Served poisoned chicken korma to husband before killing in-laws: New claims emerge in Australian mushroom murder case

The Australian government made an announcement on Monday (Aug 4), saying that they will raise the number of international students they allows into the country by 9 per cent in 2026, bringing the total to 295,000 (current cap - 270,000). The Australian government also added that they will give priority to students from Southeast Asia. This decision comes a year after Australia limited the entries of foreign students due to high migration. According to Reuters, in 2026, 25,000 more placements will be offered for the universities with applicants from Southeast Asia being prioritised. Universities may receive more student spots if they can show that they can provide safe and secure housing and increase enrolments from Southeast Asian countries. The move is a part of Australia’s plan to strengthen ties with Southeast Asia and reduce its economic reliance on China. Australian International Education Assistant Minister, Julian Hill, told national broadcaster ABC, that it is important for Australia to build lasting connections with its Southeast Asian neighbours by hosting their top students. The cap does not apply to students who move from Australian high schools to public universities or TAFE (technical and further education).
Why international student numbers were limited in 2024
In 2024, the Labour government set a cap of 270,000 international students to reduce the migration levels. It also increased student visa fees to A$2,000 (around ₹1.14 lakh) and slowed down visa approvals. This was done to control the rising cost of housing, which becomes a major concern before the May 2024 elections.
Why Australian government policies are changing now
Education plays a key role in Australia as it is Australia’s fourth-largest export and it brings a significant amount of money for the government. International students pay nearly double what local students do and help to support universities financially. The education sector adds over A$50 billion to the economy each year and provides about 250,000 jobs. Last year, Australia’s top eight universities criticized the cap on foreign students, saying they rely heavily on the fees paid by international students. At the University of Sydney, over 40 per cent of university's income comes from international students. China and India are currently the biggest sources of international students in Australia. Australian Education Minister, Jason Clare, said that the education sector is vital to the economy, but its growth must be controlled to make it sustainable in the long term. “International education doesn’t just make us money, it makes us friends. This is about making sure international education grows in a way that supports students, universities and the national interest," Clare said. “The new planning level gives the sector certainty to continue delivering a high-quality educational experience to international students, while addressing national priorities,” he said, according to reports.

A lemon tree thief is the talk of the town in Brisbane. Someone stopped by a woman's front yard at around 4 in the morning, and uprooted an entire tree and drove off with it. The woman who lost the tree is now searching for the culprit, the woman who carried out the strange heist. The CCTV camera installed outside her house captured the entire incident. She posted several videos of the robbery on Instagram detailing what went down outside her house when it was still dark. Ineke McMahon, executive recruiter and career strategist, did not notice the tree was missing in the morning. She was leaving to drop her kid off at school on Friday morning and missed it at the time. After returning from school, Ineke was shocked to see that her lemon tree was missing. She then noticed a trail of dirt leading up the street. The rest was revealed by the CCTV footage. The footage shows a white sedan driving past her home at 4:10 am. The car then turns around and stops near the door of one of Ineke's neighbours. A woman gets down from the vehicle (not visible on the camera), and enters the frame. She pulls on the lemon tree hard, removing it entirely from the ground and dashes away with it in the car. Ineke is heartbroken to have lost the lemon tree. She told Nine News that she had planted it around five months ago. The tree had started to bear fruit. Ineke added she wanted everyone in the neighbourhood to enjoy the fruits of the tree, especially to prepare gin and tonic. However, that dream has now been thwarted by the lemon tree thief.
Lemon tree for gin and tonic
Ineke is trying to hunt down the thief and has posted footage of the incident on social media. The videos don't show the face of the culprit clearly. However, she thinks it is no one from around the neighbourhood and is likely a random person scouting for things to steal. When asked if she plans to replant the lemon tree, Ineke said she doesn't think she would.

Brisbane lemon tree theft has become a viral topic on the internet. The woman had planted it so that everyone in the neighbourhood could enjoy gin and tonic with the lemons. She shared CCTV footage on Instagram with some great music, making it hilarious.

Also Read: Irish scandal: Teen love culminates in old age wedding. Lemon tree caught on camera The videos solved the mystery of what had happened to the lemon tree. Lemon tree for gin and tonic Ineke is trying to hunt down the thief and has posted footage of the incident on social media. The videos don't show the face of the culprit clearly. However, she thinks it is no one from around the neighbourhood and is likely a random person scouting for things to steal. When asked if she plans to replant the lemon tree, Ineke said she doesn't think she would.

Australia’s labour market has shown its first signs of strain in years, with the unemployment rate unexpectedly surging to a 3.5-year high in June, prompting markets to sharply raise expectations of an interest rate cut as early as August. According to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Thursday, the jobless rate rose to 4.3 per cent, the highest level since November 2021, up from 4.1 per cent in May. Employment rose by just 2,000 jobs in June, falling well short of economists’ expectations of a 20,000 gain. The soft print weighed on the Australian dollar, which fell 0.7 per cent to $0.6480, its weakest level in over three weeks. Bond markets also responded strongly, with three-year government bond yields tumbling 10 basis points to 3.386 per cent, while interest rate futures priced in an 85 per cent chance of a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in August, up from 76 per cent earlier, as reported by Reuters.
Rate cut speculation gains momentum
The weak jobs data adds to the case for more policy easing. The RBA has already slashed interest rates twice this year to 3.85 per cent, but held them steady at its last meeting, citing concerns about sticky inflation. “While we’re still not ringing the alarm bells, June’s slackening is another good reason for the RBA to get a wriggle on with rate cuts,” said Harry Murphy Cruise, head of economic research at Oxford Economics Australia, as quoted by Reuters. Cruise also noted that the labour market faces fresh headwinds, particularly from President Donald Trump’s tariffs, which he said were “weighing on business investment and prompting some firms to rethink hiring plans.”
Labour market cracks widen
The underlying details of the report were notably soft. Full-time jobs dropped by 38,200, partially offset by a rise in part-time roles. Hours worked also fell by 0.9 per cent, erasing gains from May. Despite the higher unemployment, the labour force participation rate edged up slightly to 67.1 per cent. While leading indicators such as job vacancies had recently shown signs of stabilising—up 2.9 per cent in the May quarter—private sector job ad data from June showed a rebound to 12-month highs, suggesting the labour market may still hold some resilience. Yet analysts remain concerned about the overall direction. “There are clear signs of deceleration emerging in the labour market. This calls into question the RBA’s decision to prioritise inflation over growth and jobs at its meeting earlier this month,” said Tony Sycamore, market analyst at IG, as quoted by Reuters.
Inflation, jobs, and a tricky RBA path
Despite slowing growth, the RBA remains cautious. It wants to see clear signs that inflation is falling back toward its 2–3 per cent target range. Key data on third-quarter inflation, due later this month, will be pivotal in shaping the central bank’s next move.So far, the rate cuts have not sparked a surge in consumer demand. As per Reuters, economic growth remains sluggish, with household spending subdued. With jobs softening and inflation yet to decisively retreat, the RBA faces a delicate balancing act in its August meeting, amid growing pressure from markets to ease rates further.

Employment grew by just 2,000 jobs, far below the anticipated 20,000. This prompted speculation of an interest rate cut by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). Bond yields fell, while the Australian dollar weakened.

Australia's government said Sunday it expects China to spy on major military drills it is conducting with the United States and other allies. It also renewed a charge – denounced by Beijing as a "false narrative" – that China wants to establish a military base in the South Pacific. "People observe these exercises to collect intelligence around procedures, around the electronic spectrum and the use of communications, and we'll adjust accordingly so that we manage that leakage." The strategically important South Pacific region is at the centre of a diplomatic scramble for influence pitting China against its Western rivals. "We're seeing in my portfolio of the Pacific, China seeking to secure a military base in the region," said Conroy, who has previously made the same assessment. "We're working very hard to be the primary security partner of choice for the region, because we don't think that's a particularly optimal thing for Australia." China inked a secretive security pact with Pacific nation Solomon Islands in 2022. Australia expects Chinese surveillance during mega military drills with US, allies

Australia has expressed urgent concern over US President Donald Trump’s threat to slap a massive 200 per cent tariff on pharmaceutical imports, warning the move could disrupt a vital trade link and drive-up medicine costs for consumers. According to Bloomberg, Australia’s Treasurer Jim Chalmers said on Wednesday that the government was “urgently seeking” clarification from Washington about the details of the proposed tariff plan.“These are obviously very concerning developments,” Chalmers told ABC radio. “Our pharmaceutical industry is much more exposed to the US market,” he added, underlining the alarm in Canberra over how Trump’s escalating trade campaign could hit Australia’s health sector.
Trump escalates tariff threats
Trump has been ramping up his tariff war with major trading partners this month, arguing that steep import duties will rebuild American manufacturing. As per Bloomberg, the US president confirmed plans this week to impose a 50 per cent tariff on copper imports, an announcement that rattled metal markets worldwide. But his warning of a 200 per cent tariff on pharmaceutical imports struck an especially sharp nerve in Australia. Trump has suggested he would give drug makers at least a year to shift their production to the US before enforcing the tariff, but the lack of formal detail is causing anxiety among allies.
Australia’s drug trade in the crosshairs
Australia’s exposure to the threatened pharmaceutical tariffs is far more significant than for copper. While copper sales to the US are tiny, less than 1 per cent of Australia’s total copper exports, medicines are a major export line. According to data cited by Bloomberg, Australia shipped A$2.1 billion (around $1.4 billion) worth of pharmaceutical products to the US in 2024, accounting for a hefty 38 per cent of Australia’s total overseas pharmaceutical exports. Though this represents just 0.4 per cent of Australia’s overall goods exports, the industry is highly dependent on the US as its largest customer for medicines.
Domestic pressures and Washington’s lobbying push
The trade tensions come amid long-running friction over Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), which caps the prices of almost 1,000 commonly used medicines to keep them affordable for Australians. Bloomberg reported that some of Washington’s most influential lobbying groups have been urging the Trump administration to retaliate, accusing Australia of unfair treatment of US pharmaceutical firms. Critics point to the PBS price caps and domestic manufacturing incentives as proof that Australia is “freeloading” on American drug innovation. Australia Treasurer Jim Chalmers seeks urgent clarity on Trump tariff plan targeting pharmaceutical imports, warning it could strain US and Australia trade ties and jeopardise affordable access to medicines under the PBS scheme.

Australia has expressed urgent concern over US President Donald Trump’s threat to slap a massive 200 per cent tariff on pharmaceutical imports, warning the move could disrupt a vital trade link and drive-up medicine costs for consumers. According to Bloomberg, Australia’s Treasurer Jim Chalmers said on Wednesday that the government was “urgently seeking” clarification from Washington about the details of the proposed tariff plan. “These are obviously very concerning developments,” Chalmers told ABC radio. “Our pharmaceutical industry is much more exposed to the US market,” he added, underlining the alarm in Canberra over how Trump’s escalating trade campaign could hit Australia’s health sector. Trump escalates tariff threats Trump has been ramping up his tariff war with major trading partners this month, arguing that steep import duties will rebuild American manufacturing. Australia’s drug trade in the crosshairs Australia’s exposure to the threatened pharmaceutical tariffs is far more significant than for copper. Domestic pressures and Washington’s lobbying push The trade tensions come amid long-running friction over Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), which caps the prices of almost 1,000 commonly used medicines to keep them affordable for Australians. An Australian woman was found guilty of murder and attempted murder of her husband’s relatives, three of whom died after consuming the meal prepared by her. A 12-member jury reached the verdict after a 10-week trial, nearly two years after Erin Patterson served home-cooked beef wellingtons, which contained the toxic mushrooms, to the four guests at her home in Leongatha, Victoria, in July 2023. The 50-year-old mother of two is facing life in prison and will be sentenced later. The shocking event had drawn attention, as the world watched the trial of the mysterious case. During the long trials, which included over 50 witnesses and eight days of Patterson’s testimony, the case witnessed several twists and turns. Meanwhile, the jury was faced with the main question: Did Patterson knowingly lace the dish with the toxic mushrooms with the intention to kill her in-laws?
What happened at lunch?
In July 2023, Patterson hosted her estranged husband’s elderly parents, Gail and Donald Patterson, his aunt, Heather Wilkinson, and his uncle, Ian Wilkinson. She served her guests homemade beef Wellington, a steak dish wrapped in pastry, usually with a paste of finely chopped mushrooms. Her husband, Simon Patterson, was also invited to the gathering, but declined because he felt “uncomfortable”. While she admitted that the mushroom paste contained death cap mushrooms, the most lethal fungus in the world, she maintained that the dish was accidentally poisoned. The following day, all four guests suffered gastrointestinal symptoms and were hospitalised. Later that week, three of them died from altered liver function and multiple organ failure due to Amanita mushroom poisoning. The sole survivor, who spent weeks in intensive care, testified against Erin Patterson at the Victoria state Supreme Court.
Fake medical issue
Patterson had told them that she wanted to discuss her medical issues and whether to tell her kids. In his testimony, Wilkinson said that Patterson told them that she had been diagnosed with cancer. The prosecution accused Patterson of lying, claiming her medical records did not show any such diagnosis. Later, Patterson admitted lying from the stand, saying she was too embarrassed to tell them she was considering a weight loss surgery.
‘Serious toxin syndrome’
Wilkinson and his wife also noted that while Patterson served her guests their own individual portions of the dish, her plate was of a different size and colour than the rest. The couple were admitted to the hospital after having dozens of episodes of vomiting and diarrhoea. Following suspicion, toxicologists determined that their symptoms indicated “serious toxin syndrome caused by ingestion of amanita phalloides mushrooms.”Their condition deteriorated, after which Heather Wilkinson and Gail Patterson died on August 4, and Donald Patterson died the following day. Ian Wilkinson, the sole survivor, was extubated on August 14. He was discharged to rehabilitation on September 11.
Did Patterson get sick too?
While Patterson said that she experienced diarrhoea for several days following the lunch, there was suspicion that she had even got sick, as prosecutors argued she did not experience any symptoms of mushroom poisoning, citing medical records and testimonies of doctors. Patterson’s lawyers claimed that she had simply not eaten enough of the meal to get as sick as others. Moreover, she suggested that she got sick after eating the cake, which was brought by one of her guests.
A series of lies
Patterson acknowledged that she did not tell authorities of the possibility of death cap mushroom ingestion as her relatives lay in the hospital. Instead, she said that she had used a variety of mushrooms in the dish. When asked by the police, she also denied that she had ever foraged for mushrooms, but later admitted she had lied. She also lied about having a food dehydrator, which she had thrown out of panic following the lunch incident. The police found the appliance, and it had traces of the fatal fungi. The police also seized a computer from her house, which revealed she had browsed a website pinpointing death cap mushrooms spotted a short drive from her house a year before the lunch. Prosecutors also accused Patterson of trying to cover her tracks in other ways, like doing a factory reset of her phone during the investigation. Photos of wild mushrooms being weighed on the dehydrator tray were also found in her camera.
Patterson and her husband
Patterson has been married to her husband, Simon, since 2007. However, following multiple splits and reconciliations, the two separated permanently in 2015. In testimony, the couple spoke about having an amicable relationship, which later deteriorated in 2022 over issues related to child support payments of their two children, of whom they share custody. Prosecutors alleged that Patterson killed her guests on purpose due to financial tensions with her husband. She was charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

In Australia, a 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged for allegedly setting fire to a synagogue while worshippers were inside, said the police on Sunday (Jul 6). The suspected arsonist is yet to be identified. As per reports, he set the front door of a busy Melbourne synagogue while around 20 worshippers were inside sharing a Shabbat dinner. The attack is being investigated as an act of terrorism and has drawn strong condemnation from the prime ministers of Australia and Israel.
Australia Synagogue arson: What happened?
In what is being described as the latest disturbing act in a spate of antisemitic violence in Australia, on Friday night, during the Jewish day of rest, the suspect set fire to the door of the synagogue. At the time of the incident, at least 20 people were inside. Thankfully, the worshippers escaped unscathed through the synagogue's rear exit. The fire was quickly extinguished by emergency services, and no injuries were reported.Police in Victoria state have charged the suspect with reckless conduct endangering life and other serious offences. Authorities are now investigating whether the incident meets the legal threshold to be classified as an act of terrorism. While the suspect is yet to be named, he has been identified as a resident of Toongabbie, a suburb of Sydney.

"Detectives will continue to examine the intent and ideology of the person charged to determine if the incident is in fact terrorism," Victoria Police said in a statement.
A series of antisemitic incidents in one night
Alarmingly, Friday's synagogue arson was only one of three antisemitic incidents reported in Melbourne that night. However, police are yet to determine if the incidents are connected. In a separate incident, a group of about 20 protesters stormed an Israeli-owned restaurant, reportedly smashing a window, flipping tables, and shouting slogans at diners, causing chaos during dinner service. The same day, cars were torched and daubed with antisemitic graffiti in another part of the city, according to local media.
A 'reprehensible' violent assault: Netanyahu
The attack triggered swift condemnation from both Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.PM Albanese on Saturday labelled the synagogue attack a "cowardly" act of violence, warning of its potentially deadly consequences. "And the fact that people were having a peaceful dinner, and (were) disrupted by this act of violence, could have had catastrophic consequences," he said.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu went further, calling the arson "reprehensible" and denouncing the restaurant incident as a "violent assault" by "pro-Palestinian rioters.""We demand that the Australian government take all action to deal with the rioters to the fullest extent of the law and prevent similar attacks in the future," he said.
Rising antisemitism in Australia
The attacks have reignited concerns over a recent surge in antisemitic violence in Australia, particularly in Jewish neighbourhoods in Melbourne and Sydney, reports AFP. In December, a separate synagogue in Melbourne was firebombed by masked arsonists, prompting the federal government to launch a task force targeting antisemitism.

Animal rights activists are up in arms in Australia against clothes made of cat fur. An advocacy group said that cat fur was being used in clothes and sold in Victoria despite the Australian government's promise to take action against the practice. New Delhi: India has cautioned Australia against any engagement with the Pakistani military, as it may lead to China getting access to its defence technology. The matter came up during the discussion between Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles on Wednesday in New Delhi. The discussions come against the backdrop of Australia’s own anxieties over China’s expanding military presence, including recent live-fire naval drills in the Tasman Sea in February 2025. Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles is currently visiting India as part of a four-nation trip to boost Canberra’s security cooperation with South and Southeast Asia, including the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. During the talks, both ministers strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam and expressed their deepest condolences to the families of the victims. In a statement, India’s defence ministry said Defence Minister Singh underscored “India’s right to respond in self-defence against cross-border terrorism” and described New Delhi’s actions against Pakistan as “measured, non-escalatory, proportionate, and responsible.” He also said that India would give a robust response to any future terror attacks, dismissing Pakistan’s “nuclear blackmail”. Delhi has sought Canberra’s support both bilaterally and at multilateral fora such as the IMF, World Bank, FATF, UN to expose Pakistan’s support to cross-border terror. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the attack. During the Delhi talks, focus was on Indian participation in Talisman Sabre, a multinational military exercise led by Australia and the United States, which will take place from 13th July to 4th August, on maritime security and maritime domain awareness, industry collaboration, and joint projects in defence, science, and technology. In a breakthrough in defence ties, both countries have signed a submarine detection technology project, or what is known in technical terms as towed array sonar, an underwater detection technology. India has proposed ship maintenance for Australian vessels. With a focus on the Pacific, India will also, for the first time, observe the Australia-Papua New Guinea exercises, Puk Puk. The annual exercises between the Australian Defence Force (ADF), primarily the Army’s 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment, and the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) Engineer Battalion focus on enhancing cooperation, building relationships, and improving infrastructure while developing engineering and trade skills. The United Kingdom and New Zealand also participate in these exercises. The exercises help Papua New Guinea’s infrastructure needs and defence force engineering ties. Another key focus of the talks was on India’s Khalistan concerns. In the past, a number of incidents of vandalisation of Hindu temples have been reported in Australia by Khalistani elements. In 2023, a so-called Khalistani referendum was also conducted by these elements, which witnessed clashes. Australia has condemned incidents of violence involving Khalistani elements. The Australian Deputy Prime Minister Marles also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the day. A readout from the Indian side said both countries reaffirmed that “the shared vision for a stable, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific continues to guide the bilateral collaboration.”

The FATF meeting will be taking place next week, and India plans to present a case for Pakistan’s greylisting. Pakistan has been on the FATF's grey list in the past over worries that investments in the country might go to terror financing. Richard Marles is the first Quad defence minister to visit India since Operation Sindoor, which saw India launch precision strikes on terror camps in Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. The terror attack in India by Pakistan-trained terrorists claimed the lives of 25 Indians and one Nepali national.

"It was heartening to note the significant milestones achieved in our bilateral defence relations since our last meeting. I hoped that in the coming years we would work with renewed momentum, effectively contributing to the growth of bilateral defence relations... Largely due to your commitment and leadership in strengthening India-Australia defence and security cooperation, in the past three years, bilateral defence cooperation has emerged as an important pillar of our comprehensive strategic partnership. I looked forward to a productive discussion today and hoped it would lay a firm ground for further cementing the India and Australia defence ties. This meeting was happening at a time when India was facing extreme challenges at our western border. We had taken steps in response to the barbaric incident in Kashmir. We thanked Australia for its support on this issue. We would be talking more about this later in the meeting," said Rajnath Singh.Marles, in response, expressed solidarity and showed Australia's commitment to working closely with India in fighting terrorism. "The opportunity to work closely with you again over the next three years was really exciting. I had deeply appreciated our relationship over the last three years and the progress that we had made. I wanted to pass on our Prime Minister's condolences to India for all the lives lost in the Pahalgam terrorist attack. Our thoughts and our prayers were with the families of those who were killed in the appalling terrorist attack. We wanted to make clear that Australia stood with India and all countries in combating terrorism. We acknowledged and welcomed the stoppage in military activity. We saw this as an act of Indian leadership. But we would continue to work with India as we combat terrorism in all its forms," said Marles.Notably, Richard Marles' visit builds upon previous agreements, such as the 2022 Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), with ongoing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA).Richard Marles is on a four-nation trip to Maldives, Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia, reflecting Australia's commitment to building stronger regional partnerships in the Indo-Pacific.

An Indian-origin man in Australia suffered a brain injury and is fighting for life after he was allegedly knelt on his neck during an attempted arrest by Australian police in Adelaide. The incident is reminiscent of the murder of George Floyd in the US's Minneapolis in 2020. The Indian-origin man has been identified as Gaurav Kundi. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media. It shows the man being forced onto a road in Adelaide's eastern suburbs as he declares that he has done nothing wrong. His partner identified as, Amritpal Kaur, is seen recording the video while crying and urging the police not to act in that manner. Kaur has alleged that Kundi's head collided with the police vehicle. He reportedly lost consciousness after he was tackled to the ground. The man in the video can be heard saying, "I have done nothing wrong." Kaur could be heard screaming, "Yeah, he hasn't done anything, what the hell. Oh my God! They are doing unfair!". As per a report by Australia Today, the police in Adelaide saw the couple arguing in public and mistook the incident as a case of domestic violence. "I stopped filming because I panicked when the officer knelt on him," Kaur told 9News. "The policeman thought he was assaulting me and doing domestic violence on the road but the policeman is wrong...He was just drunk and that's why he is loud, nothing else." Kundi is currently im Royal Adelaide Hospital, where doctors have said his brain and neck nerves are severely damaged. Australia Today quoted Kaur saying, “Maybe he will wake up if his brain works, or maybe he will not.” Meanwhile, South Australia Police have reportedly launched an internal investigation into the matter and are reviewing body-cam footage. Police Commissioner Grant Stevens backed the officers on duty and said that they acted in line. Stevens has advised that when people die in custody, Commissioner's Inquiries are automatically launched. Given the severity of Kundi's injuries, Stevens has elected to begin the investigation "now, rather than wait".

An Australian actress has tragically lost her son, who took his own life because of bullying. Clare McCann does not want to let him go and is now trying to raise $200,000 to preserve his body in a cryogenic chamber. She faces a tight deadline since she needs the money within seven days if she hopes to have her son's body preserved in hopes of reviving him in the future. McCann told her fans on Instagram Sunday (May 25) that her 13-year-old son Atreyu took his life last Friday after “months of relentless bullying.” The post also carried a fundraising link to collect money to cryopreserve his body. The post read that the mother is "urgently raising $200,000 to cryogenically preserve his body within the next 7 days — or the opportunity for him to live again will be lost forever."The GoFundMe page has only managed to raise $2,260 so far.
Clare McCann will use the money for “immediate cryopreservation” of her son's body
“It’s with shattered hearts that we share the passing of my beautiful son, Atreyu McCann. He was the brightest light in my world — kind, creative, and endlessly loved,” McCann wrote on Instagram. She will use the money for "immediate cryopreservation and legal transportation, required medical and legal services for the procedure”. It will also be used to open “a trust in (Atreyu’s) name to protect his legacy." Any extra funds will go towards anti-bullying education and reform. She says this is what her son wanted, and she is trying to fulfil his wish. “All I really need to say is how much I really need these funds to give my son what he wanted,” McCann told news.com.au.The actress talked about the circumstances that led to the decision to cryopreserve his body. She said that about six or seven years back, the two of them talked about death and the afterlife. McCann told her son about the scientific technology, or cryonic, that lets one save their loved one's body so they could be revived years later when science reaches that point in time. She said that they wanted to do it together, but now that he is gone, "he deserves a second chance to live the life he wanted." “We would talk about maybe we would be revived in a future so far ahead that humans have the ability to swim under water with extended breathing with the dolphins and the whales, or fly, or live on another planet … we would talk and dream about so much.” Australia's first cryogenic facility to preserve the dead opened in Holbrook last year. A man in his 80s became the first to be preserved for future resurrection by Southern Cyronics.
Bullying at Sydney school
Meanwhile, McCann slammed a Sydney school for failing to protect her child despite being repeatedly told about the bullying problem. “He was just 13. He deserved a future. If the school and government had acted when I asked, he might still be alive,” McCann told news.com.au. She also reached out to the Department of Education, and Children’s Services, and told them about the medical information and a confirmed PTSD diagnosis. No one helped her, she says.

Australian actress Clare McCann lost her son, who died by suicide, because of bullying. She is now raising money to freeze and preserve his body.

The post read that the mother is "urgently raising $200,000 to cryogenically preserve his body within the next 7 days — or the opportunity for him to live again will be lost forever." The GoFundMe page has only managed to raise $2,260 so far. Clare McCann will use the money for “immediate cryopreservation” of her son's body “It’s with shattered hearts that we share the passing of my beautiful son, Atreyu McCann. “All I really need to say is how much I really need these funds to give my son what he wanted,” McCann told news.com.au. The actress talked about the circumstances that led to the decision to cryopreserve his body. Bullying at Sydney school Meanwhile, McCann slammed a Sydney school for failing to protect her child despite being repeatedly told about the bullying problem. “He was just 13. He deserved a future. If the school and government had acted when I asked, he might still be alive,” McCann told news.com.au. She also reached out to the Department of Education, and Children’s Services, and told them about the medical information and a confirmed PTSD diagnosis. No one helped her, she says.

One in 28 Australians is of Indian origin, and the Indian community is a huge part of the Australian growth story, said Australian government officials during an all-women panel discussion on the theme ‘Aus-India: Mobilizing Women in Business’. Over the last decade, the Indian community has clearly doubled in Australia. At present, after the United Kingdom, the Indian-born population is the second largest migrant community in Australia.
Highlighting the key areas where there is immense potential for bilateral trade and business opportunities for women, Sarah Storey, First Assistant Secretary, South and Central Asia Division, Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, listed out agriculture, education, green energy, and tourism. She added that these specific sectors were chosen based on discussions with hundreds of individuals, private sector firms, and other stakeholders.

There are about a million Australians who are of Indian origin. From an Indian perspective, a million people might not seem like a lot, but back in Australia we have a population that’s approximately 26 million. And nearly four per cent of this population is of Indian origin, added Silai Zaki, the Australian Consul General in Chennai.
Touching upon the strong people-to-people connect between the Indian and Australian people, Silai Zaki spoke about the spectacular growth in the tourism sector and the vast potential it holds. According to a report from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, “By 2035, the number of Indian tourists to Australia is expected to grow fourfold, from 300,000 in 2017 to nearly 1.2 million. This puts India on track to go from being Australia’s eighth-largest tourism market today to our fourth.” Estimates suggest that, by the year 2035, Indians travelling to Australia could be worth over $9 billion each year to the Australian economy.

According to Australian officials, the 2022 India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) has grown bilateral trade by almost 18 per cent. Considering the benefits of the first trade pact, efforts are underway to firm up a second bilaterial trade pact, they added.
Australian government officials on the panel and the Indian women business leaders representing the Confederation of Indian Industry both agreed that women should be able to venture into every sector that they wish to be in, as they have the capacity and capability to do so. The example of women in combat roles in armed forces was taken as an example to showcase the long-drawn struggles that have resulted in major breakthroughs and progress for women.

A Times of India (TOI) report claims that on several occasions during India’s horrendous tour of Australia, Kohli hinted at doing away with Test cricket, but no one took it seriously. Kohli began the five-match series with a banger, smashing a second-inning hundred in the series opener in Perth and helping India strike the first blow. That, however, was Kohli’s and Team India’s last hurrah moment on the tour, as they lost three of the four remaining matches.

Kohli also suffered the wrath of poor outings on what he called his last Australian Test tour. The right-handed batter remained unbeaten on 100 in the first Test but could manage 90 more across eight innings, amassing just 190 in nine outings.

Kohli to teammates – ‘I am done’

Even before the discussions around squad selection for the away five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20 in Leeds were underway, Kohli expressed his intentions of discontinuing playing Tests to BCCI officials, the discussions of which were going on for around a month.
While his decision surprised all stakeholders of Indian Cricket, including BCCI office bearers and those close to him, Kohli has made up his mind. The report read that the BCCI is eager to have him on the flight to the UK for this crucial Test series, also considering Rohit Sharma’s shock Test retirement lately, but the ball seems to be in Kohli’s court now.
However, what’s surprising here is that Kohli expressed his desire to become the Indian Test captain once again, having previously led and scaled Indian Cricket to imperious heights, with the BCCI selectors putting this idea under the mat. Their reason for deciding against doing so is to pick a captain for the future, with ace batter Shubman Gill leading the race to replace Rohit as Team India’s new Test captain.
"A new WTC cycle is starting. Future and continuity has to be kept in mind as far as the team is concerned. Even coach Gautam Gambhir would want a set of players he is likely to work with for an extended period. There can't be any stop-gap solutions for such an important series. The last two Test series haven't been ideal for the team, and the England series is very crucial," a source close to the information revealed earlier, as also quoted by the TOI.

In 123 Tests, Virat Kohli has scored 9230 runs, averaging 46.85. He scored 30 centuries and 31 fifties, with his best being an unbeaten 254. Sports, Cricket

Kohli to teammates – ‘I am done’ Even before the discussions around squad selection for the away five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20 in Leeds were underway, Kohli expressed his intentions of discontinuing playing Tests to BCCI officials, the discussions of which were going on for around a month.

Who is Anthony Albanese?

Albanese, 61, joined the Labor Party in his twenties and was elected to parliament in 1996. Since then, he’s become one of Australia’s longest-serving MPs, often referred to as a “working-class hero”.

He has been a vocal supporter of universal healthcare, LGBT rights, and the idea of Australia becoming a republic.
He became a senior minister during Labor’s 2007 victory and remained a key player through the party’s turbulent leadership swaps between Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard. As leader of Labor’s left faction, Albanese has since moved closer to the political centre after becoming party leader in 2019.
He has said he is driven by the desire to build a better world for his son, Nathan. He divorced his wife in 2019 and is set to marry his fiancée Jodie Haydon later this year.
Albanese became prime minister in 2022, ending nearly ten years of coalition rule. He took office promising to revive the post-Covid economy, improve international relations, ease the cost of living, and hold a referendum on Indigenous rights.

Under Albanese, ties with China improved after years of friction. His administration ended several trade tariffs and held top-level talks with Beijing for the first time in years. He also mended relations with France after the submarine contract fallout under his predecessor and reassured Pacific nations about Australia’s climate commitments.
While Albanese has avoided major scandals, one incident that drew attention was his purchase of a multimillion-dollar seaside property, criticised as poorly timed by some within his own party.

In 2007, Albanese became a senior minister when Labor swept to power and remained an influential figure.
Australian Election campaign

The 36-day campaign was largely based on issues regarding high living costs and US President Donald Trump's tariffs but there were a few moments of unscripted levity. Albanese tumbled backwards off the stage at a heaving campaign rally, while Dutton drew blood when he hit an unsuspecting cameraman in the head with a stray football.
Economic concerns have dominated the contest for the many Australian households struggling to pay inflated prices for milk, bread, power and petrol. A few important issues of this election are:

A primary concern for voters was the soaring cost of living. Inflation has driven up prices of essentials—eggs rose 11% last year according to AP data, and rent increases are biting hard.

Housing affordability remained a flashpoint, with multiple Australian cities ranking among the world’s least affordable. Both major parties have proposed housing reforms

Energy policy and Australia’s transition from fossil fuels was another point of difference between two parties

Trump and his policies were also a major issue. The next government must navigate an increasingly unstable geopolitical reality. China remains Australia’s top trading partner, but Donald Trump’s threat also looms.
