Three suicide bombings killed at least three people in Ugandan capital Kampala on Tuesday. Dozens have been arrested in the bombings in a country that is seen as a stable bulwark against Islamic extremism in Africa.

At least 33 people were being treated in hospital, including five who were in critical condition, police spokesperson Fred Enanga said.

The death toll including the three bombers was six, Enanga said.

A diplomat told Reuters two police were among the victims. Enanga confirmed the death toll included police but declined to give further details.

"A booming sound like that from a big gun went off. The ground shook, my ears nearly went deaf," said Peter Olupot, a 28-year-old bank guard who was near the attack close to parliament.

Blasts in Uganda: Suicide bombers target capital Kampala, IS links suspected

At the gravesides, mourner Gul Ahmad told AFP of his grief over his brother's slaying: "He had two little children. He had a home to live in. He had everything. The pain of the loss cannot be described with words."

The all-male crowd brought body after body, shrouded in white sheets, as a dust storm was whipped up by the constant digging.

"The world will remember this. The Islamic world will remember this barbarism, specifically the dignified people of Afghanistan," warned another mourner, Muhammad Agha.

A blast has taken place in a Shiite mosque in southern Afghan city of Kandahar. It has taken place on the day of weekly Friday prayers. Cause of the blast at the Imam Bargah Fatemiya Mosque was not immediately clear but a&nbsp;Taliban official claimed that this was a suicide bombing.

As per heade of Public Health Department of Kandahar, 41&nbsp;people have been&nbsp;killed and 80&nbsp;have been injured. Number of casualties is feared to rise.

No group has taken responsibility for it so far.

Eywitnesses have been quoted saying&nbsp;that three explosions were heard, one at the main door of the mosque, another at a southern area, and a third where worshippers wash themselves.

The mosque was full of people at the time of the explosions, and at least 15 ambulances went to the scene shortly after the blast.

The incident also drew condemnation from former Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

"Former President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai has strongly condemned the suicide attack on the Imam Bargah Fatemiya Mosque in Kandahar, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of many of our compatriots, as a crime against humanity. The former president called for peace, stability and unity in Afghanistan," he tweeted.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bomb, which occurred in Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz province, but Islamic State terrorists have a long history of assaulting Afghanistan's Shia minority.&nbsp;

Body parts were seen surrounded by rubble inside the mosque, which is utilised by the minority Shia Muslim population.&nbsp;

"We have received more than 100 wounded patients and over 55&nbsp;dead bodies, but the number will change. We are still receiving more people," said a Doctors Without Borders (MSF) hospital worker, who did not want to be named.

Shias account for about 20% of the Afghan population.

The Taliban have said that they had destroyed an Islamic State cell in the Afghan capital, hours after a suspected IS attack on a mosque killed five people.

This was the first series of blasts in eastern Nangarhar province since the Taliban takeover.

Jalalabad is the capital of Nangarhar, the heartland of Afghanistan’s Islamic State group, which claimed responsibility for a bloody attack that killed more than 100 people at Kabul airport at the end of August.

The Taliban returned to power in mid-August after ousting the former government.

Pictures circulating in the local media showed a green pick-up truck with a white Taliban flag surrounded by debris as armed fighters looked on.

A video shared on the Telegram messaging app showed a column of smoke billowing from a fire before a powerful explosion sent flames shooting out. Another video showed debris flying through the sky in long arcs as the fire raged.&nbsp;

The defence ministry said that a fire had broken out at the Jambyl ammunitions depot and "quickly spread to storage facilities where engineering ammunition is stored."

Several explosions followed, the defence ministry said.

"The explosions stopped over time, but the fire continues," the statement added.&nbsp;

Regular incidents at Kazakhstan's Soviet-era military depots have proved a headache for the government in recent years, with another depot near the southern town of Arys seeing three lethal explosions take place in the last decade.

The defence ministry noted that some of the munitions stored at the Soviet-era depot in Jambyl had been transferred from the facility in Arys, where there have been calls to resettle the town's entire population of 45,000.

The emergencies ministry said that the scattering radius of the fragments was up to two kilometres (1.25 miles).&nbsp;

"According to preliminary data, more than 500 tonnes of trinitrotoluene (TNT) were stored in the warehouse," the ministry said.&nbsp;

The defence ministry said that two of the men who died were part of a fire brigade at the base who were attempting to put out the blaze, while a third was guarding the depot at the time of the explosions.&nbsp;

Defence Minister Nurlan Ermekbayev said Friday that he would leave his post over the incident if President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev accepted his resignation.

The Jambyl regional government said that of more than 80 who received treatment for injuries, 28 remained in hospital with six in serious condition.

But "their lives are not in danger," the statement said.

On Thursday, President Tokayev had said on Twitter that the injured were soldiers and emergency services workers.

Local authorities said more than 80 children were among those evacuated from nearby villages following the incident. Around 1,200 people were taken to schools in Taraz, a city of over 300,000 people, which is about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the facility.&nbsp;

"One&nbsp;year&nbsp;after&nbsp;the tragic events,&nbsp;children's lives remain deeply affected," said Yukie Mokuo,&nbsp;UNICEF's representative in&nbsp;Lebanon.

"Those families have been struggling to recover from the aftermath of the explosions at the worst possible time – in the middle of a devastating economic crisis and a major pandemic."&nbsp;

A&nbsp;UNICEF&nbsp;survey in July found that almost all families that requested assistance in the wake of the Beirut port&nbsp;blast&nbsp;still&nbsp;need help, especially cash and food assistance, the agency said.

Many who lost employment because of the&nbsp;blast&nbsp;have yet to find work,&nbsp;UNICEF&nbsp;added, as&nbsp;Lebanon&nbsp;grapples with soaring poverty, rampant inflation and shortages of basic items from medicine to fuel.&nbsp;

"Children's lives are at risk as the escalating crisis is leaving most families unable to afford their basic needs," Mokuo said.&nbsp;

Firefighters, search and rescue crews, and police officers were rushed to the scene of the blast immediately. In addition to this, pollution detection experts were also called to assess if the smoke coming from the blast site could pose a deadly effect on locals of the area.

As soon as the blast happened, authorities urged locals to stay indoors as thick black smoke started rising in the area. The NINA warning app sent an alert to locals of the area and asked them to close their doors and windows. Locals were also asked to keep emergency numbers free as much as possible to make sure those in need are able to reach out to the authorities.

Out of the 16, two injured people are reported to be in serious condition and four others have been reported missing by local authorities.

The incident took place at Chempark's landfill and waste incineration area in Leverkusen's Buerrig district.

Authorities have assured that all resources are being used to ensure "rescue efforts continue at full speed".

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident and the death of an employee," Currenta said in a statement.

Cut to 1967, ISRO (then known as INCOSPAR) was in its nascent stage and operated out of a small church in the Thumba Fishing hamlet, in Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram.

Most of the scientists working there were young graduates with a drive to experiment and learn as much as they could about a new discipline - Rocket science.

All they had were experimental rockets (known as sounding rockets) that were fired to an altitude of 100kms or less.

Most of these sounding rockets were offered by friendly foreign countries to conduct upper-atmospheric experiments.

For perspective, the sounding rockets of that era are a molehill when compared to the mountains (the PSLV and GSLV series) that ISRO launches today.&nbsp;

While preparing for the launch of one such French Centaure rocket, a gunpowder-based igniter was being made by an ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan.

Once at the right altitude, the igniter would trigger a small explosion and release the rocket’s chemical payload into the atmosphere, thus helping conduct the experiment.

However, one day before the launch, Narayanan came across a scientific principle that their gunpowder would not fire at the height of 100km.

When Narayanan apprised Kalam of the same, he initially refused to accept it. But later, on Narayanan’s persuasion, the duo went on to test the theory.&nbsp;

The duo set up a contraption where a sealed jar of gunpowder was connected to a vacuum pump (to create upper atmosphere-like thin air and low pressure). Multiple attempts were made to ignite it, but the 1942 theory by scientists Able and Noble was dead right!

Wanting to see up-close, this phenomenon of gunpowder behaving in an inert manner, a young Kalam poked his nose into the gunpowder-laden jar. The countdown had started and the assistant was ready to ignite the gunpowder, but that’s when Nambi Narayanan realized that the vacuum pump was not properly connected to the jar.

This meant that the gunpowder would explode as usual.

Within a second, Nambi Narayanan leapt across and pushed Kalam down to safety, before a blast rocked the room and glass splinters flew all across. After the smoke had settled, Kalam sat up and told Nambi, "See, it fired". This was how the young duo proved that Able and Noble were right and also that gunpowder would fire at normal pressure.&nbsp;

While Abdul Kalam later went on to work in various roles in ISRO, DRDO, and other government organizations, Nambi Narayanan went on to become the Father of Liquid Propulsion Rocket Engine Technology in India.

Narayanan and his team had developed the Vikas Engine (which was based on the French Viking engine)-a pioneering piece of technology that is still a crucial part of the PSLV and GSLV rockets even today.

It is noteworthy that Kalam was a proponent of solid-propulsion (using solid fuels) whereas Nambi Narayanan was a proponent of liquid-propellant rockets. Nambi always believed that India had to focus on liquid propulsion, in order to build heavy-lift capability rockets.

Eventually, Nambi’s expertise and foresight in liquid propulsion proved right and gave birth to India’s PSLV and GSLV rockets, whereas Kalam’s expertise in solid propulsion gave India its arsenal of missiles.

Nambi Narayanan was heading India’s Cryogenic engine development programme in 1994 when he was wrongly jailed and tortured by the Kerala Police and Intelligence bureau.

This was a fabricated spy case, known as the ISRO spy case. The Supreme Court of India had cleared Nambi of all charges and the government of India had awarded him the Padma Bhushan. The investigation into a larger conspiracy by the Kerala Police (during the then Congress-led Govt) and Intelligence Bureau officials is underway today.
