<p>According to the French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, the incident happened on Rue Saint-Jacques in the fifth arrondissement, close to the Jardin Du Luxembourg and Sorbonne University, just before 5:00 pm (1500 GMT) on Wednesday (June 21).</p>

<p>“We heard an incredible, very loud explosion at around 5 pm, we felt the force of it. We thought this isn’t a storm, this is serious. We heard the fire services. I went out to see if I could help. But it’s all shut-off," a local pharmacist and witness to the accident was quoted as saying by The Guardian.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>French media reports, citing nearby residents, reported a loud explosion preceding the fire. Meanwhile, French prosecutors said the cause of the fire still remains unknown. They are investigating whether the blast was the result of a failure to observe safety norms or not.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Not the first instance&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Notably, this wasn't the first instance of a building collapsing after an explosion in France. In April this year, a similar incident was reported in the port city of Marseille. A five-floor building, located in an old quarter in the centre of France’s second-largest city collapsed after midnight.</p>

<p>Reuters news agency reported that its correspondent saw a smoke trail of two missiles in the air. However, it is not clear if those missiles were fired by Russia or Ukraine.</p>

<p>Visuals aired by Reuters television purportedly showed the African leaders arriving in Kyiv in a convoy of cars and entering a hotel to use its air-raid shelter.</p>

<p>The leaders had begun their visit with a trip to Bucha, near Kyiv, which is one of several places where Ukraine says Russian troops committed large-scale atrocities following their full-scale invasion in February 2022. Russia denies the allegations.</p>

<p>Kyiv says its own peace initiative, which envisages the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian land, must be the basis for any settlement of the war.</p>

<p>The van which exploded was parked in the corner of the street. The explosion of the van sparked a series of reactions setting five vehicles on fire.</p>

<p>According to an eyewitness, the driver of the van jumped out of the vehicle in the nick of time after he noticed that it has caught fire and hence, he only sustained injuries in his hand and leg.</p>

<p>As per reports, a nearby apartment building and pharmacy also caught fire.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the newspaper, around five cars and four mopeds were set alight. Before firefighters reached&nbsp;at the scene to tackle the blast, the city's Porta Romana area was&nbsp;cordoned off by police.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a 39-year-old labourer who was working nearby, Giuseppe said, "I heard three big explosions and more that followed. I came straight away to see what was happening, and the whole street was on fire, people were running."</p>

<p>The Swedish prosecutor, who was carrying the Nord Stream sabotage attack's investigation, said the “clear main scenario” was that there was the involvement of a state-sponsored group, as he expressed his doubt over theories that suggested an independent group's involvement in the pipeline blasts.</p>

<p>Mats Ljungqvist, speaking to Reuters on Thursday, said that although theoretically there is a possibility of a non-state-backed plot, the kind of explosive used in the blasts ruled out a “large portion of actors.”</p>

<p>As per a report by United Nations, the three underwater explosions that destroyed the gas link between Germany, Russia and the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm on September 26, 2022, had the power of several hundred kilograms of explosives.</p>

<p>Traces of explosives found by Swedish investigators on various objects were examined by them but they have not named the type used. According to the estimate of analysts, the blasts were powered by the equivalent of 300-350 kg of Semtex or 400-500 kg of TNT. Semtex is a plastic explosive which is generally used in commercial blasting.</p>

<p>German Institute for International and Security Affairs security specialist Goran Swistek said, “That is a huge amount of explosives and not something you could pilfer from a building site or something that a trader on the black market would have sitting in their garage.”</p>

<p>Dismissing the theories around the Nord Stream pipeline blasts, the prosecutor called all the speculations "politically motivated". “The incident has obviously become an open arena for different influence attempts,” said Ljungqvist.</p>

<p>“These speculations do not have an impact on the ongoing investigation, which is grounded in facts and the information which has emerged from analyses, crime scene investigations and collaboration with authorities in Sweden and other countries,” he added.</p>

<p>Swistek said that the comments of the prosecutor suggested that his scepticism of the usage of a 15-metre yacht for carrying out the sabotage attack was shared by the investigators.</p>

<p>“We are working unconditionally, turning over every stone and leaving nothing to chance. Our hope is to be able to confirm who has committed this crime but it should be noted that it likely will be difficult given the circumstances,” Ljungqvist said.</p>
