Global airline industry's passenger revenues have dropped by $314 billion in 2020, due to the outbreak of COVID-19 -- 25 per cent more than previously forecast.

According to the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) updated analysis showed on Tuesday, the data represents the impact of the severe domestic restrictions lasting over three months and some on international travel extending beyond that time period.

On March 24, IATA estimated that $252 billion will be the amount of revenues that could be lost in a scenario with severe travel restrictions lasting three months. The updated figures reflect a significant deepening of the crisis since then.

The pandemic has brought air travel to a standstill, with many airline fleets grounded and no visibility on when travel restrictions will be eased.

Besides, the full-year passenger demand is expected to go down by 48 per cent compared to 2019 due to the overall economic developments.

"The economic shock of the COVID-19 crisis is expected to be at its most severe in Q2 when GDP is expected to shrink by 6 per cent (by comparison, GDP shrank by 2 per cent at the height of the Global Financial Crisis)," IATA said in a statement.

"Passenger demand closely follows GDP progression. The impact of reduced economic activity in Q2 alone would result in an 8 per cent fall in passenger demand in the third quarter."

As per the statement, travel restrictions will deepen the impact of recession on demand for travel.

It said: "The most severe impact is expected to be in Q2. As of early April, the number of flights globally was down 80 per cent compared to 2019 in large part owing to severe travel restrictions imposed by governments to fight the spread of the virus.

"Domestic markets could still see the start of an upturn in demand beginning in the third quarter in a first stage of lifting travel restrictions. International markets, however, will be slower to resume as it appears likely that governments will retain these travel restrictions longer."

Furthermore, IATA has urged governments to provide airlines with liquidity urgently to help them to survive the crisis, warning that many will go bust within weeks unless they receive help. It said it expects domestic markets to be the first to reopen, as has happened in China, with international routes following gradually.

A phased return of international flights would still be problematic for airline finances because most carriers obtain the bulk of their revenue from international routes, IATA said.

Mobile telecom masts in Britain were attacked and engineers abused as the conspiracy theory -- that says 5G masts help spread the novel coronavirus -- spread across social media.

Scientists, phone companies and the government, however, say the theory is completely untrue and without any basis in fact. Britain's cabinet officer minister, Michael Gove, and senior health officials have described the 5G conspiracy theory as dangerous fake news that could threaten connectivity at a time when it is needed more than ever.

Britain reported multiple cases of phone masts being targetted in suspected arson attacks over the Easter weekend -- in England, Wales and Scotland. One of the targetted sites provides mobile connectivity to a hospital in Birmingham.

In addition, Britain's biggest free-to-air broadcaster ITV came under fire on Tuesday after one of its leading presenters said no one knew whether the theory was true or not.

"What I don`t accept is mainstream media immediately slapping that down as not true when they don`t know it`s not true," Eamonn Holmes, a veteran presenter on ITV, said on the "This Morning" show on Monday.

Britain's media regulator Ofcom said it had received 419 complaints following the comment and was assessing the programme in question as a priority.

Meanwhile, BT, the owner of the EE mobile network, said 22 of its sites were attacked over the Easter holiday, while Vodafone said 20 of its UK masts had been targetted by arsonists.
Vodafone UK Chief Executive Nick Jeffery said one of the sites attacked provided connections to the "Nightingale" hospital set up to treat COVID-19 patients in Birmingham, central England.

British broadcasters such as ITV, the BBC and Comcasts' Sky are regulated by Ofcom in order to guarantee that they meet certain standards.

With much of the world living in lockdown, the spread of the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, that was first detected in China late last year is beginning to slow in some places.

While a safe, effective vaccine is still more than a year away, researchers are rushing to repurpose existing drugs and non-drug therapies as well as testing promising experimental drugs that were already in clinical trials.

Even moderately effective therapies or combinations could dramatically reduce the crushing demand on hospitals and intensive care units, changing the nature of the risk the new pathogen represents to populations and healthcare systems.

More than 70 vaccine candidates are also in development around the world, with at least five in preliminary testing in people. Here are some of the drugs, vaccines and other therapies in development:

*DRUGS*

REMDESIVIR - GILEAD SCIENCES

Antiviral drug, originally developed to combat RNA viruses including respiratory syncytial virus. At least 13 trials underway in China, Europe and the U.S. with preliminary results from two Chinese trials expected as soon as April 2020. A February assessment by the WHO flagged this candidate as the most promising for battling COVID-19.

CAVEATS: Initial data are expected to come from studies of patients with relatively severe COVID-19. Because antivirals work best when patients are healthier, those results may show limited effectiveness.

STATUS: Repurposed Experimental

EARLY RESULTS: 0-3 months

HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE/CHLOROQUINE

Malaria drug also believed to have antiviral activity. Blocked SARS-CoV-2 entry into cells in an in-vitro experiment. In one small French study, some COVID-19 patients showed improvements but there was no way to know if the drug was the reason. Results published in April from another study in France and one in China found no benefit in patients treated with the drug. Dozens more clinical studies are underway around the world.

Britain’s intelligence community has reportedly warned China about the adverse consequences of lifting the country's lockdown.

The warning comes after China's northeast Heilongjiang province which borders Russia, has become the new hotspot of the virus.

Health authorities on Sunday reported the highest number of new daily cases in nearly six weeks, driven by infected travellers from overseas.

UK's spy agency MI6 alerted China that a rise in imported cases could spark a second wave of COVID-19 and push the country back into a state of near paralysis.

A total of 108 new COVID-19 cases were reported in mainland China on Sunday, up from 99 a day earlier and marking the highest number of cases since 143 infections were reported on March 5.

Previously, MI6 had informed British ministers that China was significantly under-reporting the number of coronavirus cases and deaths in January and February, echoing similar briefings given by the CIA to the White House.

Meanwhile, Britain's domestic intelligence agency MI5 also said that it believes Birtain needs to reassess its relationship with China after the coronavirus crisis subsides and consider if tighter controls are needed over high-tech and other strategic industries.

Second wave of COVID-19 can 'paralyse' China, warns British intelligence

France on Sunday reported a drop in COVID-19 deaths on the previous 24 hours, with the total toll from the coronavirus epidemic in the country now 14,393, the health ministry said.

It said that there were 315 deaths in hospital over the last day, compared with 345 the day earlier. The total toll includes those who have died in nursing homes.

France had on April 6 recorded 605 deaths in hospitals, its highest daily number so far.

For the fourth consecutive day in a row, the number of patients in intensive care fell with 35 fewer patients, making a total of 6,845 people needing such treatment.

The health ministry reaffirmed that a "plateau" appeared to have been reached but warned the situation remained serious despite the slightly improving data.

"We must stay vigilant as the hospital and intensive care services are taking in very many patients," it said.

France has been in lockdown since March 17 in a bid to slow the spread of the epidemic, with only essential trips allowed.

French President Emmanuel Macron is due on Monday to address the nation for a third time during the crisis and is expected to announce that the lockdown will be extended beyond its current April 15 expiration date.

Macron will have to steer a careful course amid the tentative signs of improvement, telling people they must still stay at home while giving indications about how the confinement measures might be relaxed.

The Union government on Sunday said that guidelines on exemptions during lockdown were not being followed properly in some parts of the country and vehicles carrying essential and non-essential items were being detained by police that could lead to potential shortage of commodities.

In a communication to chief secretaries of all states and union territories, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said it has come to the notice that in some parts of the country, the guidelines and clarifications on exemptions given to people and services are not being implemented in letter and spirit during the ongoing 21 days lockdown.

Bhalla said, specifically, trucks carrying essential and non-essential goods are being detained, workers needed for operation of manufacturing units of essential goods, and other exempted categories are not getting authorisations/passes for their movement during lockdown.

The restrictions, with regard to activities specifically permitted by the home ministry, have the potential of creating shortages of essential commodities, he said. Many researches across the globe have reiterated the need of giving special care to the elderly, as they are the most vulnerable demographic. As peaks in many countries have shown, old folks, especially those with underlying conditions of the heart and kidney are not likely to survive the infection.

A statement by the European Union chief has rung in similar sentiments, but tiptoeing on precautionary measures.

Ursula von der Leyen recently said that elderly people may have to be kept isolated for the entire year for effective protection.

“Without a vaccine, we have to limit as much as possible contact with the elderly,” she said to a Germany daily Bild.

“I know it’s difficult and that isolation is a burden, but it is a question of life or death, we have to remain disciplined and patient”, Leyen added.

“Children and young people will enjoy more freedom of movement earlier than elderly people and those with pre-existing medical conditions,” she said.

The palette is expected to include red, orange, and green zones. The 'red zone' will clearly represent the hardest hit areas, or hotspots. The 'orange zone' will include places with a lot of cases, but not enough to trigger a complete shutoff. And lastly, 'green zones' would most probably include places with the least number of cases

Red Zones

In the red zones, a complete lockdown will continue to be enforced.

These are districts with a sizeable number of cases. And also the ones that have already been declared hotspots by the government.

Red zones will be sealed. And no non-essential movement will be permitted.

Orange Zones

The orange zones are likely to be districts that initially reported a cluster of cases - but have since flattened the curve.

The likes of Bhilwara in Rajasthan could feature in this list.

There will be a limited lockdown in orange zones, with partial operation of public transport.

Haryana has already moved ahead with this plan.

Austria's state rail operator OBB is putting up to 10,000 workers, around a quarter of its staff, on short-time work due to the coronavirus, radio station ORF reported on Saturday.

"Short-time working has started with OBB as of April 1, while corresponding agreements between the works council and the management of the respective companies are in progress or have been concluded," an OBB spokesman told Reuters.

The number of 10,000 workers going into short-time work is a preliminary estimate, he said. "At the moment we are a long way away from this figure."

The spokesman said the measures had been introduced because of a massive reduction in passenger numbers since the coronavirus outbreak.

The company, which employs around 42,000 people, has seen passenger numbers fall by more than 80 per cent in recent weeks, he said.
