Captain Rohit Sharma, a record-breaker in this series, achieved historic milestones, including the highest number of centuries in World Cup history and setting a record for the most international sixes. ICC World Cup 2023: Australia defeat Sri Lanka by 5 wickets

Steven Smith is regarded as one of the best batters of this generation. However, the 34-year-old has failed to impress at the 2023 ODI World Cup. The Australian was dismissed for a 5-ball duck against Sri Lanka and has scored just 65 runs in three matches at the showpiece event.

ICC World Cup 202: Afghanistan Shock Defending Champions England in Delhi

ICC World Cup 2023: Afghanistan beat defending champions England by 69 runs

It may have taken 10 days but the ODI World Cup in India has its first 'upset' - one that will be cherished by the whole of Afghanistan for years to come, especially in light of recent devastating events. Afghanistan, playing a near-perfect game, pinned defending champions England on the mat to win the contest by 69 runs in front of a vociferous Afghan-supporting crowd gathered at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Fine bowling performances from Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan ensured that England never really got a whiff of victory, chasing a challenging target of 285. Fazalhaq Farooqi struck first upfront when he trapped Jonny Bairstow in front of the stumps before Mujeeb weaved his magic to send danger man Joe Root (11) back to the hut.

Harry Brook (66), who parachuted into the World Cup squad at the eleventh hour, was the sole man who fought against the Afghan attack but could not make it count as he succumbed under pressure as well. Mujeeb, brought in for a new spell, extracted some turn from the pitch and got the Englishman's outside edge which was snaffled up with utmost glee by Ikram, behind the sticks.

For England, it was a continuation of poor planning, inability to adapt to the wicket and deviating from the strategy that had brought them great success over the last few years. The champions repeated the mistakes of the first match against New Zealand where they played timidly and were made to eat the humble pie.

While most might term it an 'upset', it feels a disservice to Afghanistan to dub their victory one - for they had been knocking on the door to produce such a performance against one of the top teams for some time. Even India in the previous game had to bring their A-game to get over the line, though the scoreboard might suggest otherwise.

Afghanistan's flying start, collapse and rebuild

Asked to bat first on a rather belter of a Delhi pitch, Afghanistan batters were off the block in a flying manner. Both English opening bowlers, Reece Topley and Chris Woakes failed to hit their mark and were duly punished by the pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. The former was particularly severe as he manoeuvred the white ball around the turf with a composed yet deadly technique.

Consequently, Afghanistan raced to 79 in the first 10 overs and looked unstoppable for a big score. Things went downhill quite quickly though. Ibrahim Zadran was the first to go and Rahmat Shah didn't last long. Gurbaz, who was looking so good, was tragically run out the very next ball for 80.

The wickets continued to fall as Afghanistan slumped from 114/0 to 190/6 in no time. Adil Rashid, Joe Root and Liam Livingstone - all three English spinners spun a web around the Afghan batters and reaped rich dividends for it. Just when it looked like Afghanistan's innings might come to a tame end, Ikram Alikhil put his hand up and stitched a little partnership with Rashid Khan to take his team to a respectable total of 284, which, in hindsight, proved to be enough.

The defeat leaves England to do some intense soul-searching as the side looks devoid of ideas and aggression on the field - two tenets which dictated their maverick 2019 World Cup campaign.

Afghanistan's flying start, collapse and rebuild Asked to bat first on a rather belter of a Delhi pitch, Afghanistan batters were off the block in a flying manner.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially approved cricket’s return to the Olympics after President Thomas Bach announced it on Friday (Oct 13). The official word came during the IOC’s board meeting in Mumbai where the proposal was on the agenda. It was one of the five sports on the agenda as host organisers accepted the proposal to include cricket along with baseball/softball, flag football (non-contact American football), squash, and lacrosse. With this cricket I set to return to the Olympics after 128 years, having last been part of the games in Paris in 1900.

Cricket in Olympics

Speaking after Friday’s meeting, President Bach was optimistic about the inclusion of the sport as the International Cricket Council (ICC) and other bodies pushed for its inclusion. While there is approval for cricket to be included in the LA 2028 Olympics, the sport will still need to be voted in by the IOC membership in a ballot due to be held on Monday before they are assured of a place at the 2028 Games.

Cricket was last included in the Olympics in 1900 when it was held in Paris with cricketing bodies formerly pushing for it to be included in the 2020 games. The shortest version of the game – the T20 (20 over per side) format was put on the proposal in the IOC meeting, where it has now got the green lights. The LA organisers also approved its inclusion paving the way for cricket to be part of the popular tournament.

This will be a positive sign for the Indian Olympics as they will be one of the hot favourites to win a medal if it gets the final green light. India’s men’s and women’s teams recently won gold medals in the Asian Games, which are encouraging signs for the nation in the build-up to the games.

India has been building on their Olympics success in recent years having amassed a record tally of seven medals in the Tokyo Olympics including a gold medal for Neeraj Chopra in athletics. India also won six medals in the 2012 London Games, showing signs of great development in the Olympics.

Cricket’s inclusion could see India build on the recent success, especially in the gold medals tally. India gave won 10 gold medals in the Olympics with eight of those coming in hockey.
