More than 75,000 people have died from the coronavirus in Europe, with 80 per cent of the fatalities occurring in Italy, Spain, France and Britain.

According to an AFP tally, with a total of 75,011 deaths from 909,673 infections, Europe is the hardest-hit continent in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Europe's most affected country is Italy with 19,468 deaths, followed by Spain with 16,972, France with 13,832 and Britain with 9,875.

The death toll from the virus soared past 109,000 this weekend, with more than 1.7 million reported infections globally.

In the United States alone, there are over half a million cases. The US has also overtaken Italy and logged the highest number of coronavirus related deaths in a country ever.

Unprecedented scenes of empty churches emerged from Italy to Panama and the Philippines, as religious leaders found creative ways to address parishioners marking the holiday weekend from the confines of their homes.

Speaking from a near-empty Saint Paul's Cathedral, Pope Francis' Easter Sunday message was largely focused on the pandemic, offering prayers for the ill and urging a united European front to fight the pandemic.

"For many, this is an Easter of solitude lived amid the sorrow and hardship that the pandemic is causing, from physical suffering to economic difficulties," he said, in a livestreamed message beamed around the world.

He called for European "solidarity" in the face of the virus, adding: "After the Second World War, this beloved continent was able to rise again." The pope had earlier urged creativity to mark the holy weekend -- a call that appears to have been met by some of the world's two billion-plus Christians.

In Panama an archbishop blessed his nation from a helicopter, while worshippers in Spain blasted music from their balconies and US President Donald Trump said he would be among those following Easter services online.

In a church north of the Philippines capital Manila, hundreds of pictures of parishioners were taped to pews as a priest held a Sunday service to a near-empty room.

"Those photos are the representations of the people who are watching and attending mass through livestreaming, so we also feel their presence virtually," said Father Mark Christopher De Leon.

"This is our way of being with them, praying for them spiritually, praying for them, praying for their safety."

As virus-tinged Easter celebrations were held worldwide, leaders in some hard-hit countries expressed cautious optimism the number of deaths and infections could be starting to peak.
Spain saw its daily death toll drop for three days straight -- but on Sunday reported a slight spike again with 619 fresh fatalities. And though Italy was nearing the 20,000 dead mark, its daily death toll and rate of new infections has started to level off.

In France, newly reported coronavirus deaths fell by one-third from Friday to 635 on Saturday.

"A very high plateau for the epidemic appears to have been reached, but the epidemic remains very active," said French health official Jerome Salomon, urging people to remain vigilant. In the United States, New Orleans and hardest hit New York saw a slowdown in the number of new infections, deaths and hospitalisations, offer a shred of hope.

Trump said this past week that the disease was near its peak in the US and he was considering ways to re-open the world's biggest economy as soon as possible.

"We look like we'll be coming in on the very, very low side, below the lowest side of the curve of death," Trump said in an interview with Fox News.

In Britain, the death toll continued to mount and fatalities are likely to soon top 10,000.
Virus-stricken Prime Minister Boris Johnson was released from hospital Sunday after he was admitted for coronavirus last Sunday, and spent three days in intensive care.

He praised his medical team Sunday before he left hospital. "I can't thank them enough. I owe them my life," said 55-year-old Johnson.

There were worrying signs the virus could be taking hold in new -- and vulnerable -- parts of the world, from the crowded slums of Mexico City, Nairobi and Mumbai to conflict hotspots in the Middle East.

Conflict-wracked Yemen reported its first case last week, sparking dire warnings from aid workers about the burden an outbreak could have on an already ravaged healthcare system.

And in Mumbai's crowded Dharavi slum -- one of Asia's biggest and the inspiration for the 2008 Oscar-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire" -- more than 43 cases were confirmed.

All shops, except pharmacies, were closed near so-called "containment zones" to limit the number of people in public spaces. "We have been running extensive medical camps in Dharavi and other areas of Mumbai to test more people for coronavirus and make sure carriers are not ignored just because they don't display symptoms," a local official spokesman Khabale-Patil said.

Many experts and the World Health Organization are cautioning countries against lifting lockdown measures too quickly to avoid a second wave of infections.

China, where the virus first emerged at the end of last year in the central city of Wuhan, has seen in increase in imported infections as it starts to ease strict lockdown measures.

Europe's coronavirus death toll tops 75,000; Easter celebrations muted under lockdown

A woman in Delhi was stopped by police for not wearing a mask while cycling despite clear instructions from the government to cover oneself in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

The incident happened in southwest Delhi's Vasant Vihar area at around 6.30 pm, the police said on Sunday. The woman is an Uruguayan national.

The Delhi government has made it compulsory for people to wear face masks when stepping outside their houses in a bid to check the spread of coronavirus.

Vasant Vihar Station House Officer (SHO) Ravi Shankar, along with his team, was patrolling the area when they stopped the foreign national while she was cycling at Paschimi Marg for violating the government order.

In a video clip recorded by the police, the woman could be seen arguing with the SHO when he told her that she was violating a government order by not wearing a mask. The woman continued to argue and also noted down the name of the SHO.

When asked to show her identity card, she refused to oblige, following which the police noted down her name, he added.

A representative from the Resident Welfare Association of the area then assured the police that they were taking all measures and trying to convince the foreign nationals staying in the area to follow the guidelines.

The police have written to the embassy of Uruguay about the incident.

The United Arab Emirates has launched an online wedding service that allows couples to wed amid restrictions on movement and interaction imposed to counter the deadly coronavirus.

The UAE has taken strict measures to combat the spread of the COVID-19 respiratory disease, which has claimed the lives of well over 100,000 people worldwide.

The justice ministry has said the citizens and residents can set a date for an online wedding ceremony conducted via video link with a cleric after their paperwork is submitted and approved -- also online.

Further, according to the UAE's official news agency WAM, the procedure will see a cleric confirm the identity of the couple and witnesses, before a marriage certificate is relayed to a specialised court for validation. The couple will receive confirmation of their marriage certificate via text message.

The service was launched "to maintain the health of the public and that of people working in courts and to limit the presence of employees", WAM reported.

This comes after Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the UAE, said on Wednesday it suspended "until further notice" marriages and divorces in the emirate. No announcement has been made about divorce proceedings.

Dubai has temporarily restricted the movement of people and vehicles, except for those working in "vital sectors" and with "essential needs" -- such as food or medicine.

The UAE has recorded more than 3,700 coronavirus cases, including 20 deaths.

Millions of people have lost jobs in the economic fallout following the coronavirus lockdown in China, throwing into jeopardy an ambitious target to eradicate poverty this year.

China has so far claimed success in its battle against the coronavirus. But on the economy front, Beijing has been working to fire it up.

Despite being a country of skyscrapers and high-tech innovations, China still has millions of people on meagre incomes. About 5.5 million rural Chinese live in poverty, defined by the government as surviving on less than 2,300 yuan ($326) a year.

A slowing economy puts pressure on a key Communist Party goal to become a "moderately prosperous society" by the end of 2020, an ambition in place long before the virus emerged. It also threatens a long-held tacit agreement between people and party that freedoms can be sacrificed in return for economic progress, an understanding that largely forms the basis of the authoritarian government's legitimacy in the absence of elections.

China has little in the way of social security benefits and workers who lose their jobs have an inadequate safety net, meaning mass unemployment often brings a fear of unrest.

Official statistics show jobless numbers have soared, with roughly five million more people out of work between December and February.

Data firm Caixin said its services purchasing managers' index, a key indicator of activity in the services sector, showed companies cut staff at the quickest pace on record in March.

With much of the rest of the world still locked in all-consuming battles against the virus, the pandemic is expected to heavily weigh on demand for Chinese goods. Analysts at financial services firm Nomura said the nation could lose around 18 million jobs in the export sector -- nearly a third of the industry's workforce.

This growing unemployment will be a major blow to consumption -- a key driver of China's growth.

Rising unemployment from fight against coronavirus threatens China's poverty targets

China is now in recovery mode, as coronavirus seems to be exiting the country - city by city. The only new cases being reported now come from outside the country.

However a new problem is brewing in the country. Owing to fake news and rumour mongering, instances of racism and xenophobia have increased in Chinese cities.

Amid pleas from Chinese regime to not refer to COVID-19 as “Chinese virus” or “Wuhan crisis”, it is ironic how the country has done nothing to protect foreign nationals stuck in the country in the midst of the pandemic.

African nationals across the country have been abruptly evicted by landlords, and hotels have also kicked out people belonging to the African continent. This began after rumours of Africans bringing new cases into the country spread like wildfire across local circles.

The Chinese authorities have done nothing to help the foreigners so far.

Additionally, a comic recently went viral. In the strip, all foreigners were labelled “trash”.

In the first time ever in the history of the United States, all 50 states have put under a disaster declaration after president Donald Trump approved the order yesterday.

As part of this declaration, states may use federal funds and reserves to combat the disaster, ie, COVID-19.

Wyoming was the last state to be declared a disaster-infested state, and the 50th.

Even off-mainland territories - the US Virgin islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico have been declared areas undergoing a disaster at the moment.

“Though Wyoming has not reached the dire situations of some states, this declaration will help us to prepare and mobilise resources when we need them,” said Wyoming’s governor, Mark Gordon, in a statement. He had requested the declaration earlier this week.

Wyoming is US’ least populated state and has over 253 positive cases of the virus so far. It is home to over 578,000 people and has recorded no deaths so far.

As part of relief measures, the US government came up with the Defense Production Act. Under this, private players in the industry will be ordered to provide assistance to the Trump administration in dealing with the crisis.

Over $133 million has been set aside for this. As reported by The Guardian, it will “increase domestic production capacity of N95 masks to over 39m in the next 90 days”. The names of companies that would be taking part in the project are expected by next week.

As the original epicentre of COVID-19 pandemic returns to normalcy, people have been seen swarming the streets to hold funerals for their passed loved ones.

No funeral ceremonies were done after January 25, when it was banned as part of lockdown measures, CNN reported. No cemeteries were open either.

The remains of corpses were held in funeral homes and people were instructed to wait out the peak of the virus, after which they would be allowed to collect the remains.

Transport was shut, people were told to self-isolate, and funerals were disallowed.

Unfortunately, none of the victims received cremation in presence of their family members. The corpses were taken to funeral homes from hospitals directly.

In the end of March, fresh cases started to dip in the city, and after one point no new cases were being reported.

As this happened, people were allowed to collect the ashes of their deceased relatives from funeral homes.

People have, since then, stormed the funeral homes to collect the ashes of their deceased loved ones. Social media was swarmed with images of long queues with people holding pictures of their family members who had died due to the virus.

Wuhan is slowly coming back to life as businesses open and shops are resuming business. Cars are visible in the streets again.

Just in Wuha, over 2,500 people lost their lives to the virus, which constitutes over 77 per cent of all coronavirus deaths in China.

As the original epicentre of COVID-19 pandemic returns to normalcy, people have been seen swarming the streets to hold funerals for their passed loved ones. No funeral ceremonies were done after January 25, when it was banned as part of lockdown measures, CNN reported.

In these tough times, please try to give up something. It could be your lunch, or the ice cream you crave for every evening, or that extra two minutes you spend in the shower. That's the message the top civil servant of Churu district in Rajasthan has been spreading with a unique initiative called "Give Up Something".

The message is being propounded to encourage people to make small sacrifices to save resources and focus on what's essential instead of harping on the non-essential luxuries that they are used to.

Churu collector Sandesh Nayak said the initiative, which was introduced three days back, has received a good response from district administration officials as well as people of the district, activists and others.

"It is the time for us to give up something without which we can sustain ourselves. We should save resources and should use available things judiciously at this time of crisis. Therefore I took the initiative to give up my lunch during the lockdown period and motivated others to give up whatever they can," he told PTI.

"We are making efforts to ensure that nobody goes to sleep hungry and people should understand that things which can be avoided at this time should be avoided," he said.

The collector said that when public movement was restricted due to lockdown and curfew, people used to call him and other officials complaining that fruits, chocolates, specific vegetable, ice creams were not available in the market and that they were craving for such things.

People themselves should have dropped such items from the list of daily requirements, he said.

"I asked people to give up things without which they can sustain," he said.

Apart from resources, the collector said that he has also appealed to people to give up addictions during the lockdown period.

The initiative inspired Rajeev Birda, a veteran of an expedition to the Antarctica, to announce he will auction his prized collection of Antarctica T-shirts, gloves, masks and other memorabilia, and donate to the proceeds to the state government's fight against coronavirus.

Several people have decided to skip one meal a day during the lockdown period, another official said.

One of them, Birbal Nokhwal of Ghaghu, has also decided to give up his favourite potato, while an Ayurveda doctor Liladhar Sharma decided to cut his diet in half, as well as limit ghee, oil, chillies, spices, milk and tea from the whole family's meals.

Gandhian activist L D Joshi renounced his morning breakfast and milk, saying he will help the helpless with the money saved by this.

In the face of coronavirus pandemic, Churu residents sacrifice habits with 'Give up Something' campaign

The President of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the ambassador of the Dominican Republic, José Singer told WION that an urgent global response is needed to tackle the global coronavirus crisis. He added that the UNSC has an important role to play. The Dominican Republic is the chair of the council for the current month and decides the agenda of the top United Nations body.

Speaking from New York, Ambassador Singer said, "COVID-19 is racing its way around the world. There’s growing concern about the unprecedented magnitude of its outbreak globally and its impact on international peace and security."

"We need an urgent, coordinated, united and global response. No country can fight this alone and we must practice solidarity and kindness, now more than ever", he further said.

The UNSC met for the first time last week to discuss the crisis via video conference under the Presidentship of the Dominican Republic. On April 2, nine countries had requested the UNSC to meet urgently in the face of growing coronavirus escalation.

Asked about the role of UNSC in dealing with the crisis, Ambassador Singer said,"With a pandemic that is strangling the world's economy and putting an enormous strain on health resources, international cooperation is paramount. And the Security Council has an important role to play".

Hinting at more meetings of the body, he claimed that Thursday's meeting "was our first step on our discussions around COVID-19 and it will keep on discussing it, including through thematic issues and country-specific discussion" and "one thing is sure, SC members understand the seriousness of this issue, precisely when people living in conflict context are deeply vulnerable to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic."

Thursday's meeting saw United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres briefing the Council about the impact of COVID-19. The UNSG said that this is the "fight of a generation" while highlighting eight risks emerging out of the crisis. These include the "threat of terrorism" which "remains alive" and "weaknesses and lack of preparedness" exposed by the pandemic which may "provide a window onto how a bio-terrorist attack might unfold".

Exclusive: 'UNSC has an important role to play' during COVID-19 crisis, president José Singer tells WION

The United Kingdom is one of the hardest-hit countries by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a recent press conference by Home Secretary Priti Patel, a lot of data was released.

She claimed that crime in the country has fallen by 21 per cent, while cases on online fraud and underage sexual exploitation have gone up.

According to Patel, people across the country have been conned, and the national loss is expected to be worth £1.8million.

“Fraudsters are exploiting coronavirus as a hook for new acquisitive crimes with losses to victims already exceeding £1.8million”, the Home Secretary thundered to the nation.

The UK is nearing the 10,000 mark in terms of recorded deaths. The Prime Minister Boris Johnson who had tested positive for the virus is now showing signs of recovery.

Recently, the UK police were criticised for using extreme measures in enforcing the nationwide lockdown. She said that the powers “will be reviewed”.

Patel also added that over 400 suspects of domestic abuse were arrested over the last two weeks.

There is no clarity on the timeline for lifting restrictions: “None of us can stand here today... and speculate in terms of when restrictions might move and when they will be lifted”.

While referring to the increasing cases of acts related to cyber pedophilia, she said, “the perpetrators of sickening online child abuse are seeking to exploit the fact that more and more young people and children are at home and online. And in the last week the National Domestic Abuse Helpline reported a 120 per cent increase in the number of calls it received in one 24-hour period”.

The Home Secretary further warned the public against stringent police action in case people were spotted breaking lockdown rules. “To anyone still refusing to do the right thing is clear. If you don't play your part, our selfless police - who are out there risking their own lives to save others - will be unafraid to act”, she said

On a lighter note, she extended gratitude to emergency workers.

“I’d like to thank them - our police officers and staff who are working tirelessly to keep us safe, for engaging with the public so constructively, to encourage everyone to do the right thing and avoid the need to use these powers”.

COVID-19: Ajay Devgn condemns violence against doctors

Almost half of private care homes for the elderly in Scotland have suspected cases of coronavirus, many reports claim.

According to Scottish Care, a trading body, almost 30 per cent of the staff allocated for caring for the elderly is now absent.

Most care homes have no equipment and the number of deaths continue to rise.

There were many reports that claimed that the elderly have been “abandoned” by the government, and that their deaths are not being accurately reported.

Also read: Elderly may have to self-isolate for the entire year, or until a vaccine is ready

The BBC reported that a “postcode lottery” is going on whereby random and limited localities are receiving care for the elderly.

Scotland currently has 36,000 care home beds, and these are mostly within the ambit of Scottish Care. SC chief Donald Macaskill told BBC that they were facing an "unprecedented challenge on every front".

So far many elderly people have died in care homes in Dumbarton, North Lanarkshire and Tranent.

According to information gathered by Scottish Care, almost half of all care homes have at least one suspected case of COVID-19.

"80% of people in care homes are there for later stage of life care. It is a place where there are, sadly, frequents deaths and we have seen that older people generally are more vulnerable to the virus”, Macaskill said.

Many researches across the globe have reiterated the need of giving special care to the elderly, as they are the most vulnerable demographic. As peaks in many countries have shown, old folks, especially those with underlying conditions of the heart and kidney are not likely to survive the infection.

A statement by the European Union chief has rung in similar sentiments, but tiptoeing on precautionary measures.

Ursula von der Leyen recently said that elderly people may have to be kept isolated for the entire year for effective protection.

Also read: Elderly may have to self-isolate for the entire year, or until a vaccine is ready The BBC reported that a “postcode lottery” is going on whereby random and limited localities are receiving care for the elderly. The Council of Ministers, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will resume work at their ministries from Monday, a day before the scheduled end of the lockdown.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 25 in order to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

PM Modi, on Saturday, held a video conference with the chief ministers of various states -- where most of them urged the prime minister to extend the lockdown.

To this end, senior officials entitled to official transports, i.e., from the rank of Joint Secretary and above, will report in as usual. A third of all essential staff has to be present.

Junior officials will continue to work on rotation basis. Each ministry has also been told to plan for post-lockdown and come up with ideas to kick-start the economy.

PM Modi has, in addition, urged that social distancing protocols be followed.

Sources say the likely extension to the lockdown will come with certain exemptions to jumpstart the economy -- including modification of laws to facilitate sale of farm produce.

The centre will also issue directions to restart the construction industry in a phased manner, sources said.

No decision has been taken, as yet, on allowing flights, domestic and international, as well as trains to re-start operations after Tuesday.

India has reported 7,529 cases of novel coronavirus infection and 242 deaths.

The mayor of Moscow urged residents of the capital to brace for a "serious test" from the new coronavirus and said the city would introduce a system of permits for movement to help enforce a lockdown, as infection numbers shot up across Russia.

The country reported 1,786 new cases, bringing its tally to 11,917, even as Moscow and many other regions neared the end of their second week in a state of lockdown aimed at halting the contagion. Ninety-four people have died, authorities say.

In the bustling capital of more than 12.5 million that has become the focus of the Russian outbreak, new cases not only jumped 1,124 to almost 8,000, but the number of patients being hospitalised has also doubled in recent days, one official said.

"I can tell you for sure that there has been no peak yet whatsoever. We are at the foothills of the peak, not even in the middle,"Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, said in an interview with Russia's RIA news agency published on Friday.

"I can only say that a serious test lies before us and we need to be preparing for it," he said.

In a televised address on Friday, Sobyanin said the city would gradually begin introducing a system of passes for residents wanting to move around the city so that authorities could enforce the shutdown.

Residents in Moscow have been told to stay at home unless they need to make essential trips to buy food or access urgent medical care. Police said on Thursday they had already caught 400 people ignoring the order and that they faced small fines.

"The situation started to get worse from Monday. The number of seriously ill patients with pneumonia is growing," Sobyanin said, adding that he felt he had "no choice" but to introduce a permit system.

"Especially when we see that unfortunately not everyone is following the restrictions that have been set."

In Moscow, the influx of patients is already pushing hospitals and ambulances towards their limit, said Deputy Mayor Anastasiya Rakova.

Russia recorded far fewer cases of the new coronavirus than many Western European countries in the early stages of the outbreak, but its official case tally began to rise sharply this month.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned countries on Friday to be cautious about lifting restrictions introduced to curb the spread of the new coronavirus and voiced alarm it was taking hold in Africa.

The United Nations agency would like to see an easing, but at the same time "lifting restrictions could lead to a deadly resurgence," WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference.

He said there had been a "welcome slowing" of epidemics in some European countries - Italy, Germany, Spain and France - but there had been an "alarming acceleration" elsewhere including community transmission in 16 countries of Africa.

In a first, Apple and Google are teaming up to create tracing technology that will help in slowing down the spread of COVID-19 globally.

This will be achieved by letting users log other phones that they may have come in contact with.

United States is looking into extension of H1B visas for Indians amid COVID-19 pandemic

The United States government could impose visa sanctions on countries that do not accept people returning from the US, President Donald Trump asserted on Friday.

Trump wants to ensure “the repatriation of foreign nationals who violate the laws of the United States”.

This comes in the backdrop the pandemic which has now eclipsed United States and hit it harder than European countries.

The revelation came to light in a memorandum addressed to the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

It further states that Pompeo is expected to "initiate a plan to impose the visa sanctions" if the Homeland Security Department determines a country not accepting returnees is delaying or impeding operations "necessary to respond to the ongoing pandemic" in the next seven days.

However, no countries were named in particular.

On March 21, new border rules were implemented by the Trump administration in purview of the coronavirus pandemic.

As part of these new rules, US officials have the power to remove people by circumventing the usual immigration proceedings.

Trump administration to enforce visa sanctions on countries not accepting deportees

A new report claims that the number of coronavirus infections in the United States will spike during the summer if lockdown measures are not properly enforced.

The New York Times reported that if the stay-at-home orders are retracted before 30 days, the virus could resurge.

The estimated death toll would further jump to 200,000 in case the lockdown measures are withdrawn too quickly in a bid to resume economic activity.

The NYT had received the estimate from the Departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and Health and Human Services.

The president has claimed that he is unaware of any such projections.

Recently, Trump drew flak for tweeting “Happy Good Friday” while the rest of the country mourns, as the US is expected to overtake Italy in terms of the number of reported deaths.

He additionally claimed that the country is headed towards the infection peak, with expected loss of lives projected at 100,000.

The report also claimed that if lockdown measures weren’t enforced, the death toll would have jumped to 300,000. The measures in question include shutting down institutions like schools and practicing social distancing.

As of now, 25 per cent of the US is working from home. And the NYT is very confident that the number will shoot up to 200,000 if the restrictions are eased before 30 days.

Days after the coronavirus crisis took hold in Pakistan, Aamir Gill, a cleaner and member of the country's Christian underclass, was fired with no warning or severance by the wealthy family he had helped look after.

Many other Christians -- who live a hand-to-mouth existence in the Islamic country -- have also been laid off and, with little access to government help, are wondering how they will survive.

"We were already untouchables and now due to corona, rich people think the poor might bring it into their homes," Gill told AFP ahead of an uncertain Easter.

Along with two other servants, he worked at a large house in the capital -- mostly to clean up after parties.

"I have no idea how many bedrooms it had but it was big," explained Gill, who lives in Islamabad's Christian slums in a cramped one-room home with his family of four.

"My kids asked me for new Easter dresses and shoes but I have told them we are not going to have Easter this year."

Christians -- who comprise roughly two percent of the population -- occupy one of the lowest rungs in class-obsessed Pakistan.

Most work menial jobs without contracts as street sweepers, cleaners and cooks and live in crowded, multi-generational households where social distancing is all but impossible.

Christians in Pakistan with smartphones have tuned into online services while others have joined neighbours on their rooftops, where sermons are yelled and hymns are sung in unison.

Italy has planned to increase testing for the coronavirus and use voluntary contact tracing whenever it exits from a lockdown that's currently in effect until at least May 3.

There will be mandatory blood tests to set up a system of ''immunity passports,'' Italy's special commissioner for the virus emergency Domenico Arcuri told SKYTG 24.

The voluntary contact tracing mobile apps will allow people to know if they have come in contact with someone who is positive for the virus. Then they can be tested in an effort to limit further spread of the virus.

The blood tests identifying anti-bodies are still being developed. Virologists have cautioned the tests will not prove immunity but will give a snapshot whether a person has been in contact with the virus.

If an anti-body test is positive, more testing would be needed to know if the virus is still active. The goal of public health officials is to determine how long immunity to the virus lasts.
