The statement read: "While we recognize the inherent complexities around a postponement, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our athletes and the world community,” the COC said in its statement.

"This is not solely about athlete health — it is about public health. With COVID-19 and the associated risks, it is not safe for our athletes, and the health and safety of their families and the broader Canadian community for athletes to continue training towards these Games."

According to the Tokyo Olympics' organisers, the games will begin on schedule despite the global pandemic extending its roots across the globe.&nbsp;

The Olympics will begin on July 24 whereas the Paralympics will begin on August 25.

Postponing the 2020 Olympics "may become inevitable" if the new coronavirus outbreak makes it impossible to hold the Games safely, Japan's prime minister said Monday.

Shinzo Abe told parliament that Japan was still committed to a "complete" Games, but added: "if that becomes difficult, in light of considering athletes first, it may become inevitable that we make a decision to postpone."

Canada on Monday reported its first death from the new coronavirus as the number of people in the nation who have contracted the disease rose to above 70, officials said.

The dead man had been living in a nursing home, the Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver, British Columbia`s chief health officer Bonnie Henry told a news conference.

"We, unfortunately, have had a death here in British Columbia," Henry said.

The man was one of two residents infected at the long-care facility with no recent travel history. Henry said the dead man was in his 80s and had a number of underlying medical conditions.

Canada now has at least 71 presumptive and confirmed cases of the virus that causes the respiratory illness COVID-19, up from 51 on Friday and nine more than reported on Sunday.

Virus outbreaks are especially problematic in nursing homes because residents live in close quarters and tend to have weaker immune systems and underlying health conditions, so infections can spread easily.

On Saturday, Henry said two Lynn Valley residents had contracted the virus from one of the facility`s health workers who had been infected.

"The risk to the general population within Canada is still low, but this could change rapidly," Theresa Tam, Canada`s chief medical officer, said earlier on Monday.

In a potential sign of future challenges, Reuters reported that millions of face masks stockpiled by Ontario to protect healthcare workers during a future epidemic have expired.

That raises questions about the readiness of Canada`s most populous province to deal with the spreading coronavirus.

In the central province of Alberta, medical officials said the number of cases had risen to seven from four, all of which were linked to people who had traveled.

The novel coronavirus that emerged in central China in December has now spread to more than 100 countries and infected over 110,000 people worldwide with more than 3,800 deaths.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau`s government says it will help people who are forced into quarantine due to the virus. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland told legislators on Monday there would also be extra support for the healthcare system.

Canada is also now urging people not to take cruise ship vacations.

Canada is poised to repatriate more than 200 citizens aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship, which is due to dock in Oakland, California after an outbreak on the vessel carrying some 3,500 passengers and crew.

Calgary's south Asian origin mayor Naheed Kurban Nenshi has said Canada is "defiantly open" at a time of global backlash on the free movement of people and trade.&nbsp;

Calgary's Indian origin mayor Naheed Kurban Nenshi said, "What is critical about the success of Canada is that in a world which is increasingly defined about the closure, closed borders, close heart, closed minds the Canadian mindset is we are defiantly open, open to people, open to best ideas."

"I always brag the H1B visa in the US is impossible to get but equivalent visa in Canada can be processed in 10 days, we continue to be open to people from around the world particularly people from the subcontinent," she added.

Calgary is third largest city of Canada and one in 10 people in the city are of south Asian descent.&nbsp;

Calgary's Indian origin mayor Naheed Kurban Nenshi said, "What is critical about the success of Canada is that in a world which is increasingly defined about the closure, closed borders, close heart, closed minds the Canadian mindset is we are defiantly open, open to people, open to best ideas." "I always brag the H1B visa in the US is impossible to get but equivalent visa in Canada can be processed in 10 days, we continue to be open to people from around the world particularly people from the subcontinent," she added. Calgary is third largest city of Canada and one in 10 people in the city are of south Asian descent. International experts are questioning the scale of the new <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iran-dismisses-rumours-as-virus-deaths-jump-to-43-283474">coronavirus epidemic in Iran</a>, where the official death toll is second only to China and risks creating a regional epicentre of contagion.

While Iran has acknowledged 43 deaths among 593 confirmed infections nationwide -- with a vice-president and deputy health minister among those testing positive -- unofficial tolls are much higher.

The London-based BBC Persian service says 210 people have been<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iran-faces-global-criticism-over-its-handling-of-coronavirus-outbreak-283422"> killed by the virus</a>; a figure it says it collated from hospital sources.

The report was immediately dismissed by Iran's health ministry. &nbsp;

The People's Mujahedin, an exiled organisation that Tehran considers a terrorist group, claims that the epidemic has killed "more than 300" while infecting up to 15,000 across the country.

Six epidemiologists based in Canada used a mathematical model to estimate that there have been more than 18,000 cases on Iranian soil.

Their calculations -- not yet peer-reviewed -- take into account the number of cases in other countries that originated from Iran.

"When a country exports cases to other destinations it's very likely that the burden of infection in this country is significant", according to Isaac Bogoch, coauthor of the study and a specialist in infectious diseases at the University of Toronto.

This week, Reporters Without Borders added its own criticism of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/mike-pompeo-warns-iran-not-to-be-spoiler-in-afghanistan-283390">Tehran's handling of the outbreak</a>, accusing the government of stifling news on the spread of the virus.

"The authorities insist they have the situation under control but they have... obstructed journalists trying to cover the story," the media advocacy group said in a statement.

On Saturday, Iran's health ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour responded to the criticisms, accusing foreign media of spreading false news.

"Among Iran's radicals, there is an obsession with not giving ammunition to the enemy and avoiding appearing weak," said Thierry Coville, an Iran analyst at the French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs.

Iranian Twitter user Assieh Bakeri speculated: "Talking about coronavirus could soon be considered troubling for public opinion, undermining public security and insulting the president!"

Economic crisis weighs&nbsp;

More than seven per cent of people in Iran confirmed to be infected with the virus have died, according to Iran's official data, a far higher mortality rate than in other countries.

In China, 3.5 per cent of infected people have reportedly died. In Italy, another country hit hard by the virus, the death rate is reported at two per cent.

"In Iran, for example, they started detecting patients based on death. So if you calculate the case/fatality rate that way, it is going to be very high," said Cecile Viboud, an epidemiologist at the National Institutes of Health in the United States.

Whatever the reliability of official figures, Iran is certainly one of the main centres of contamination outside China.

The situation is aggravated by an economic crisis, as the country grapples with the effect of Washington re-imposing sanctions in 2018 -- a move that hit oil exports and provoked a recession.

"Why did Iran not stop flights to China? There is a rational explanation -- China is one of the last countries buying their oil. They need to maintain the economic link," Coville said.

"With the sanctions, we can say that the government has lost at least 30 per cent of its budget revenues. This has inevitably had an impact on their health system," he added.

Situated at a geographical crossroads in the Middle East and surrounded by countries with creaking infrastructure and challenging humanitarian conditions, Iran's situation gives cause for worry.

"This is concerning, both for public health in Iran itself, and because of the high likelihood for outward dissemination of the epidemic to neighbouring countries with lower capacity to respond to infectious diseases epidemics", the Canadian study concluded.

Azerbaijan, Iraq, Canada, Georgia, Lebanon, New Zealand and Qatar have now confirmed coronavirus infections among people arriving from Iran.

Iranian authorities have taken measures to counter the virus' spread, including cancelling Friday prayers in several cities, closing schools until at least Tuesday, shutting parliament until "further notice" and restricting travel within the country.

India should pursue consistent farm trade policies to help to avoid uncertainty among Canada's farmers, big suppliers of pulses to New Delhi, a Canadian government minister said on Thursday.

Protein-rich pulses are a staple of the Indian diet, and Canada is the world’s top exporter of peas and lentils.

India's record imports of 6.6 million tonnes of pulses in the 2016/17 fiscal year prompted Canadian and Australian farmers to expand production but New Delhi introduced import curbs the following year, hurting overseas producers.

David Marit, agriculture minister of Canada's Saskatchewan province, said India's trade policy flip-flops fuelled uncertainty among Canada's farmers.

Saskatchewan is Canada's biggest pulses producer.

"We would like to see consistency and transparency in market access," Marit told reporters on the sidelines of the Pulses Conclave, an industry conference.

In the 2016/17 fiscal year, Canada shipped a record 2.4 million tonnes of pulses but last year Canadian imports dropped to 121,861 tonnes.

Record imports led to a drop in domestic prices in 2016/17. India then raised import taxes on some pulses to as high as 50% and introduced import quotas for others such as yellow peas, green gram and chickpeas.

The import restrictions unnerved India's traditional suppliers who grow pulses to meet the country's annual requirements.

As Canada's pulses imports to India drop, Ottawa is trying to step up exports to China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates, Marit said.

The United States were heavy favourites against Mexico -- who were trying to get back to the Olympics for the first time since 2004.

But in Tokyo, the Americans will attempt to become the first nation to follow a World Cup triumph with an Olympic title. Past US World Cup-winning teams faltered in 2000 and 2016.

In Rio de Janeiro in 2016, the USA were stunned by Sweden in a quarter-final penalty shootout.

They'll get a chance at redemption after a dominant display against Mexico when Lavelle opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a left-footed blast from a pass by Megan Rapinoe.

Mewis doubled the lead in the 14th with a finish off Rapinoe's corner kick. Mewis made it 3-0 in the 67th and Press capped the scoring with a chip from close range in the 73rd.

Earlier, it was 18-year-old Jordyn Huitema who lifted Canada, scoring in the 72nd minute to ensure a return to the Olympics for the team that earned bronze in the 2012 London Games and the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Costa Rica, 37th in the FIFA world rankings, had kept the Canadians at bay with a disciplined defensive performance before Huitema, who plays her club football for Paris Saint-Germain, broke through.

She hit the post with a shot from a cross by teammate Deanne Rose, but the ball rebounded straight to her and she slotted it home for what proved the game-winner.

They may have left Britain and royal duties to live a private life in Canada, but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not been able to shrug off the prying media off their back even in a new country.&nbsp;

The couple started their new life in Canada on Tuesday but on the first day itself their lawyers had to issue a warning to media over the recent photographs of Meghan Markle.&nbsp;

The Duchess was photographed while taking a stroll with the couple's son Prince Archie and their two dogs. Two bodyguards were seen accompanying Meghan.&nbsp;

In Britain, the pictures were used by The Sun and the Daily Mail newspapers.

Following their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/prince-harry-meghan-markle-quit-royal-front-line-in-shock-move-273083">shock exit from life as working royals</a>, Harry jetted out from Britain to join Meghan late Monday at a luxury house outside Victoria on Vancouver Island.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have temporarily set up base at the wooded home, having spent six weeks there over Christmas with their baby son Archie.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/british-royals-being-victim-of-media-invasion-275866">In pics:&nbsp;5 times members of the British royal family got into legal feuds with the media</a>

Their shocking announcement on January 8 that they wished to step back from their royal duties rocked the monarchy.

The couple, who married in May 2018, admitted last year that they were struggling with media scrutiny and have regularly hit out at the press in statements and in the courts.

On Tuesday, lawyers claimed the images were taken by photographers hiding in bushes and spying on the US former television actress, the BBC reported, and that she did not consent to the photos. The couple were prepared to take legal action, according to the BBC.

The lawyers claim there had been attempts to photograph inside their new home using long lenses, and say paparazzi are camped outside the property.

A freelance photojournalist working in the area, who said he was from California but wanted to remain anonymous, said the potential legal issues are "kind of tough," but that he does not let them affect his work.&nbsp;

"Canada has freedom of the press laws," he said, sitting in the driver's seat of a white SUV with his photography gear on the passenger's side.

"From what I understand, as long as you are not following them, harassing them, breaking the law, as long as it’s a matter of public interest -- and the monarchy always is -- then the press is free to cover it."

- 'No other option' -

Harry, 35, and 38-year-old Meghan are bowing out entirely from representing the monarchy, in a crisis that has shaken the centuries-old institution.

Harry said Sunday that they did not want to quit their royal duties but <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/we-had-no-other-option-than-to-step-back-as-royals-prince-harry-275343">reluctantly accepted there was "no other option"</a> if they wanted to cut loose from public funding and seek their own income in pursuit of a more independent life.

Under their new arrangement, the Sussexes are free to earn their own commercial income -- though at a greater cost than they first envisaged.

They can no longer represent Harry's grandmother Queen Elizabeth II or be referred to as their royal highnesses, and must repay taxpayers' money spent on their UK home.

They will no longer receive public money -- though 95 percent of their annual funding comes from his father Prince Charles, via the heir to the throne's hereditary land and property estate.

To what extent that will continue, and who will cover their security bill -- currently met by the British police -- remains to be seen.

- Questions over funding -

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday denied having spoken "directly" with Queen Elizabeth about the security costs, after British media reports that the country had offered to foot the bill.&nbsp;

"Discussions continue to be ongoing and I have no updates at this moment," Trudeau told a news conference.

Canadian media have estimated the cost of protecting the couple and their eight-month-old son Archie at about Can$1.7 million (US$1.3 million) a year. Other estimates run higher.

Britain's Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said there must be a "line of delineation" over who pays the security costs.

Asked whether British taxpayers should fund the Sussexes while they are in Canada, he told Sky News television: "I don't have an easy answer to that."

The couple intend to raise their own income streams. They have launched their new Sussex Royal website and trademarked the name.

However, the queen's senior advisor on heraldry suggested they should not be allowed to use the royal moniker, having relinquished their public duties.

"I don't think it's satisfactory. One cannot be two things at once. You either are (royal) or you're not," Thomas Woodcock, the Garter King of Arms, told The Times newspaper.

In a role that dates back to the 15th century, he is involved in making sure that royal symbols are not used illegitimately for commercial purposes.

Woodcock, who was giving his personal opinion, said the final decision would rest with the sovereign.

- 'Leave them in peace' -

Like Britain, Canada is a Commonwealth realm, meaning Queen Elizabeth is the head of state.

Residents walking dogs on a path near the Sussexes' new home told AFP that they opposed intrusion into their new Canadian set-up, and were proud of the local instinct to give them space.

"We don't like it. Leave them in peace," said Anne Girling, adding she had met Meghan jogging on a trail nearby and they wished one another "good morning."

Sue Starkey, another dog walker, described the area as a "really friendly" community.&nbsp;"Our neighborhood has been so respectful and giving them space," she said.&nbsp;"I'm really happy they're here and I hope they can find some peace."

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle's lawyers warn media as the couple start new life in Canada

Canada's chief medical officer said on Sunday that an individual who was declared the country's first "presumptive" confirmed case of the novel <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-declares-coronavirus-emergency-halts-official-visits-to-mainland-china-276488">coronavirus</a> had developed symptoms on the plane while traveling from Wuhan in China to Toronto.

The province of Ontario health officials on Saturday said a man in his 50s developed a respiratory illness after arriving in Toronto on Jan. 22 from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak of the viral disease, and was being treated in a public hospital and in isolation.

Theresa Tam, Canada's chief health officer, told reporters in Ottawa that the patient had mild symptoms while on the flight, though he did not report his condition after landing at the Toronto airport.

The individual arrived via China Southern Airlines flight CZ311 from Guangzhou to Toronto. Tam said health officials are in the early process of contacting other travelers on that flight.

But Tam said other people on the flight or airport that were not close to the patient should not be overly concerned.

Canada's Health Minister Patty Hajdu told reporters that the National Microbiology Laboratory will take up to 24 hours to confirm the findings in the local laboratory. And once NML tests are confirmed positive, then Canada will announce its first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus.

Foreign minister François-Philippe Champagne on Sunday continued to advise Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to the province of Hubei, including cities of Wuhan, Huanggang, and Ezhou due to the travel restrictions imposed by China following the spread of coronavirus.

He said the government is in touch with Canadians in the region and providing assistance to people on the ground. Canada does not have a consular presence in Wuhan, the statement added.

Canada is on high alert to prevent the spread of coronavirus and avoid the repeat of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/tracking-chinas-sars-like-coronavirus-275537">SARS</a>, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, that killed 44 people in Canada, the only country outside Asia to report deaths from that virus in 2002-2003. Government health officials say Canada is better prepared this time.

China's National Health Commission said on Sunday the ability of the new coronavirus to spread is strengthening and infections could continue to rise after more than 2,000 people were infected in China and 56 have died.

Hundreds of wildfires in Australia have killed 29 people since September, as well as an estimated 1 billion animals while incinerating 2,500 homes and a total area of bushland&nbsp;one-third the size of Germany.

Jacob Morris, a 28-year-old&nbsp;indigenous&nbsp;man, has conducted fire workshops to teach&nbsp;traditional&nbsp;land&nbsp;management ways, and believes that a lot of Australia's grief&nbsp;could&nbsp;have been avoided by using what is known as "cultural" or "cool&nbsp;burning".

To revitalise the&nbsp;land&nbsp;for farming or hunting purposes, the practice involves lighting low-intensity fires to burn off bushland.

On some privately held&nbsp;land&nbsp;near the bushfire hit town of Nowra, about 150 kilometers (93 miles) south of Sydney, areas where&nbsp;traditional&nbsp;burning&nbsp;had been used were greener and less affected by the&nbsp;bushfires, according to Morris.

"When we light the fire we actually walk with it," Morris said, as he showed Reuters how it was done on a patch of grass, adding that the lie of the&nbsp;land&nbsp;and wind direction were key factors to consider because they affected a fire's intensity.

Usually, the fire is controllable and burns for a short period of time, which&nbsp;helps to prevent future fires or at least, slows down their rate of spread, Morris said.&nbsp;

The same ways are practiced by&nbsp;indigenous&nbsp;groups across the globe, said Jordan Profeit, a Yukon first nation fireman visiting Australia from Canada on a knowledge exchange program.&nbsp;

Australia's rural fire service and other&nbsp;land&nbsp;management organisations have begun to consult with&nbsp;indigenous&nbsp;groups as part of their&nbsp;burning&nbsp;regimes. But calls are rising for more&nbsp;indigenous&nbsp;oversight of fires and&nbsp;land&nbsp;management.

David Bowman, a professor of fire science at the University of Tasmania, said: "cultural&nbsp;burning" tended to be used for smallholdings, whereas fire services conducted hazard reduction&nbsp;burning&nbsp;operations on a larger scale.

Ultimately, he said, the choice of method would come down to funding.

Indigenous Australians say traditional land burning could help counter bushfires

&nbsp;A group of nine people went riding near the river exits of Saint-Jean lake. While on the trip the ice broke underneath them in the dark.

Five people missing and one found dead after the snowmobiles broke the ice and went into the freezing water in Northern Quebec, said the police.

The group hired <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/look-what-nick-jonas-got-for-priyanka-chopra-this-christmas-270431">snowmobiles</a> in the village of Saint-Michel-des-Saints, the lake often has a thick layer of ice, but it is thinner where the lake funnels into the Saguenay River.

The group was alerted by two people who rescued the third one from the water. The area was approved for snowmobiles said police spokesman Hugues Beaulieu told AFP.

Benoit L'Esperance of Montreal, a 42-year-old guide was pulled out of the water by the emergency response team and was admitted to the hospital but couldn't survive overnight, Beaulieu said, adding "five French tourists are still missing."

Other people were rescued and are in the hospital near the town of Alma and are getting treated for their injuries.

Two helicopters and Divers searched the area with the help of the police and the army on Wednesday.

"This sector was not part of a marked trail, they were off-piste," said the police spokesman.

Authorities searched throughout the night, the underwater and aerial reconnaissance was to pause until Thursday morning.

"People who know the area know that you should not go on the ice because it is very fragile due to strong currents," Gaetan Gagne, president of the Saint-Jean lake snowmobile club, told public broadcaster Radio-Canada.

However the priority, she told a press briefing, "is to find the missing as soon as possible."

"The government has been in contact since this morning with the French authorities and the families will be notified," she added.

Snowmobiles are powerful and can reach a speed of 140 kilometers per hour, are popular with Quebecers and tourists, it causes numerous accidents every year.

33000 kilometers are marked for the snowmobiling trails in the Canadian province, some think that the incident will harm the tourist attraction of the place, a snowmobile is particularly famous amongst them.

A group of nine people went riding near the river exits of Saint-Jean lake. While on the trip the ice broke underneath them in the dark. Five people missing and one found dead after the snowmobiles broke the ice and went into the freezing water in Northern Quebec, said the police. The group hired snowmobiles in the village of Saint-Michel-des-Saints, the lake often has a thick layer of ice, but it is thinner where the lake funnels into the Saguenay River. The group was alerted by two people who rescued the third one from the water. The area was approved for snowmobiles said police spokesman Hugues Beaulieu told AFP. Benoit L'Esperance of Montreal, a 42-year-old guide was pulled out of the water by the emergency response team and was admitted to the hospital but couldn't survive overnight, Beaulieu said, adding "five French tourists are still missing." Other people were rescued and are in the hospital near the town of Alma and are getting treated for their injuries. However the priority, she told a press briefing, "is to find the missing as soon as possible." "The government has been in contact since this morning with the French authorities and the families will be notified," she added. Australia's Transport Safety Bureau is yet to send a team to investigate the crash. They will be looking for evidence for crash and eye-witnesses.

Air tankers like these typically carry 15,000 litres of water or fire retardant to be released over fires, which can help contain blazes in areas ground crews find hard to reach.
