A sudden wave of scorching heat in central South America towards the end of the winter season was made 100 times more likely by climate change, according to a new study published on Tuesday (Oct 10).

"While many people have pointed to El Nino to explain the South America heat wave, this analysis has shown that climate change is the primary driver of the heat," said Lincoln Muniz Alves, a researcher at the Brazil National Institute for Space Research who participated in the study conducted by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group.

The temperatures in the southern hemisphere shot up to above 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit) at the peak of the winter season in August and September, breaking records.

The research conducted by WWA found that while the naturally occurring El Nino warming phenomenon was partly to be blamed, climate change was mainly behind driving temperatures up between 1.4 and 4.3 degrees.

A team of 12 researchers examined 10 hottest winter days over a region encompassing Paraguay, central Brazil and regions of Bolivia and Argentina in order to study the connection between extreme weather and climate change.

"The scientists found that these extreme heat episodes in South America outside the summer months would have been extremely unlikely without human-caused climate change," read a statement on the study.

"Heat episodes like these will become even more frequent and extreme if greenhouse gas emissions are not rapidly reduced to net zero."

In Sao Paulo, which is the biggest city in Latin America, the heatwave claimed the lives of four people.

"Heat kills, particularly in spring, before people are acclimatized to it," said Julie Arrighi, a director at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre.

"Temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in early spring are incredibly extreme and while we are aware of just four heat-related fatalities, it's likely the true number is much higher."

Climate crisis behind extreme heat during winters in South America, says study

Climate Change is dangerous, and this unfortunately is old news. Many of us care and try to incorporate so-called "green" or sustainable practices into our lives. Many continue to rebuff the climate change.

Whether you're part of the former group or the latter, this piece of information will interest and maybe even sadden you. Recent research has found that climate change will affect beer, making it expensive and potentially change the taste. Here's all you need to know.

Losing the taste

You may be wondering how can climate change affect the taste of beer.

Beer is the third-most popular drink after water and tea. The globally popular alcoholic drink gets its distinctive taste and smell from hops, a flower, whose quantity and quantity will be affected by climate change, reports The Guardian.

A study published in the journal Nature Communications predicts that until and unless farmers adapt to hotter and drier weather, hop yields in Europe's growing regions will fall by around 4 to 18 per cent by 2050. It also forecasts that the alpha acids in hops — responsible for the taste — will fall by 20-31 per cent.

Study co-author Miroslav Trnka, a scientist at the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, says: "Beer drinkers will definitely see the climate change, either in the price tag or the quality."

"That seems to be inevitable from our data," says Trnka, adding that "across the pubs of Europe, the most frequent debate except weather and politics is about the … beer".

Climate Change is not gender-neutral

As per the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), climate change, though harmful for everyone, affects people disproportionately.

Its report — the first to examine climate change and how it refers to reproductive health, found that only a third of the nations recognise the disproportionate impact of the climate crisis on women and girls.

Research by UNFPA and Queen Mary University of London released on Tuesday found that of the 119 countries with published national plans on tackling the climate crisis, only 38 include access to contraception, and maternal and newborn health services and just 15 make any reference to violence against women.

"Climate is setting us back on the fight to gender equality. Our point would be to make sure that climate policy recognises the differential impact on women and takes it into account in the design of policy," said study co-author, UNFPA adviser on population and development Angela Baschieri.

Your favourite beer might not taste the same in the coming years. Thanks to climate change

New research suggests that our climate some nearly 13,000 years ago might have been severely changed due to a cosmic intervention. A global team of researchers has presented its case in four peer-reviewed papers to study the substantially disputed Younger Dryas (YD) impact hypothesis.

According to the studies, it was a comet that led to the plantation of the first seeds of agriculture in Syria, a necessary adaptation to improve the chances of survival.

It was also after the fragments of this comet slammed into Earth’s atmosphere that the climate drastically changed since the plants and animals they relied on disappeared.

What is YD?

Younger Dryas was a cooling period between roughly 12,900 and 11,600 years ago which disrupted the Earth’s warming trend in the Northern Hemisphere. This period was marked by a rather sudden, severe, and lengthy interruption to the Earth’s climate.

What did the team find?

The team’s research is based on their analysis of the sediment layers from the Neolithic site Abu Hureyra, which was excavated in the 1970s before being submerged under Lake Assad. Notably, Abu Hureyra is said to be the earliest evidence of a shift from hunter-gathering to farming phase.

“We present substantial new quantitative evidence and interpretations supporting the hypothesis that comet fragments triggered near-global shifts in climate ~12,800 years ago, and one airburst destroyed the Abu Hureyra village,” the researchers wrote.

According to the researchers, sediment layers revealed a number of factors which included types of plants before and after the YD climate change. The data also included “changes in building architecture, diet, the early stages of persistent cultivation of domestic-type grains and legumes,” said the authors.

The also shows the “initial penning of livestock, marking the beginning of sustained agriculture and animal domestication.” The team also found shock-fractured quartz grains that were not only consistent with the impact but also evidence of a massive firestorm.

“Shocked quartz is well known and is probably the most robust proxy for a cosmic impact,” Earth scientist James Kennett of the University of California Santa Barbara said in a statement.

“For the first time, we propose that shock metamorphism in quartz grains exposed to an atomic detonation is essentially the same as during a low-altitude, lower-pressure cosmic airburst,” he added.

The second study identified the shock-fractured quartz at the site’s sediment layer from the beginning of the YD period. Some quartz grains in this layer were similar to those found in nuclear explosions and Meteor Crater.

Most of these shock-fractured quartz had been exposed to temperatures of at least 1713 degrees Celsius or higher, said the study.

The third study found small diamonds, special crystals, and small balls made of silica and iron in the sediment layer from the beginning of the YD period some of which could have only been formed under higher temperature or pressure conditions that no human had the ability to produce at the time.

The researchers in the final study present evidence that historically there is a direct connection between cosmic impacts, environmental shifts and changes in societies. Therefore, the team proposes that this major shift came due to the disintegration of a 100-kilometre-wide comet.

Nearly 13,000 years ago a comet impact may have sparked major change in climate

Japan issued a tsunami advisory for some coastal regions early on Monday. The advisory, as per reports, was issued after a series of shallow earthquakes in the Izu islands in the Pacific Ocean. However, later the warning was lifted.

A Reuters report citing Japan's national broadcaster NHK said that the tsunami had already arrived in some island areas, where waves as high as 60 centimetres (24 inches) were reported.

Tsunami waves

The advisory was issued after an earthquake near Torishima Island at 5:25 am JST on Monday (8:25 pm GMT, Sunday), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

As per figures by the United States Geological Survey, the quake measured 4.9 on the Richter scale.

The US agency also reported a series of shallow quakes in the Izu islands. The strongest one, a 5.4 magnitude tremor, was recorded at 5:17 am (2117 GMT Sunday) around 551 kilometres south of Shimoda.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, 280 kilometres (170 miles) south of Tokyo, Hachijojima island was hit by tsunami waves of height 60 centimetres (24 inches). Smaller tsunami waves of 40cm and 20 cm were recorded in the western Kochi prefecture and southern Miyazaki prefecture, respectively.

Seismologists from JMA, as per an AFP report, said there were no immediate reports of damage from the minor waves generated.

However, despite that, Tateyama city of Chiba, located near Tokyo, had urged residents in coastal areas to evacuate after the advisory.

Danger!

During a press conference, JMA official Toshihiro Shimoyama warned that "it is dangerous in the sea and near the coast".

Japan warns of danger in sea and near coast following a series of shallow earthquakes in Izu islands

Climate change and global warming are words that are tossed, often carelessly, in our everyday conversations. So much so that the real danger for humankind they encapsulate is often overlooked and forgotten. Findings of a new study may be another wake-up call for us to sit and seriously think about something that can jeopardise our very existence on the only planet we call home.

The study, as reported by The Guardian, is the first to calculate the global cost directly attributable to human-caused global warming. It reportedly said that we paid an average cost of USD 140 billion each year between 2000 and 2019 as a result of global warming. The latest data reveals that the cost was USD 280 billion in the year 2022. Due to lack of data from many countries, especially from low-income countries, means that the number may be much higher. Also, aspects such a climate cost incurred due to decline in crop yields and sea level rise was not included.

The study has also found that over two decades, 1.2 billion people have been affected by climate crisis.

Two-third of the damage costs were due to lives that were lost. The third was due to destruction and other assets being destroyed.

According to the researchers, their methods can be used for calculating funding that was needed for loss and damage fund which was established at the United Nations' climate summit in 2022. The fund is intended for recovery from extreme weather events in poorer countries.

“The headline number is $140bn a year and, first of all, that’s already a big number,” said Prof Ilan Noy as quoted by The Guardian. Prof Noy is from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He carried out the study with colleague Rebecca Newman.

“Second, when you compare it to the standard quantification of the cost of climate change [using computer models], it seems those quantifications are underestimating the impact of climate change.”

Noy noted that there was no data of people killed or of economic damage caused due several extreme weather events.

“That indicates our headline number of $140bn is a significant understatement,” he said.

As an example, he said that heatwave death data was available only in case of Europe.

“We have no idea how many people died from heatwaves in all of sub-Saharan Africa.”

Climate change is costing us USD 16 million per hour: Study

From record-breaking temperatures to extreme downpours to deadly tremors, 2023 has been the year of natural disasters. Why have these disasters become so frequent? Are we heading towards a mega natural calamity? Here's what Priyanka Sharma has to say on Gravitas Plus.

Gravitas Plus: Is a mega natural calamity waiting to happen?

Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in France and a symbol of the Alps, has seen a decrease in its height over the past two years, according to new research reported the BBC. This decline has been attributed to the impact of climate change on the region.

The latest measurements of Mont Blanc's peak indicate that its height now stands at 4,805.59 metres, which is 2.22 metres shorter than the measurement recorded in 2021.

These periodic measurements are conducted by climate scientists to monitor the effects of climate change on the Alps.

Jean des Garets, the Chief Geometer involved in the research, told the BBC that the reduced height might be due to lower levels of rainfall during the preceding summer.

Des Garets stressed that Mont Blanc's summit is dynamic, with its altitude and position constantly changing by as much as five meters. He speculates that in another two years, the mountain's height might differ significantly.

While some experts agree with the recent findings, claiming that Mont Blanc has been losing approximately 13 centimetres in height annually, others highlight the complexity of the issue. The most recent survey was conducted by a team from the Haute-Savoie regional administration, using a drone for precision.

In comparison, the summit's height in 2021 was recorded as 4,807.81 meters, almost a meter less than the measurement taken in 2017. Denis Borel, one of the surveyors involved, underscores the significant loss of ice and snow, approximately 3,500 cubic metres, which is equivalent to the volume of an Olympic swimming pool. Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in France and a symbol of the Alps, has seen a decrease in its height over the past two years, according to new research reported the BBC.

Also watch this report In comparison, the summit's height in 2021 was recorded as 4,807.81 meters, almost a meter less than the measurement taken in 2017. Denis Borel, one of the surveyors involved, underscores the significant loss of ice and snow, approximately 3,500 cubic metres, which is equivalent to the volume of an Olympic swimming pool. This loss is considered substantial in comparison to historical measurements. Climate change impact Climatologists assert that while there is evidence of a slight decline, around 15 to 20 centimetres since 2001, in Mont Blanc's snowy summit, it would require approximately 50 years of measurements to draw definitive conclusions about global warming's influence at such high altitudes, around 4,800 metres. We are nowhere close to defeat climate change. A new report suggests that world is rather close to crossing a major warming threshold, leaving scientists concerned. In one third of 2023, the average global temperature remained at least 1.5ºC higher than pre-industrial levels, as per the report.

Staying below that mark long-term is widely crucial to avert the dangerous effects of climate change. 2023 is already on track to be the hottest year on record, and 2024 could be even hotter.

The report is based on BBC’s recent analysis on climate change. The latest findings come after record September temperatures and a summer of extreme weather events across much of the world.

Where are we currently, in terms of global warming threshold?

In December 2015, world leader gathered in Paris and signed an agreement to keep the long-term rise in global temperatures this century below 2 C and to make every effort to keep it under 1.5 C.

The agreed limits refer to the difference between global average temperatures now and what they were in the pre-industrial period, between 1850 and 1900 - before the widespread use of fossil fuels.

Breaching this Paris threshold doesn’t mean going over it for a day or a week but going beyond this across for 20 or 30 days-year average.

This long-term average warming figure currently sits at around 1.1C to 1.2C.

But the more often 1.5C is breached for individual days, the closer the world gets to breaching this mark in the longer term.

The first time this breach happened was for a few days in December 2015. Since then the limit has been repeatedly broken, typically for short periods.

Where are we heading now?

The recent BBC analysis shows we could breach the global long-term warming limit soon. The data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service shows that up to October 2, around 86 days in 2023 have been over 1.5 C warmer that the pre-industrial average. This beats the 2016 record well before the end of the year.

Days when the temperature difference has exceeded 1.5C continued into September, with some more than 1.8C above the pre-industrial average.

The month as a whole was 1.75C above the pre-industrial level, and the year to date is around 1.4C above the 1850-1900 average, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

While 2023 is "on track" to become the warmest year on record, it is not expected to breach the 1.5C warming threshold as a global average across the full 12 months.

More cities are being built in high flood risk areas. A recent study found that settlements in flood prone areas increased by a whooping 122 percent over the three decades from 1985.the percentage rise might not seem substantial but it represents an enormous area because of how quickly human settlements have expanded globally since 1985.

Climate change is threatening Yemen’s sea turtles. Warmer beaches and rising temperature have skewed the sex ratio among these turtles. According to experts, this may lead to the extinction of local turtles. Due to the temperature rise, more female turtles are being born. With sands made hotter by human-induced climate change, eggs are rarely yielding male turtles, creating a major gap in sex ratio.

OPEC + leaders emphasise investment for stable energy transition

Pope Francis is warning followers around the world about climate change. The 86-year-old head of the catholic church is urging rich nations to make profound changes to tackle climate crisis. On wednesday, the Pope issued an official declaration saying that the effects of climate change are “already irreversible” and devastating to humanity.

Pope Francis on Wednesday (Oct 4) urged participating countries of the upcoming COP28 climate talks to agree over binding policies for phasing out of fossil fuels. He warned that the world "is collapsing" because of global warming.

Pope Francis published a follow-up eight years after his landmark thesis that spoke about devastation of manmade climate change. He warned that some damage was 'already irreversible'.

"With the passage of time, I have realised that our responses have not been adequate, while the world in which we live is collapsing and may be nearing the breaking point," he wrote in the 12-page letter.

Pope said that the UN climate talks in Dubai that open on November 30 "can represent a change of direction" if participating countries agreed on binding policies for a transition from fossil fuels to clean energy such as wind and solar.

The Pope wrote that only a real commitment for change "can enable international politics to recover its credibility"

Pope's 200-page encyclical titled "Laudato Si" ("Praise Be To You") came out in 2015. It was akin to global call to arms for protection of Earth. The thesis was widely discussed and debated upon and was even taken note of in scientific journals.

Just months after the thesis came out, there was a breakthrough in UN climate talks held in Paris. Nearly every nation ono Earth committed to control global warming "well below" two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

However, just last month, the UN warned that the world was not track to hit the goal. There are predictions that the year 2023 would be the hottest year in human history.

Pope Francis said in "Laudate Deum" (Praise God), the document released on Wednesday, that he hopes COP28 will allow for a decisive acceleration of energy transition, with effective commitments subject to ongoing monitoring"

He referenced concerns about the UN talks being held in oil-rich United Arab Emirates, noting that while it was a "great exporter of fossil fuels" it also made "significant investments" in renewable energy sources.

"To say that there is nothing to hope for would be suicidal, for it would mean exposing all humanity, especially the poorest, to the worst impacts of climate change," wrote Francis.

In the document, Pope described "certain dismissive and scarcely reasonable opinions that I encounter, even within the Catholic Church".

"Despite all attempts to deny, conceal, gloss over or relativise the issue, the signs of climate change are here and increasingly evident," he wrote.

In Wednesday's text, he said that "regrettably, the climate crisis is not exactly a matter that interests the great economic powers, whose concern is with the greatest profit".

He also repeated a call for changes in the "irresponsible lifestyle" of rich countries, and said relying on technological innovation is not enough.

Pope urges climate action in COP28, decries 'irresponsible' Western lifestyle

A Seattle-based startup, Atomo Coffee, is preparing to launch world's first beanless coffee this week with an aim to reduce the environmental impact of growing and brewing real coffee beans. The startup is backed by some of the investors who support Beyond Meat.

The investors have poured USD 51.6 million into the startup. The brew uses superfoods and upcycled ingredients to mimic molecular structure of coffee.

As climate change has effect on global weather, coffee farms are moving uphill in search for cooler climes. Forests are destroyed in this process to make way for these farms.

Deforestation further speeds up climate change and thus these two processes fuel each other. It has been estimated in number of studies that by 2050, about half of the land currently under use to grow coffee will be unproductive due to climate change.

"Coffee is causing deforestation at a pretty alarming rate - almost up to ten (New York) Central Parks a day," said Atomo's CEO and co-founder Andy Kleitsch ahead of the firm's beanless coffee launch at the New York Coffee Festival on Friday.

"We're talking about a machine, a coffee machine that's never stopping, always looking for more land, and that's what we're trying to prevent," he said.

Atomo Coffee says the initial 'proof-of-concept' cold brew coffee led to 93 per cent less carbon emissions and involved 94 per cent less water than regular coffee. The invention was hailed as one of the 200 best inventions of 2022.

The startup is expecting that it will see similar figures for its hot beanless coffee which will also be made using upcycled ingredients like date pips which normally get discarded.

Atomo is initially targeting coffee shops as opposed to stores and supermarket chains as its roasted coffee will wholesale for $20.99 per lb, versus the $10-14 per lb paid by the average US coffee shop.

Atomo has said that it is in talks with most of the major global coffee firm in order to decide how it will supply them.

'Beanless coffee' to soon become available, will help save forests

Faced with a skewed rainfall this year, Australia has recorded its driest September since records began in 1900. The data has surfaced even as uncontrollable bush fires are raging in Victoria and new South Wales. The meteorological office has also warned of flash floods in the regions later this week.

The Albania coast is battering wildfire. Firefighters are struggling to keep the blaze in control, which, as per the state media has been going on for more than a week. According to authorities, wildfire has burned through 500 hectares of pine forest. Greece has responded by sending two firefighting planes. This summer, searing temperatures fuelled wildfires and prompted health warnings across southern Europe.

Hot autumn weather is forecast to extend across European countries in October. After their hottest September on record. According to weather experts, this year is likely to be the warmest in human history as a strong heat dome will re-develop into Western Europe, with a new heatwave for countries underneath.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Saturday (Sep 30) warned that the heavy downpour which led to flash flooding in New York City is the "new normal" because of the effects of climate change.

"And of course, we know this is a result of climate change. This is, unfortunately, what we have to expect as the new normal. It makes us be more prepared than ever before. And it requires us to focus on resiliency, to head off the horrific impacts that could be there if we're not ready for the next storm,” the governor said.

"This was the kind of rain that was once unimaginable and called them 'once-in-a-century storms'. But this is the third time since I was sworn in two years ago I've had a 'once-in-a-century storm'. This includes the historic flooding we had in the Hudson Valley this summer, which was deemed a 1000-year flooding event,” he added.

The statement was made by the governor as the city started to dry out after experiencing one of its wettest days ever.

Although the risk of flooding receded in the city by midday Saturday, a municipal hospital, located in the borough of Brooklyn, stated that all patients and staff would be evacuated after they experienced a power failure on Friday.

The hospital officials said that NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull was using power backup after there was a power outage in their neighbourhood on Friday but for repair power needed to be entirely shut off for several days.

Historic floods in New York

So, 120 patients were transferred by the hospital to other hospitals on Saturday in an eight-hour-long process. Some streets turned into rivers due to intense rainfall, as cars and buses remained stranded for hours and some commuter rail lines and subway were forced to shut down.

Flights were either cancelled or delayed, and LaGuardia Airport's one terminal was evacuated.

"This event was historic in some areas, was record-shattering, and it is the most rain ever recorded in a single day at a place like JFK, ever. Not just this summer, not this year, but ever. And the record is still coming in. We're still monitoring. The rain is still falling,” the governor stated.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Saturday (Sep 30) warned that the heavy downpour which led to flash flooding in New York City is the "new normal" because of the effects of climate change.

New York's flooding is 'new normal' in wake of climate change: Governor

An alarming discovery has been made in the Brazilian Amazon as over a hundred dolphins have been found dead in Lake Tefé within the past week. This coincides with an extraordinary drought and soaring water temperatures, reaching an astonishing 39 degrees Celsius in some areas.

The Mamirauá Institute, a research institution funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, reported this startling occurrence of dolphin fatalities. Such a substantial number of deaths among these aquatic mammals is highly unusual and raises concerns.

The prevailing theory is that these fatalities are connected to the record-high temperatures in Lake Tefé and the Amazon's historic drought, reported the Guardian.

Dry season impact

The Amazon River, renowned as the world's largest waterway, is currently experiencing its dry season. This season, characterised by reduced water levels, has resulted in elevated temperatures in the water bodies it encompasses. Additionally, other river creatures are also grappling with the adverse effects of these record-high temperatures.

Brazil has witnessed an onslaught of unusually extreme weather conditions in recent months, primarily stemming from human-induced climate change and the influence of El Niño. While some regions in the southern part of the country have grappled with severe flooding due to intense rainstorms, the northern regions are facing the brunt of an exceptionally harsh dry season.

Dolphins as river indicators

Dolphins hold a vital role as indicators of a river's overall health, which directly affects the communities residing along its banks. To combat climate change and reduce fuel consumption, the Biden administration presented a bold proposal to elevate fuel economy standards by 2032, Reuters reported. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) aims to establish a fleet-wide average of 58 miles per gallon, significantly boosting Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) requirements for passenger cars and light trucks. This move is expected to curtail greenhouse gas emissions and encourage manufacturers to prioritise fuel efficiency.

The proposal, which covers the model years from 2027 to 2032, outlines a 2 per cent annual increase for passenger cars and a 4 per cent annual increase for light trucks in CAFE requirements. Additionally, the agency is proposing new fuel efficiency standards for heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans from 2030 to 2035, with a 10 per cent annual increase.

Building upon the previous regulations finalised in 2022, which aimed for a fleet average of 49 miles per gallon by 2026, the new proposal by NHTSA is projected to result in substantial benefits for both vehicle owners and the environment. According to NHTSA estimates, the proposed standards would save 2032 vehicle owners approximately $1,043 in lifetime fuel costs while raising average vehicle costs by $932.

NHTSA emphasizes that this rule will incentivize manufacturers producing internal combustion engine vehicles during the standard-setting timeframe to achieve significant fuel economy improvements, enhance energy security, and drastically reduce harmful pollution.

While these CAFE requirements represent a crucial step towards environmental sustainability, they are not as stringent as the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) proposal in April to decrease vehicle tailpipe emissions. Notably, NHTSA is legally restricted from considering electric vehicles in setting fuel economy standards. The EPA's proposed standards for 2027 to 2032 aim to cut emissions by 56 per cent and could result in 67 per cent of new vehicles in 2032 being electric.

It is projected that NHTSA's proposal, if implemented, would lead to a remarkable reduction of gasoline consumption by 88 billion gallons through 2050, providing a substantial contribution to the fight against climate change.

The agency is seeking public input on five different alternatives, including one that involves not increasing the requirements and another that calls for annual increases of 6 per cent for cars and 8 per cent for light trucks. NHTSA's preferred alternative aims to strike a balance between environmental impact and market feasibility, ensuring that it does not create consumer acceptance or sales issues.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, representing major automakers such as General Motors, Toyota, and Volkswagen, has expressed concerns over the EPA's emissions proposal, stating it is neither reasonable nor achievable. Conversely, Tesla has called for even stricter regulations by the EPA.

As the automotive industry navigates the transition towards cleaner and more fuel-efficient vehicles, the alliance is currently reviewing NHTSA's latest proposal and its potential impact on the industry.

A rather unprecedented climate trial is currently underway at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg, France after six young people from areas in Portugal ravaged by wildfires took 32 European governments to court. Dubbed as the largest climate case ever to be heard by ECHR, the young people argue that the failure of the said nations to act fast enough on climate change is a violation of their climate rights.

The young Portuguese applicants, aged between 11 and 24, with the support of the British-based Global Legal Action Network (GLAN), filed the case in September 2020 against the 27 EU member states as well as Britain, Switzerland, Norway, Russia and Turkey. Why have these young Portuguese climate activists taken 32 European nations to court?

As we continue to witness record-breaking heatwaves and other extreme weather events which researchers previously said have been exacerbated by human-induced climate change, several ideas have been pitched to mitigate the dire challenge but this one is out of the world (literally).

About a giant ‘sun umbrella’

Astronomer István Szapudi of the University of Hawaiʻi Institute for Astronomy believes that a solar shield to reduce the amount of sunlight hitting Earth could help mitigate the problem. However, this is not the first time that the idea of a space-based solar radiation management (SRM) shield or shade has been proposed.

What makes this one different is the plan to tie the giant shield to a captured asteroid as a counterweight. The potential solution was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal.

So far, the idea of a solar shield, in theory, can cool down the Earth by shading it from some of the sun’s rays but the issue was the large amount of weight needed to make a shield massive enough to balance gravitational forces and prevent solar radiation pressure from blowing it away.

Therefore, the US-based astronomer’s idea involves a tethered counterweight instead of just a massive shield and the use of a captured asteroid to counter said weight to avoid launching such a big mass from Earth to hold the “sun umbrella”.

What makes this idea almost achievable?

Szapudi’s approach brings the idea into the realm of possibility with greatly reduced cost as well as lowering the difficulty of implementation. “In Hawaiʻi, many use an umbrella to block the sunlight as they walk about during the day,” the astronomer explained in a statement.

He added, “I was thinking, could we do the same for Earth and thereby mitigate the impending catastrophe of climate change?”

Previous research has suggested that even if we managed to lower solar radiation by 1.7 per cent it could prevent a catastrophic rise in global temperatures.

In line with this, Szapudi proposed two ideas – the first one would involve placing a tethered counterbalance toward the Sun could reduce the weight of the shield. The second is a counterweight of approximately 3.5 million tonnes, which would be over 100 times lighter than previous estimates for an untethered shield.

While the 3.5 million tonnes might sound like a lot of mass, only one per cent of it would account for the actual shield, around 35,000 metric tonnes and the remaining would be the asteroid.

The plan is to launch the counterweight, which will be attached to the solar shield by a strong graphene tether, and then slowly open once in space, allowing it to gradually fill with lunar dust or asteroid material.

Since the asteroid material that would act as ballast would already be in space it would not need to be launched from Earth. However, some of the largest rockets can carry about 50 tons to low Earth orbit, which poses a big challenge to this particular SRM plan.

Giant ‘sun umbrella’ tethered to asteroid may help fight climate change: Study

Microplastics have finally found their way to the clouds, Japanese researchers have revealed in a damning research. Researchers believe this could have a grave impact on ocean ecosystem and climate change.

Headed by Waseda University professor Hiroshi Okochi and others, the research team examined 44 samples of water collected from clouds. Analysts found that the water had at least 70 particles of microplastics.

The water was collected from mountains at the summit and foot of Mount Fuji and the summit of Mount Tanzawa-Oyama, west of Yokohama in Kanagawa prefecture.

"To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on airborne microplastics in cloud water," the authors wrote in their research paper.

Impact on climate change

Microplastics can cause severe damage to climate and the human body if their presence in clouds is not contained through coordinated efforts.

"If the issue of 'plastic air pollution' is not addressed proactively, climate change and ecological risks may become a reality, causing irreversible and serious environmental damage in the future," lead author Hiroshi Okochi of Waseda University warned in a statement Wednesday.

He added that when exposed to sunlight and ultraviolet radiations at the height of a cloud, microplastics can contribute to greenhouse gasses.

What are microplastics?

Microplastics are plastic particles measuring less than 5 millimetres in size. They originate from various sources, including industrial waste, textiles, synthetic car tires, personal care items, and more.

These minuscule particles have been found inside fish in the deepest parts of the ocean, scattered throughout Arctic sea ice, and covering the snow in the Pyrenees mountains that stretch between France and Spain.

However, the methods by which they are transported have remained poorly understood, especially when it comes to the airborne transport of microplastics, as research in this area has been limited.

Impact on climate change Microplastics can cause severe damage to climate and the human body if their presence in clouds is not contained through coordinated efforts. "If the issue of 'plastic air pollution' is not addressed proactively, climate change and ecological risks may become a reality, causing irreversible and serious environmental damage in the future," lead author Hiroshi Okochi of Waseda University warned in a statement Wednesday. Watch: Experts see hope in gloomy climate reports | WION Climate Tracker × He added that when exposed to sunlight and ultraviolet radiations at the height of a cloud, microplastics can contribute to greenhouse gasses. Microplastics found in cloud for first time, researchers sound warning bell

The Earth is heating up, and soon it may reach temperatures and humidity that after a few hours of exposure could prove fatal for humans, even young ones. Based on recent research, scientists have identified the maximum mix of heat and humidity a human body can take.

Wet bulb temperature

Previously scientists thought that a young, healthy person will die after enduring around six hours of temperatures close to 35 degree Celsius (95 degree Fahrenheit), and 100 per cent humidity. However, new research argues that the actual threshold could be much lower.

Researchers at United States' Pennsylvania State University decided to put the theorised "wet bulb temperature" to the test — the point at which sweat no longer evaporates off the skin, leading to heatstroke and eventually death. This was earlier measured using wet cloth and thermometers.

Measuring the core temperatures of healthy, young people inside a heat chamber, researchers found that the study participants reached their "critical environmental limit" at a wet bulb temperature of 30.6 degree Celsius, much lower than previously theorised.

Climate change and temperature rise

The previously thought heat, humidity-bearing capacity of humans (35 degrees Celsius) as per an AFP report has only been breached a few times, particularly in South Asia and the Persian Gulf.

Climate change, however, is leading to an increase in dangerous wet bulb events, with the frequency of such events doubling over the past 40 years, said Colin Raymond of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory while talking to AFP.

Raymond's research indicates that if the world warms 2.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, these wet bulb events will get even more frequent.

A recent report by European Union's climate change service Copernicus shows that oceans have hit their hottest-ever recorded temperature. Beating a 2016 record, the daily global sea surface temperatures have reached 20.96C, which is far above the average for this time of the year, reports BBC. In 2016, a record was set when the naturally occurring El Niño was in full swing.

Experts warn that extreme heat events, even below the 35-degree limit, can be deadly. They say that different people have different thresholds based on factors such as age, health, and even socioeconomic conditions. They point out that people least able to protect themselves from extreme heat will suffer the most.

Survival and climate change: Scientists identify 'deadly' heat and humidity combo

A new scientific analysis published Tuesday (August 22) said that man-made climate change is the reason behind 2023's severe and months-long "fire weather" conditions that led to Canada's record-breaking blazes.

A report titled - "Climate change more than doubled the likelihood of extreme fire weather conditions in Eastern Canada" - published by the World Weather Attribution group found that over the year, fire-prone conditions were 50 per cent more intense as a result of global warming.

The study mentioned that Canada has experienced its warmest May-June period since 1940, beating the previous record set in 1998 by a huge margin (0.8°C) and at the national scale, relative humidity was also very low.

It also mentioned that the warm and dry conditions, together with continuous southeasterly winds fueled extensive fire in Alberta, British Columbia, central Saskatchewan and southwestern portions of the Northwest Territories.

First author Clair Barnes, who is an environmental statistician at Imperial College London, told the news agency AFP, "As we continue to warm the planet, these kinds of events are going to get more frequent and they're going to get more intense."

Wildfires in Canada

In Canada, at least four people have reportedly died and around 200,000 people have been evacuated. But as the situation is normalising, some evacuees have returned home amid a gruelling fight against wildfires.

However, the impact of the wildfires appears to be long-lasting as the smoke from the burning forests has led to dangerous air pollution spreading across much of Canada and the United States to the south.

The air quality has been impacted in Canada, and in the neighbouring United States with Air Quality Index (AQI) values frequently exceeding safe levels in the midwest and northeast USA.

British Columbia lifts most travel restrictions

The British Columbia administration is planning to lift travel restrictions to the province's wildfire-hit interior. The travel measures restricted non-essential movement in the province's interior, including Kelowna, Vernon and Kamloops and were due to expire at midnight. The measure will remain in place for West Kelowna.

West Kelowna fire chief Jason Brolund told a news conference: "I really am beginning to feel like we're turning the corner here on this fire."

"...The efforts in partnership with the federal government, with First Nations and others on recovery, has started already," British Columbia Premier David Eby told a news conference in West Kelowna.
