An Australian beach has recorded a strange phenomenon, one that experts say has a lesser likelihood of happening than being struck by lighting. Meteorologists detected off the coast of Sydney what they are calling a long period between waves. They say that this is highly unusual to happen at this time of the year, Nine News reported.
A wave period almost triple the normal length expected was seen at Freshwater Beach Tuesday morning. The time that passes between consecutive two wave crests hitting a certain point was noted to be 22 seconds long, according to Weatherzone. A normal wave period, according to experts, is between 8 and 12 seconds.
Longer wave periods are also known as groundswells and can generate extremely powerful waves. The Manly laboratory says this is one of the largest wave periods recorded in the country since 1992.

According to data from the Many Hydraulics Laboratory, a wave period of 16 seconds has a 0.8 per cent chance of occurring at the moment. This percentage drops to 0.004 per cent in the case of 20-second wave periods.
In comparison, the chance that a person will be struck by lightning is 1 in 12,000 or 0.0833 per cent.
The reason for the long wave period is the powerful winds reported in Antarctica last week, meteorologists say. However, the strange occurrence is not likely to affect the coastline.

Australia sees 1.1 million lightning strikes in one day

In November last year, Australia witnessed another shocking weather phenomenon. More than 1.1 million lightning strikes in just one day in some parts of the country, including Central Australia, Queensland and South Australia. The lightning strikes happened as heavy rain and storms hit the country.
In Uluru, a whopping 719,068 lightning strikes were reported, while South-east Queensland saw 328,627 lightning strikes. Around 95,000 lightning strikes were noted over northern Australia.

A British man who now lives in Australia has made nearly Rs 38,000 in just two weeks doing basic chores for others. In his first job, he made Rs 6,204 doing a four-hour job. He earned Rs 1,000 more in his next job. He has started a business which offers services such as cleaning, gardening, and grocery shopping.
George Redfern took off from his home in January this year and travelled to Athens, Dubai, and Bangkok before settling in Perth. He soon started applying for jobs in social media, at bars, receptions and other places, but had no luck.
While cleaning his girlfriend's family's garden, Redfern had an idea - Doing chores for other people that they do not want to do. The 21-year-old launched 'CBA jobs' on March 5, and quickly made 700 Australian dollars (Rs 38,000 approx). The work he does includes, cleaning windows, cars, gardening, etc.
George told Daily Mail, "I was cleaning the back garden because I was bored waiting to hear back from jobs. An idea popped into my head that I could do jobs for people who don't have time to do those jobs or don't want to."

Earning thousands in few hours of gardening

He made a Facebook page and offered to do chores for other people by using their equipment. He had five customers within five hours, he said and claims that his company has now taken off.
"At my first job, I earned $115 (Rs 6,204) for four hours of work, and with that money, I started buying gardening equipment and work gear. In my second job I earned $135 (Rs 7,312) using their equipment as well," he said.
He has more jobs lined up, many of them from the same customers. "Garden cleaning is my favourite job because you are in the outdoors all day," he said.

Such jobs are common in India

While something like this looks like a strange job in Australia or any other Western country, in India gardeners, car cleaners and maids who do grocery shopping are common. However, they do not make as much money as Redfern is with this work in Australia.
According to the job site Indeed, the average monthly salary for a gardener in India is Rs 12,809 which can go as high as Rs 22-35 thousand in some places. A person who washes cars can earn up to Rs 23,000 per month, depending on the city.

Birds are mysteriously falling out of trees in New South Wales, Australia, raising fears that they have been poisoned. The birds are either turning up dead or are in a critical state. New South Wales Environment Protection Authority said that they saw the corellas falling out in the Newcastle, Carrington and Hamilton areas on Monday and an investigation has been launched.
More than 60 birds had to be euthanised by a vet because of being in extreme distress. The birds were found bleeding and disoriented. The birds were spotted in several parts of the area - in parks, shopping centres, on ovals and in front yards. Several of the birds suffered from paralysis and were unable to fly.

Suspecting foul play, Jason Gordon, the Environment Protection Authority’s executive director of regulatory operations, said it is completely unjustified to deliberately poison the birds. “The misuse of pesticides, whether deliberate or unintentional, is completely unacceptable and carries heavy penalties,” he said.
Hunter Wildlife Rescue also believed that the birds were poisoned. The distressing situation is unfolding in several places in the region.

India skipper Rohit Sharma is proud of the team that had gone unbeaten in the last two ICC tournaments, dropping only a single final game in the last three tournaments. Out of 24 games played in ODI World Cup 2023, T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025, India lost only the final of 2023 ODI World Cup against Australia at home and won the remaining 23 matches.
"That's a great, great milestone to have, honestly speaking," Rohit said at the press conference after the CT 2025 win. "It speaks to the kind of team this is. I know we reached the ODI World Cup and lost that final. But then we went to the T20 World Cup and didn't lose a single game. We went on to win the trophy here as well.

"That shows the quality in the team. A lot of depth. A lot of understanding within the group. A lot of excitement. And that is how we want to play our cricket. That's what we had spoken before the tournament - that there's too much pressure on the outside. If one game, India loses, or the match goes here and there, there's so much speculation that happens.

West Indies played 17 games from 1975 to 1983 in three ICC events, winning 15 games and losing only two to go with their two ODI World Cup titles.
For Australia, they played 44 games in seven ICC events from 1999-2007 and won 37 games, lost six while one was no result. Australia won four ICC titles in the period (three ODI World Cups and one Champions Trophy 2006).

Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has urged leaders to “not give in to bullies” following a scathing social media post from US President Donald Trump.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform just before midnight on Sunday, and criticised Turnbull’s leadership and his understanding of China.
“Malcolm Turnbull, the former Prime Minister of Australia who was always leading that wonderful country from ‘behind’ never understood what was going on in China, nor did he have the capacity to do so. I always thought he was a weak and ineffective leader and, obviously, Australian’s agreed with me!!!,” Trump wrote.

The comments appeared to be a response to an interview Turnbull gave to Bloomberg, in which he suggested that Trump’s erratic leadership style was playing into China’s hands.
“President Xi will aim to be the exact opposite of Trump: where Trump is chaotic, he will be consistent. Where Trump is rude and abusive, he’ll be respectful. Where Trump is erratic, he will be consistent,” Turnbull said.
He warned that the world was now witnessing an “undiluted” version of Trump, arguing that his unpredictable nature made Chinese President Xi Jinping a more appealing partner for many nations.

Defence Minister Richard Marles said China gave a warning that the vessels intended to engage in live firing as they sailed about half way between Australia and New Zealand in the Tasman Sea.
"By that I mean a broadcast that was picked up by airlines or literally planes that were commercial planes that were flying across the Tasman," he told national broadcaster ABC.
The Chinese naval ships were in international waters and acting within international law, Marles said, but Australian warships would typically give 12-24 hours' notice of such drills to give airlines time to react.
"That notice was not provided here," the defence minister said.

"This was very disconcerting for the planes that were flying, but they were able to divert," he said, stressing that the aircraft had not been placed in danger.
Australia had made representations to China both in Canberra and in Beijing asking why the purported live fire drills were held there and why more notice was not given to avoid disruption, Marles said.
The government was still awaiting confirmation that live firing actually took place, he said.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed there had been "no imminent risk of danger" to Australian or New Zealand assets.

Asked about the drills on Friday, China's foreign ministry said the country's military had "organised a naval formation to conduct training and exercises in distant waters".

"The exercises were conducted in a safe, standard, and professional manner at all times, in accordance with relevant international laws and practices," ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a regular press briefing.
Australia's air safety agency warned commercial flights to alter their course after receiving "reports of live firing in international waters".
"As a precaution, we have advised airlines with flights planned in the area," government agency Airservices Australia said in a statement.
"We are also working together to coordinate advice to operators and pilots."
Qantas and its subsidiary budget airline Jetstar temporarily adjusted some flights between Australia and New Zealand, industry sources said.
Virgin Australia was also heeding the advice, while Air New Zealand said it had "modified flight paths as needed to avoid the area".
The ships were reportedly within 150 nautical miles (around 280 kilometres) of Australia's mainland earlier this week.
Last week, Canberra rebuked Beijing for "unsafe" military conduct, accusing a Chinese fighter jet of dropping flares near an Australian air force plane patrolling the South China Sea.
Beijing swiftly hit back, accusing the Australian plane of "violating Chinese sovereignty and endangering Chinese national security".
It was the latest in a string of tense encounters between China and Australia in the increasingly contested airspace and shipping lanes of the Asia-Pacific region.
A Chinese fighter jet was accused of intercepting an Australian Seahawk helicopter in international airspace in 2024, dropping flares across its flight path.
In 2023, a Chinese destroyer was accused of bombarding submerged Australian navy divers with sonar pulses in waters off Japan, causing minor injuries.
The United States and allies including Australia frequently cross through the 180-kilometre (112-mile) Taiwan Strait to reinforce its status as an international waterway, angering China, which claims jurisdiction over the waters.

In a statement, Canberra said that one of the Chinese J-16 fighter jets engaged in an “unsafe and unprofessional interaction” with one of its P-8A surveillance jets, posing a risk to its personnel. The ministry said that no one was injured in the incident and there was no damage to Australia's aircraft.
“Australia expects all countries, including China, to operate their militaries in a safe and professional manner,” the statement added.

However, China alleged that the Australian aircraft “intentionally intruded” into its airspace, and Chinese jets responded in a “legitimate, lawful, professional, and restrained” manner.
Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles told Sky News on Thursday (Feb 13) that the flares fired by the Chinese plane passed the Australian jet at a less than 30 metres distance.
“The J-16 was so close that there's no way you could have been able to ensure that the flares did not hit the P-8,” he said.
“Had any of those flares hit the P-8, that would have definitely had the potential for significant damage to that aircraft,” he added.
