The Israeli Army has said that its military operations in southern Gaza likely contributed to Hamas' decision to kill six hostages in August. The victims' bodies were discovered in an underground shaft in Rafah during Israeli operations.

An Israeli military investigation into the deaths of the six hostages — identified as Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi and Ori Danino — revealed that the advancement of Israeli ground forces prompted Hamas to "murder them".
Israeli "ground activities in the area, although gradual and cautious, had a circumstantial influence on the terrorists' decision to murder the six hostages," the army said in a statement on Tuesday (Dec 24).

Following the army's statement, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum urged swift action to secure the release of all remaining hostages. They called for a clear agreement ensuring the return of hostages within a set timeframe.
"The time has come to bring back all the hostages. We need a deal that will ensure the return of all hostages within a quick and predetermined timeframe," said the group in a statement.
<h2>Ceasefire negotiations in the works</h2>
Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and the release of hostages continue in Doha, mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States.
Israeli negotiators recently returned from Qatar after what Netanyahu’s office described as a "significant" round of talks. 
On Monday, Netanyahu also informed parliament that there had been "some progress" in the discussions.

Hamas and other Palestinian groups have also reported advancements toward a ceasefire. 
The war began on October 7, sparked by a Hamas attack on Israel that claimed 1,208 lives and resulted in 251 hostages being taken, 96 of which still remain in captivity in Gaza.
Israeli officials claim that 34 of these hostages are deceased.
The retaliatory Israeli campaign has resulted in over 45,000 deaths in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry, whose figures are considered reliable by the United Nations.

Israel probe finds Hamas 'murdered' hostages in fear of advancing ground troops

As negotiations continue between Israel and the Hamas militant group to reach a deal, the group has still not given a list of living and dead hostages to be released in the first phase of a potential ceasefire-hostage deal, Israeli media, Kan public broadcaster reported.&nbsp;

It added that the Hamas is resisting pressure from mediators.&nbsp;

According to Israeli officials, Hamas is hoping for a "dramatic achievement" in the negotiations before providing the list, Channel 12 news reported.&nbsp;

The Israeli official told The Jerusalem Post, "Hamas has yet to deliver the list of hostages who are alive – without it, it’s impossible to reach a deal."&nbsp;

The official continued that although the mediators are pushing the militant group to deliver the list, Mohammed Sinwar, one of the key figures of Hamas in Gaza is refusing to share the list.&nbsp;

The official added that it was a long negotiation and that there would be consultations.&nbsp;

“There has been some progress in the talks, but it doesn’t seem a deal is going to be reached soon," the official said.&nbsp;

'Impossible to reach deal without it,' Hamas still hasn't sent list of living, dead hostages to Israel: Report

A former Israeli hostage held by Hamas died due to illness on Tuesday (Dec 24). She was the first to lose her life after being released alongside&nbsp;several others who returned after a hostage exchange deal earlier.

Nir Oz Kibbutz issued a statement announcing the demise of Hanna Katzir. She and her son, Elad, were taken hostage by the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

According to news agency AFP, an Israeli government official has said that Katzir has been recognised as a victim of the October attack by Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his condolences to Katzir family. He also said in a statement that he would “work tirelessly to bring all of our hostages home.”

<h2>Who was Hanna Katzir?</h2>

Hanna Katzir, a 76-year-old woman, was one of the hostages captured by Hamas during the October 7 attack in Israel. Earlier, the Palestinian militant group&nbsp;Islamic Jihad claimed that she had died just before a hostage deal, however, later it was discovered that she was released in November.

Israel confirmed for the first time on Monday (Dec 23) that it was involved in the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran back in July this year. Defence Minister Israel Katz’s confirmation came as he issued a threat to Yemen-based Houthi rebel group, which is backed by Israel’s arch-enemy Iran.
"These days, when the Houthi terrorist organisation is firing missiles at Israel, I want to convey a clear message to them at the beginning of my remarks: We have defeated Hamas, we have defeated Hezbollah, we have blinded Iran's defence systems and damaged the production systems, we have toppled the Assad regime in Syria, we have dealt a severe blow to the axis of evil, and we will also deal a severe blow to the Houthi terrorist organisation in Yemen, which remains the last to stand," said the Israeli defence minister.

Netanyahu's comments to the Israeli Parliament came two days after three Palestinian militant groups said in a rare joint statement that a deal for a ceasefire in the Gaza war and to exchange prisoners was "closer than ever."

According to a report by CBS News early Monday (Dec 23), the two recently retired Mossad agents were among those who spearheaded the years-long operation against Hezbollah.

The report said that Mossad's walkie-talkie operation was waging war through deception and trickery, in line with the spy agency's motto. 
Work began on weaponizing the walkie-talkies more than a decade before Israel set them off in September, the report added.
One of the agents, who identified himself as Michael, said that the walkie-talkie was a weapon, "just like a bullet or a missile or a mortar."
Michael said that the battery of the walkie-talkie, which was made in a Mossad facility, included an explosive device. Hezbollah bought more than 16,000 of the exploding devices, some of which were eventually used against them, he added.
The report said that the price of the walkie-talkie could not be too low as Israel did not want Hezbollah to be suspicious. 
Mossad also wanted to hide its identity as the seller and ensure the walkie-talkies couldn't be traced back to Israel. So the spy agency set up shell companies to infiltrate the supply chain.
<h2>Walkie-talkies were just not enough</h2>
CBS News reported that the walkie-talkies were designed to go into the chest pocket of a tactical vest for soldiers.
However, Mossad wanted to plant a device that Hezbollah members would have on them at all times. Hence, the agency began development on booby-trapped pagers in 2022, the second ex-Mossad agent (who chose to identify himself as Gabriel) said.
Gabriel said Mossad learnt that Hezbollah was buying pagers from Gold Apollo, a company based in Taiwan. 
The Gold Apollo pagers were sleek, and shiny and could fit into pockets. Mossad needed a larger pager to fit explosives inside, he added.

Gabriel said that using dummies, Mossad carried out tests with the pager inside a padded glove, held next to the dummy's face, to calibrate the grammes of powdered explosive needed to be just enough to hurt the fighter, but not the person next to him.
The retired Mossad agent said that the plan was to hurt Hezbollah members (with pagers), not people nearby.

After convincing Mossad head Dadi Barnea of the pager's merits, Gabriel pointed out that the pager was advertised in fake ads on YouTube. 
The device was touted as being robust, dustproof, waterproof, and also having a long battery life. Gabriel said that Mossad did such a good job promoting the pager that people outside of Hezbollah wanted to buy it.
He added that Israel set up shell companies to dupe Gold Apollo. Mossad fully manufactured the pagers and had a licensing partnership with Gold Apollo. 
"When they (Hezbollah) are buying from us, they have zero clue that they are buying from the Mossad...," Gabriel said.

Gaza war: Hamas says truce talks in Doha are 'serious and positive'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed holding a phone call with US President-elect Donald Trump, during which he reaffirmed his country’s ‘determination’ to continue acting against Iran and its armed proxies, CNN reported.

Netanyahu said in the video message that he had a “very friendly, very warm, and very important conversation” on Saturday (local time) and told about the need for Israel to “complete its victory.”

“I discussed all of this again last night with my friend, US President-elect Donald Trump,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

“It was a very friendly, very warm and very important conversation. We spoke about the need to complete Israel’s victory, and we also spoke at length about the efforts we are making to free our hostages,” he said as quoted by CNN.

Netanyahu said that Israel continues to “work tirelessly to bring our hostages home, both the living and the dead. And I add, the less we talk about it, the better, and so with God’s help, we will succeed.”

On Sunday, the Israeli Prime Minister took to social media platform X and strongly affirmed that they would “change” the Middle East.

“I said we would change the Middle East and this is what is happening. Syria is not the same as Syria. Lebanon is not the same as Lebanon. Gaza is not the same as Gaza. Iran is not the same Iran,” Netanyahu said in a post on X.

“We are committed to preventing Hezbollah from rearming,” he said. “This is an ongoing test for Israel, we must meet it – and we will meet it. Earlier Wednesday, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot had already said that France considered that some leaders could enjoy immunity from ICC prosecution.

Asked if France would arrest Netanyahu if he stepped on French territory, Jean-Noel Barrot did not give a specific answer in an interview with Franceinfo radio.
