Talismanic Indian batter Virat Kohli has an outstanding 50-over record against New Zealand, even if his century tally on Kiwi soil remains surprisingly sparse. Although his ODI average against the Kiwis reads a brilliant 56.58, including six hundreds, Virat has scored only one of them in New Zealand, 12 years ago during the Napier ODI. The arrival of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and his form since winning the orange cap in IPL 2026 for most runs scored (776 runs) has put Sanju Samson's place as an India opener under constant pressure. India batter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/cheteshwar-pujara">Cheteshwar Pujara</a>, who recently announced his retirement from all formats, was one of the most difficult batters to be dismissed in world cricket. During his playing years 2010-2023, he troubled bowlers with his impregnable defence by dipping into his sea of concentration and patience. He was part of many memorable victories and saved numerous matches for India by absorbing not only pressure but playing infinite balls. His methods were equally effective in India and outside but he was at his absolute best in Australia - where he was the most difficult batter to be dismissed since the 1990s.<h2>Was Pujara better than Rahul Dravid at number 3 for India?</h2>When Pujara broke into the Indian side in 2010, the T20 cricket was starting to peak and the attacking brand of cricket was taking over every batter. The modern-day wall featured in 108 internationals, including 103 Tests, scoring 7,195 runs in red-ball cricket at an average of 43.60, with 19 centuries to his name. Cheteshwar Pujara bids adieu to international cricket, rather all forms of it, on Sunday (Aug 24) and this game and its countless fans shall be indebted to him for his contribution to it. He was one of a kind, perhaps the last of his kind, and Team India was blessed to have him as its batting mainstay, mainly in Tests, for 14 years. Cricket, like life, has always had someone to replace someone – like it did in Sachin Tendulkar’s case, it brought in Virat Kohli, and this modern-day great did do justice to it. However, finding Pujara’s replacement, let alone for Indian cricket, could take a long time, perhaps never!&nbsp;Pujara was a proper Test cricketer, something that, with the passing time, has now become a rarity in international cricket. But no one is to be blamed. It’s the game’s evolution that led to the demise of a certain breed while unearthing another. Although it’s hard to find proper Test match batters nowadays, precisely the number threes in the game, something that quietly vanished from cricket’s face, to be able to get another one like him would be this game's win, big time.&nbsp;Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cheteshwar-pujara-retirement-sachin-tendulkar-wonderful-career-credits-him-for-india-2018-down-under-australia-success-1756031880307">Sachin Tendulkar lauds Cheteshwar Pujara on ‘wonderful career’; credits him for India’s 2018 Down Under success</a> &nbsp;Pujara was never in a hurry, never. There were no ifs and buts about it, and each captain was as happy to have him in the line-up as anyone. Although some did complain about him being slow, probably killing the momentum, or not being able to play as per the situation, everyone forgot, in that moment, that he was always like this – stubborn, solid and sassy at the crease. &nbsp;Test cricket enthusiasts loved him, so did the writers, the journalists, the age-old broadcasters, and above all, this game. Sometimes even the bowlers, the fielders, the umpires, the fans - everyone! &nbsp;He could bat for hours and hours together, or days, or even on all days of a Test, as record books suggest, but then so could everyone; however, not everyone could take blows as he did.&nbsp; &nbsp;On his last tour Down Under, in the fourth Test at the Gabba, which India famously won and broke Australia’s long-standing streak, Pujara took blows as if he was supposed to. His bruised body was a testament to his will and determination to do it for his team, and not surprisingly, he did, helping his team win the match and clinch a historic series win.<h3>Dream over money</h3>Pujara never complained. Sure, he must have had desires to fill his pockets with T20 cricket money, like everyone did and still does to date, but he knew his game, his strengths and backed them, and he succeeded. &nbsp; &nbsp;He was sweet yet dangerous and like none the game has seen.&nbsp; &nbsp;Thank you, Pujara, cricket loves you, cricketers love you, and so do we!

I was like you have run yourself in the first innings how can you be so brave to take on the quickest man on the field and then not be seen in the frame when the replay is shown. I was like my god. That is the worst call I have seen in my life," Kohli explained the decision after picking Pujara.

India skipper Rohit Sharma is going through a rough patch in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series and batting at number 6 hasn't helped the cause either. Rohit has scored only 19 runs in three innings he has played in the BGT series with 10 being the highest score.
After his dismissal in Brisbane's first innings, veteran India batter Cheteshwar Pujara explained how changing the batting position may have put a doubt in Rohit's mind.

“He has been opening the innings, now he's batting at number 6. That is for the team, but I still feel that when you are so much used to opening the innings and when you have to wait, then you put yourself in that doubt. I mean, it doesn't help you when you're opening innings and you suddenly start batting at number 6. So that you don't get that momentum either,” Pujara said while talking on Star Sports.
Rohit decided to bat in the middle order after KL Rahul did well in the first BGT Test in Perth as the opener during which Rohit was absent due to his second child's birth.
The skipper's form, however, has been a cause of concern long before the Australia tour. In the five Tests he played before the BGT, Rohit scored only 133 runs in 10 innings at an average of 13.33 with a highest of 52. It is to be noted that all those five Tests were played at home.
Rahul, on the other hand, has been doing a fine job as an opener in Australia. The batter has scored 235 runs in six innings - the highest for India in the series so far and second highest overall behind Travis Head's 409.
Rahul has scored those runs at an average of 47 with two fifties and a highest of 84, which he hit in Brisbane, helping India draw the rain-affected Test.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma is struggling for runs in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 edition in Australia. After missing the series opener, in Perth, Rohit walked into the playing XI but hasn't managed to create any impact with the bat, demoting himself to No. 6 (owing to KL Rahul's success as an opener). He has had scores of 3, 6 and 10 and, hence, fingers are being pointed at him. Veteran Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara decoded Hitman's failures and feels with him not opening the innings, it has caused the lean patch.
Speaking on Rohit's dismissal (10) on Day 4 of the rain-marred Gabba Test, in Brisbane, on Tuesday (Dec 17), Pujara said on Star Sports, "It wasn't a length where you can drive. We have seen that even a fuller-length ball, it's hard to drive. He, kind of tried to punch that ball. He should have defended that ball, and allowed the ball to come to him rather than going for that ball. And I think the tough part is he hasn't been, amongst runs, and, that's where the pressure is."

We have seen that even a fuller-length ball, it's hard to drive. He, kind of tried to punch that ball. He should have defended that ball, and allowed the ball to come to him rather than going for that ball. And I think the tough part is he hasn't been, amongst runs, and, that's where the pressure is." Also read: BGT, Gabba Test: Indian batters falter again, Australia in driver's seat despite rain playing havoc on Day 3 'Doesn't help you when you're opening innings and suddenly start batting at No. 6' Pujara added, "He has been opening the innings (since 2019), now he's batting at number 6. That is for the team, but I still feel that when you are so much used to opening the innings and when you have to wait, then you put yourself in that doubt. I mean, it doesn't help you when you're opening innings and you suddenly start batting at number 6. So that you don't get that momentum either." At present, the Rohit-led Indian team has negated the follow-on threat on Day 4 of the Gabba Test in Brisbane after Australia posted 445. At stumps on the fourth day, India are 252-9, trailing by 193 runs. The five-match Test series is currently tied at 1-1. Captain Rohit will be desperate to make a strong mark with the bat in the remainder of the series.

India lost the second Test, in Adelaide, to Australia by ten wickets as the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) is now levelled at 1-1. While India looked clueless in the pink-ball contest, despite a big win in the series opener in Perth, captain Rohit Sharma made heads turn with his decision-making. He was blamed for being defensive as it allowed Australia to take a&nbsp;sizeable 157-run lead, after India bundled out for 180, whereas his decision to bat at No. 6 surprised many. The opener demoted himself down the order to not disturb the opening pair of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who flourished in Perth.

However, the move didn't pay dividends as Rohit and the opening pair failed. Many former cricketers believe Hitman should go back to opening the innings, which he has been doing since late 2019, however, veteran Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara explained why Rohit batting down the order is ideal.

In the build-up to the third Test, in Brisbane, Pujara told ESPNCricinfo, "He has not scored a lot of runs against New Zealand and did not start well in Australia, so there is a bit of pressure on him to perform. But someone like him who knows his game will have to be more positive and work a bit more on his footwork. If he has a slightly bigger stride, it will help him.&nbsp;The stump line has been troubling him a lot. He has been getting out bowled and LBW, which is a bit of a concern for him. That's the line he will have to work on in the nets because in the balls outside off stump, he is looking more comfortable. I think he should continue to bat at No. 6."

<h2>'I think he should continue to bat at No.6. We are looking at India's future'</h2>

Pujara added, "We are looking at India's future, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. They batted really well in the 1st Test match, Shubman also is likely to bat at No.3. We should think about the long term and that's why I think that Rohit should continue to bat at No. 6."

Rahul and Jaiswal recorded the highest opening stand for India in Tests in Australia (201) during the Perth Test. Hence, they are likely to continue as openers for the remainder of the series. However, it will be interesting to see if Rohit regains form at No. 6, where he batted for a long time before cementing his spot as an opener since Sep 2019.

BGT: Cheteshwar Pujara explains why Rohit Sharma should continue to bat at No. 6 as Brisbane Test nears

Veteran India batter Cheteshwar Pujara has backed pacer Harshit Rana to retain his place in the playing XI for the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test in Brisbane which starts on December 14. The comments come as Pujara answered a question about changes in the playing XI after India's loss in the second BGT Test.

“I feel only one change might happen. Since the batting wasn't good, Washington Sundar can come in place of R Ashwin. Should someone come in place of Harshit Rana? In my opinion, no. You backed him and he performed well in the first match," said Pujara while talking on Star Sports.

“He is a good bowler. You cannot drop him just because one match went bad. Probably the only change for me would be Sundar for Ashwin if the team feels the batting lineup needs strengthening,” he added.

Rana, who made his debut in the first BGT Test in Perth, has been impressive but not enough to make a huge impact. In his first Test, Rana took four wickets (three in first innings and one in second) but went wicketless in the second Test played under lights in Adelaide.

India won the first match by 295 runs but lost the second one by 10 wickets and they have looked desperate for a pacer to compliment Jasprit Bumrah, who has been outstanding so far with 12 wickets in two games.&nbsp;

While Mohammed Siraj has played his part with nine wickets in two games, he largely fits the bill of a third pacer but has been pushed to the frontline pair with Bumrah in Mohammed Shami's absence.

Shami, meanwhile, has bowled his full quota of four overs in all eight Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) T20 games, further proving that the bowler is almost 100 per cent fit for his much-awaited international return.

BGT 2024-25: Cheteshwar Pujara backs pacer Harshit Rana for Gabba Test, suggests THIS change instead

Veteran Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara feels KL Rahul should continue to bat at the top for India ahead of the second Test versus Australia, starting on Dec 6, in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) edition. In the first Test, Jasprit Bumrah-led India beat Australia by 295 runs in Perth sans regular captain Rohit Sharma. As Rohit is set to return for the second Test, i.e. a day-night contest in Adelaide, he is likely to take back the opening slot from Rahul, who opened with Yashasvi Jaiswal and scored a crucial 77 in the second innings. However, Pujara feels Rahul should open or, at least, bat at No. 3 if Rohit opens with Jaiswal.

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Pujara told, "I think, for some reason, if we can carry on with the same batting order like KL and Yashasvi to open, Rohit could come in at three, and Shubman could come in at five. If Rohit wants to open, KL should bat at No. 3. Nothing later than that. I think he has to bat top of the order because it suits his game really well. I hope we don't tinker around with that."

At present, Shubman Gill -- who also missed the series opener due to thumb injury -- can also return to the playing XI, further complicating the batting order. However, he is still on the road to recovery. Pujara further opined that if Gill returns, he can take the No. 5 slot.

"Ideally No. 5. Because it allows him to come in at a time, even if we lose two wickets early, he is someone who can negotiate the new ball. But if he walks in after, say, 25 or 30 overs, he can play his shots. He can play his natural game," the former No. 3 batter mentioned.

Pujara was quick to point out that the Bumrah-led bowling attack should remain unchanged. "There is no question about it. This bowling attack has given us success. (Jasprit) Bumrah looked really good. (Mohammed) Siraj was very good. And then it was supported by Harshit. He bowled really well, you have to accept that. He was playing his first game (for India), but still, he ended up pitching the ball up. In Australia, it's very easy to get carried away and sometimes when you look at the pace of the pitch, it offers a bit more extra bounce. But he was still looking to hit the right spot, good length, try and hit the top of off, and he has that ability."

India gambled by playing Washington Sundar over senior spin-bowling all-rounders R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in Perth. Sundar returned with two scalps and also added some vital runs down the order in India's second innings. Thus, Pujara has backed him to retain his spot. "Washington can bat well, which could be vital if the lower-middle order needs to contribute. Although he started slow with the ball, he improved and took a couple of key wickets," the 36-year-old added.

India beat Australia convincingly in Perth to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. After only managing 150 in the first innings, opting to bat first, Rohit-less India rode on stand-in captain Bumrah's 5-fer to dismiss the Aussies for 104. In the second innings, Jaiswal (161), Virat Kohli (100*) and Rahul (77) took India to 487-6, setting a mammoth 534-run target as Australia folded for 238 to lose by a big margin.

The second Test, i.e. a pink-ball contest, kicks off in Adelaide on Dec 6.

BGT 2024/25: Rahul should bat at No. 3 if Rohit Sharma wants to open in Adelaide Test, feels Pujara

Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024/25 edition, which gets underway in Perth on Nov 22 (Friday), Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood expressed his relief over Cheteshwar Pujara's absence in the India squad. Pujara last played for India during the WTC 2023 final at The Oval, London. Since then, he has been out of the India Test lineup due to his ordinary run. Pujara, however, was a beast in Australia during India's last two visits, hence, is absence has pleased Hazlewood.&nbsp;

Prior to the BGT 2024/25 opener, Hazlewood said at a press conference, "I am happy that Cheteshwar Pujara is not here. He is obviously someone who bats time and spends a lot of time at the crease and makes you earn his wicket every time. Has done really well in Australia on previous tours. I mean there are always first-class young players coming into the team. There is so much pressure to perform in the Indian team. With so many guys nipping at the hills all the time, so overall the playing XI is a mix of unbelievable players. So it does not really matter, they are all big players."

Pujara has an exceptional record in Australia. The right-hander, a veteran of 103 Tests, has scored 993 runs in 11 games against the Aussies, in Australia, at an average of 47.28. During India's maiden Test series triumph in Australia, in 2018/19, he ended with 521 runs&nbsp;at an average of 74.42 to be adjudged the Player of the Series. Even in the 2020/21 series win for India Down Under, he played an integral part with 273 runs, along with three fifties. Overall, he has&nbsp;five half-centuries and three centuries in Australia.&nbsp;

This time around, Shubman Gill is expected to do well for India at the No. 3 spot. He has succeeded Pujara at the slot since the veteran's ouster and done a good job so far. It will be interesting to see if he can replicate Pujara's feat Down Under. Ahead of the Perth Test, Gill is running against time to be fit following a thumb injury in the run-up to the BGT 2024/25 edition.
