<p>A bomb blast on Sunday (July 30) in Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province claimed the lives of at least 44 people and wounded over 200 others. The explosion hit a convention of the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) in the Khar tehsil Bajaur district .</p>

<p>No group has yet claimed responsibility for the deadly bomb blast, but as per local media reports, the local chapter of the Islamic State (IS) group has carried out attacks against JUI-F in the recent past.</p>

<p>The district emergency officer told Geo News that a local JUI-F leader was also among those killed in the blast.</p>

<p>The official confirmed the name of the deceased as Amir Ziaullah Jan.</p>

<p>As per local media reports, the explosion occurred at a place inside the convention and law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the area.</p>

<p>While speaking to Geo News, JUI-F leader Hafiz Hamdullah said he was also supposed to attend the convention but could not do so because of some personal commitments.</p>

<p>“I strongly condemn the blast and want to give a message to the people behind it that this is not jihad but terrorism,” said the JUI-F &nbsp;leader, adding that the incident was an attack on humanity and Bajaur, Dawn reported.</p>

<p>Riaz Anwar, the health minister for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province said that at least 17 people who had sustained injuries in the explosion were in serious condition.</p>

<p>"I can confirm that in the hospital we have 39 dead bodies, with 123 wounded that includes 17 patients in a serious condition," he told news agency AFP.</p>

<p>"It was a suicide attack, with the bomber detonating himself in close proximity to the stage," he added.</p>

<h2><strong>Tent collapsed and trapped people trying to escape, recalls survivor&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>"The tent had collapsed on one side, trapping people who were desperately attempting to escape," AFP quoted Abdullah Khan, who tried to help the victims, as saying.</p>

<p>"There was utter confusion, with human flesh, limbs, and body parts scattered throughout the area, alongside lifeless bodies."</p>

<p>Sabeeh Ullah, a 24-year-old party supporter whose arm got fractured in the incident, said the scale of injuries was frightening. "I found myself lying next to someone who had lost their limbs. The air was filled with the smell of human flesh," he told AFP.</p>

<h2><strong>Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemns attack</strong></h2>

<p>Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif released a statement, strongly condemning the attack targeted at the JUI-F convention, saying that the terrorists aimed at the ones who advocated the cause of Islam, the Holy Quran and Pakistan.</p>

<p>“Terrorists are enemies of Pakistan and they will be eliminated,” he said, adding that elements involved in the incident would be meted out strict punishment.</p>

<p>Later he took to Twitter, now rebranded as X, and said that the enemies who were attacking the political parties showed they were against Pakistan’s democratic system.</p>

<p>Reportedly, following the hearing, Humenyuk barricaded himself inside a bathroom and threw an explosive device at two guards. Their prompt actions prevented him from escaping the building.</p>

<p>As law enforcement officers fired into the air to contain the situation, Humenyuk retreated into another room within the courthouse. Refusing to engage in negotiations with officials, he further resorted to violence by hurling another explosive device, injuring two officers in the process.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, the altercation ended with Humenyuk losing his life. An investigation is now underway to determine how he had come into possession of the explosives within the courtroom premises.</p>

<p>French media reports, citing nearby residents, reported a loud explosion preceding the fire. Meanwhile, French prosecutors said the cause of the fire still remains unknown. They are investigating whether the blast was the result of a failure to observe safety norms or not.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two explosions rocked Kyiv on Friday after air raid sirens sounded and air defences were activated on the day African leaders landed in the capital city to initiate a peace process and mediate between Russia and Ukraine.</p>

<p>Ramaphosa, who is visiting Ukraine for the first time since the start of&nbsp;Russia's full-scale invasion of the country, will hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky&nbsp;on Friday before travelling to St. Petersburg on Saturday for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.</p>

<p>The mission is being launched shortly after the start of a Ukrainian counteroffensive that has pushed Russian forces back in some areas, though Kyiv has regained only a fraction of the territory Russian forces occupy in Ukraine.</p>

<p>Kyiv says its own peace initiative, which envisages the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian land, must be the basis for any settlement of the war.</p>

<p>The van which exploded was parked in the corner of the street. The explosion of the van sparked a series of reactions setting five vehicles on fire.</p>

<p>According to an eyewitness, the driver of the van jumped out of the vehicle in the nick of time after he noticed that it has caught fire and hence, he only sustained injuries in his hand and leg.</p>

<p>As per reports, a nearby apartment building and pharmacy also caught fire.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the newspaper, around five cars and four mopeds were set alight. Before firefighters reached&nbsp;at the scene to tackle the blast, the city's Porta Romana area was&nbsp;cordoned off by police.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a 39-year-old labourer who was working nearby, Giuseppe said, "I heard three big explosions and more that followed. I came straight away to see what was happening, and the whole street was on fire, people were running."</p>

<p>The footage shared by the fire service showed a powerful blast which burned out a dozen parked cars. Many canisters were visible on the street between the remains of a destroyed vehicle.</p>

<p>As per a report by United Nations, the three underwater explosions that destroyed the gas link between Germany, Russia and the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm on September 26, 2022, had the power of several hundred kilograms of explosives.</p>

<p>Traces of explosives found by Swedish investigators on various objects were examined by them but they have not named the type used. According to the estimate of analysts, the blasts were powered by the equivalent of 300-350 kg of Semtex or 400-500 kg of TNT. Semtex is a plastic explosive which is generally used in commercial blasting.</p>

<p>German Institute for International and Security Affairs security specialist Goran Swistek said, “That is a huge amount of explosives and not something you could pilfer from a building site or something that a trader on the black market would have sitting in their garage.”</p>

<p>Dismissing the theories around the Nord Stream pipeline blasts, the prosecutor called all the speculations "politically motivated". “The incident has obviously become an open arena for different influence attempts,” said Ljungqvist.</p>

<p>“These speculations do not have an impact on the ongoing investigation, which is grounded in facts and the information which has emerged from analyses, crime scene investigations and collaboration with authorities in Sweden and other countries,” he added.</p>

<p>Swistek said that the comments of the prosecutor suggested that his scepticism of the usage of a 15-metre yacht for carrying out the sabotage attack was shared by the investigators.</p>

<p>Attackers from the al Shabaab group charged into the block that houses the office of Mogadishu's mayor around noon and got caught in a firefight with security forces, the ministry and witnesses said.</p>

<p>Security killed six of the militants and cleared the area by about 6pm local time, the ministry said on its Facebook page.</p>

<p>Al Shabaab has stepped up attacks in a show of resilience since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's government launched an offensive against the al Qaeda-linked group in August.</p>

<p>"We were in the office and we were deafened by a blast. We ran out. Gunfire followed," Farah Abdullahi, who works in the mayor's office, told Reuters.</p>

<p>Abdikadir Abdirahman, director of Aamin Ambulance Services, gave a higher estimate of the death count, saying it had transported the bodies of eight civilian victims.</p>

<p>At least another 16 people were injured in the attack, he added.</p>

<p>The mayor's office is in the local government headquarters building in a well-guarded area of Mogadishu.</p>

<p>In a sign the government was expanding its offensive against the group into the country's south, state TV for Jubbaland, one of the country's semi-autonomous states, reported on Sunday that regional and Somalia federal forces had launched attacks on al Shabaab and taken control of the town of Janay Abdale from the militants.</p>

<p>However, the researchers found something else entirely. They traced the blast from a kilonava— a rare event that happens after the merger of a neutron star with either another star or a black hole.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to astronomers, these events happen very rarely.</p>

<p>“This event represents an exciting paradigm shift for gamma-ray-burst astronomy,” said Jillian Rastinejad, a doctoral candidate in the Northwestern University Department of Physics and Astronomy who led the research, in a statement.</p>

<p>According to them, the blast, which has been named GRB 211211A, was relatively long with more infrared light than expected.</p>

<p>Astronomers believe that the explosion produced elements such as gold and platinum.</p>

<p>The researchers’ findings also found that this event produced heavy elements that amounted to roughly 1000 times the mass of our Earth.</p>

<p>“When we followed this long gamma-ray burst, we expected it would lead to evidence of a massive star collapse,” said Northwestern’s Wen-fai Fong, a senior author on the study.</p>
