India take on New Zealand in the first semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup on Wednesday. The India team has been unstoppable with a hundred percent record in the tournament while the Kiwis overcame a mid-tournament slump to get in ahead of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Kiwis have a history of dashing Indian hopes in ICC events and will look to silence the home crowd at Mumbai's Wankhede stadium. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore and former New Zealand international Chris Harris tell us who will be game-changers in this clash.

ODI WC: Who will be the key players in the semi-final between India and New Zealand?

India's nine consecutive wins in the group stage of the Cricket World Cup has been largely down to a bowling attack that has not conceded more than 273 in any game. The five frontline bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj have combined for a total of 75 wickets and have been extremely economical as well with all five going under 5 runs-per-over. How do New Zealand negotiate this threat? 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore and former New Zealand international Chris Harris discuss New Zealand's options ahead of the first semi-final.

ODI WC: Will India's bowlers blow New Zealand away in the semi-final?

India face their 'bogey' team New Zealand in the first semi-final of the ODI World Cup in Mumbai's Wankhede stadium. The heartbreak of the 2019 semi-final loss in Manchester is still fresh in the minds of the Indian fans when Mahendra Singh Dhoni was run out by Martin Guptill. The Men in Blue lost that semi-final by 18 runs. However, India beat the kiwis by four wickets in the group stage to end a 20-year wiat for a win over New Zealand in a global tournament. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore and former New Zealand international Chris Harris set up the clash with Wion Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

Pakistan's Director of Cricket Mickey Arthur said their bowling equilibrium was disbalanced with Naseem Shah's absence in the ODI World Cup 2023. Pakistan exited the quadrennial tournament with five wins in nine games and failed to qualify for the semis.

"It's not an excuse. Our bowling equilibrium was out of kilter because Naseem Shah provides the consistency, where it allows Shaheen Shah [Afridi] to attack, and then you can attack with your legspinner and you attack with Haris Rauf. So, the equilibrium was upset but that is no excuse at all because quite frankly we haven't played well enough," said Arthur after Pakistan's loss against England in their last league match on November 11 in Kolkata.

Arthur also conceded that Pakistan have to become a team which posts 300+ totals on a regular basis like the teams which have made it to the semifinals of the ongoing ODI World Cup.

"Batting-wise, we have to become a 330-350 team," he said. "The teams that are doing that and doing that consistently are the teams that are in the semi-final. And I don't think we've done that consistently enough. We do that when Fakhar Zaman comes off and we can't just be relying on one-on-one player."

Talking about Babar, Arthur said he's learning from his captaincy and it's not crime to make mistakes as the team, as a whole, learns from them.

"I get behind Babar - he is very, very close to me," Arthur said. "He's a young guy that needs to be taken on the journey with. He needs to be shown the ropes. He's still learning all the time. We know he's a very, very fine batsman. He learns every day with his captaincy."

"He's growing and we have to allow him the time to grow," added Arthur. "And in order to do that, you make mistakes. It's not a crime to make mistakes as long as you learn from those mistakes and as a group, we've made a lot of mistakes this World Cup. But if this group grows and learns from it, we've got the core of a very, very good side."

Pakistan had started the tournament well with two wins on the trot but lost four matches consecutively in between which eventually proved fatal for their hopes to makes it to the last four.

Sri Lankan men's cricket team captain Kusal Mendis has issued a clarification after his comments regarding Indian batter Virat Kohli brought him flak on social media.

Addressing Sri Lankan media after a disappointing World Cup campaign, Mendis said he was 'absolutely wrong' to not congratulate Kohli when he reached his 49th ODI century.

"On that day I went for the press conference and I was not aware that Virat had scored a century. When suddenly that journalist asked that question, I didn’t know what to say. And also I didn’t understand the question clearly," Mendis was quoted as saying by Asian Mirror.

"Scoring 49 ODI tons is not an easy job to do, Virat is one of the brilliant cricketers in the world, later I realised what I said was absolutely wrong. I now feel I shouldn't have reacted the way I did," he added.

Notably, on the day Kohli scored the record-breaking ton, Mendis was asked in an interview if he would like to congratulate the Indian batter for the feat. However, Mendis, visibly irritated by the randomness of the question replied: "Why I would congratulate him?"

While a section of fans sympathised with Mendis saying he was not obligated to congratulate a rival, others said a simple positive message would not have done any harm to the Sri Lankan captain.

Kohli's record-equalling century

Kohli hit his 49th ODI century at the Eden Gardens against South Africa in the penultimate league match of the World Cup, equalling Sachin Tendulkar's record. After the century, Tendulkar posted a congratulatory message for Kohli and urged him to eclipse the record quickly.

"Well played Virat. It took me 365 days to go from 49 to 50 earlier this year," posted Tendulkar on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Kohli, who was adjudged the Player of the Match for his innings said he felt "honoured" to equal "hero" Tendulkar's record.

“Tendulkar's tweet is quite special,” Kohli said. "It's all too much to take in for now. It's a huge honour to equal my hero's record. He's perfection with the bat. It's an emotional moment. I know the days I come from, I know the days I have watched him on TV."

'What I said...': Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis reacts on his 'why would I congratulate Virat Kohli' comment

Over the years, several cricketers have achieved incredible feats across all departments to enter the history books. Gareth Morgan, a local council worker and the captain of Mudgeeraba Nerang & Districts Cricket Club in Gold Coast, Australia, created history by picking six wickets on six consecutive balls in a single over to seal an improbable win for his team in Gold Coast's Premier League Division 3 competition on Saturday.

Facing Surfers Paradise at Carrara Community Centre, Mudgeeraba’s Gareth Morgan picked six wickets in the final over to help his team win the match by four runs.

Needing five off the last over, Surfers Paradise’s Jake Garland was the first batter to get out on 65. In one of the rarest feats recorded in club or professional cricket, Morgan removed the next three batters caught before, wrapping the tail via bowled dismissal on the last two deliveries.

Still pinching himself over bagging this record, Morgan, while speaking with ABC, revealed he had thought of giving his younger brother the last over.

"I think I was more focused on trying to win the game for our boys," he told the ABC. "We've been going really well this year, and we had a younger fella lining up to bowl, but I thought, 'I'll bowl — they can hit the winning runs off me, this younger fella doesn't need that'."

After completing his hat-trick, Morgan admitted to thinking about winning the game from an impossible position.

"I remember thinking after I got the hat trick — I don't want to lose this game now," he said. "When I saw the stumps go back on the last ball, I couldn't believe it — I've never seen anything like it."

‘Everyone went wild with celebration

Talking about his team’s celebration over this, Morgan said everyone went wild, as none could believe what transpired in those six balls.

"Everyone was going wild. It was incredible, I don't think anyone could believe it had happened," he said. "It was definitely up there with one of my best moments.

"I'm happy to be part of history."

Meanwhile, in all professional cricket, there have been three bowlers who picked five wickets from five balls in an over - Neil Wagner (2011), Al-Amin Hossain (2013) and Abhimanyu Mithun (2019).

Two Indian veterans, Virender Sehwag and Diana Edulji, alongside Sri Lankan batting great Aravinda de Silva, are the latest inductees into ICC’s Hall of Fame. The cricket’s governing body announced their inclusion on Monday, with all three acknowledging the utmost honour for the service they provided on the field.

One of India’s greatest openers across formats, Sehwag deserves to be in ICC’s Hall of Fame for the impact he had on the game and Indian Cricket.

Regarded by countless as perhaps the most destructive batter since the great Viv Richards, Sehwag was the first Indian to complete a triple hundred in Tests – scoring 309 against Pakistan in Multan, 2004. A few years later, he scored his second triple-century against South Africa in Chennai in 2008.

Even during the 2011 World Cup, Sehwag was among the top run-getters and helped India clinch the coveted trophy for the first time in 28 years.

Diana Edulji, the trailblazer for women’s cricket in India both on and off the field, is the first female cricketer from the country to be inducted into ICC’s Hall of Fame.

Outside of her three-decade career on the field, wherein as a left-arm orthodox spinner, she picked over 100 wickets, Edulji worked towards providing employment opportunities for talented female cricketers in the country in the Railways. She also helped shape the sports policy of Western and Indian Railways.

“At the outset, I would like to thank the ICC and the Jury for having selected me to be inducted in the ICC Hall Of Fame 2023," Edulji said. “It indeed is a great honour to be the first Indian Women Cricketer to be inducted and join a galaxy of cricketers, male and female from across the world.

"I am delighted to be considered for this award. It's not only a proud moment for me, my family and friends but also for BCCI and Indian Women's Cricket.”

South Africa will play Australia in the second semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup next week. The Proteas have never won the World Cup or the T20 World Cup and have traditionally been referred to as chokers. They now have the opportunity to go all the way and emulate their Rugby team which won the World Cup last month. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore though isnt convinced they are the real deal.

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma suffered a hamstring injury during their last ODI World Cup 2023 league match against Afghanistan on November 10 in Ahmedabad. With the injury, Bavuma could very well be in doubt for the the semifinal against Australia on November 15 or 16. The South African skipper, however, insists that it (injury) is going to be fine.

"Obviously my leg is sore - don't know to what extent - but it's going be have to be fine [for the semifinal]," Bavuma said after the win over Afghanistan. "Obviously I had that option of coming off, but I think as much as it was our last group-stage game, probably it didn't have a big bearing in terms of the play-off.

"But I still wanted to be out there with the guys. It was an opportunity for me to get some time in the middle [batting], so I didn't want to let that go. But also to keep leading the guys, keep marshalling out in the field, [and] keep strengthening those relationships with the bowlers. It was a bit risky, staying on the field - but that's what I felt was right at that time," he added.

Bavuma left the field nine balls into the match while fielding but came back after four overs, only to field gingerly. Had he stayed out, he would have had to wait significant amount of time before coming on to bat in the second innings or until five wickets were down.

The skipper, nonetheless, batted at his usual position - opening the innings with Quinton de Kock and scored 23 runs as he added 64 runs for the first wicket with de Kock in chase of 245. This was South Africa's second win in the ODI World Cup 2023 while chasing. They had also won against Pakistan but by just a wicket and had lost against Netherlands and India while chasing.

Bavuma took pride in the five-wicket win against Afghanistan and said: "[There was a] lot of understanding as to how we can go about that chase. Fantastic knock by Rassie, who took ownership of that innings, and guys batted around him."

South Africa finished the league stage with seven wins and two losses in nine games.

England's golden generation will play together one final time and will look to end a dismal title defence on a high with qualification for the ICC Champions Trophy still up for grabs. New Zealand's win over Sri Lanka all but knocked Pakistan out but the 1992 Champions still have a mathematical shot at progressing if they bat first. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore sets up the game with Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

Can Pakistan beat the odds one final time?

West Indies cricket legend Viv Richards has said that Virat Kohli's mental strength is what sets the Indian player apart from others in the game. Richards said that Kohli has backed himself to perform well through tough times and the results are visible now for everyone to see.

The India batter has been on song in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 with 543 runs in eight matches so far - the most for India and third most overall. Kohli has also hit two centuries in the quadrennial tournament and equaled former India player Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI hundreds.

"Virat is a go-getter and what sets him apart is his mental strength. He will have backed himself throughout, and on the occasions in the past in which I have chatted with him and we have discussed things, his mental strength has always been evident.

“That has been key to pushing him through to how he is playing now. Very few players, or people, are built like that,” Richards told the ICC.

He will have backed himself throughout, and on the occasions in the past in which I have chatted with him and we have discussed things, his mental strength has always been evident. “That has been key to pushing him through to how he is playing now. Very few players, or people, are built like that,” Richards told the ICC. New Zealand are all but through to the semi-finals of the World Cup with a clinical five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. The Kiwis will most likely play India in the last-four. The Kiwis are set to play in their fifth straight World Cup semi-finals.

New Zealand all but through to semi-finals

There are some innings that define a player's career. Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan rescued Australia from a precarious 91/7 with 201 still to get. The Big Show's astonishing assault while battling adversity ranks up there with the greatest knocks ever seen in ODIs. Maxwell's innings drew instant comparisons with Kapil Dev's 175* against Zimbabwe at the 1983 World Cup, Herschelle Gibbs' 175 against Australia in that astonishing 438 chase in Jo'burg and Steve Waugh's 120* against the Proteas in the Super Six stage of the 1999 World Cup. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore believes rates this innings from Maxwell at the top of the pile.

Is Glenn Maxwell's 201 better than Kapil Dev's 175 in 1983?

Glenn Maxwell singlehandedly rescued Australia from a hopeless situation and carried the five-time World Champions to a remarkable three-wicket win over Afghanistan at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. Maxwell was cramping and also battling a lower back injury which restricted his ability to play a proper innings but the Big Show produced a defiant display of hitting that will be remembered in the annals of Cricket. He became just the third batter to score a double hundred in a World Cup game and scored 82% of his team's run when at the crease. Maxwell finished unbeaten on 201 off 128 balls and his knock saw Australia qualify for the semi-finals. That innings left 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore speechless.

Match 38 of the ODI World Cup was held between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, where Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangla Tigers won by three wickets in pursuit of 280 (with 53 balls to spare). While Tanzim Hasan Sakib's three-fer, Najmul Hossain Shanto's 90 and captain Shakib's 82 helped Bangladesh win a dramatic contest, in New Delhi, the game will be remembered for Angelo Mathews being the first batter to be timed out in international cricket.

Mathews was declared timed out after the former Sri Lankan captain did not face a single delivery during the two-minute window, as stipulated in tournament laws, due to helmet issues. This led to Shakib appealing and the umpires ruling Mathews out. It resulted in a huge controversy and the Lankan all-rounder didn't mince his words in the post-match presser, where he explained his side and termed 'Shakib and Bangladesh' disgraceful for 'stooping so low'.

Mathews said, "It was obviously disgraceful from Shakib and Bangladesh. If they want to take wickets like that and stoop down to that level, there's something wrong, drastically."

"It's very disappointing way that Bangladesh played. If it was mankading or obstructing the field, there's no issue. Within two minutes I was at the crease, and it was when I was at the crease that my helmet broke. The umpires saw this. I still had five seconds left. After I showed my helmet, the umpires said [Bangladesh] had appealed. So I asked where common sense was because my two minutes hadn't passed," he further opined.

Mathews added, "I've got no words to explain it. In my 15 years of playing I've never seen a team or a player stoop so low. Unfortunately [the strap breaking] happened against Bangladesh. I don't think any other team would do that, because it was black and white. It was equipment malfunction. It was a safety issue as well. We know that without a helmet I can't face the bowling."

Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Shakib said at the post-match ceremony, "One of our fielders came to me and said if you appeal now, he'll be out. Then I appealed and the umpire asked me if I am serious and if I am going to take it back or not. I said no, it's in the rules. It's in the laws."

The final result led to Sri Lanka's elimination from the ten-team tournament. Bangladesh, who are already eliminated, broke their six-match losing streak and are in contention to book a place in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
