Senior pacer Mohammed Shami was being touted by many to make a cut in India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 after the Indian pace attack failed to impress in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022. However, there were no major surprises as the selectors recalled fit-again Jasprit Bumrah and Harsha Patel back into the squad while putting Shami on the standby list.

Shami has not been in the mix of things for India as far as T20Is are concerned since the T20 World Cup last year. However, uninspiring performances from the Indian pacers during the Asia Cup 2022 led to debate over Shami's potential comeback in the shortest format of the game.

While he has not been named in India's 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2022, Shami is in the reserves and will feature in the upcoming T20I series against Australia and South Africa at home. The senior pacer has a chance to impress in the two series and can be included in the T20 World Cup squad if he does exceptionally well.

A member of the BCCI selection panel recently hinted that Shami still has a chance of being included in the squad if he can perform well and there is an injury or a slip-up in the performances of any of the selected pacers. The selector said Shami could have been considered had Bumrah and Harshal not recovered from their respective injuries.

"Someone who hasn’t played for 10 months in T20Is cannot be selected directly for the T20 World Cup. There was a process that was followed. Harshal Patel made the most during his absence. And it cannot be overlooked. Had Harshal or Jasprit not recovered, Shami could have been selected. He too has to follow the process," a member of the selection committee told InsideSport.

Shami is also reportedly above Deepak Chahar in the pecking order for selection in the main squad in case of an injury to a fast bowler ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 which gets underway next month.

Virat Kohli returned to international cricket in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, post the England tour, and announced his comeback in style. He ended the tournament with 276 runs -- second-most overall -- including two half-centuries and a hundred. Thus, the 33-year-old ended his international century drought, since late 2019, by finally reaching his 71st ton at the highest level.

With Kohli returning to form, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team management will breathe a sigh of relief despite their dismal run at the Asia Cup, eventually won by Sri Lanka. Going ahead into the T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia from October-November, the Indian star batter will now look to carry on in similar stead in the home series versus Australia and South Africa and go big in the forthcoming mega event Down Under. Prior to the T20 WC, where India will look to end their ICC-title drought, Pakistan's former pacer Shoaib Akhtar has made a bold prediction.

"Kohli might just take retirement after the T20 World Cup. He may do that to extend his longevity in the other formats. If I was him, I would have looked at the larger picture and taken a call," Akhtar said in a LIVE session hosted by India.com.

Seeing Kohli's blitz in the continental tournament, held in the UAE, Shahid Afridi recently gave retirement advice to the former Indian captain. "The way Virat has played, the start that he had to his career, there was a struggle initially before he made a name for himself. He is a champion and I believe there comes a stage when you are headed towards retirement. But in that scenario, the aim should be to go out on a high," Afridi told Samaa TV.

"It shouldn't reach a stage where you are dropped from the team and instead when you are at your peak. It seldom happens though. Very few players, especially cricketers from Asia Cup make that decision, but I feel when Virat does it, he will do it style and probably in the same manner in which he started his career," the former Pakistan captain and all-rounder concluded.

Seeing Kohli's fitness, it is highly unlikely that he will retire post the T20 WC. But given India have plenty of young batters waiting in the wings, he might just sideline himself from the format with the ODI World Cup to be played in India in late 2023.

Babar Azam has done well as Pakistan's captain across formats. Under him, Babar-led Men in Green reached the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup and the Asia Cup final. However, a big title still eludes skipper Babar. He will be hoping to turn things for his national side by taking them to the coveted title in the forthcoming 2022 T20 WC, to be held in Australia from October-November.

After Pakistan's Asia Cup final loss to Sri Lanka by 23 runs, in Dubai, many slammed Babar for not using his bowlers smartly in the summit clash. His own failures with the bat -- where he amassed only 68 runs in five outings in the continental tournament -- hasn't helped his cause. Now, veteran keeper-batter Kamran Akmal has revealed that he had advised Babar to not take up Pakistan captaincy.

Akmal revealed on a YouTube show, as quoted by Hindustan times, "During a T20I in Faisalabad when Babar was walking out for the toss, I got to know that he is being made captain. That is when I told him... 'I don't think now is the right time for you to become captain. Give your best performances in the next 2-3 years. The batting line-up is depended on you. Reach Virat Kohli's level first, Steve Smith's level. By then, you would have scored 35-40 centuries and enjoy captaincy. The moment Sarfaraz leaves, you will be next in line. But now is the right time. I told him back in the day but it was his decision. Those who were close to him, must have spoken to him and advised him to take up captaincy."

Babar was appointed as Pakistan's T20I in late 2019 before being given the post in ODIs early next year. Later in the same year, he was promoted as the full-time captain. Kamran, however, added that he believes that Pakistan cricket will move backwards if they remove Babar from the captaincy post.

"I had also told him to only concentrate on his batting. He was scoring runs and would have continued to do so. The flow was beautiful. People enjoyed watching him bat. With captaincy, there will be pressure, which will affect his batting, his approach. And somewhere, that is visible now. But at the same time removing him as captain right now would be a big blunder on the part of the team management. Pakistan cricket will go back," added the veteran.

Team India is now gearing up for the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, set to be held in Australia from October-November. The main squad, comprising 15 players, were announced on Monday evening (September 16) and the ardent Indian cricket fans are backing Rohit Sharma-led India to return with the trophy this time around.

India haven't won an ICC title since 2013 and in the last edition of the T20 WC, held last year in the UAE, saw the Virat Kohli-led Men in Blue bow out of the marquee tournament in the Super 12 round. India's main concern has been the struggle to finalise a settled XI, causing their downfall in recent multi-nation tournaments (including the Asia Cup). However, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has backed India to win the trophy if luck favours them.

"I believe that this team, with a bit of luck that every team needs, can bring home the trophy," Gavaskar told The Indian Express. "Once the team is selected, then it’s our India team and we all have to back it. We shouldn’t question selections and omissions as it can demoralise some of the players," the batting great added.

India, after a dismal Asia Cup campaign, will now host Australia and South Africa in white-ball assignments at home before boarding the flight to Australia. Thus, they will use their remaining T20I fixtures to find a balanced XI and then go all-out in the showpiece event Down Under. They are placed in Pool B with Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa with two more teams joining from the qualifiers.

'With bit of...' - Sunil Gavaskar mentions the factor which can help India win T20 World Cup

Virat Kohli returned to form with a terrific run in the Asia Cup, where Rohit Sharma-led Team India fell flat in the Super Four round. Kohli came into the continental tournament, held in the UAE, after a break from international cricket -- post the England tour -- and was among runs from the word go. He ended the Asia Cup with scores of 35 (34), 59* (44), 60 (44), 0 (4), 122* (61) and will now like to go all-out in the forthcoming T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia from October-November.

Ahead of the upcoming ICC event Down Under, former Indian stumper Parthiv Patel opined on Kohli's batting slot. Patel feels Virat is best suited as an opener, with Rohit Sharma, and said on Cricbuzz, "It's very clear. If I was clear that Virat Kohli should be opening in Asia Cup, he should be opening in World Cup as well. It just gives the right balance."

"They (Kohli and Rohit Sharma) are two different kind of players. One goes very aggressive (from the beginning), can hit boundaries, and there is Kohli who finds gaps and creates boundaries. If Rohit and Kohli can play till the first six overs I have no doubt that even in Australian conditions more often than not they will get India to around fifty," Parthiv pointed out.

"That is a good score without losing a wicket. Kohli is probably India's best batter suited for those conditions. So why not. You have got your two best batters playing the first six overs. If you have wickets in hand, that has always been the recipe for success for any T20 team," the former cricketer added.

It will be interesting to see if the Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team management goes for a change in the opening pair in their remaining T20Is in the run-up to the T20 WC in Australia. Before leaving for Australia, India will host the defending champions Aussies and South Africa in three T20Is each (also playing three ODIs versus the Proteas) and will be desperate to finalise a settled XI.

'It gives the right balance' - Former Indian stumper suggests Virat Kohli's batting slot for T20 World Cup

On Monday (September 12), BCCI announced India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition. The forthcoming ICC event will be held in Australia from October-November and Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will aim to end their ICC-title drought, since 2013. For a long time, India have been struggling with their team combination and, hence, they will like to finalise their playing XI at the earliest in their remaining T20I matches.

Due to the team combination struggles, India have paid the price in ICC events. In the last edition of the T20 WC, held in the UAE in late 2021, the Virat Kohlil-led Indian side failed to get going in the Super 12 round and bowed out of the semi-finals race. In the recently-held Asia Cup 2022 edition, Rohit & Co. once again dominated the group stage but fell flat in their opening two games in Super Four round to not qualify for the final. Thus, Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led team management will have to play a settled XI

"My playing 11, wherever you play, whether you’re playing in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney or Perth, my playing 11 is always fixed. For the first game – KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli - number three, Suryakumar Yadav - number four, number five is Hardik Pandya, number six is Rishabh Pant, number seven - Ashwin, eight - Chahal, 9, 10, 11 – in this particular team will be Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and of course Harshal Patel," Srikkanth said on Star Sports show Follow The Blues.

'Whether you’re playing...' - Kris Srikkanth picks Team India's best XI for T20 World Cup in Australia

BCCI named India's 15-man squad, along with a 4-man reserve list, for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition, to be held in Australia from October-November. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian squad saw the return of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel as the two pacers recovered from their respective injuries and made the final cut.

In the reserve list, the likes of Md Shami, Ravi Bishnoi, Deepak Chahar and Shreyas Iyer were roped in. The main squad primarily features the players who featured in the Asia Cup -- where India failed to make it to the final -- and, thus, many former cricketers and experts of the game have shared their take on India's line-up.

Aakash Chopra, former Indian opener-turned-commentator-cum-expert, also joined the bandwagon and feels Yuzvendra Chahal is the only 'legit wicket-taking option'.

"You have picked three spinners - an offspinner, a legspinner and a left-arm spinner. So you have picked different-different options but Yuzi Chahal is the only legit wicket-taking option in T20 cricket," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Chopra further opined, "The others are defensive options - make no mistake, that is the truth. You can see the numbers for the last 12 months, IPL included for both of them - Axar and Ravichandran Ashwin. Being disappointed with Bishnoi's omission from the main squad, he stated, "Ravi Bishnoi was a tempting option available to you. You are not thinking about Kuldeep at all, which is slightly disappointing, but he could also have been a wicket-taking option. But you didn't think about either of them."

"It will be very interesting whether you will be able to play two out of the three spinners in the XI. Will you be able to play either Axar or Ravi (Ashwin) along with Yuzi Chahal - that’s going to be a big one," Chopra added.

Former India cricketer Amit Mishra aimed a brutal dig at Shahid Afridi after the ex-Pakistan all-rounder shared some retirement advice for Indian superstar Virat Kohli. Talking about Kohli's career, Afridi said the Indian batting maestro should retire on a high whenever he decides to walk away from the game, and that it should not come to a stage where he is getting dropped from the team.

Reacting to Afridi's comments about Kohli, Mishra came up with a sharp response on Twitter. The former India spinner took a dig at Afridi, who retired five times in his international career only to return back four times. Urging him to spare Kohli, Mishra said some people retire only once.

"Dear Afridi, some people retire only once so please spare Virat Kohli from all this," he wrote in a tweet.

Speaking during a TV show in Pakistan, Afridi came up with some retirement advice for Kohli, who has a number of years left at the top level and has been going strong across all formats for India. Afridi, who backtracked from his retirement four times, said Kohli should look at quitting the game while he is still at his peak and not wait to be dropped from the team.

"The way Virat has played, the start that he had to his career, he had overcome struggles and work hard before he made a name for himself. He is a champion and I believe there comes a stage when you are headed towards retirement. At such a stage, the aim should be to go out on a high," Afridi said on Pakistan's Samaa TV.

"It shouldn't reach a stage where you are dropped from the team. Instead, retirement should be announced when you are at your peak. It seldom happens though. Very few players, especially cricketers from the Asian region make that decision, but I feel when Virat does it, he will do in a good way and probably end his career in style much like the way he began his career," he added.

Kohli was under massive pressure to deliver and bounce back to form amid his lean patch ahead of the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022. However, the former Indian skipper rediscovered his form and looked in great touch throughout the tournament as he notched up back-to-back fifties before smashing his much-awaited 71st international century.

Sanju Samson's snub from India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad has left many disappointed. The fans were hoping the selectors would give a chance to the talented wicket-keeper batter, who has the ability to play big shots and could have been an 'x-factor' for India in the tournament down under.

However, Samson, who has not been a regular feature for India in T20Is over the last few months, was left out as the selectors went with Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant as the two wicket-keeper batters in the team. Samson's name was reportedly not even discussed in the selection meeting and he is not even part of the standby players for the tournament.

His non-selection has, however, left many baffled and fans have slammed the selectors over the lack of chances for the wicket-keeper batter. Former India chief selector MSK Prasad was recently asked for his take on the selectors' call to not pick Samson and he called it the right decision.

Prasad argued there is no one in the 15-man squad who could have been potentially replaced by Samson. He also explained why Samson didn't even make it to the standby list and said if he was in the team management's plans, he would have played in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022.

“The question is, Sanju Samson, in place of who?" Prasad told The Indian Express.

“Deepak Hooda gives you that extra bowling option. He can bat anywhere like Sanju, and Shreyas has done well in the home series against Sri Lanka and then in the West Indies. If the team management wanted to pick Sanju, they would have given him an opportunity in the Asia Cup or the upcoming home series against South Africa and Australia," he added.

Samson has so far played only six T20Is for India this year but has scored an impressive 179 runs at an average of 44.75. The wicket-keeper batter, who made his T20I debut for India in 2015, has been around for a while now but has not quite managed to live up to his full potential.

The Australian men's cricket team has unveiled their playing kit for the T20 World Cup scheduled to start on October 16 in Australia. The team's kit was revealed by Cricket Australia on their Twitter handle on Wednesday.

The uniform was created by Aunty Fiona Clarke and Courtney Hagen in partnership with Asics; the two have previously collaborated on other indigenous designs worn by Australia. The hosts will don an indigenous-inspired jersey for the first time at a World Cup event.

For the first time ever, an Australian cricket team will compete in a major event sporting a playing uniform honouring the First Nations. Artwork surrounds the shirt, which has black sleeves and a green and gold gradient on the trunk.

The black trousers and black cap will have the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags on the brim, while the long-sleeved version will have the gold and green artwork extended onto the sleeves of the top.

The Walkabout Wickets artwork that has evolved into a dominant theme is once again centred on the front of the shirt, as it has been in prior designs. The artist of Walkabout Wickets is Clarke, a Kirrae Whurrong woman and great great granddaughter of James "Mosquito" Couzens, who played for the Aboriginal XI in a historic match at the MCG in 1866 and travelled to England in 1868 as part of the first Australian sports team to play outside of the country.

Prior to the 2016 Boxing Day Test, Clarke designed the artwork to honour the 150th anniversary of the 1866 game. Ever since it has been shown on the collar of the test shirt. Connection is a key element for the kit, and it pays tribute to the past, present, and upcoming First Nations cricketers.

"The overall design is to do with the process of connecting with yourself as an individual, as a team, in the community and whatever is surrounded by you ... with the river, the land, whatever you see," said cricekt.com.au quoting Clarke.

A Butchulla and Gubbi Gubbi woman named Hagen described that the pattern included stars to represent ancestors and wickets to indicate games played. On the shirt`s back, the First XI of the Aboriginal squad that toured England in 1868 is depicted in the shirt`s major design.

Only four Indigenous men and two Indigenous women have played international cricket for Australia since the first Test in 1877, despite the pioneering efforts of the 1868 squad, who undertook the treacherous voyage by ship to the UK and played 47 matches at locations including Lord's and The Oval.

The eye-catching new T20 World Cup uniform comes after Australia won the 2021 championship in Dubai while sporting two different uniforms, marking the first time an Australian side was required to prepare an 'alternative'. The ICC T20 World Cup will be hosted by Australia from October 16, 2022, to November 13, 2022.

Artwork surrounds the shirt, which has black sleeves and a green and gold gradient on the trunk.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Robin Uthappa took to Twitter on Wednesday (September 14) to announce his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket. Uthappa was one of the heroes of India's memorable maiden T20 World Cup triumph under former captain MS Dhoni in 2007.

Uthappa, in fact, has chosen to announce his retirement on the 15th anniversary of India's famous win against Pakistan after a bowl-out in the group stage of the 2007 T20 World Cup. It was Dhoni's first game as the captain of the Indian team and Uthappa was one of the players who successfully hit the stumps during the bowl-out to secure a thrilling win for the Men in Blue.

While Uthappa's international career never took off despite him being part of the T20 World Cup-winning team in 2007, he went on to become one of the greats of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Uthappa played for teams like Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals and CSK in his IPL career.

He was part of the CSK's title-winning squad in 2021 and was bought back by the four-time champions at the IPL mega auction earlier this year. Uthappa was a regular feature for CSK in their middle-order in IPL 2022 but failed to deliver consistently as he finished the season with 230 runs in 12 matches.

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday paved the way for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah to continue in their respective top posts. The court accepted the Indian cricket board's proposal to amend its constitution and relax the mandatory cooling-off period for an office bearer.

Agreeing to scrap off the three-year cooling period, a bench led by Justice D Y Chandrachud orally agreed that office bearers in the BCCI should be allowed to have a longer tenure. The court ruled that the cooling-off period should come into play only after an office bearer has completed two consecutive terms in either the board or a state association.

The office bearers can now hold a position in a state association and the BCCI for at least 12 years straight. They can complete two consecutive three-year terms at a state association followed by two three-year terms at the BCCI. The cooling-off period will be applicable post that.

The BCCI had sought the amendment of clause six in the board's constitution, which states that an official who has completed a term of three years each at a state cricket association and the BCCI will have to undergo a mandatory three-year cooling-off period before regaining a position in the board.

The amendment was sought in regards to the current tenure of BCCIs' office bearers, including president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah, who would have completed their respective first three-year terms at the BCCI in October this year.

Both Ganguly and Shah were serving in a state cricket association before taking over as BCCI's president and secretary in October 2019 and have completed six years. But they will now be able to continue in their respective roles and have a second term at the BCCI after the Supreme Court's order.

"We are of the considered view that the amendment would not dilute the original objective. We accept the proposed amendment," said the bench led by Justice DY Chandrachud.

The 'cooling-off period' was one of the recommendations made by the Lodha Committee in 2018 for the better functioning of cricket's administrative body in India. However, Justice DY Chandrachud-led bench agreed that a cooling-off period after just one term in office will be 'too stringent'.

“A cooling-off period of three years after just one term of three years in office is really too stringent. People should be allowed to get acquainted… You will have networks, deal with international counterparts,” said Justice Chandrachud while examining BCCI's proposed changes in the constitution.

Australia trio of left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc, all-rounders Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis are set to miss the upcoming T20I series against India due to injuries. Opener David Warner had already been rested from the trip and now, Starc (knee), Marsh (ankle) and Stoinis (side strain) have been ruled out of the short tour of India.

"Selectors felt with three games in six days across three cities -- including travel to India and internally -- Marsh, Stoinis and Starc are best served remaining in Australia to prepare for the ICC Men`s T20 World Cup," said a statement from Cricket Australia (CA).

Earlier, a report in cricket.com.au said pacer Nathan Ellis, all-rounders Daniel Sams, and Sean Abbott will be the replacements for the injured trio on their trip to India, with matches to take place on September 20, 23 and 25 in Mohali, Nagpur and Hyderabad respectively.

The last time Australia played a T20I series against India, it was in 2019, where Australia won two-match series 2-0.

Marsh and Stoinis were injured during Australia`s ODI series against Zimbabwe at Townsville and against New Zealand at Cairns. But Starc, their pace spearhead, is a late exclusion from the tour to India after a scan on his knee in Sydney on Wednesday.

The trios absence means that Australia will have some changes to their desired playing eleven on tour of India.

"The absence of Stoinis all-but guarantees Tim David will make his Australian debut on the tour as a middle-order finisher, and gives him the chance to make it difficult for Stoinis to force his way back into the side."

"Marsh`s absence could see Steve Smith move back up to No.3 with allrounder Cameron Green coming into the side, while Josh Inglis is likely to partner Aaron Finch at the top of the order with Warner rested from the tour for family time," added the report.

Injuries shackle Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis to the bench ahead of T20Is against India

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli returned to international cricket in the Asia Cup, after a break post the England tour, and regained form with scores of 35 (34), 59* (44), 60 (44), 0 (4) and 122* (61) in the continental tournament. Despite India's miserable run at the Asia Cup, eventually won by underdogs Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma-led India will be content with Kohli returning to form and will hope for him to go all-out in the 2022 T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia from October-November.

A day after Kohli's name was announced in India's final squad for the T20 WC, there is more to rejoice for his ardent fans as King Kohli has now become the first-ever cricketer to reach 50 million followers on Twitter. While he has a knack for making a plethora of runs and breaking several records on the field, he also owns the social media platforms and is recent feat on the micro-blogging platform speaks volumes of his popularity.

In addition, the 33-year-old Kohli already boasts of a massive fan following on Instagram. At present, he currently has 211 million followers. On Facebook, the former Indian skipper has over 49 million followers, taking his social media presence in excess of 310 million followers.

Kohli recently ended his century drought, since late 2019, with his maiden ton in the shortest format during India's final clash at the Asia Cup where they locked horns with Afghanistan in Dubai (on September 8). After returning with a stunning 61-ball 122 not out and starring in India's big win, Kohli said at the post-match presentation, "Firstly I am grateful for how the day went today. Time away from the game gave me a good chance to sit back and observe a lot of things about me. I mentioned one special person - Anushka - who stood by me through these tough times and I mentioned her as she has seen the absolute raw side of me throughout all these months. She was the one putting things in perspective for me, kept giving me the right kind of guidance, vision moving forward and I came back into the system as a relaxed person. It was just about enjoying the game, understanding the game and what God blessed you with. Today was the build-up of the last few games, I batted out of my skin to be honest and I surprised myself. What surprised me was my 60s became failures; quite shocking for me, batting pretty well and contributing but doesn't seem to be enough. I can't really pinpoint anything to anyone as I said God has blessed me with good things in the past and that's why I am in this position where these things can be spoken about."

Kohli will now be eager to make the most of his form leading into the T20 WC and help the Men in Blue return with the mega title. Here's the final squad of Team India for the upcoming ICC event:

Huge feat for KING KOHLI! Virat becomes first cricketer to reach 50 million followers on Twitter

There was a lot of noise on social media over the non-inclusion of wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson in India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 after the team was announced by the BCCI on Monday. Samson was overlooked as India picked Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant as the two wicket-keeper batters in the 15-man squad for the tournament in Australia next month.

Samson, who last featured for India on their tour of Zimbabwe last month, was backed by many fans on Twitter for his brilliant stroke-playing ability and swashbuckling style. However, he was reportedly never in contention to make the cut in India's squad for the T20 World Cup this year.

As per PTI, Samson was not in contention and his name was not even discussed during the meeting between the selectors on Monday ahead of the announcement of the squad. Pant was an obvious choice considering he is the only left-hander that can play in the top five in the absence of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

"Sanju in any case will be playing the ODIs against South Africa as selectors will maintain the continuity from the Zimbabwe tour. Also there was never any discussions on dropping Pant. He is the only left-hander we have at the top and he can win a match on his day," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.

While Samson's talent and skills have never been doubted, he has struggled for consistency ever since first bursting onto the scene with his exploits in the Indian Premier League (IPL) a few years back. He has now matured with age and has significantly improved his game but is yet to cement his spot in the Indian team in white-ball cricket.

Apart from the debate over the selection of players, India's disappointing performance in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 was also discussed during the meeting on Monday. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah were also present and it was pointed out that India's performance in the middle order was concerning.

"Yes, the Asia Cup performance was discussed. But obviously, more than problems, the focus is on solutions and what are the things that needs to be improved during the T20 World Cup," a BCCI official told PTI.

"There is an obvious issue with batting during the middle overs, especially between 7th to 15th where we haven't done well in the Asia Cup. Obviously, the team's think-tank is aware and we have some world-class players, who can obviously change their game as per team's needs," he added.

Samson was not in contention, no discussions on dropping Pant: BCCI source on India's T20 World Cup squad

Hardik Pandya will be India's first-choice all-rounder in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 and is expected to play a key role for the team in the tournament. Pandya has been in brilliant form ever since making his comeback to competitive cricket in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 earlier this year.

Pandya played an instrumental role in leading Gujarat Titans to their maiden IPL title in their debut season before continuing his purple patch with the Indian team. He has since been unstoppable and will be hoping to extend his stellar run at the T20 World Cup in Australia next month.

Explaining Pandya's importance in the Indian team, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar backed him to play a similar role as former all-rounder Ravi Shastri did for India in 1985. Shastri was the Man of the Series under Gavaskar's captaincy in the 1985 World Series where he notched up 182 runs in five matches, including three fifties and also picked up eight wickets.

Riding on Shastri's all-round heroics, India went on to win the tournament after defeating Pakistan in the final. Gavaskar believes Pandya can pull off something similar for India at the T20 World Cup this year and help India win the trophy.

"Yes, I think he could possibly do what Ravi Shastri did in 1985 where Ravi was the outstanding performer with both bat and ball in the entire tournament. Some good catches as well. Hardik Pandya is capable of doing that," Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.

Gavaskar also pointed out how Pandya can win matches for India not just with his batting and bowling, but also with his fielding. The star all-rounder is one of the best fielders in the side and has is capable of pulling off sensational catches and run-outs.

"Don't forget, at mid-off, he affects some electrifying run-outs as well. Direct hits at the bowler's end, catching the batter inches short. It's not just the bowling and the batting aspects of Hardik Pandya, the fielding aspect that could turn the game India's way. I won't be surprised if he is like the Ravi Shastri of 1985, if he is like the Champion of Champions," Gavaskar explained.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam might not have had the best of campaigns in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 but he remains among the finest batters in the world at present. Babar struggled to score runs consistently in the Asia Cup but Pakistan still managed to make it to the final where they lost against Sri Lanka to miss out on the title.

Babar, who is currently the no.1 ranked ODI batter in the world, is one of the most skilled batters at present and has a range of shots in his arsenal. A prolific run-getter across formats, Babar can play some exquisite strokes and is known for his brilliant cover drives.

He has often been compared with the likes of Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar over his ability to play stunning cover drives and now his famous shot has made its way into the physics book of ninth grade in Pakistan. Recently, a Pakistani journalist - Shiraz Hassan shared a screenshot of a question on Babar's cover drive in the physics book of 9th grade in the country.

Talking about Babar, he would be disappointed with his performance in the Asia Cup 2022 where the Pakistan skipper could only manage 68 runs in six matches. He managed only two double digits scores of 14 and 30 against India and Sri Lanka, respectively and flopped massively in the tournament.

Sanju Samson was trending on Twitter soon after India announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 on Monday. The wicket-keeper batter was not in the reckoning for selection but many believed he had an outside chance due to his experience and brilliant strokeplay which could have helped the Indian team during the showpiece event in Australia next month.

However, much to the dejection of many, Samson was snubbed from the 15-man squad with India selecting Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik as the two wicket-keeper batters in the team. Like many, former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria was also left baffled by Samson's absence from India's squad and called the decision unfair.

Kaneria believes Samson should have made the cut ahead of Pant in the squad and that he has not been given enough opportunities by the selectors despite performing well.

“It is a bit unfair for someone like Sanju Samson. He should have been considered for the T20 World Cup squad. What has he done wrong to not find a place? He has also been ignored for India’s home series against Australia and South Africa. I would have gone for Samson instead of Rishabh Pant,” Kaneria said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Samson last featured for India on their tour of Zimbabwe last month where he scored 58 runs in two ODIs. The talented wicket-keeper batter has been around for a while now but hasn't quite managed to live up to the expectations due to his inconsistent performances.

He was part of India's squad in the T20I series against Sri Lanka earlier this year where Indian skipper Rohit Sharma had lavished praise on the star batter and called him a match-winner. Rohit had said the Indian team management wanted to give opportunities to Samson as he is someone who has a range of shots and he can be useful in Australia.

“As a team management, we see a lot of potential, we see a lot of talent and we see a lot of match-winning abilities in that individual (Sanju Samson),” Rohit Sharma had said about Samson.

“His back-foot play is superb, some of the shots you must have seen during the IPL, the pick-up pull, the cut shots, standing and delivering over bowler’s head. Those kinds of shots are not easy to play and I believe when we go to Australia, you need that kind of shot-making ability and Samson does have it in him. I just hope that he utilises his potential to the maximum,” he added.

However, the 27-year-old has missed the bus once again and will be hoping to spark a turnaround in his international career with better performances in the opportunities that come his way in the future. Samson has so far played 7 ODIs and 16 T20Is in his career, amassing 176 and 296 runs in the two formats respectively.

Unfair for Sanju Samson: Former Pakistan cricketer questions his absence from India's T20 World Cup squad

India's 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup was announced on Monday evening (September 12). While there were some notable omissions, a lot of mainstays were included. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian squad is a good mix of youth and experience and are serious title-contenders if they play to their potential in the forthcoming showpiece event in Australia.

After the squad announcement, many former cricketers and experts of the game shared their take on the team list shared by the BCCI. In this regard, T20 World Cup medallist Robin Uthappa also opined on the squad and pointed out just one issue which the Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led team management need to address.

"[Yuzvendra] Chahal, Axar [Patel], and Ashwin are all intelligent, shrewd, and wicket-taking bowlers. Their intent will be to always look for wickets. The top four looks extremely formidable, the lower-middle order looks solid as well, they just have to find clarity over that No. 5 spot," Uthappa was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo. "That would be between Rishabh Pant and Deepak Hooda,"he further asserted.

"I think it is important to have a left-arm fast bowler, and they have that in Arshdeep Singh and he will be very effective in the death overs. Bhuvi has shown what he can do and I think he will be effective in Australia as well. I am feeling very confident about the fast bowling lineup, the bowling is in a good state, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener went onto add.

Uthappa, a member of the MS Dhoni-led team who won the inaugural T20 WC title in 2007, is confident of the Men in Blue's chances but Rohit & Co. will like to make the most of their leftover matches ahead of the mega event Down Under. After a disappointing run in the Asia Cup, India will host Australia in three T20Is and South Africa in three T20Is and ODIs, each, before boarding the flight to Australia.

Will India address the No. 5 issue, as pointed out by Uthappa, in their remaining fixtures? Time will tell...

The legendary Sachin Tendulkar remembered the late Shane Warne with a heartfelt post on his birth anniversary - on September 13. One of the greatest spinners to have played the game, Warne passed away earlier this year after suffering a heart attack while holidaying in Thailand.

Warne was born on this day in 1969 and today marks his 54th birthday. Tributes and messages have been pouring in from all corners for the Australian cricketing great, who is the second-highest wicket-taker of all time in Test cricket. As the cricket fraternity remembers Warne, Tendulkar also paid tribute to the late cricketer.

“Thinking of you on your birthday Warnie! Gone too soon. Had so many memorable moments with you. Will cherish them forever mate,” Tendulkar wrote in a tweet while sharing a picture with Warne.

England's Test head coach Brendon McCullum has revealed he was not ready to take the job when it was first offered to him but is now enjoying his stint with the team. England's Test performances have improved massively under his guidance and the team is yet to lose a Test series under him.

McCullum was serving as the head coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he was offered the England job last year. The former New Zealand captain decided to leave KKR and give his nod for the challenging position.

He has since instilled a new belief in the England Test side with a new captain in Ben Stokes and they have played some terrific cricket in the longest format. England defeated South Africa by nine wickets in the third and final Test between the two sides on Monday to clinch the three-match series 2-1 and extend their unbeaten run.

"Well, I didn't actually want the [England] job! But now I've got it, I'm loving it! Absolutely I am, and it's certainly different to what I've ever done before," McCullum said following the conclusion of the third Test between England and South Africa.

"I'm loving the opportunity to work with some of the best players in the world. I always looked at English cricket and thought there was an immense amount of talent. I didn't quite realise how much talent there is and how good these guys are and the way they think about the game," he added.

England have also adopted an aggressive brand of cricket in Tests under McCullum and have stated great success with it. Since McCullum took over as the head coach, England have recorded series wins against New Zealand and South Africa while also winning the one-off Test match against India at Edgbaston.

Team India bowed out of the Asia Cup 2022 edition, eventually won by Sri Lanka, by winning only one game in the Super Four round. With a disappointing performance, Rohit Sharma & Co. are under pressure with the T20 World Cup nearing its commencement. Ahead of the showpiece event in Australia, from October-November, India are set to play as many as three bilateral series at home, including two T20Is and a 50-over series.

India will play Australia in three T20Is and then host South Africa in as many T20Is and ODIs. Playing an ODI series right before the T20 WC doesn't make any sense. Thus, Shikhar Dhawan is expected to lead the ODI bunch in the SA home series with all the T20 WC-bound players set to be rested, as per a report in InsideSport. With Dhawan to take charge, VVS Laxman -- current NCA head -- is likely to act as the stand-in coach with Rahul Dravid & Co. flying Down Under.

"Yes, it is not ideal to have an ODI series before the T20 World Cup, but that is how it goes sometimes. Rohit, Virat, and all T20 World Cup-bound players will be rested from the ODI series. They will get a short break before departing for Australia. Shikhar will lead the side," a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Star players such as Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Harshal Patel might feature in the ODIs versus Temba Bavuma-led Proteas due to lack of match practice. Both Bumrah and Harshal missed the Asia Cup due to injury concerns but are expected to be a part of the final squad for the T20 WC. Hence, the pace duo might be given a run in the SA ODIs as well, along with white-ball vice-captain Rahul who has returned to international cricket only in mid-August.

It is reported that Indian players are expected to leave for Australia on October 10, six days before their first warm-up game. But head coach Dravid wants his players to get as much competitive practice as possible and, thus, can himself be a part of the Proteas ODIs and then leave with his players on October 12, along with their South African counterparts. Nonetheless, the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Hardik Pandya will still be rested in any case.

"Rahul wants the players to have better competitive practice, but we believe it could be detrimental. However, it will be put to discussion during the selection meeting and we will decide in due course. If Rahul decides to stay with the squad for ODIs, the squad will leave for Australia along with South African players on October 12," the BCCI official added.

Given that India failed in the last edition of the T20 WC and slipped downwards in the Asia Cup, they will be extra cautious in how they move ahead going into the upcoming ICC event (from next month).

Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel returned as India announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia next month. The Men in Blue have named a strong 15-man squad after their disappointing campaign in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 where they failed to make it to the final.

While Bumrah and Harshal have made their comeback into the squad, India have also retained the experienced Dinesh Karthik as the specialist finisher while roping in Axar Patel as a like-to-like replacement for the injured Ravindra Jadeja. Yuzvendra Chahal will lead the spin attack alongside veteran R Ashwin.

Much to the surprise of many, there are not many changes in India's squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia this year when compared to the last edition of the tournament which was staged in the UAE. India have made a total of only six changes from the 15-man squad that featured in the World Cup last year where the Men in Blue endured a disastrous campaign.

This comes as surprise as the Indian team had been experimenting significantly under new skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid with the future in mind. Several youngsters have been given the opportunity to showcase their talent on the big stage for India in the last few months but not many have managed to make the cut.

Here is a look at the changes in India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad from last year:

Outs - Ishan Kishan, Mohammed Shami, Rahul Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja would have been a certain pick in India's squad this year had he not undergone knee surgery recently. He has been replaced in the team by Axar, who might not be a first-choice starter. Karthik has come in for Ishan Kishan, who has failed to retain his spot due to a lack of chances and his inconsistent performances.

Yuzvendra Chahal's exclusion was a surprise last year and he has been roped back in at the expense of Rahul Chahar, who failed to impress in the World Cup last year. India have gone with an extra a-round option in the form of Deepak Hooda this time around instead of having an extra spinner - Varun Chakaravarthy.

Who is in, who is out? A look at changes in India's squads for T20 Word Cup 2021 and 2022

It was a dream come true moment for Dinesh Karthik as India announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 on Monday. Karthik has been selected in India's squad for the World Cup down under as one of the two wicket-keepers along with Rishabh Pant. The veteran wicket-keeper batter has had a remarkable year so far and will be looking to continue his fine form in the showpiece event next month.

Karthik has completed a stunning redemption with his selection in India's T20 World Cup team. Having last played for India in the ODI World Cup in 2019, the 37-year-old made his comeback to the team earlier this year after a brilliant campaign in IPL 2022 where he lit up games with his finishing heroics.

He continued his fine form for India in the shortest format of the game and has now managed to make the cut in the T20 World Cup squad as the team's designated finisher. He took to Twitter to react to his inclusion and posted a heartfelt message for all. "Dreams do come true," wrote Karthik.

Karthik has played 18 T20Is for India this year since making his comeback to the team and has scored 193 runs at an average of 21.44 while batting in the lower-middle order. It remains to be seen if he will manage to pip Pant as the first-choice wicket-keeper batter in the T20 World Cup or if he will be used as a specialist batter.

Apart from Karthik's inclusion, India's squad also saw the return of fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel after they recovered from their respective injuries. The duo will strengthen India's pace attack at the World Cup and will be looking to get into a rhythm in South Africa and Australia series at home ahead of the showpiece event.

Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel have been roped in as the two all-rounders in the 15-man squad while Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin have made the cut as the two spinners. The T20 World Cup 2022 is set to get underway on October 16.

Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by 23 runs in the final of the Asia Cup 2022 on Sunday to lift their sixth title and cap off an incredible tournament. The Lankans rode on a terrific all-round performance from Wanindu Hasaranga and a brilliant knock from Bhanuka Rajapaksa to shatter Pakistan's hopes of lifting the prestigious trophy.

Pakistan won the toss and opted to bowl first in the summit clash before getting off to a flying start as they reduced Sri Lanka to 58/5 inside nine overs. However, Rajapaksa (71) combined with Hasaranga (36) to steer his team to a fighting total of 170 runs.

Hasaranga continued his dream run as he picked up three wickets while pacer Pramod Madushan bagged a four-wicket haul to bundle out Pakistan for 147 runs in 20 overs and secure a comprehensive win for their country. It was a disappointing batting effort from Pakistan as their middle-order crumbled under pressure.

The top-order flopped too as both Babar Azam (5) and Fakhar Zaman (0) departed cheaply in the final. Opener Mohammad Rizwan scored 55 runs in the final and tried to keep Pakistan in the game but he failed to do so and was widely criticised for his poor strike rate in the 171-run chase.

Rizwan managed 55 runs off 49 balls at a strike rate of 112.24 which cost Pakistan the game as they fell short in the run chase. Among those who were critical of Rizwan's approach was the legendary Wasim Akram as he bashed the opening batter for his slow scoring rate.

Akram pointed out Rizwan had batted similarly against Hong Kong earlier in the tournament and revealed he was attacked on social media by fans for calling out the Pakistan batter over his performance. The legendary cricketer said insisted he is not someone who can sing false praise of someone who isn't performing well.

"At the beginning of the tournament, I had said that the openers won't mess up but struggle in games like these. That's exactly what happened today," said Akram on Star Sports after Pakistan's loss in the final.

"He (Rizwan) had done the same thing against Hong Kong if you remember. I criticised him, which was healthy criticism. And people attacked me on social media. Pakistan people said that I don't support Rizwan. If you want my opinion, I will give you the right and straightforward opinion. I am not the guy who will lie about what I see. Black is black and white is white for me," he added.

As much as Pakistan batters deserve to be blamed for their poor show, Sri Lankan bowlers should be credited for producing a brilliant effort with the ball to bundle out the Pakistan team for 147. Madushan and Hasaranga combined to run through the top and the middle-order while Chamika Karunaratne also chipped in with two wickets.

Pakistan lost to Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final on Sunday evening (September 11). Locking horns in the marquee clash, at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, Sri Lanka did the unthinkable by defending a score at the venue -- which is favourable for teams batting second -- to beat Babar Azam & Co. by 23 runs. With this win, the Islanders not only made a strong statement ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition -- from next month in Australia -- but also went on to claim their sixth Asia Cup title overall.

Talking about the contest, Pakistan opted to bowl first and reduced the Lankans to 58 for 5 in 8.5 overs. From thereon, Bhanuka Rajapaksa's 71 and all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga's 21-ball 36 propelled them to a fighting 170 for 6 in 20 overs. In reply, Pakistan only managed 147 all-out in 20 overs with Md Rizwan scoring a 49-ball 55 and Iftikhar Ahmad's 31-ball 32. While the batters failed to get going, Pakistani fielding was also not up to the mark.

Shadab Khan, one of the best fielders in Team Pakistan, dropped Rajapaksa twice. In the 17th over of the Lankan innings, he gave a reprieve to the left-hander and once again dropped him in the next over as well, colliding with Asif Ali as the ball went for a six. He returned with decent bowling figures, 4-0-28-1, but only managed a six-ball 8 during the run-chase. Taking cognizance of his ordinary day on the 22-yard cricket strip, the all-rounder was quick to accept his mistakes and shared a heartfelt note on Twitter.

After the match, Shadab Khan took to Twitter and wrote, "Catches win matches. Sorry, I take responsibility for this loss. I let my team down. Positives for team, @iNaseemShah, @HarisRauf14, @mnawaz94, and the entire bowling attack was great. @iMRizwanPak fought hard. The entire team tried their best. Congratulations to Sri Lanka."

Apart from Shadab, even Md Rizwan was slammed for his unimpressive 49-ball 55-run knock. The right-hander remained Pakistan's highest run-getter but was trolled for not being able to score freely. He ended with a below-par strike rate of 112.24.

At the post-match presentation, Babar said, "Congratulations to Sri Lanka for playing outstanding cricket. We dominated them for the first eight overs, but the partnership that Rajapaska got was amazing. This was a true wicket and it is always nice playing in Dubai. We didn't bat according to our potential. We started well, but we gave away 15-20 extra runs and couldn't finish well. A lot of positives for us to take. In a final, the margin for mistakes is lesser. Our fielding wasn't up to the mark and the batting couldn't finish it off well. But Rizwan, Naseem and Nawaz were positives. Ups and downs will be there, but it would be nicer if we made lesser mistakes."

I let my team down: Pakistan star blames himself as Babar Azam & Co. lose to Sri Lanka in Asia Cup final

Australia's T20I captain Aaron Finch surprisingly announced his retirement from ODIs last week confirming that the third ODI against New Zealand on Sunday was his last game in the fifty-over format. While he has brought down the curtains on his ODI career, Finch will continue to lead Australia in T20Is.

Finch captained Australia in a total of 54 ODI matches out of the 145 games he played in his ODI career. His retirement came after the right-hander's poor run with the willow which saw many question his credentials as captain. However, Finch himself decided to step down leaving Australia in search of a new captain ahead of the ODI World Cup next year.

While Test captain Pat Cummins remains one of the favourites to take over the reins in ODIs as well, Finch himself has backed his opening partner David Warner to lead Australia in the fifty-over format. However, Cricket Australia (CA) are in a tricky spot as far as Warner is concerned as the veteran batter has a lifetime ban on him from taking any leadership roles in the team.

Warner was banned for a lifetime from taking any leadership roles for Australia after his role in the infamous ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in 2018. He was punished alongside the likes of former captain Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft by CA for their involvement in the scandal.

While his ban is yet to be lifted, Finch believes Warner should be given the opportunity to lead Australia as he is an unbelievable tactical captain. Finch said he loved playing under Warner while urging CA to overturn his leadership ban.

"I think CA (Cricket Australia) I think are revisiting what that looks like. He’s someone I’ve played under a few times for Australia when he’s had the opportunity to captain, and he’s been fantastic. He’s an unbelievable tactical captain and someone who at the time the guys loved playing under," Finch said on Triple M radio.

"I’m not 100 percent sure of what CA’s position is on it. But would I like to see it overturned? (Yes) he’s someone who, you do your time and he’s well and truly done that I think," he added.

Warner has been a vital cog in the Australian team across formats ever since his return from the one-year-ban on him imposed in the aftermath of the ball-tampering scandal in 2018. The left-hander played an instrumental role in Australia's maiden T20 World Cup triumph last year under Finch's captaincy.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to announce India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 on Monday (September 12). The selectors face some major selection headaches after India's disappointing campaign in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 where they were dumped out of the competition from the Super Four stage.

As per a report in the Times of India, there will be an online meeting of the BCCI selection panel on Monday afternoon where the squad for the T20 World Cup will be picked and announced later in the day. Head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma are also expected to be part of the meeting.

Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who recently underwent knee surgery is unlikely to be picked as he will remain out of action for a few months. Jadeja was ruled out midway through India's Asia Cup campaign after aggravating his knee injury during training.

However, in what comes as a major boost for the Indian team ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia next month, fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel have recovered well and are available for selection. The duo had missed the Asia Cup dues to respective injuries and their absence was dearly felt by the Indian team.

While Bumrah and Harshal are expected to make the cut, veteran pacer Mohammed Shami also remains in contention. Shami has not been in India's T20I plans for a while now but he remains in contention as the selectors might look at fresh changes in the pace attack after a disappointing show from the fast bowlers in the Asia Cup.

Avesh Khan, who was part of India's squad in the Asia Cup, failed to impress and might make way for Shami. However, the likes of Deepak Chahar and Umran Malik are also among major contenders for a spot in the final 15 alongside Bumrah, Harshal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh.

India's middle-order to looked unsettled in Jajdeja's absence during the Asia Cup and it remains to be seen if the likes of Sanju Samson or Shreyas Iyer will be included in the squad to add depth to India's batting. The selectors will also have to take a call whether they want to pick Dinesh Karthik as a specialist finisher or first-choice wicket-keeper batter ahead of Rishabh Pant.

Both Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda are expected to keep their spots along with the top three of skipper Rohit, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli, who rediscovered his form in the Asia Cup with some splendid performances.
