Climate change is real this is a statement we have heard over the years but a byproduct stemming from these conversations is of climate anxiety. Much like climate change the anxiety around it is also a very real phenomenon. Google's data now shows that searches around climate anxiety have been on the rise.

A new study has found that extreme heat may have caused 70,000 excess deaths in Europe in 2022. The scientists at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) revised their earlier estimate of 61,000 after making changes to their framework for measuring heat-related mortality.

The researchers said the previous framework took into account the weekly data but now they were relying on daily data.

The new framework is based on daily temperatures and mortality records from 147 regions in 16 European countries.

<h2>2022: Second-hottest year for Europe</h2>

According to Copernicus, the EU’s earth observation programme, the year 2022 saw Europe witness the second-hottest year on record, with temperature around 0.9C above average and summer temperature at 1.4C above average.

Earlier, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and Copernicus said in a joint statement that Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent, warming twice as much as the global average since the 1980s.

“The record-breaking heat stress that Europeans experienced in 2022 was one of the main drivers of weather-related excess deaths in Europe,” said Dr Carlo Buontempo, the director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service in a June statement.

“Our current understanding of the climate system and its evolution informs us that these kinds of events are part of a pattern that will make heat stress extremes more frequent and more intense across the region,” he added.

<h2>Heat-related deaths to become annual phenomenon</h2>

Earlier, researchers at ISGlobal and Inserm said in July that Europe could see as many as 68,000 heat-related excess deaths each year by 2030.

By 2040, the figure could further swell to 94,000, unless global governments take radical steps to check the carbon emissions.

Extreme heat caused 70,000 excess deaths in Europe in 2022: Study

Brazil, which is currently experiencing a heatwave a month before start of the summer season, has recorded its highest ever temperature of 44.8 degrees Celsius (112.6F). The highest-ever temperature was recorded on Sunday (Nov 19) in Aracuai, a town in Brazil's Southeastern state of Minas Gerais. The unprecedented spike in temperature is being attributed to climate change and El Nino weather phenomenon.

Media reports have said that energy consumption in the country has soared in the wake of the heatwave. Red alerts have been issued across the country after temperatures started rising. But forecasters are now saying that there may be a let-up that'll provide comfort to the population.

The heatwave in the country was making news already, but it drew greater global gaze after singer Taylor Swift had to cancel one of her concerts in Rio de Janeiro because a fan died before a show. The show was slated to take place on Saturday last week.

Organisers of the show have been quoted in media report as saying that Ana Clara Benevides Machado (23) was at the stadium when she sought help. She was taken to hospital but died an hour later.

After the tragedy, Brazil's federal government ordered the organiser T4F to ensure water access at all of Swift's concerts in Brazil and issue a directive allowing water bottles to be brought into all concerts from now on.

Earth passed an internationally agreed-upon global warming threshold on Friday, raising concerns about climate change, its catastrophic consequences, and the efforts to limit it. Although the planet crossed the ideal threshold only briefly, it can have disastrous outcomes for nature and humankind. According to the preliminary data, global temperatures increased more than two degrees Celsius from the period when humans first started burning fossil fuels and emitting planet-warning greenhouse gases. However, this does not imply that the measures taken to decrease global warming have failed. "I think, while we should not read too much into a single day above 2 degrees Celsius (or 1.5 degrees Celsius for that matter), it's a startling sign nonetheless of the level of extreme global temperatures we are experiencing in 2023,” Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist with Stripe and Berkeley Earth, told The Washington Post. ALSO READ | Children develop behavioural issues if mothers experience high stress during pregnancy: Study Scientists would consider the average global temperature breached only when it would surpass the two-degree benchmark for months and years. However, the ominous milestone is another alarming sign that climate change is heading in a dangerous direction. If the global average temperature consistently exceeds the ideal threshold for extended periods, we may soon experience the hazardous impacts of global warming that scientists have been warning us about. Everyday variations around global temperature standards, which have slowly ascended for decades, pushed the planet over the hazardous barrier for the first time on Friday. After months of record warmth that have stunned many scientists, temperatures have continued to rise, defying expectations. ALSO READ | James Webb telescope's observations show ice-covered pebbles delivering water to young planets Dr Samantha Burgess, the deputy director of the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, posted on social media platform X that Friday's global temperatures were 1.17 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average, a record-setting margin. Given how much human-caused warming had occurred by that period, he wrote in the post, "Our best estimate is that this was the first day when global temperature was more than two degrees Celsius above 1850-1900 (or pre-industrial) levels, at 2.06°C." The European model used to determine global warmth estimates climate conditions in real-time using the same observations as weather predictions. Scientists will soon be able to confirm the record warmth through direct observations that they will gather and vet in the coming weeks. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in a 2022 report stated that the global temperatures will reach a state of stability when global carbon dioxide emissions hit net zero.&nbsp;

The report outlined that to achieve this stability at the 1.5°C (2.7°F) target, global net zero carbon dioxide emissions should be attained in the early 2050s. Similarly, for the 2°C (3.6°F) goal, the timeline extends to the early 2070s.

The report may have given a glimmer of hope for stable temperatures amidst concerns about rising sea levels and more intense storms. This also fueled enthusiasm for the global net-zero campaign and indicated that the positive outcomes of emission reduction efforts might finally manifest.&nbsp;

However, now questions are raised about what really lies after the world achieves net zero emissions.&nbsp;

EXPLAINED | What will happen if the world fulfills its goal of net-zero emissions?

A group of international researchers believe the collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) which is projected to lose mass due to climate change and global ocean warming and is likely to contribute to the rise in sea levels impacting coastal communities across the world is preventable.

The researchers are part of a project which is an international collaboration involving scientists, drillers, engineers and science communicators known as the “Sensitivity of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to Two Degrees of Warming” or SWAIS2C.&nbsp;

<h2>‘We may have some time’</h2>

Researchers citing a recent ice sheet modelling wrote in The Conversation, that all is not lost since Ross and Ronne-Filchner – Earth’s largest ice shelves currently stabilise large regions of ice in the West Antarctic interior – are still intact.&nbsp;

While there are ocean cavities beneath ice shelves that are already “warm”, there are also regions where ice shelf cavities are currently ‘cold’,&nbsp;the group of researchers and scientists wrote.&nbsp;

Therefore, based on existing data they believe that these large ice shelves and the WAIS will largely remain intact if we manage to keep warming close to or below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial level.

The modelling experiments, according to the researchers, indicate that if the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold, set under the 2015 Paris climate agreement, is not crossed it can limit the total contribution to sea level rise coming from the Antarctic ice sheet to somewhere between 0.12-0.44 metres by 2100.&nbsp;

However, since global surface temperature is likely to exceed the 1.5-degree threshold, the melting of the ice sheet could raise global sea levels by as much as three metres. The WAIS is said to be Antarctica’s largest current contributor to global sea-level rise.&nbsp;

They also noted that the collapse of the WAIS could have devastating consequences, including widespread flooding and displacement of coastal communities.&nbsp;

<h2>Addressing the knowledge gap</h2>

The SWAIS2C project, according to their website, aims to answer the key question ‘Does the Paris climate target save the Ross Ice Shelf and limit Antarctic Ice Sheet melt’?&nbsp;

In a bid to look for the answer, their team will recover “key environmental information from the ice and sediment” at two different sites on the Ross Ice Shelf.&nbsp;

So far, no one has drilled deep into the Antarctic seabed, particularly at a location so far from a major base and so close to the centre of the WAIS.&nbsp;

The team, according to the project’s website, will drill through thousands of feet of ice at two different sites – Kamb Ice Stream and Crary Ice Rise – to recover “sediment cores”.

The drilling would also allow them to collect and compare data on how the ice shelf behaves in different temperatures to understand how sensitive the Ross Ice Shelf and WAIS were to past warming similar to the 1.5 to two degrees Celsius set in the Paris Agreement.

The researchers are part of a project which is an international collaboration involving scientists, drillers, engineers and science communicators known as the “Sensitivity of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to Two Degrees of Warming” or SWAIS2C. ‘We may have some time’ Researchers citing a recent ice sheet modelling wrote in The Conversation, that all is not lost since Ross and Ronne-Filchner – Earth’s largest ice shelves currently stabilise large regions of ice in the West Antarctic interior – are still intact. While there are ocean cavities beneath ice shelves that are already “warm”, there are also regions where ice shelf cavities are currently ‘cold’, the group of researchers and scientists wrote. ALSO READ | Global fossil fuel production plans threaten 1.5 degree Celsius warming threshold: UN report Therefore, based on existing data they believe that these large ice shelves and the WAIS will largely remain intact if we manage to keep warming close to or below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial level. The modelling experiments, according to the researchers, indicate that if the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold, set under the 2015 Paris climate agreement, is not crossed it can limit the total contribution to sea level rise coming from the Antarctic ice sheet to somewhere between 0.12-0.44 metres by 2100. However, since global surface temperature is likely to exceed the 1.5-degree threshold, the melting of the ice sheet could raise global sea levels by as much as three metres. The WAIS is said to be Antarctica’s largest current contributor to global sea-level rise. They also noted that the collapse of the WAIS could have devastating consequences, including widespread flooding and displacement of coastal communities. ALSO READ | Climate crisis: Heat-related deaths might rise 370% by 2050s, claims study Addressing the knowledge gap The SWAIS2C project, according to their website, aims to answer the key question ‘Does the Paris climate target save the Ross Ice Shelf and limit Antarctic Ice Sheet melt’? In a bid to look for the answer, their team will recover “key environmental information from the ice and sediment” at two different sites on the Ross Ice Shelf. So far, no one has drilled deep into the Antarctic seabed, particularly at a location so far from a major base and so close to the centre of the WAIS. ALSO READ | Greenhouse gas concentration hit record high in 2022: UN The team, according to the project’s website, will drill through thousands of feet of ice at two different sites – Kamb Ice Stream and Crary Ice Rise – to recover “sediment cores”. The drilling would also allow them to collect and compare data on how the ice shelf behaves in different temperatures to understand how sensitive the Ross Ice Shelf and WAIS were to past warming similar to the 1.5 to two degrees Celsius set in the Paris Agreement.

Researchers believe the collapse of West Antarctic ice sheet is preventable: Report

A recent analysis published by the Lancet has predicted that yearly heat-related deaths could increase by 370 per cent by the 2050s worldwide if global temperatures rise by 2°C over pre-industrial levels.

Vulnerable populations across the world, which include the elderly and children, are now exposed to twice as many heatwave days due to climate change.

These projections are part of the latest edition of the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change.

“Our health stocktake reveals that the growing hazards of climate change are costing lives and livelihoods worldwide today. Projections of a 2°C hotter world reveal a dangerous future, and are a grim reminder that the pace and scale of mitigation efforts seen so far have been woefully inadequate to safeguard people’s health and safety”, Marina Romanello, Executive Director of the Lancet Countdown at University College, London, said in a statement.

“With 1,337 tonnes of carbon dioxide still emitted every second, we aren’t reducing emissions anywhere near fast enough to keep climate hazards within the levels that our health systems can cope with,” the statement added.

The study represents the work of 114 experts from 52 research institutions and UN agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

<h2>Significance ahead of COP28 Summit</h2>

This report comes at a crucial time ahead of the climate summit COP28 that will be held in Dubai in less than a month. For the first time in the history of climate conferences, there is an entire day dedicated to health.

“There is still room for hope” Romanello added in the statement.

“The health focus at COP28 is the opportunity of our lifetime to secure commitments and action. If climate negotiations drive an equitable and rapid phase out of fossils fuels, accelerate mitigation, and support adaptation efforts for health, the ambitions of the Paris Agreement to limit global heating to 1.5 °C are still achievable, and a prosperous healthy future lies within reach,” the statement reads further.

<h2>Impact on health and economy</h2>

Even with the current global average heating of 1.14°C over the past decade, an analysis revealed that people, on average, faced 86 days of health-threatening high temperatures during 2018-2022.

Alarmingly, over 60 per cent of these occurrences were more than twice as likely due to man-made climate change.&nbsp;

The impact on health was evident, with an 85 per cent increase in heat-related deaths among individuals aged over 65 from 2013-2022, surpassing the expected 38 per cent increase based on unchanged temperatures since 1991-2000.

The economic ramifications were substantial, with the total value of losses from extreme weather events reaching an estimated $264 billion in 2022, marking a 23 per cent increase compared to 2010-2014.&nbsp;

Heat exposure contributed to a staggering 490 billion potential labour hours lost globally in 2022, reflecting an almost 42 per cent surge from 1991-2000. Notably, income losses disproportionately affected the GDP of low-income (6.1 per cent) and middle-income countries (3.8 per cent). These escalating losses not only pose a threat to livelihoods but also curtail the ability to effectively cope with and recover from the consequences of climate change.

Climate crisis: Heat-related deaths might rise 370% by 2050s, claims study

The United Nations (UN) warned on Tuesday (Nov 14) that the world was failing to get a grip on climate change, as an assessment of current climate pledges showed only minor progress on reducing emissions this decade. In a statement, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said the world was failing to act with sufficient urgency to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

The UN found out that combined climate plans from nearly 200 countries would put the world on a path for 2030 carbon emissions just two per cent below 2019 levels. This was far short of the 43 per cent fall that the IPCC said was needed to limit warming to the Paris deal target of 1.5 degrees Celsius since the preindustrial era.&nbsp;

The report was released just weeks before the COP28 in Dubai which will be from Nov 30 to Dec 12.

<h2>'Inch-by-inch progress will not do'</h2>

Speaking to the news agency AFP, UN Climate Change Chief Simon Stiell said, "Every fraction of a degree matters, but we are severely off track. COP28 is our time to change that." He called for the upcoming climate change conference to mark a clear turning point for a world already wrecked by increasing floods, heatwaves and storms.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that countries were not acting fast enough to avoid a climate catastrophe. "Inch-by-inch progress will not do. It is time for a climate ambition supernova in every country, city, and sector," Guterres said.&nbsp;

AFP reported that in September, a global stocktake of the world's progress on averting the worst impacts of climate change warned that the world was far off target. Global greenhouse gas emissions must peak by 2025 and drop sharply thereafter to keep the 1.5C limit in view, it said.&nbsp;

A response to the stocktake would form the centrepiece of the COP28 meeting with important discussions over the future of oil, gas and coal. However, countries still fail to match their actions to what scientists say is needed to avoid blasting past the world's agreed global warming limits.&nbsp;

UN warns world failing to get a grip on climate change

France has committed to spending €1 billion ($1.07 billion or £880 million) in polar research by 2030.&nbsp;

The step, as per reports, is in response to growing scientific concern over the accelerating melting of the world's ice caps and glaciers.

<h2>Macron's speech</h2>

Speaking at a summit in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasised the urgent need for action, stating, "We are not talking about a threat for tomorrow, but one that is already present and accelerating. We are talking about a transformation of the cryosphere [the Earth's ice] that already threatens millions and will threaten billions of the planet's inhabitants with multiple direct and indirect consequences."

As per The Guardian, a new polar science vessel will lead the initiative. France is urging a moratorium on seabed exploitation in polar regions, with several countries, including the UK, Canada, Brazil, and 19 others, signing up.

John Kerry, the US special presidential envoy for climate, who did not attend the Paris summit, sent a video message. In it, he warned: "We must understand the tipping points, the points which there is no reclaiming, there is no coming back."

<h2>Polar temperatures: A cause for concern</h2>

Rising temperatures at both poles, resulting in heatwaves, have raised concerns among scientists.&nbsp;

As one scientist put it, it is "gobsmackingly bananas," this year, marked as the hottest on record — probably the hottest in 100,000 years — has witnessed ocean temperatures well above normal levels.&nbsp;

The Earth's ice caps play a crucial role in reflecting sunlight back into space, known as the "albedo effect," and their melting could trigger rapid climate change by reducing this reflection.

"I know that climate change is seen as a soft issue [compared with wars and national security]… but we can’t negotiate with the melting point of ice," warned Pam Pearson, founder and director of the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative.

France commits a billion Euros to polar research amid ice caps, glaciers' melting concerns

An interesting phenomenon is emerging in Antarctica. A new study has revealed that the reduction in sea ice in the continent is linked to heavier snowfall in the region.

This new trend can partially counteract the impact of melting ice, thus slowing down the increase in global sea levels.

<h2>More sea melting leads to heavier snowfall</h2>

A team of scientists published the study in Geophysical Research Letters. After analysing regions near the Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica, they found that ice-free ocean surface leads to more precipitation and snowfall in the region.

However, the scientists made it clear that the increased rate of snowfall was not enough to completely offset the impact of climate change and ice melting.

Luke Trusel, assistant professor of geography at Penn State and co-author of the study, said that scientists also need to take into account the amount of snowfall that occurs in the region to fully understand the impact of ice melting on global sea levels.

Melting sea ice causing heavier snowfall in Antarctica, staving off high sea levels

Scientists from University of Copenhagen said on Friday (November 10) that global warming has increased the speed of melting of Greenland glaciers fivefold in last 20 years. Greenland's ice cover is closely monitored because these ancient ice sheets contain so much water that if they were to melt completely, sea levels would rise by at least 20 feet.

Anders Anker Bjork, who is assistant professor at the department of geosciences and natural resource management at the University of Copenhagen, told Reuters that the rate of melting of ice has entered a new phase in past 20 years. The conclusion was arrived at after a study of a thousand glaciers in the area. &nbsp;

"There is a very clear correlation between the temperature we experience on the planet and the changes we observe in how rapidly the glaciers are melting," Bjork said.

The scientists studied the development of the glaciers over the past 130 years with the help of satellite imagery and 200,000 old photos.

Global warming has upped Greenland glacier melting five-folds in 20 years

Global fossil fuel production in the next seven years will be more than double the levels pushing the world far beyond the climate goals, including the 1.5 degree Celsius target, set under the 2015 Paris climate agreement, said the United Nations and researchers, on Wednesday (Nov 8).&nbsp;

The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Production Gap report comes ahead of the COP28 climate conference which will take place later this month, where the future of fossil fuels is set to be a key point of discussion.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the UNEP report find?</h2>

The report assesses the gap in fossil fuel production cuts and what’s needed to meet climate goals. “Fossil fuel phase out is one of the pivotal issues that will be negotiated at COP 28,” said Ploy Achakulwisut, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) scientist and a lead author of the report said in a press briefing.&nbsp;

She added, “We need countries to commit to a phase out of all fossil fuels to keep the 1.5C goal alive.” Leaders from across the world are set to convene for the global COP 28 climate meeting starting November 30, in the oil-rich nation of United Arab Emirates (UAE).&nbsp;

Under the Paris climate deal, nations have committed to a long-term goal of limiting average global temperature to less than two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and even try to limit them further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

However, the report analysed 20 major fossil fuel producers and found they plan to produce a total of 110 per cent more fossil fuels than what would be consistent with limiting the degree of warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, and 69 per cent more than would be consistent with two degree Celsius.&nbsp;

The report also noted that none of the 20 countries – which account for 82 per cent of production and 73 per cent of consumption of the world’s fossil fuel supply – have committed to reducing coal, oil, and gas production in line with limiting the warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

This comes as burning fossil fuel has been attributed as the main cause of climate change as it accounts for most of the planet-heating carbon pollution driving global warming.&nbsp;

<h2>Calls for unity ahead of COP28</h2>

“Governments’ plans to expand fossil fuel production are undermining the energy transition needed to achieve net-zero emissions, throwing humanity’s future into question,” said UNEP Executive Director, Inger Andersen.&nbsp;

She also called for nations to “unite behind a managed and equitable phase-out of coal, oil and gas – to ease the turbulence ahead and benefit every person on this planet.” The countries analysed include Australia, China, Norway, Qatar, Britain, the UAE and the United States.

Out of the 20 countries, 17 have pledged to reach net zero emissions but continue to promote subsidies, support and plan the expansion of fossil fuel production, said the report.&nbsp;

In fact, the US which aims to reach net zero emissions by 2050 has accelerated domestic production of oil and gas since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

Global fossil fuel production in the next seven years will be more than double the levels pushing the world far beyond the climate goals, including the 1.5 degree Celsius target, set under the 2015 Paris climate agreement, said the United Nations and researchers, on Wednesday (Nov 8).

Global fossil fuel production in the next seven years will be more than double the levels pushing the world far beyond the climate goals, including the 1.5 degree Celsius target, set under the 2015 Paris climate agreement, said the United Nations and researchers, on Wednesday (Nov 8). The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Production Gap report comes ahead of the COP28 climate conference which will take place later this month, where the future of fossil fuels is set to be a key point of discussion. What did the UNEP report find? The report assesses the gap in fossil fuel production cuts and what’s needed to meet climate goals. “Fossil fuel phase out is one of the pivotal issues that will be negotiated at COP 28,” said Ploy Achakulwisut, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) scientist and a lead author of the report said in a press briefing. She added, “We need countries to commit to a phase out of all fossil fuels to keep the 1.5C goal alive.” Leaders from across the world are set to convene for the global COP 28 climate meeting starting November 30, in the oil-rich nation of United Arab Emirates (UAE). Under the Paris climate deal, nations have committed to a long-term goal of limiting average global temperature to less than two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and even try to limit them further to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Global fossil fuel production plans threaten 1.5 degree Celsius warming threshold: UN report

China on Tuesday published its long-awaited methane reduction plan it had committed to back in 2021.&nbsp;

After two years of failing to materialise, the release of this plan signals that Beijing is moving closer to a new climate agreement with the United States.

<h2>How China plans to reduce methane</h2>

China, as per Reuters, is by far the biggest producer of climate-warming methane with over 14 per cent of global emissions. However, Tuesday's long-awaited plan does not include any firm targets. Instead, it proposes goals for the reuse of methane as fuel.

The plan published by China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment pledges that the nation will strive to curb "flaring," or burning off emissions, at oil and gas wells. It also said that China would target methane leaks at coal mines to be closed up.

Furthermore, the nation has vowed to promote methane control in agriculture and to bolster methane control from waste.

<h2>Experts call the plan disappointing</h2>

Political analysts are less than enthusiastic about the plan. At COP26 in Glasgow, China had pledged to cooperate with the US on measuring and reducing methane. However, its newly released strategy leaves much to be desired.

Yan Qin, lead carbon analyst at Refinitiv, a part of LSEG, a UK-based company that provides global financial market data, said the objectives mentioned in China's plan are "too ambiguous".

"The objectives mentioned in the plan are too ambiguous, and contain mainly descriptive text, no specific targets in methane emissions reduction."

However, others see the release of the plan as a "golden opportunity" which could mean that a new China climate agreement was on the horizon, reports The Guardian. Leaders of the two nations are expected to meet at the APEC summit in San Francisco next week.

At the Glasgow climate summit, the two nations had agreed to establish a working group on climate action.&nbsp;

Talking to Reuters, Climate analyst Li Shuo, the incoming director of the China Climate Hub at the Asia Society, commented that the plan's release potentially "paves the way" for a joint statement from the world's two largest greenhouse gas emitters.

<h2>Why methane reduction is important</h2>

Methane gas is a key emission responsible for&nbsp;global warming and climate change, which has a warming potential of 100 times that of carbon dioxide. Tackling methane is seen as the key&nbsp;to controlling climate change in the short term.

China close to climate pact with US? Releases 'ambiguous' methane reduction plan

Countries moved a step closer on Saturday (Nov 4)&nbsp;to getting a fund off the ground to help poor states damaged by climate disasters, despite reservations from developing nations and the United States.&nbsp;

The deal to create a "loss and damage" fund was hailed as a breakthrough for developing country negotiators at United Nations climate talks in Egypt last year, overcoming years of resistance from wealthy nations.

But in the past 11 months, governments have struggled to reach consensus on the details of the fund, such as who will pay and where the fund will be located.&nbsp;

A special UN committee tasked with implementing the fund met for a fifth time in Abu Dhabi this week - following a deadlock in Egypt last month - to finalise recommendations that will be put to governments when they meet for the annual climate summit COP28 in Dubai in less than four weeks' time. The goal is to get the fund up and running by 2024.&nbsp;

The committee, representing a geographically diverse group of countries, resolved to recommend the&nbsp;World&nbsp;Bank&nbsp;serve as trustee and host of the fund - a tension point that has fuelled divisions between developed and developing nations.

Housing a fund at the&nbsp;World&nbsp;Bank, whose presidents are appointed by the US, would give donor countries outsized influence over the fund and result in high fees for recipient countries, developing countries have argued.

World Bank to host climate loss and damage fund amid concerns by developing nations

Baltic Sea, the largest expanse of brackish water in the world, as per German media reports, is on the verge of collapse.

The sea's ecosystem, as per reports, is reeling under the detrimental impact of environmental pollution and overfishing.&nbsp;

<h2>Dire situation</h2>

A recent report by the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM) about the state of the Baltic Sea paints a dire situation, reports German media.

The HELCOM study indicates that, despite conservation efforts by ecologists and experts alike&nbsp;over the last few years, there has been no improvement in the state of the Baltic Sea. In fact, the condition in certain areas has deteriorated, according to the report.&nbsp;

"The health of the Baltic Sea ecosystem is under threat from the increasing effects of climate change and biodiversity degradation, catalysed by pollution, demands on land use, resource extraction and other pressures," says the report.

<h2>What are the primary challenges to the Baltic Sea?</h2>

As per the report, the Baltic Sea is primarily affected by human-induced activities like eutrophication — the over-enrichment of water, harmful substances and pollutants, oxygen depletion, and habitat destruction.

These human activities, as per the report, are "enhanced" by climate change.

"Climate change effects are already evident in the Baltic Sea, and global warming is expected to lead to further hydrological and ecological changes in the near future."

Quoting the report, German news outlet Bild reports, "Specific species, such as water birds, are facing drastic hardship, particularly along the German coast of the Baltic Sea. The condition is especially serious in the Bay of Kiel, Mecklenburg Bay, and Arkona Basin, where Rugia Island is located. The local porpoise population is also in jeopardy."

This degradation not only affects marine and animal&nbsp;life but also impacts humans. "The degradation of the marine ecosystem also reduces its (Baltic Sea) ability to produce goods and services for the benefit of society, with effects on our well-being," says the report. &nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>The way forward</h2>

The report states that continued efforts to improve the environmental status of the Baltic Sea's biodiversity are of key importance.&nbsp;

It speculates that successfully limiting the amount of pressure human activities put on the environment should "show signs of improvement and support a sustainable marine region."

"Ultimately, the recovery of the Baltic Sea biodiversity is entirely dependent on how well we can manage our activities to ensure that they are truly sustainable, both in the near future and in the long term," it concludes.

Baltic Sea in 'dire' state due to human activities and global warming: Report

China's initiative to improve its urban air quality have often been welcomed as a critical measure in fighting climate change but climate scientists are not sure anymore.

Mission Sustainability: China war on air pollution may be causing more global warming

China's response to its air pollution woes&nbsp;consists of a massive experiment to remove atmospheric&nbsp;sulphur dioxide&nbsp;— a primary component of smog&nbsp;— which has in turn&nbsp;resulted in record-high sea temperatures, an analysis by climate experts said.&nbsp;

Sulphur dioxide plays a crucial role in creating cloud-forming particles in the lower atmosphere. These particles can absorb, scatter, and reflect sunlight, and potentially mitigate the warming effects of greenhouse gases.

<h2>What is China's Catch-22 situation?</h2>

Climate experts have closely monitored the impact of China's efforts to reduce marine fuel emissions since 2020, particularly in relation to record-high sea temperatures. However, the substantial reduction of sulphur dioxide emissions from China's vehicles and industrial sources over the past decade has the potential to cause significant warming effects, particularly in Asia.

Yangyang Xu, an Associate Professor of Atmospheric Science at Texas A&amp;M University, pointed out the unexpected consequences of the fight for improved air quality.

"We are actually heating the planet by improving air quality."

China declared a "war" on pollution in 2014 and implemented a number of&nbsp;stringent measures that became a template for developing world cities to combat air pollution.

Power plants, steel mills, and industrial facilities were mandated to upgrade emission control technologies and use cleaner, lower-sulphur coal. Moreover, vehicle fuel standards were raised nationwide.

The correlation between sulphate reduction and observed phenomena, such as floods and heat waves, is a subject of ongoing scientific investigation in relation to the warming temperatures of the planet.

China's annual sulphur dioxide emissions significantly decreased from nearly 26 million tonnes in 2006 to 3.2 million tonnes in 2020, Reuters reported while citing the figures from the National Bureau of Statistics.

China's efforts to control air pollution are actually warming the planet, say climate experts

More than 46.3 million healthcare professionals, in a joint letter, have urged Sultan Al Jaber, the president of the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference, to ensure a favourable outcome and help ditch fossil fuels for a “just, equitable and healthy future for all”.

The 28th Climate Change Conference will be held in Dubai from November 30 to December 12. The conference will be hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The theme of the conference will be addressing the direct health impacts of climate change on individual well-being and healthcare systems.

The letter argues that the draft of the climate and health declaration which is due to be adopted at COP28 makes glaring omissions of any “acknowledgement of fossil fuels as the driver of climate change”.

One of the key demands of the letter is that fossil fuel industry representatives be excluded from climate negotiations, in the same way, that the tobacco industry was not allowed to participate in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.&nbsp;

&nbsp;“It is imperative to safeguard global collaboration on climate progress from the lobbying, disinformation, and delays in favour of industry interests,” it states.

“The climate crisis is a health emergency. As doctors working on the front line, our members see first-hand the devastating impact of climate change and air pollution on our patients,” Dr Latifa Patel, Representative Body Chair, British Medical Association, one of the signatories, said.

“It’s vital that doctors, healthcare workers and health experts worldwide stand together and send a clear message to the COP28 Presidency and world leaders that international action and cooperation is vital to ensure a just, equitable and rapid phase out of fossil fuels to safeguard the future of the planet and the wellbeing of the global population.”

One of the key demands of the letter is that fossil fuel industry representatives be excluded from climate negotiations, in the same way, that the tobacco industry was not allowed to participate in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. “It is imperative to safeguard global collaboration on climate progress from the lobbying, disinformation, and delays in favour of industry interests,” it states. “The climate crisis is a health emergency. As doctors working on the front line, our members see first-hand the devastating impact of climate change and air pollution on our patients,” Dr Latifa Patel, Representative Body Chair, British Medical Association, one of the signatories, said. “It’s vital that doctors, healthcare workers and health experts worldwide stand together and send a clear message to the COP28 Presidency and world leaders that international action and cooperation is vital to ensure a just, equitable and rapid phase out of fossil fuels to safeguard the future of the planet and the wellbeing of the global population.” Also read | Israeli ministry floats idea of transferring 2.3 million Gazans to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula Dr Lwando Maki, President-Elect, Public Health Association of South Africa, urged the president to make a decision that is beneficial for the planet. Over 46 million health professionals ask COP28 President to ditch fossil fuels

The use of biogas capture from livestock manure is an innovative and sustainable approach that highlights how animal farms, traditionally considered a carbon threat, can actually become a crucial part of achieving global decarbonization goals. This process offers several benefits for farmers and the environment, while also challenging the notion that livestock operations are inherently detrimental to the environment.

Changing the Narrative on Animal Farms

For many years, animal farms have been viewed as contributors to carbon emissions, primarily due to the methane released by livestock. However, the adoption of biogas capture technology flips the script, demonstrating that these farms can be part of the solution to climate change.

Transforming Carbon Threat into Opportunity

Biogas capture technology reframes animal farms as potential contributors to global decarbonization efforts. Instead of being perceived solely as carbon emitters, these farms can actively work to reduce their emissions and generate clean energy.

Leveraging Methane Emissions

Livestock operations are uniquely positioned to capture and repurpose methane emissions, which have been a significant concern. By preventing these emissions from entering the atmosphere, farms can play a role in mitigating their contribution to global warming.

Harnessing Biomethane as a Sustainable Fuel

The upgraded biogas to biomethane serves as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. This renewable fuel can power tractors, farm equipment, and facilities, reducing the reliance on carbon-intensive energy sources.

Economic Benefits and Revenue Generation

Biogas capture technology not only benefits the environment but also offers economic advantages to farmers. They can use the produced biomethane for their own operations, potentially reducing energy costs. Additionally, excess biomethane can be sold as fuel or converted to electricity, creating a new revenue stream.

Alignment with Decarbonization Goals

The use of biomethane fuel enables farmers to align with global and national decarbonization policies. It allows them to demonstrate their commitment to environmentally friendly agricultural practices.

Soil Enhancement and Sustainable Agriculture

The solid byproduct, digestate, enriches the soil as an organic soil enhancer, reducing the need for carbon-intensive chemical fertilizers. This supports sustainable farming practices and contributes to improved soil health.

Inclusivity Across Farm Sizes

Biogas capture is a versatile solution that can be implemented on both large and small farms. This inclusivity ensures that farms of various scales can contribute to carbon reduction efforts.

Reducing Environmental Impact

Biogas capture not only addresses methane emissions but also reduces odors and prevents rainwater from entering open-air lagoons, making it a comprehensive solution for mitigating environmental impact.

Global Potential and Positive Environmental Effects

With millions of farms worldwide, biogas capture has the potential to make a significant impact on global carbon emissions. It is a scalable solution that can contribute to positive environmental effects on a global scale.

The collaboration between agricultural machinery firms and biomethane experts showcases how the agriculture sector can transform from being seen as a carbon threat to actively participating in the transition to more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. This approach aligns with the broader trend of integrating clean energy technologies into various sectors to reduce emissions and accelerate progress toward a more sustainable future.

Animal farming: from carbon culprit to climate champions?

Scientists may have finally solved the world’s oldest ‘murder mystery’: The disappearance of a group of marine animals from ancient supercontinent Gondwana.

Gondwana used to be a supercontinent, from around 550 million years ago to approximately 180 million years ago, alongside Laurasia.

Gondwana incorporated present-day South America, Africa, Arabia, Madagascar, India, Australia, and Antarctica.

<h2>The 390-million-year-old murder mystery</h2>

It is believed that the so-called Malvinoxhosan biota — an ancient group of water-dwelling animals — disappeared from Gondwana over a period of five million years. What caused their disappearance remained a mystery for centuries.

Now, a recent study has pointed fingers towards climate change. The study, published on Oct 13 in the journal Earth-Science Reviews, found that climate change led to a dramatic fall in the sea levels, wiping out the group of marine animals.

"It's a 390-million-year-old murder mystery," said study lead author Cameron Penn-Clarke.

<h2>How climate change wiped off Malvinoxhosan biota?</h2>

According to the researchers, who reanalysed hundreds of fossils belonging to the Malvinoxhosan biota, the decrease in the water level was not directly responsible for their extinction but it triggered those climate changes that they couldn’t adapt to.

The drop in sea level disrupted ocean currents around the South Pole known as "circumpolar thermal barriers," which enabled warmer water from the equator to mix with colder southern waters.

Climate change is no longer a theoretical concern; rather, it is a harsh reality that businesses everywhere are having to deal with.

Climate change no longer a distant threat, it's a stark reality

In a world grappling with the climate crisis, the call to integrate climate education all around the corporate world and also into school curriculum is reaching a fever pitch. It's not just about learning, protecting our children's well-being and future generations. Seeing the climate crisis unfold before their eyes can have a major impact on their mental and physical health.

No action, not an option: Need for addressing issues around climate literacy

A new report has shown that 98 per cent of Earth's population experienced higher temperatures from June to August. This was caused by effects of Global Warming made more than twice likely by greenhouse gases caused by human activities. The peer-reviewed research was reported by Euronews. The research was reportedly published last week.

This year, the summer in northern hemisphere was hottest on record. July was the hottest month ever-recorded and average temperatures in August were 1.5 degrees Celsius more than those in pre-industrial levels. The year was also witness to widespread wildfires especially in North America and Europe.

Euronews reported that the study has been carried out by Climate Central, a US-based research group. The study involved a look at temnperatures in 180 countries and 22 territories. It was found that 98 per cent of the world population was exposed to high-temperatures which were made at least twice more likely by carbon dioxide emissions.

"Virtually no one on Earth escaped the influence of global warming during the past three months," said Andrew Pershing, Climate Central's vice president for science.

"In every country we could analyse, including the southern hemisphere, where this is the coolest time of year, we saw temperatures that would be difficult - and in some cases nearly impossible - without human-caused climate change," he said.

Pershing was quoted by Euronews.

<h2>Without climate change, heatwaves 'would not have occurred'</h2>

Climate Central assessed if heat events became more likely due to climate change by making comparison between observed temperature and those gerenated by computer model which remove influence of greenhouse gases.

Study finds 98 per cent population in world experienced effects of global warming

The Amazon River, a lifeline of the Brazilian rain forest, has plummeted to its lowest level in more than a century, as a severe drought disrupts the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and wreaks havoc on the jungle's fragile ecosystem.

Rapidly dwindling tributaries have left boats stranded, cutting off essential supplies to remote villages and decimating the river's biodiversity, including the population of endangered river dolphins.

The port city of Manaus, at the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Amazon River, has recorded historically low water levels, posing a dire situation for the region's most populous city.

Villagers in the heart of the Amazon rainforest have been grappling with months of relentless drought.&nbsp;

<h2>Historic low water levels</h2>

The situation is deeply alarming, with the port of Manaus measuring a mere 13.59 meters (44.6 ft) of water on a Monday compared to 17.60 meters just a year ago.

This record low is the lowest level registered since the commencement of record-keeping in 1902, surpassing the previous all-time low in 2010. The implications of such a drastic drop in water levels are extensive, touching upon transportation, agriculture, and health.

The Brazilian government's disaster alert centre, Cemaden, has noted that some areas of the Amazon have experienced the driest period from July to September since 1980.

The Brazilian Science Ministry attributes this dire situation to the onset of the El Niño climate phenomenon, which has caused extreme weather patterns globally.

It anticipates that the drought will persist at least until December when El Niño's effects are expected to peak. This has created a severe predicament, impacting not only the immediate environment but also the livelihoods of thousands of people.

<h2>Impact on local communities</h2>

The drought's impact is acutely felt by local communities, affecting the lives of 481,000 people as of the most recent data.

Isolation due to dried-up river channels has hindered the transportation of essential supplies, including food, clean water, and medicines. While some areas remain reachable by canoe, many boats have been unable to navigate the receding waters, leading to a reliance on tractors or foot travel to deliver goods.

In addition to logistical challenges, the drought has posed severe health risks to residents. Reduced water levels have raised concerns about the cleanliness of local water supplies. The scarcity of clean water has led to health issues among the community's children, with instances of diarrhoea, vomiting, and fever due to waterborne diseases becoming more frequent.

With the increasing popularity of SUVs in the UK, a study has revealed that the cars bought today have higher carbon emissions than the ones bought in 2013.&nbsp;

The study conducted by Possible, a climate campaign group, calculated that the rising sales of SUVs and the fact they tend to be notably heavier than the traditional models previously bought, means the average conventional-engined car bought in 2023 has higher carbon emissions than its 2013 equivalent.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/a-researchers-climate-pledge-cost-him-his-job-heres-how-645988">Also read |&nbsp;A researcher's climate pledge cost him his job. Here's how</a>

The study comes amid increasing concerns about the environmental, health and safety impacts of the rising popularity of SUVs in the country.&nbsp;

The data found the carbon impact of the rich people's driving habits has damaged the climate more than those of the middle class. This is because the data showed a strong correlation between income and owning a large SUV.&nbsp;

According to the stats,&nbsp;households in the top 20 per cent of the income bracket are 81 per cent more likely to own a vehicle that emits more climate-damaging gases than the rest 80 per cent. Furthermore, the data showed that the top 20 per cent group drives three times as many miles a year as those in the bottom income bracket

The car ownership data in the Lonon borough of Kensington and Chelsea found that having an SUV, such as the Land Rover Defender, is associated with living in a richer area.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/amphibians-are-vanishing-at-an-alarming-rate-scientists-warn-645511">Also read |&nbsp;Amphibians are vanishing at an alarming rate, scientists warn</a>

The study urges the need to differentiate charges for drivers based on greenhouse gas emissions rather than emissions with direct public health effects like nitrogen oxides (NOx).&nbsp;

It highlights concerns that older cars emitting more NOx are used by less wealthy individuals in urban areas, while high greenhouse emissions often result from wealthier people purchasing large SUVs.&nbsp;

Some areas like Lambeth Lambeth, in south London, charge owners of the heaviest, most high-emission vehicles, more than four times as much for an annual parking permit than for the smallest cars. A similar scheme has been adopted in Kensington and Chelsea which has a differential of up to 10 times.

SUVs are even more prevalent in some other countries, including the&nbsp;United States, India etc.&nbsp;

It highlights concerns that older cars emitting more NOx are used by less wealthy individuals in urban areas, while high greenhouse emissions often result from wealthier people purchasing large SUVs. SUVs are even more prevalent in some other countries, including the United States, India etc. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Study reveals latest SUV models emit more climate damaging gases than older ones

A commitment to reducing carbon emissions has cost a researcher his job. How? Gianluca Grimalda is in the Solomon Islands for a research trip. The climate activist has been refraining from flying for over a decade. Whosoever he met during his field trip, including those displaced by climate change, the activist vowed that he would reduce his carbon emissions on the way back home on his return journey.

However, a challenge emerged about two weeks ago when&nbsp;his employer demanded him to fly at short notice to Germany from the Solomon Islands. His seniors at the Kiel Institute for Worldwide Economy (IfW) set a deadline for him to get back to his desk.

The only options he had to choose from were whether to travel by air or get sacked from his job. Given the climate pledge he had taken, the researcher declined to return.

Later, his employer on Wednesday (Oct 11) told him that his contract had been terminated and he had been sacked from his employment.&nbsp;

“IfW seems to ignore that we have entered the Anthropocene era and that the most important Earth ecosystems are close to collapse if not already collapsed,” Grimalda said.

“In this era, wasting 4.5 tonnes of CO2 (the difference between the flight emissions and the slow-travel emissions) to comply with the absurd request to be physically present in Kiel at such short notice is morally unacceptable and epitomises the ultimate privilege of the global elites."

He continued saying that the situation "is the sign that IfW is still living in an era that will be wiped out by the incoming climate collapses.”&nbsp;

Now, Gianluca Grimalda is still hanging in there in Bougainville waiting for a cargo ship.

The ship will depart on Saturday (Oct 14) and he will board it for his journey back to Europe. The researcher has spent about six months where he delved deep to investigate the impacts of climate breakdown and globalisation on the island’s inhabitants, reported Guardian.&nbsp;

<h2>How much emission the journey would have caused?&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

Grimalda, in an opinion piece in the Guardian, suggested that the carbon emissions owing to his one-way flight to Europe from the Solomon Islands archipelago were even higher than the carbon footprint of an average person living there in an entire year.

He also reportedly said that initially he thought to appeal against his employer's decision but “In this case, the initial impression is that IfW actions are justified legally.”
