New South Wales (NSW) Transport Minister Jo Haylen has apologised for misusing her ministerial driver to attend a private lunch with friends over the Australia Day weekend, costing taxpayers $750.
“I made the wrong decision,” Haylen acknowledged she made a mistake and confirmed she would repay the money for the 13-hour, 446km trip to the Hunter Valley.
Asked why she didn’t just book an Uber, the minister told reporters: “In retrospect, I should have.”

Housing and Mental Health Minister Rose Jackson also attended the trip

According to the logbook, the trip started on Jan 25 at 8 am and ended at 8.50 pm and was coded as a “business trip during working day”.
For the trip, which was also attended by Housing and Mental Health Minister Rose Jackson, the driver took a 13-hour trip from Sydney to the minister’s holiday house, before driving them to a separate jaunt at the Brokenwood winery for a three-hour lunch.
While Jackson was on the trip, she was not involved in organising the ministerial driver. Haylen said she alone took full responsibility.
After picking up the ministers at the holiday house in Caves Beach, south of Newcastle, the driver then took them to the Brokenwood Estate, where the set menu is $105 per person before wines are paired.

Opposition demands resignation

According to the NSW rules, government ministers and the opposition leader are granted the use of a ministerial vehicle and driver. The vehicles can be used for both public and private purposes, and government sources were insisting on Sunday that no policies had been breached by the trip.
While the government insists no rules were broken on the trip, opposition leader Mark Speakman demanded their resignation for what he called a clear misuse of public money. “This shows a contempt for the taxpayer,” he said.
While Haylen said she would not resign over the issue, Minns described her use of the ministerial vehicle as “clearly unacceptable” and said he had ordered the NSW Cabinet Office to review the guidelines for drivers “so this can’t happen again”. “It’s not on for drivers to be used in this way,” he said.
However, in a statement, a spokesperson from the Department of Premier and Cabinet said the driver’s shift had not exceeded 12 hours because of the inclusion of “mandatory breaks”.

A 34-year-old Australian woman has been arrested for allegedly poisoning her one-year-old daughter to gain financial donations and boost social media followers.
According to the authorities, the Queensland woman used unauthorised medications to induce medical distress in her child, subsequently photographing and filming the baby’s pain to solicit funds online.

Child suffered serious medical episodes

The doctors raised concerns in October when the baby was admitted to the hospital following a serious medical episode. After investigation, the woman was charged with torture, administering poison, making child exploitation material and fraud.

A boost for the world champions is the return of their captain Cummins to the ODI side after previous reports suggested that he could miss the Champions Trophy 2025 due to an injury. Cummins will, however, miss the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, starting January 29, for the birth of his second child. Veteran batter Steve Smith will lead in his absence.
Meanwhile, most World Cup-winning players have retained their places, with Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh picked as openers. Marnus Labuschagne, Smith and Glenn Maxwell will play in the middle order, while Marcus Stoinis and two relatively newer faces in the ODIs – Hardie and Short – will take care of the lower-order duties.
Australia has named two glovemen - Alex Carey and first-choice Josh Inglis.
Cummins, Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc are part of the bowling department, with the right-arm seamer Nathan Ellis picked as a backup. Australia, however, has just named one specialist spinner in Adam Zampa.
"This is a balanced and experienced squad with the core having been involved in the previous one-day World Cup, the West Indies series, last year's successful tour of the UK and the more recent Pakistan home series," chief selector George Bailey said, as quoted by cricket.com.au.
"It offers a variety of options for touring management depending on the opposition and the conditions that may present in Pakistan,” he added.

Moscow, Russia
The Australian government has reportedly initiated a probe after Russian journalists shared a video on Telegram showing the Kremlin forces allegedly manhandling a man from Australia. There are claims that the Russian forces captured the man, who identified himself as Oscar Jenkins, from the battlefield and he was fighting for Ukraine. The video shows the man with his hands tied with tape and being questioned roughly. While answering the questions, the man says he is 32 years old and previously lived in Australia.
“I’m Australian,” Jenkins says in broken English. “Oscar Jenkins. 32 years old … I study biology.” He can be seen wearing a military uniform and has dirt on his face. The video further shows a man standing behind ‘Jenkins’ hitting him in the head twice with a stick.

Sydney, Australia
Australia on Monday (Dec 23) took the decision to extradite Daniel Edmund Duggan to the US. Duggan, an ex-US Marine pilot, had allegedly illegally trained China's military pilots.
He was arrested in Australia in October 2022 at the request of the US government, which has accused him of breaking American arms control laws.

What are the charges against him?

The US alleged that the ex-marine illegally trained Chinese military pilots at a test flight academy "based in South Africa, with a presence in the People's Republic of China" between 2010 and 2012. This, the country claims, happened after he left the Marines in 2002.

Government justification

Australian Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said that Duggan "should be extradited to the United States to face prosecution for the offences of which he is accused".
"Duggan was given the opportunity to provide representations as to why he should not be surrendered to the United States. In arriving at my decision, I took into consideration all material in front of me," he added.

Family reacts

Duggan's family received formal notice of the decision on Friday in a terse letter that confirmed Duggan would be handed over to US authorities between December 30 and February 17.
His wife, in a statement, said that the decision so close to Christmas was devastating.
"We are shocked and absolutely heartbroken by this callous and inhumane decision which has been delivered just before Christmas with no explanation or justification from the government," Duggan's wife, Saffrine, said in a statement.
They also said that Duggan's legal team is reviewing potential legal options for appeal, "including requesting specific reasons for the government’s decision".
"We feel abandoned by the Australian government and deeply disappointed that they have completely failed in their duty to protect an Australian family," she added.
Duggan is expected to be extradited between December 30 and February 17, barring further legal interventions. For now, his family remains committed to fighting the decision, as the broader implications of the case continue to unfold on an international stage.

Netanyahu calls Albanese govt 'anti-semitic' over Australia synagogue attack

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday (Dec 6) condemned the targeting of Adass Israel synagogue in Ripponlea, located in Melbourne's southeast, calling it a "deliberate, unlawful attack". The attack in question took place on Friday morning where two masked individuals were seen pouring accelerants inside the synagogue.

An ‘attack on Australian values’

The Australian PM, while speaking at a forum in Western Australia without mincing his words condemned the attack. Attacking a place of worship is an "attack on Australian values," said Albanese.

“To attack a synagogue is an act of antisemitism, an attack on the right that all Australians should have to practice their faith in peace and security,” he added.

Meanwhile, Premier of the Australian state of Victoria, Jacinta Allan during her visit to the site on Friday afternoon called the attack on the Jewish house of worship 'an act of antisemitism.'

Allan, who was joined by Jewish leaders, also pledged $100,000 for rebuilding work at the synagogue, which police said has sustained significant damage.

"This is a place of worship set up by survivors of the Holocaust, who fled what was the most evil regime in Europe and chose Melbourne for their home," she told reporters.

Investigation underway

Around 60 firefighters and 17 trucks were called to the site at about 4:10 am (local time) after a large blaze engulfed the Adass Israel synagogue in Ripponlea.

Australia's counter-terrorism police and the arson squad are investigating the firebombing of the synagogue.

The Victoria police are looking for two masked individuals who were just seen spreading an accelerant at the synagogue just before the fire broke out. The police said that they were treating the fire as deliberately lit.

The law enforcement personnel believe the attack was targeted and have renewed an appeal for information. Detective Inspector Chris Murray said police were not ruling out terrorism as a motive as they searched for the suspected arsonists.

“We are throwing everything at this,” he told reporters outside the synagogue on Friday.

Murray reassured the public, stating that police were treating that incident as "absolutely serious," adding that patrols would be increased in the area. He further mentioned that cameras in the vicinity were expected to be able to capture most of the event, but the footage had yet not been accessed.

Police request people with any available CCTV footage in that area from 3:00 am (local time) onwards on Friday to contact Crime Stoppers.

Australian police have scored the biggest cocaine bust in the country's history after seizing 2.3 tonnes of cocaine from a fishing boat that had broken down off the coast of Queensland. The authorities have arrested 13 people, including two juveniles who were allegedly part of a drug-smuggling syndicate.

The drugs have been valued at an estimated A$760 million ($490mn), which could have been distributed across 11.7 million street deals.

According to CNN, the boat experienced a suspected mechanical breakdown, leaving the accused stranded 18 kilometres (11 miles) off the northeastern tip of K’gari island on November 30. The boat was on its way to deliver the drugs to a larger mothership.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) had been tracking the recreational fishing boat and boarded it after it broke down.

While two men were arrested onboard the boat, the other 11 were arrested on shore, waiting for the shipment and in nearby areas.

AFP has said one of the men is identified as the Brisbane vice president of the Comanchero Outlaw Motorcycle Gang, who is accused of violence, trafficking, and extortion.

The recent cocaine bust was part of an extensive investigation into the notorious gang, which started last month.

South Africa has pushed Australia down to third position on the World Test Championship (WTC) table in the current 2023-25 cycle. SA now sit on the second spot after beating Sri Lanka in the first Test by 233 runs on Saturday (Nov 30).

South Africa now have 59.26 per cent points with one Test left in the ongoing series against Sri Lanka and two more against Pakistan at home in December next month. SA, if they manage to win all their matches, have a pretty solid chance of making it to their maiden ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final scheduled in June next year.

South Africa's win, coupled with Australia's loss in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test against India, have made it harder for the Baggy Green to play their second consecutive WTC final.

Australia, however, still has a chance to make it up in their remaining four BGT Tests at home and two away Tests against Sri Lanka.

The loss, meanwhile, dealt a cruel blow to Sri Lanka's chances of making it to the WTC final. New Zealand's loss against England in the ongoing first Test between the two sides, however, will get them back to fourth place from the current fifth place.

New Zealand, on the other hand, also received a setback for their chances after failing to perform at their own home against England despite coming off a 3-0 win against India in an away Test series.

India, meanwhile, stays on top, thanks to their emphatic 295-run win over Australia in Perth and four more Tests to go.

India's next match starts December 6 in Adelaide while South Africa and Sri Lanka will play the second Test from December 5.

In the first Test, Marco Jansen took 11 wickets in the match for SA and helped SL bowl out for a paltry 42 in the first innings from which the visitors could never really recover.

The 47-year-old confessed to around 307 offences he committed at childcare centres in the Australian state of Queensland and Italy.

He committed the offences between 2003 to 2022, and his victims were kids from the age of one to seven.

While sentencing him, the judge called the offences committed by him "depraved" and "horrendous".

Judge Paul Smith further added that "there was a significant breach of trust."

Griffith was further separately accused of sexually abusing an unknown number of children in the state of New South Wales.

The court also added that since Griffith had a "paedophilic disorder," there was a high chance of him repeating the offences. Hence, the judge ordered a non-parole period of at least 27 years for Griffith.

In all those videos and photographs, the faces of the victims were cropped, but the investigators still traced them to Griffith because of the same bedsheet visible. It was found that the bedsheet was sold to childcare centres across Queensland.

Griffith was charged with 28 counts of rape, almost 200 charges relating to indecent treatment of a child, and several related to making and sharing child exploitation material.

The court also added that since Griffith had a "paedophilic disorder," there was a high chance of him repeating the offences. Hence, the judge ordered a non-parole period of at least 27 years for Griffith. Adding to his heinous act, Griffith ruploaded videos and photographs of him sexually assaulting children onto the dark web, investigation revealed. The Australian Senate passed a law banning children under 16 from using social media on Thursday (Nov. 28). It becomes the first country in the world to have such legislation.

The ban will not take effect for at least 12 months and could see tech companies get fined up to A$50 million if they do not abide by it.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the legislation is needed to protect young people from the "harms" of social media, an issue that has been raised by many parent groups.

Meanwhile, critics have been questioning how the ban would work and its impact on privacy and social connection.

"This is a global problem, and we want young Australians essentially to have a childhood," Albanese said while introducing the bill to the lower house last week. "We want parents to have peace of mind," he added.

As it passed the Senate by 34 votes to 19 late on Thursday, the bill will now return to the House of Representatives, where the government has a majority, which means it will surely pass.

However, the legislation did not specify yet which platforms will be banned. These decisions will later be made by Australia’s communications minister, who will seek advice from the eSafety Commissioner - an internet regulator that will enforce the rules.

Australia passes social media ban on children under 16, becomes first country to take such measure

The House of Representatives in Australia on Wednesday (Nov 27) cleared the bill which bans children, below the age of 16, from accessing social media platforms.

The first-of-its-kind legislation has now been left to the Senate to be made into a law.

The bill, which makes social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of nearly 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) if a systemic failure is found on their side in preventing young children from creating accounts on these platforms, was supported by major parties.

The legislation was passed by 102 to 13 votes. If the bill turns into a law, one year would be given to the platforms to make a plan on how they will implement the age restrictions before any kind of penalties are enforced on them.

Speaking in the Parliament, Opposition lawmaker Dan Tehan said that the government had decided to include the amendments in the Senate which will bolster privacy protections.

The platforms will not be permitted to compel users to provide government-issued identity documents which include driver’s licenses or passports.

The platforms will also not be able to ask for digital identification through a government system.

“Will it be perfect? No. But is any law perfect? No, it’s not. But if it helps, even if it helps in just the smallest of ways, it will make a huge difference to people’s lives,” Tehan said while speaking in the Parliament.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said that the bill will be debated in the Senate later on Wednesday (Nov 27).

Here's what critiques say about the bill

As per the critiques, the lawmakers have rushed the decision through Parliament without adequate scrutiny. They said that the bill can create privacy risks for users of all ages and will take away the authority of the parents to decide what is best for their children.

It has also been argued by critics that the ban would isolate children and they would be deprived of social media's positive aspects and will push them to the dark web.

They added that the children will become reluctant to report the harms of social media. Meanwhile, independent lawmaker Zoe Daniel said the legislation would “make zero difference to the harms that are inherent to social media.”

“The true object of this legislation is not to make social media safe by design, but to make parents and voters feel like the government is doing something about it,” Daniel said while speaking at the Parliament.

"LinkedIn simply does not have content interesting and appealing to minors," said the Microsoft-owned company, in its submission to the Australian Senate committee.

Australia marks 10 years since tragic death of cricketer Phillip Hughes

At a single-day Senate committee, an advocate representing major social media platforms said that the Australian government should delay the laws which will ban children under the age of 16 from accessing the sites by at least one year, reported AP news agency.

The advocate representing social media platforms like X, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok was the managing director of Digital Industry Group Inc. Sunita Bose.

Bose was speaking at the hearing into the first legislation of the world, which was introduced last week by the Australian parliament.

She added that the parliament needs to first wait for the age assurance technologies' government-commissioned evaluation, which will be completed in June.

“Parliament is asked to pass a bill this week without knowing how it will work,” Bose was quoted as saying by the agency.

As per the legislation, a fine of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) will be imposed on platforms for their systemic failure in preventing children from making their accounts on them.

Ban on social media will isolate children: Social media platforms

During the hearing, Australia's Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said that she was looking forward to reading the assessment of the Senate committee regarding the proposed law.

Speaking in the Parliament, Rowland said that the proposed law "supports parents to say 'no'" to children who wish to use social media. "Social media in its current form is not a safe product for them," she added

"Access to social media does not have to be the defining feature of growing up. There is more to life than constant notifications, endless scrolling, and pressure to conform to the false and unrealistic perfectionism that can be served up by influencers," the minister said.

Meanwhile, Opposition Sen. Ross Cadell asked Bose how his 10-year-old stepson has accounts on social media platforms where the nominal age limit is 13.

To this, Bose replied that "this is an area where the industry needs to improve."

Bose said that the ban carries the risk of pushing children into isolation and driving them to “darker, less safe online spaces,” which “could compromise the safety of young people.”

"That's an outrageous statement. You're trying to protect the big tech giants," said Henderson.

Bose argued that the algorithms of social media platforms help protect young children from wrongful content, including nudity.

"We need to see continued investment in algorithms and ensure that they do a better job at addressing harmful content," said Bose.
