.

Rohit took to Twitter to reveal he was shocked by the decision while congratulating Kohli on a successful captaincy stint. Rohit had replaced Kohli as India's T20I captain last year after the latter decided to step down as the skipper in the shortest format. The Hitman was then appointed as India's ODI captain following Kohli's sacking.

Rohit took to social media to react to Kohli's decision to give up Test captaincy and said he was 'shocked' by his teammate's announcement. The Hitman went on to congratulate Kohli for a successful stint as the leader of the Test side and wished him the best for his future.

"Shocked!! But congratulations on a successful stint as Indian captain. All the best wishes for the future," Rohit wrote in an Instagram post.

Kohli's decision comes after India's 2-1 defeat in the recently-concluded three-match Test series against South Africa away from home. The former Indian skipper did not have a great series with the bat but was exceptional as the leader of the side as he inspired the team to a comprehensive 113-run win in the series-opener in Centurion.

'Shocked': Rohit Sharma reacts to Virat Kohli's surprise decision to quit India's Test captaincy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal on Saturday said that there is no doubt that Virat Kohli is the most successful Indian team captain and cricket in the country would continue to thrive under his mentorship and batting skills.

Dhumal`s remarks came as Kohli stepped down as India`s Test captain after leading the side for seven years. "Virat beyond doubt is the most successful Indian cricket team captain. We respect his decision and we wish him all the best for his future endeavours as a batter. I am sure under his leadership, mentorship and with his batting skills, Indian cricket would keep doing well," Dhumal told ANI.

Kohli`s decision to leave Test captaincy came a day after India lost the three-match Test series against South Africa on Friday. The 33-year-old`s biggest win in the longest format came during 2018-19 as India won its first Test series Down Under. Under his captaincy, India also reached the finals of the World Test Championship (WTC).

When asked whether series defeat against South Africa played a role in Virat`s decision, Dhumal said: "I do not think series loss against South Africa would have weighed that much in his decision. This would have been the first series win in South Africa. There is no Indian Test captain that has won a series in South Africa, so that could not be the case. I am sure he would have thought about his decision, he has been leading the side for seven years. He would have thought that this is the time to give leadership to someone else in the team. He will continue leading with his bat."

Replying on who can be the next Test captain, Dhumal said: "The decision to appoint a captain is taken by the selectors, not the office bearers. They would discuss among themselves on who will be the next Test captain."

Kohli holds the record for most Test appearances as India Test captain (68) and he also holds the record for most Test wins by an Indian captain (40). Only Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting, and Steve Waugh have won more matches than Kohli as captain in Test cricket.

Kohli had first led the side in Test cricket in 2014 against Australia. His last game as captain was the Cape Town Test in South Africa, which India lost by seven wickets. Filling the shoes of MS Dhoni was not going to be easy, but Kohli took leadership by storm, and quickly cemented himself as one of the best thinkers the country has seen in Test cricket.

The leadership also brought out the best in Kohli and it saw the batter registering seven double-centuries in the longest format of the game. Kohli also holds the record for scoring most Test centuries (20) as India captain.

Virat Kohli transformed India into a ruthless unit that performed admirably: BCCI Secretary Jay Shah

Virat Kohli on Saturday (January 15) left the entire cricket fraternity surprised as he announced that he will be stepping down as the Test captain of the Indian team. Kohli's decision to give up captaincy comes after India's 2-1 loss in the recently-concluded three-match Test series against South Africa.

Kohli had led the visitors in the first Test of the series where he inspired the team to a comprehensive win by 113 runs before missing the second game due to a back issue. Kohli returned to lead India in the series-deciding third and final Test but failed to help India clinch their maiden Test series win in South Africa as the hosts won the all-important game by seven wickets.

Kohli, who had given up India's T20I captaincy last year, had at the time expressed his desire to continue leading the team in both Tests and ODIs. However, he was replaced as the ODI captain ahead of the South Africa tour with Rohit Sharma taking over as India's new captain in limited-overs formats.

Kohli was later involved in a row with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over his sacking as ODI captain and had also contradicted BCCI president Sourav Ganguly's comments in a fiery press conference ahead of the South Africa tour.

Nonetheless, Kohli, who has always maintained he likes to give his 120 percent when playing for India, led India exceptionally well in his final series as Test captain. Kohli said he will be can't be 'dishonest' to his team and not give his 120 per cent while announcing his decision to give up Test captaincy.

Tributes started pouring in from all corners and fans, former cricketers and experts joined the bandwagon to congratulate Kohli on a magnificent stint as the Test captain of the Indian team. Kohli led India in 68 matches and won 40 games as captain to sign off as the most successful Indian skipper of all time.

Kohli took over Test captaincy full-time from MS Dhoni in the year 2014 and has since been instrumental in making India a powerhouse in the purest format. Kohli led India to some memorable wins both at home and overseas and was the first Indian captain to win a Test series in Australia.

Virat Kohli on Saturday (January 15) left the entire cricket fraternity surprised as he announced that he will be stepping down as the Test captain of the Indian team.

'Few have achieved what you did': Tributes pour in on Twitter as Virat Kohli gives up India's Test captaincy

Pat Cummins` four-wicket haul backed up by a gritty batting performance by Steve Smith helped Australia gain full control against England on Day 2 of the ongoing fifth Ashes Test here at the Blundstone Arena, Hobart on Saturday.

At stumps, Australia`s score read 37/3 -- with the hosts leading by 152 runs. Smith (17*) and Scott Boland (3*) are currently at the crease.

After gaining a lead of 115, Australia got off to a dreadful start as the hosts lost David Warner (0) on the third ball of the second innings. The left-handed batter was sent back to the pavilion by his arch-nemesis Stuart Broad. Soon after, Marnus Labuschagne (5) was dismissed by Chris Woakes, reducing Australia to 5/2 in the fourth over.

On the cusp of stumps on Day 2, Mark Wood got the better of Usman Khawaja (11), and in the end, Smith and Boland ensured that Australia does not lose more wickets before stumps.

Earlier, resuming the third and final session at 124/6, Sam Billings and Chris Woakes added 28 more runs to the total before Cameron Green dismissed Billings (29) in the 42nd over of the innings. Mark Wood then joined Woakes in the middle and the duo scored runs at a brisk pace.

Both Wood and Woakes put on 30 runs for the eighth wicket, but the partnership was broken by Mitchell Starc as the left-arm pacer had Woakes (36) caught down the leg-side at the hands of the wicketkeeper Alex Carey, reducing England to 182/8.

In the very same over, Starc bowled Stuart Broad (0) and England was on the cusp of being bowled out. In the end, the Three Lions were bowled out for 188, handing Australia a lead of 115 runs. Pat Cummins returned with four wickets for the hosts.

Brief Scores: Australia 303 and 37/3 (Steve Smith 17*, Usman Khawaja 11; Stuart Broad 1-9); England 188 all out (Chris Woakes 36, Joe Root 34; Pat Cummins 4-45).

Rain played spollsport as the third session of Day 1 of the fifth Ashes Test between Australia and England ended abruptly, here at Hobart on Friday. At the Stumps on Day 1, Australia's score read 241/6 with Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc currently unbeaten at the crease.

Resuming the third session at 215/5, Mark Wood dismissed Cameron Green on 74 runs as he got caught out by Zak Crawley, with the team's total at 236/6. Carey was then joined by Starc who took the team's total to 241/6 before the rain ended the play on Day 1.

Earlier before the tea break, Travis Head scored his fourth Test hundred but fell on the next ball. For Green, it was back to-back fifties as Australia went past the 200-run mark in the second session.

After opting to bowl first, England's seamers made the most of the new pink ball, dismissing David Warner and Steve Smith for ducks, plus SCG twin centurion Usman Khawaja for just six.

At 3-12, the home side were reeling, as Ollie Robinson (two wickets) and Stuart Broad (one) did the damage with the ball. However, Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head opted to fight fire with fire, racing to 3-79 off just 21 overs on the stroke of dinner.

But Broad bowled Marnus round his legs to give England their fourth wicket of the session, seemingly justifying the call from Root to bowl first.

Keegan Petersen scored a superb 82 as South Africa completed a seven-wicket victory in the third test and a 2-1 series win over world number one India on a spiteful Newlands pitch having chased down their challenging target of 212 on Friday.

It is just the fourth time in 133 years that a team has scored more than 200 in Cape Town to win, and follows on from South Africa’s epic seven-wicket victory in Johannesburg in the second test when they needed 240 in the fourth innings.

South Africa lost Aiden Markram and then captain Dean Elgar as they reached 101/2 at stumps on day three of third Test at the Newlands Cricket Ground on Thursday. For the hosts, the impressive Keegan Petersen is unbeaten at 48 as South Africa still need 111 runs to win the match.

South Africa began well with Markram getting some streaky boundaries through the off-side off Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah. Amid high chatter from the Indian team, Shami extracted the outer edge twice from Markram. The first one went for a boundary between gully and backward point. But on the very next ball, Markram again went for the loose pull and outside edge flew to KL Rahul at third slip.

Keegan Petersen got off the mark with a well-timed off-drive through mid-off off Bumrah. He and Elgar oozed confidence while getting boundaries. Ravichandran Ashwin had Elgar trapped lbw on his third over of the day. Elgar reviewed and ball-tracking showed that the ball would go over the stumps, surprising the Indian team.

Post this, Petersen played some great-quality shots, cutting Shardul Thakur through off-side, bringing his delightful backfoot punch off Bumrah and reverse sweeping and cutting Ashwin with ease. He then picked a boundary flying past diving Pant off Shami followed by a drive through off-side to take South Africa past 100. Bumrah broke the 78-run partnership as Elgar was strangled down leg and Pant dived to his right to take the catch at the stroke of stumps.

International Cricket Council (ICC) CEO Geoff Allardice, on Thursday said that he has received no communication from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja regarding the four-nation T20I series, involving both India and Pakistan.

Raja on Tuesday had said that he would make a proposal to the ICC about holding a four nations T20I series comprising both India and Pakistan to be held every year.

He voiced his opinion that he wants to see India, Pakistan, Australia, and England square off in the T20I series every year. The PCB chief also said that if this series indeed goes ahead, then the profits would be shared on a percentage basis with all ICC members.

"We have not had any correspondence or communication with Ramiz Raja regarding any of the ideas. Till we get more detail on what he is thinking, it is hard to comment. At this stage, we have had no communication with Ramiz Raja regarding his idea," said Allardice during a virtual interaction with select media on Thursday.

Allardice also said that the management of the bio-secure bubble would be a real challenge at the upcoming U19 World Cup, adding that the bio-bubble in place would not be a strict one as the apex cricketing body wants players to enjoy the experience of playing in a World Cup.

The U19 World Cup will get underway in Guyana with hosts West Indies taking on Australia in the tournament opener on Friday, and a concurrent second game between Sri Lanka and Scotland will also take place in Georgetown.

"It`s a balance between the risk of catching and passing on the virus versus the freedom that young people are going to be looking for and allow them to enjoy the experience of being involved in an Under-19 World Cup as well. I think the management of that environment over the next few weeks is probably the challenge and being able to react to whatever gets thrown our way," said Allardice.

When asked about the bio-bubble for the World Cup, Allardice said: "We are following a similar model to the Men`s T20 World Cup in the way that we manage the type of accommodation that we are using and the COVID-19 testing frequency. We did learn from the experience in the UAE and we have had other events which have been multi-teams competitions."

England's Test captain Joe Root has revealed that he is considering entering the upcoming IPL auction, four years after going unsold in the auction for the lucrative T20 league.

Considered one of the modern greats of the game, Root is yet to play in the IPL after going unsold in the 2018 auction. The 31-year-old batter, however, said he would look to play in the tournament only if it does not distract him from his Test career.

"Time is ticking but I have a lot to weigh up," Root said, according to ESPNcricinfo.Com.

"Will it have a negative impact on me playing Test cricket? If I don't think so then I will put myself in the auction. But I will never do anything that will detract from playing Test cricket for England. It's so important to make sure that is the priority for me and other players as well."

Root had expressed his desire to play in the IPL earlier too even though he had decided against entering the auction. The mega-auction ahead of the upcoming season is scheduled to be held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru.

On Wednesday, Australian pacer Mitchell Starc said he was also contemplating making a comeback to the IPL after a lengthy hiatus despite a hectic schedule that includes touring the subcontinent and the T20 World Cup title defence at home later this year.

Starc, who last played in the IPL in 2015, said he hasn't made the decision yet but entering his name for the league's mega auction, the nominations for which close on Friday, is "certainly on the table."

"I haven't been for six years or so. Obviously, with a heavy weighting towards T20s over the last period of time and the World Cup coming up later this year, that's one to take into consideration as well. There's a bit going on with scheduling and what-not to get our heads around, certainly for us multi-format players," he further added.

Australia has a tight schedule in the first half of the year 2022; including three ODIs and a T20 to be played with New Zealand before five T20Is against Sri Lanka at home. Thereafter, they travel to Pakistan for a multi-format tour, then to New Zealand for yet another white-ball tour before the players head to the IPL. Despite the busy schedule, Starc said he was very much thinking of the IPL.

“The schedules are quite jam-packed, when you throw in all the tours, obviously we've got a couple of white-ball series post the Ashes before that Pakistan tour. Then you take in consideration the IPL, then a Sri Lankan tour after that, so it's a massive six months of cricket for everyone, but certainly for those multi-format players," he said.

Melbourne Stars pacer Haris Rauf pulled off a unique celebration after taking a wicket in his side's clash against Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League on Tuesday. Rauf, who is known for his quirky celebrations after taking a wicket, sent a message with his unique COVID-19-related celebration this time around.

As COVID-19 wreaks havoc across the globe once again, COVID-appropriate behaviour has become the new norm in the world. While social distancing is crucial, healthy habits like wearing a mask and washing hands regularly with soap are among the guidelines that have been laid out by medical experts to stay protected from the contagious virus.

Rauf sent a message to cricket fans around the world by gesturing washing his hands and wearing a mask after taking a wicket. The incident happened in the third over of the Perth Scorchers' innings when opener Kurtis Patterson was dismissed by the Pakistan pacer after getting caught behind.

Rauf gestured pouring out hand wash and washing his hands before taking out a mask from his pocket and wearing it in what was a unique way of celebrating the wicket. His teammate Beau Webster was also left amused by the celebration as he laughed and clapped while appreciating Rauf.

South Africa skipper Dean Elgar on Monday termed India captain Virat Kohli as a `world class player` who brings a different dynamic to the game. India and South Africa will lock horns in the third and final Test, beginning Tuesday at Cape Town.

``Virat brings a different dynamic to the game. I don`t think I missed him. But I think potentially his team missed him, no doubt just from a captaincy point of view and maybe from a strategy point of view.

He is a world class player and very experienced within their squad," said Dean Elgar during a virtual press conference. "His name speaks for itself and it`s one of the more respected cricketers around so I wouldn`t say I missed him... But it doesn`t matter who are playing against.

We as a team, we need to focus on us," he added. Talking about the fitness of the players, the skipper said that the players are in good shape and there will not be any major change in the Playing XI in the final Test.

``I don`t think there`s any hiccups with regards to fitness of players, obviously, there`s always niggles when you play in a series, especially Test cricket pushes your body to the limit. And I mean if you`re not a little bit sore, and if you`re not a little bit bruised, then the bowlers feet are not sore then obviously they`re not working hard enough,`` said the Proteas skipper.

"With regards to the team, with everyone fit, I don`t see making too many hussle changes and trying to be as stable as we can. I think competing in a big day series we need to be stable as much as possible with our Playing XI," he added.

Elgar further praised pacer Kagiso Rabada, who will be playing his 50th Test match on Tuesday. ``Playing 50 Tests for your country is massive. When he started he was extremely raw and he had express pace and I think he`s come of age in that period of time.

Virat Kohli brings different dynamic to game, says Dean Elgar ahead of SA vs Ind 3rd Test match

India will be aiming to register a historic maiden Test series win in South Africa when they lock horns with the Proteas in the third and final Test of the three-match series in Cape Town. The series is currently locked at 1-1 with the decider set to get underway from Tuesday (November 11).

India have so far managed only four Test wins in South Africa and are yet to win their first-ever Test series in the Rainbow nation. However, they have a strong chance of doing the unthinkable this time around as they stand just one win away from clinching the ongoing series against the Proteas.

India won the series-opener against South Africa comprehensively by 113 runs before slipping to a seven-wicket defeat in the second Test against the hosts in the absence of captain Virat Kohli, who missed the game due to a back spasm. With Kohli back in the playing XI, India have been handed a massive boost ahead of the series decider.

India's Test record in Cape Town:

India have so far played a total of five Test matches at the Newlands in Cape Town and have remained winless. They have managed three draws while South Africa have churned out three wins in the five encounters played between the two sides at the iconic venue. Here is a look at India's performances in Test matches at Cape Town.

1992

India and South Africa met for the first time in Cape Town in the year 1992 when Mohammad Azharuddin was leading India. South Africa posted 360 runs on the board in their first innings before bundling out India for 276. In their second innings, the hosts declared on 130/6 while India could only manage 29/1 as the game ended in a draw.

1997

In the second Test meeting between India and South Africa in Cape Town in 1997, the hosts got the better of the visitors by a massive margin of 282 runs. Riding on centuries from Gary Kirsten and Brian Mcmillan the Proteas posted a huge total of 529 runs in their first innings which saw them walk away with the game comfortably.

2007

India's Test record in Cape Town: India have so far played a total of five Test matches at the Newlands in Cape Town and have remained winless. SAvsIND: When and where to watch South Africa vs India 3rd Test match - IST time and streaming details

England`s Jos Buttler will miss the fifth and final Ashes test against Australia in Hobart with a finger injury, skipper Joe Root said after the visitors eked out a thrilling draw in the fourth match in Sydney on Sunday.

England`s bruised middle order and their obdurate tailenders combined to bat out the final day of the test amid nerve-racking drama to deny Australia their fourth consecutive victory in the series.

All-rounder Ben Stokes who has a side strain and centurion Jonny Bairstow who injured a thumb during the match are also doubtful for the Hobart test beginning on Friday.

"We`ll have to make some further assessments but Jos Buttler`s going to have to fly home and won`t take any further part on the tour," Root told a news conference.

"That`s quite a serious injury and for him to front up as he did from the moment he took that knock shows how much he cares, shows how much it means for him to play in this team and play for England."

The team later said in a statement that both Stokes, who managed two half-centuries in the match despite the pain, and Bairstow, whose 113 is the only hundred by an Englishman so far in the series, would travel to Hobart where they would be assessed.
England have added Sam Billings to their squad and the 30-year-old is currently isolating in the team hotel.

Head coach Chris Silverwood and bowling Coach Jon Lewis will also reunite with the squad having both recovered from COVID-19.
Root said he felt an "overwhelming" sense of pride at the result that followed heavy losses in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne.
"I think a lot of the guys could see a number of players hurting physically, and still putting in a huge amount and in many ways, it lifted the rest of the group," said Root.

"It`s a small step forward...to be able to sit here having drawn (the match) was always going to take a good performance and I`m really proud of the way the guys dug in, and managed to do that."

"Clearly a lot of emotion knocking around, a big sense of pride. It`s an overwhelming feeling at the moment..."

Ashes: Injury forces Jos Buttler to fly home, Joe Root proud of team's character in SCG draw

England`s walking wounded defied Australia`s pace attack to bat out a dramatic final day of the fourth Ashes test for a morale-boosting draw at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.

The hosts still hold an unassailable 3-0 lead heading into the final day-night test in Hobart but England restored some pride having shown the fight captain Joe Root had asked of them.

Stuart Broad and James Anderson steered England to 270 for nine at the close of play in the evening gloom, well short of the victory target of 388 but a huge turnaround after heavy losses in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne.

Australia skipper Pat Cummins was unable to use pace in a tense final three overs because of the fading light and his predecessor Steve Smith took his first test wicket in almost six years to dismiss Jack Leach.

That left Australia needing one wicket in the last two overs but Broad and Anderson, despite the fielders crowding around them, stood firm to frustrate the home side.

"It`s been a difficult tour, but we stood up and found a way to get a result out of this game," said Root.
"We wanted to put pride back into the badge. The way we went about it in this game, we did that. We know there`s a long way to go. It would be nice to front up again next week and go one better."

Opener Zak Crawley had led off the rearguard with an assured 77 and Ben Stokes, who famously steered England to a dramatic victory at Headingley in the last Ashes series, chipped in with 60 runs despite being clearly hampered by a side injury.
First innings centurion Jonny Bairstow, playing with a thumb injury, contributed 41 before becoming Scott Boland`s 14th victim in the paceman`s second test.

Jos Buttler, also nursing a finger injury which has ruled him out of the fifth test, scored 11 runs from 38 balls before becoming one of two batsmen to depart in three deliveries from Cummins with the new ball.

'Dad I will be there till the end': What Dean Elgar told his father before the final day of 2nd Test vs India

India opener Mayank Agarwal was on Saturday nominated for the ICC Player of the Month award for December following his stellar performance in the Test series against New Zealand and South Africa.

Besides Agarwal, New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel and Australian pacer Mitchell Starc were also short-listed for the award.
With regular openers Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul all missing games at some point last month, Agarwal grabbed the opportunity with both hands against New Zealand and South Africa.

In two matches, he scored 276 runs at an average of 69.00, which included two fifties and a century. Agarwal was the architect of the win in Mumbai against New Zealand with a Player of the Match-winning performance of 150 and 62 in the two innings. He also played a crucial role in India breaking the Centurion hoodoo for the very first time.

Batting first in overcast conditions, KL Rahul and Agarwal set the platform with a brilliant opening partnership of 117. During the stand, he was tested by the fiery Proteas pace attack but came out shining with a brilliant 60. India posted 327 in the first innings, which eventually proved to be the difference between the two sides.

India-born kiwi spinner Ajaz Patel's name was immortalised in cricketing history in December, when he picked up 10 wickets in an innings against India, becoming the third player in Tests to achieve the feat after Jim Laker and Anil Kumble. The left-arm spinner played just one Test in the month, where he picked up 14 wickets at an average of 16.07. He picked up all 10 wickets in the first innings but was disappointed by the Kiwi batters who were bundled out for 62.

In the second innings, he picked up four wickets, including that of Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara. He finished with figures of 14/225, the best bowling figures in a Test match in 2021. Starc also had standout performances both with the bat and ball in hand as Australia retained the Ashes with two games to spare.
In three games last month, he picked up 14 wickets at an average of 19.64 and was more than handy with the bat, scoring 117 runs at an average of 58.50.

He set the tone for the whole series by dismissing Rory Burns with the first ball of the first Test. While batting, he kept Travis Head company with an innings of 35 and added 85 crucial runs for the eighth wicket. In the second Test in Adelaide, Starc snapped six wickets and scored 58. This included a brilliant four-wicket haul in the first innings that helped reduce England to 236, giving Australia a massive lead of 237 runs.

Pant was dismissed for a duck in the second innings as India lost the Test match by seven wickets after setting up a target of 240 runs for the hosts in their second innings.

Pant had walked into bat at no.6 after the quick departures of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara with India at 163/4. Pant was expected to steady the ship for the visitors and build a partnership with Hanuma Vihari, who was out in the middle. However, the left-handed ended up getting caught by Kyle Verreynne on the third delivery he faced.

Pant tried to step out and smash Rabada but ended up edging one to the South African wicket-keeper, who made no mistakes with the catch. His approach left many baffled, including former India all-rounder and 1983 World Cup-winner Madan Lal, who believes the young wicket-keeper should be rested.

Pant has been playing continuous cricket for India since the IPL 2020 and has been a regular across formats for the team. Lal wants India to give him a break and give senior keeper Wriddhiman Saha a chance in the series-deciding third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

“He should be given a break. And you have someone like Wriddhiman Saha. He is a sensible batsman. He is a very good wicketkeeper. But Pant has to decide how he wants to bat in Test cricket. If there is some doubt in his mind, it is better to give him a break," Lal said during an interaction on Aaj Tak.

"He is a match-winning player, but you cannot bat like this. You have to bat for the team and not for yourself,” the former all-rounder added.
