The Indian grappler took a 2-0 lead in the first period and all the pressure was on the Punia's opponent heading into the last three minutes. Punia was in good form in this match. In the final three minutes, he managed to hold his own and he kept his opponent at bay to walk away with the gold.

The Pakistani wrestler struggled to find a way through Punia's strong defence and went home without scoring a point.

Meanwhile, Bajrang Punia established his superiority in the men's freestyle 65kg division, winning the gold medal by beating Lachlan McNeil of Canada 9-2 in the final.&nbsp;

Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Punia, who won a gold medal four years ago in Gold Coast, Australia came out with aggressive intentions and did not allow his young Canadian opponent many chances, forcing two takedowns in the first period itself to go 4-0 up.

"I am very happy with my performance here. I had come here to win the gold medal and did that. It's nice to win the gold medal because I am participating in an event of this stature for the first time after coming back from an injury I suffered during the Tokyo Olympics," Punia said after his victory.

Now, India's cyclist Meenakshi was at the receiving end of an awful crash&nbsp;during the women’s 10km scratch race, at the same venue,&nbsp;in&nbsp;Birmingham 2022. The Indian athlete fell from her bike before sliding down the banking on the bend. Adding to her woes, she was run over by a New Zealand&nbsp;rival --&nbsp;Bryony Botha -- who also fell off her bike and injured herself. As a result, both the cyclists were taken out of the race, however,&nbsp;Meenakshi was taken off on a stretcher.

The much-awaited Commonwealth Games 2022 edition has kicked off in Birmingham on Friday (July 29). The showpiece event started with an eye-catching opening ceremony in Birmingham where PV Sindhu and men's hockey captain Manpreet Singh were India's flagbearers.

The Indian contingent comprises several star athletes such as Sindhu, Manpreet Singh-led Indian men's hockey team, Bajrang Punia, Mirabai Chanu, etc. The mega event is a special one for the cricket fans as well as the sport makes its return at the event&nbsp;this time around. For the unversed, cricket was part of the 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpur. Back then, India failed to even enter the semi-finals -- under Ajay Jadeja -- as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand clinched gold, silver and bronze, respectively. This is the first edition where the women's cricket is part of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Quadrennial Games.

CWG 2022: 'Hope this takes.....' - Sachin Tendulkar reacts as cricket returns in showpiece event

The Indian women`s table tennis team started its defence of the title it won four years ago at Gold Coast by outplaying South Africa 3-0 in a Group 2 preliminary round match at Hall 3 at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Solihull, here on Friday. 
 
The team spearheaded by star paddler Manika Batra did not have to break a sweat as it handed South Africa a comprehensive defeat. Manika won her singles match in straight games against Musfiquh Kalam, Reeth Tennison and Sreeja Akula won the doubles while Sreeja Akula overcame Danisha Patel for a comprehensive 3-0 win for the favourites. 
 
Reeth and Sreeja set the ball rolling for India as they defeated the South African pair of Laitaa Edwards and Danisha Jayavant Patel 11-7, 11-7, 11-5. Reeth and Sreeja took an early lead in each of the three games in the best of five games match and did not allow their lower-ranked opponents many chances. 
 
Manika Batra was at the table for the first singles game and thoroughly outplayed her opponent, Musfiquh Kalam, allowing her to win only 10 points combined in the three games, romping to an 11-5, 11-3, 11-2 win in double quick time. 
 
Sreeja took to the table for the second single and defeated Danisha Patel 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-6) to seal victory for India in the best-of-five match in Group 2 in which Guyana and Fiji are India`s other opponents besides South Africa.

Though their opponents were not so strong, Manika Batra said they went in strong as they wanted to get their rhythm going early. `It was not too tough, we went in as if to play our best to prepare for the next round,` said Manika after the match. 
 
The highest-seeded Indian woman player is the star attraction of the table tennis competition after bagging gold in team and women`s singles competition at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018. However, Manika said she did not feel any pressure of the heightened expectations following her Gold Coast heroics. 
 
`I always go into a tournament thinking that is a new tournament and whatever happened in the previous one has no bearing on this. Pressure will always be there, after all, I am a player. But I try to look ahead and keep my focus,` said Manika after the match. 
 
She said they have a young team as the others are playing in their first Commonwealth Games and she tries to talk to them and share her experiences so that they can learn from that.

The Commonwealth Games 2022 edition is set to get underway on July 29 (Friday) in Birmingham, England. The forthcoming edition has been keenly awaited by many Indian sports fanatics, especially after seeing the Indian contingnent's performance in the last year's Tokyo Olympics.

Team India is a strong squad comprising several star athletes, such as PV Sindhu, Manpreet Singh-led India men's hockey team and Savita Punia's women's hockey line-up, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Manika Batra, Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain, Bajrang Punia, etc.

Neeraj Chopra, India's star javelin thrower, misses out due to a groin injury, nonetheless, there is enough firepower in the Indian contingent to impress in the upcoming event in Birmingham. Ahead of the opening ceremony, to be held&nbsp;at the Alexander Stadium, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) named Sindhu as the flagbearer, followed by Manpreet Singh.

Being handed over such a huge responsibility, Sindhu said after the announcement on Wednesday (July 27), "It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer."&nbsp;

CWG 2022: From PV Sindhu to Bajrang Punia! Full schedule of Indian athletes in showpiece event

The first match of the women's cricket T20 competition in Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will see India taking on Australia. The matches will be held at the Edgbaston Stadium from July 29, with the bronze and gold medal games taking place on August 7.

According to England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the first match on the schedule will see Australia take on India in the early session, with Pakistan playing Barbados -- recently confirmed as the team from the West Indies that will take part in the Commonwealth Games.

The host nation team for the Games, Team England, will be in action for the first time on July 30 when they take on the winner of a qualifying tournament which is due to take place at the start of 2022.

They will then play South Africa in the early session on August 2, followed by a third match against New Zealand in the evening session on August 4.

Other highlights on the schedule include India against Pakistan on July 31 and Australia will also take on Pakistan on August 3.7 out of 8 qualifiers for the cricket T20 competition were announced back in April with the final team set to be finalised at the end of January 2022.

ICC Acting Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said: "We have seen tremendous growth of the women's game over the past few years and the Commonwealth Games will undoubtedly be another major moment on that journey."

Today's announcement of the match schedule gives fans lots to look forward to, not least with the opening game between ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2020 finalists Australia and India and we know that Edgbaston will provide a great stage for the competition.
