A nearby school was rattled by the blast with more than 300 students in attendance, health authorities said. At least 15 children were reported injured as of late Friday evening, the health ministry said, and one child had died.

Cuba's tourism minister, Juan Carlos Garcia, said no foreigners were killed or injured in the blast, according to initial reports.

The blast shrouded the building and surrounding streets in plumes of black smoke and dust rising from the rubble.

Hundreds of Cubans and tourists alike gathered near the property under a hot sun as police cordoned off the area around the hotel. Many speculated about the cause of the blast as ambulances and rescue workers carried victims from the wreckage.

Cuba's tourism minister, Juan Carlos Garcia, said no foreigners were killed or injured in the blast, according to initial reports.

The hotel, housed in a more than century-old building, had been closed and only workers were inside at time of the explosion, state-run TV said, citing Roberto Enrique Calzadilla, a representative of the military-run company.

"The bombs were placed inside the vans; due to those blasts nine have been killed and 13 injured," Mohammad Asif Wazeri, spokesman of Mazar-e-Sharif's commander told Reuters.

The public transport vans were operated and used by the local Shi'ite community, he added.

Islamic State often targets Shi'ite community, a minority Muslim sect in Afghanistan. Islamic State has also posed challenges for the Taliban who currently assume power in a country ravaged by war for decades.

Taliban authorities who took over after the Western pullout said earlier this week they had eliminated most of Islamic State's presence in Afghanistan. But despite the assertion, attacks against Shi'ites continue in many parts of the country.

It is the 11th terrorist attack in Afghanistan in the last ten days.

In today's blast, a Sufi mosque/Khanqah in Kabul's Darul Aman district was attacked during congregational prayers.

The death toll is expected to be "huge."

According to some reports, the mosque's roof fell as a result of the explosion.&nbsp;

A nurse at a neighbouring hospital who did not want to be identified claimed the incident had left several injured individuals in severe condition.

In recent weeks, a number of Afghan civilians have been killed in bombings, some of which have been claimed by the Islamic State.

Since taking power in August, Afghanistan's Taliban rulers claim to have secured the country and mostly eradicated the Islamic State's local offshoot, but international authorities and analysts fear the potential of militancy return remains.

The Shia religious minority has been targeted in many of the attacks, but Sunni mosques have also been targeted.
