"We're introducing legislation to implement a national freeze on handgun ownership," Trudeau told a news conference, joined by dozens of families and friends of victims of gun violence.

"What this means is that it will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada," he said. "In other words, we're capping the market for handguns."

In April 2020, Canadian government banned 1500 types of firearms. The step came after the country's worst mass shooting. Twenty three people were dead in the tragedy.

The government statistical agency reported last week that firearms-related violent crimes account for less than three percent of all violent crimes in Canada.

But since 2009 the per capita rate of guns being pointed at someone has nearly tripled, while the rate at which a gun was fired with an intent to kill or wound is up five-fold.

Almost two-thirds of gun crimes in urban areas involved handguns.

Canadian police often point at gun-smuggling taking place across the border from USA. They say that this is the main source of illegal handguns in Canada.

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino estimated there are about one million handguns in this country -- up significantly from a decade ago.

Trudeau commented, "People should be free to go to the supermarket, their school or their place of worship without fear. People should be free to go to the park or to a birthday party without worrying about what might happen from a stray bullet.

"Gun violence is a complex problem," he said. "But at the end of the day, the math is really quite simple: the fewer the guns in our communities, the safer everyone will be."

"Under this unconstitutional provision, offenders have been sentenced to imprisonment for life without eligibility for parole for 50 or even 75 years," said the ruling, which was written by Chief Justice Richard Wagner. &nbsp;

"This storm was almost about 1,000 kilometers" long, Environment Canada Senior Climatologist David Phillips told local station CFRA on Sunday.

"That's what a derecho is, it's a long line of very active thunderstorms or microburst kind of situations," he said.

"Nothing can deter it. It just marches along."

Some 900,000 homes lost electricity Saturday night, with hundreds of thousands of households still in the dark by Sunday evening, local energy providers Hydro One and Hydro-Quebec said on Twitter, as they worked to restore power.

Roads remained strewn with branches and debris, with authorities saying it would take several days to clear.

Kenny requested the leadership review to avert a caucus mutiny after months of harsh criticism of his management of the covid outbreak and his uncompromising leadership style. As a result of his decision, UCP, the ruling will appoint an interim leader and premier, as well as will hold a leadership election.&nbsp;

The United States has warned of the&nbsp;security&nbsp;implications of giving Chinese tech companies access to telecommunications infrastructure that could be used for state espionage.

"The Canadian side has excluded these Chinese companies from the Canadian market under the pretext of&nbsp;groundless&nbsp;security&nbsp;risks&nbsp;and without any solid evidence."&nbsp;

He added that Beijing would&nbsp;"take all necessary measures" to protect Chinese companies.

"This move runs counter to market economy principles and free trade rules," he said, accusing the Canadian government of "seriously damaging the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies."

Canada&nbsp;had been reviewing the&nbsp;5G&nbsp;technology and network access for several years, repeatedly delaying a decision that was first expected in 2019.

It remained silent on the telecoms issue after&nbsp;China&nbsp;jailed two Canadians -- diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor -- in what observers believed was in retaliation for the arrest of&nbsp;Huawei&nbsp;chief financial officer Meng Wangzhou in Vancouver in December 2018 at the request of the United States.

Champagne&nbsp;said Canadian telecommunications companies&nbsp;"will not be permitted to include in their networks products or services that put our national&nbsp;security&nbsp;at risk."

"Providers who already have this equipment installed will be required to cease its use and remove it," he said.

Hostile actors

Huawei&nbsp;already supplies some Canadian telecommunications firms with 4G equipment.

Most, if not all, had held off using&nbsp;Huawei&nbsp;in their fifth-generation (5G) wirelesss networks that deliver speedier online connections with greater data capacity. Others have looked to other suppliers while Ottawa hemmed and hawed.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino warned Thursday of "many hostile actors who are ready to exploit vulnerabilities" in telecom networks.

The United States, Australia, Britain, New Zealand, Japan and Sweden have already blocked or restricted the use of&nbsp;Huawei&nbsp;technology in their&nbsp;5G&nbsp;networks.

The US government considers&nbsp;Huawei&nbsp;a potential&nbsp;security&nbsp;threat due to the background of its founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei, a former Chinese army engineer who is Meng's father.

The concern escalated as&nbsp;Huawei&nbsp;rose to become the world leader in telecoms networking equipment and one of the top smartphone manufacturers.&nbsp;

Beijing also passed a law in 2017 obliging Chinese companies to assist the government in matters of national&nbsp;security.

The decision could prove to be "a major expense for&nbsp;Canada," Kendra Schaefer, tech policy researcher at consultancy Trivium&nbsp;China, told AFP.

"Not only have local telecom providers already invested... in&nbsp;Huawei&nbsp;equipment, but additionally they are going to go back and have to rip out everything they've already installed," she added.

Arya completed his education in India. He holds bachelor's degree in engineering and a masters in business administration.

The issue of this law's constitutionality came to light in connection with three separate cases.&nbsp;

As part of the Friday ruling, the court upheld the acquittal in two of the cases and said a trial can be ordered in the third one.

According to MP Chandra Arya, members of the Hindu community started coming to Canada 100 years ago. Today, their population is about 600,000. The community has people who migrated from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Southeast Asia and even Africa.

“Hindu-Canadians have made and continue to make significant contribution to Canada’s socio-economic, political, and cultural heritage as doctors, scientists, engineers, lawyers, business leaders, artists, academics, government officials, elected officials, etc. From building institutions to being philanthropists, Hindu-Canadians have excelled in all services and sectors and in all walks of life,” said Chandra Arya in his speech in Canadian parliament.

Canada's Department of National Defense said that the fatal incident took place early on Friday.

The four cadets were travelling in a car that entered a water body on the campus at Point Frederick. An official of the college was quoted by Reuters to say that Jack Hogarth, Andrei Honciu, Broden Murphy and Andrés Salek were forth year cadets at the military college.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service was investigating the incident.

Hogarth and Salek were studying military and strategic studies and were going to become armour officers in the army.

Investigators were seen Friday examining the road and shoreline in boats and on foot. Late Friday afternoon, the vehicle that carried the cadets was pulled from the water by authorities, CBC News reported.

Canada&nbsp;announced Thursday a lifting of restrictions on blood donations by gay and bisexual men that dates back to the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s.

The policy change&nbsp;to be implemented by September marks "a significant milestone toward a more inclusive blood donation system," it said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it "good news for all Canadians," adding at a news conference: "Our blood supply will continue to be safe and we're doing away with a discriminatory blanket ban."

The move follows several changes to the blood donation regime over the past decade that saw deferral periods for donations by gay men progressively lowered from a lifetime ban to three months in 2019.

On Wednesday, Toronto police nabbed Richard Jonathan Edwin (39)&nbsp;in connection with two homicide cases, including Kartik's case. The police said that both the cases were an act of random attacks and ruled out any hate crime.

“The two victims were not known to the accused or each other. Investigators are working to establish the motive behind the attacks, and a probe is underway.”

However, Karti's father refused to believe it to be a case of random attack and sought the central government's intervention in the matter.

Edwin was arrested Sunday evening with a cache of loaded guns at his disposal, police said.

Briefing the reporters on Tuesday, Toronto police chief James Ramer said both the attacks were random killings and completely “unprovoked”.

"Kartik was just outside the Sherbourne subway station last Thursday when he was approached by a stranger...Unprovoked, this man shot Kartik multiple times, killing him," Ramer told reporters.

“Any death is tragic, but these men were completely innocent, and their murders were absolutely random acts of violence," he added.

Police said that Edwin has no prior murder cases against him and was in “lawful” possession of these guns.

Ramer believes that had the suspect not been caught sooner, there could have been a string of random attacks across the city.

"When, I don't know, but he had an arsenal at home. Frankly, I believe this might have just been a first step," Ramer said.

The police have now launched a probe to find out about his background and if he is associated with any organisation.

Vasudev hailed from Ghaziabad city in Uttar Pradesh. He had moved to Canada in January to pursue higher studies, according to his family.

He was shot on Thursday evening at the Glen Road entrance to Sherbourne TTC station in St James Town. He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
