Premier League: Manchester United loses 3-1 at Arsenal, further damages top-4 hopes

Manchester City regained their one-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion while Arsenal upset London rivals Chelsea with a 4-2 victory at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Liverpool had taken over at the top of the table after their 4-0 demolition of Manchester United on Tuesday, meaning City could ill afford a slip-up at home to Graham Potter's side.

Pep Guardiola's team struggled to break down a well-organised Brighton defence in the opening 45 minutes but broke the deadlock through Algerian forward Riyad Mahrez in the 53rd minute.

Kevin De Bruyne burst forward from inside his own half, brushing off three challengers, before finding Mahrez who converted at the second attempt.

That opener settled City's nerves with the hosts scoring a second 12 minutes later as Phil Foden's effort from distance was helped past Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez by a deflection.

Bernardo Silva added a late third to round off the win that moved Pep Guardiola's side onto 77 points from 32 games.

Arsenal's victory, with two goals from Eddie Nketiah was a major boost in their bid to qualify for the Champions League via a top-four finish.

The win moves the Gunners level on 57 points with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with both teams having played 32 matches and set to meet at Spurs on May 12.

Arsenal went ahead twice in a pulsating first half at Stamford Bridge, first when Nketiah pounced on a weak back pass by Andreas Christensen in the 13th minute and then when Emile Smith-Rowe finished off a flowing counter-attack in the 27th.

PEGGED BACK

But the visitors were quickly pegged back on both occasions by equalisers from Timo Werner and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Nketiah restored the visitors' lead in the 57th minute when he seized on another mix-up in Chelsea's defence to make it 3-2, stabbing the ball home after Thiago Silva's interception bounced into the Arsenal striker's path off Malang Sarr.

Chelsea searched for a third leveller but it was Arsenal's Bukayo Saka who rounded off the win when he converted a penalty in the 92nd minute after he was adjudged to have been fouled by Azpilicueta.

Chelsea stayed in third place on 62 points having played a game less than both Spurs and Arsenal.

At the bottom end of the table, Everton needed a stoppage-time equaliser from Richarlison to scrape a point at home to Leicester City and move four points clear of the relegation zone.

Harvey Barnes put the visitors in front in the fifth minute, poking home a pass from James Maddison from close range as Everton struggled to find their feet, and the home side did not register a shot on target in the first half.

Richarlison finally forced a save from Kasper Schmeichel in the 67th minute but he wasted several good chances before redeeming himself with a scuffed shot in the second minute of stoppage time at the end of the game to grab a point.

Everton are four points clear of 18th-placed Burnley with both teams having seven games to go. Managerless Burnley host Southampton at Turf Moor on Thursday.

Relegation worries are now a distant memory for Newcastle United who picked up their sixth straight home win with Miguel Almiron's first goal for the club in over a year earning them a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace to move Eddie Howe's side up to 11th.

Brighton & Hove Albion ended a seven-match winless run in the Premier League with a shock 2-1 victory at top-four chasing Arsenal on Saturday after Zambian midfielder Enock Mwepu scored one goal and created another.

The result left Arsenal fifth in the table on 54 points, behind Tottenham Hotspur -- who play Aston Villa later -- on goal difference but having now played the same number of games. Brighton moved up to 11th with 37 points.

"It has been a tough week, especially today because we wanted a reaction (to the defeat at Crystal Palace)," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told the BBC.

"It came in the second half, which is too late; we have to have the courage and personality to play much better and raise the level in the first half.

"We made it really difficult for ourselves. We were sloppy, we had no purpose to attack, we were really imprecise and didn't want to play forward."

Arteta rejigged the Arsenal starting line-up due to injuries and midfielder Granit Xhaka started at left back, a decision that gave Arsenal no control in midfield and no cohesion in attack in the first half.

Brighton opened the scoring when a long ball found Mwepu on Xhaka's flank and with the Swiss international further upfield, Mwepu found space for a cutback to Leandro Trossard whose curling effort sailed past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Arsenal thought they had grabbed an equaliser just before the break when Gabriel Martinelli headed home amid a crowd near the goal line, but it was chalked off after VAR spent four minutes looking at replays to rule the Brazilian offside.

A change in formation gave Arsenal hope in the second half but it was quickly snuffed out when Mwepu drilled a half-volley from the edge of the box into the back of the net.

Martin Odegaard halved the deficit in the 89th minute with a hopeful long-range shot that took a wicked deflection and looped over goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to give Arsenal a lifeline, but Brighton held on.

"I'm glad we won today, we needed the three points. Coming from six defeats is not easy," Mwepu said.

"We really believe in ourselves, we have the right mentality in the group and we showed what we could do today. The gameplan was to win."

Premier League: Enock Mwepu, Leandro Trossard star as Brighton stun Arsenal 2-1

Arsenal's hopes of securing a top-four Premier League finish this season were dealt a blow as the below-par visitors suffered a 3-0 defeat against rampant Crystal Palace on Monday.

Arsenal were put to the sword in the first half by the clinical hosts, with goals from forwards Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jordan Ayew giving Palace a deserved 2-0 interval lead.

The Londoners improved after the break, with Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard missing big chances to get their team back in the match. Their wastefulness proved costly as Wilfried Zaha put the game to bed with a penalty 16 minutes from time.

Tottenham Hotspur's 5-0 home victory over Newcastle United on Sunday means they are fourth, ahead of their of their north London rivals on goal difference having played a game more.

Arsenal had been in fine form on the road in the Premier League prior to their trip to south London on Monday.

"Congratulations to Palace for the game they played but we made it impossible for ourselves with the way we competed," Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta told Sky Sports.

"I apologise to our supporters. We didn't have the presence today or the composure to dominate the situation so that is what I`m most annoyed with.

"First of all we need to put our hands up and get the criticism we deserve. Then we accept it, look ourselves in the mirror and look to the next game.

This was not good enough."

NO RHYTHM

Arsenal's 1-0 win at Aston Villa last time out was their fifth away league victory in a row - the first time they had been on such a run since May 2015.

But they struggled from the start to find any rhythm, with Palace very much the better side in the opening period.

It took the home side 16 minutes to break the deadlock, as Joachim Andersen's head sent a free-kick across the box for Mateta to steer in his fourth league goal of the season.

Eight minutes later and centre-back Anderson again turned provider, picking out a perfect pass for Ayew, who controlled well before finding the net for the first time since December.

Arsenal just could not create any openings of note in the first half, with Mateta going close to adding a third for Palace before the interval.

Content with a two-goal lead, the hosts sat back and invited pressure after the break. Smith Rowe should have done better from close range before Odegaard dragged his effort wide.

Zaha then broke on the counter and was awarded a penalty - only Raheem Sterling (23) and Jamie Vardy (21) have been given more penalties in Premier League history than the Ivory Coast forward - which he converted emphatically.

Arsenal substitute Eddie Nketiah did hit the crossbar but it would have been too little, too late.

A second defeat in their last three league games opens the door for Arsenal's top-four rivals and Arteta's side still have it all to do to secure a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2016-17.

Fifth-placed Arsenal are level on 54 points with Spurs and three points ahead of West Ham United and Manchester United, albeit with all their top-four rivals having played more games.

The scoreline at Selhurst Park did not flatter an impressive Palace, who continue to improve under former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira, with the victory moving them up to ninth.

"I'm really proud," Vieira told Sky Sports. "We defended well and took our chances. We scored in important moments of the game. We needed a big team performance and we did it so we're really pleased.

"It is a good moment for the club but we know we need to be consistent in our performances and results."

Mikel Arteta has played down Arsenal's improved recent form and heaped praise on Liverpool, saying his side will need to be at their best to compete with a team that dominates every aspect of the game when they meet at The Emirates on Wednesday.

Arsenal have won their last five league games and returned to the top four after Sunday's 2-0 home win over Leicester City moved them a point ahead of Manchester United with three games in hand.

Juergen Klopp's Livepool, who have not lost a league game this year, will be looking to close the gap on leaders Manchester City to a point with a win at Arsenal.

Arteta told reporters on Tuesday: "We are facing arguably the best team in England and have to be at our best to beat them. You face a team that dominates every single aspect of the game, so when that happens you have to be at your very best."

Arteta said Arsenal still have to improve a lot before they can challenge the Premier League`s biggest teams but they are playing the best football since he took charge in December 2019.

Liverpool arguably the best team in England, says Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta

Chelsea put aside their off-field turmoil to keep a grip on third place in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Newcastle United while Arsenal leapfrogged Manchester United into fourth with a 2-0 victory over Leicester City on Sunday.

Everton's plummet towards the relegation zone continued as they lost 1-0 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers but Leeds United gained some respite with a last-gasp 2-1 win over bottom club Norwich City.

Leaders Manchester City, who are three points ahead of Liverpool, are at Crystal Palace on Monday.

Liverpool won 2-0 at Brighton on Sunday.

The 19-year reign of Chelsea's owner and backer Roman Abramovich effectively came to an end this week after the UK government imposed sanctions on the Russian, with the club operating under a special licence.

With the club up for sale and dealing with a series of restrictions on their current operations, it was perhaps not surprising that Chelsea were far from their best against Eddie Howe's improving Newcastle.

But with the match seemingly heading for a draw, Jorginho launched a long pass over the Newcastle defence to Kai Havertz and the German's brilliant control allowed him to fire past Martin Dubravka for his fourth goal in three league games.

Chelsea's German manager Thomas Tuchel said the team had a responsibility to those at the club facing a much more difficult situation than the playing and coaching staff.

"There are a lot of people that I see on a daily basis who are worried and who work for decades. They are not so famous but they are worried for a pretty close future, wonder if things will be alright," he said.

"So for them, it's important to have the attitude right and also to focus on that and see the responsibility and what this means to these people. Even if it's just for 90 minutes," he added.

Goals from Thomas Partey and Alexandre Lacazette earned Arsenal a comfortable 2-0 win over Leicester at the Emirates.

Champions League slot.

Arsenal have now won their last five games and a run of nine wins from their last eleven encounters in the Premier League has transformed their season after a poor start to the campaign.

Partey opened the scoring with an 11th-minute header and Lacazette made sure of the win, after the break, from the penalty spot.

Arsenal have a great chance to return to Champions League football for the first time since the 2016/17 season but Arteta said work remained to be done.

"We have to be there, we should be there. Our history obliges to be there but we are not there yet and there are still a lot of games to play," he said.

EVERTON LOSE AGAIN

Everton suffered their fourth straight defeat thanks to a 49th-minute header from Wolves defender Conor Coady leaving Frank Lampard's team only above the relegation zone on goal difference.

The Toffees are in 17th place on 22 points, the same as 18th placed Watford and just one more than 19th placed Burnley.

Leeds United have similar concerns to the Merseysiders but their survival hopes were boosted by a 2-1 win at Norwich which moved them four points above Everton.

Joe Gelhardt came off the bench to score a stoppage-time winner and give American coach Jesse Marsch his first win since replacing Marcelo Bielsa.

Rodrigo had put Leeds ahead in the 14th minute but their hopes of three points looked to have been dashed by Kenny McLean's stoppage-time leveller.

But then 19-year-old Gelhardt, who had been on the field for less than two minutes, tapped in from close range to the relief of the Elland Road crowd.

Roy Hodgson's Watford showed they are determined to fight for survival with a 2-1 win at Southampton earned by two goals from Cucho Hernandez.

Ukrainian Andriy Yarmolenko was on target for West Ham in their 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

Premier League: Chelsea strike late to beat Newcastle 1-0 amid off-field turmoil, Arsenal outclass Leicester

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his first three goals for Barcelona in a 4-1 win at Valencia - the third a deflection attributed to him only after the match, lifting his side to fourth place in LaLiga on Sunday.

The former Arsenal striker, who last found the net in October in the Gunners' 3-1 win over Aston Villa, now has 10 goals overall this season.

Frenkie de Jong scored the second goal for Barcelona, who looked much improved after struggling at the start of the campaign in the wake of the departure of talisman Lionel Messi.

Initially the fourth goal was attributed to Pedri, but when the referee issued his match report after the game, he switched it to Aubameyang as Pedri's strike was deflected off the striker's back on its way in.

Carlos Soler scored a consolation goal for the locals.

The win lifted Barcelona into fourth place on 42 points from 24 games, tied with Atletico who are fifth on goal difference. Real Madrid top the table with 57 points.

Barca were once again clinical upfront, scoring four goals from only six shots on target. They have now netted 10 goals in their last three league games.

"We are beginning to find that efficiency that we were lacking earlier in the season," captain Sergio Busquets told reporters.

"I hope Aubameyang is that one piece that we were missing upfront. He is a great player that arrived hungry because he was not getting many opportunities at his last club. It is a luxury having him in our team."

It was also a busy afternoon for the video assistant referee, who had to intervene at two key points, disallowing a first-half goal for Valencia after spotting that the ball was inches out of play at the start of the move, and later overturning a penalty for Barca due to Aubameyang being very narrowly offside.

Barca appear to be refinding their confidence in the last few weeks under manager Xavi Hernandez. They were in charge of possession from the beginning, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen was solid at the back, frustrating almost all Valencia's efforts to fight back.

Premier League reschedules four postponed matches for matchweek 26

Midfield duo Donny van de Beek and Dele Alli get chances to rebuild their faltering careers at Everton after making moves on Monday`s transfer deadline day, while Barcelona are set to rescue Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from his Arsenal nightmare.

The English Premier League saw the most action on the final day of transfer activity until the end of Europe`s top five leagues` domestic seasons, with Tottenham Hotspur and Everton the busiest clubs.

Alli`s permanent switch to Goodison Park from Spurs represents a fresh start for the 25-year-old, who has fallen from grace having been a key figure for club and country only a few years ago.

The midfielder made only seven Premier League starts last season under former coach Jose Mourinho and has been unable to win his first-team spot back on a regular basis under new boss Antonio Conte. Alli last made an international appearance in June 2019.

"I`m delighted to have signed for Everton, a huge club with a great fanbase and history," Alli said. "I`m eager to get started and can`t wait for my first game in an Everton shirt."

With Alli headed for Everton, that made room at Tottenham for two new arrivals in the shape of midfield pairing Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus.

There was further clearing of the decks from Conte on Monday, with another player who has flattered to deceive for Spurs - club record signing Tanguy Ndombele - joining former club Olympique Lyonnais on loan.

The writing was on the wall for Ndombele when he was booed off by his own supporters during last month`s FA Cup match against Morecambe.

It is new beginnings aplenty at Everton, with new boss Frank Lampard confirmed as the club`s new manager on Monday. He added two fresh faces to his squad before the deadline passed.

Alli is joined by another midfielder desperate to show what he can do in Netherlands international Van de Beek.
To say his dream move to Manchester United did not work out would be an understatement, as Van de Beek`s first season with the club was spent looking on from the sidelines under previous coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The arrival of interim manager Ralf Rangnick has only made things worse, with the Dutchman yet to start a Premier League match this term, mustering just 69 minutes all season in the English top flight.

The 24-year-old will hope that under a coach who scored Premier League goals for fun from midfield as a player, he can learn a few things in training to turn his fortunes around, returning to United in the summer a different proposition altogether.

"I had a really positive meeting with the new coach," he said. "We have the same ideas about football and he had a lot of influence on my decision."

Aubameyang`s impending departure from Arsenal marks the end of a precipitous fall after four years in North London. His decision to renew his contract in 2020 delighted Arsenal fans, having seen the striker score 22 league goals in both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaigns.

However, he could only muster 10 league strikes the following term as Arsenal finished eighth, and things have deteriorated further for Aubameyang this season.

The 32-year-old striker has not played for Arsenal since December after manager Mikel Arteta stripped him of the captaincy due to a "disciplinary breach".

The free transfer to Barcelona has been agreed late on Monday, according to widespread reports, as Aubameyang gets set to limp out the door after scoring just four Premier League goals in 2021-22.

Arsenal were so desperate to get him off their books they will let him leave for nothing, 18 months before his contract concludes. Barcelona have done plenty of rebuilding in the transfer window, with England`s Premier League where they chose to do most of their shopping. Adama Traore arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan while Manchester City sold Ferran Torres to the Catalan club.

The feel-good story of deadline day was the return of Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen to football, as he signed for Premier League club Brentford, seven months after he suffered a cardiac arrest during a European Championship match.

The most expensive signing of the window remained new Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, who left Fiorentina for a deal worth up to 80 million euros ($89 million), plus other charges.

Donny Van de Beek and Delle Alli join Everton, Aubameyang's Arsenal nightmare set to end

Diogo Jota scored twice to send Liverpool to the EFL Cup final as they defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the second leg of their semi-final on Thursday night.

EFL Cup: Liverpool reach final with Diogo Jota's double against Arsenal, to face Chelsea

Liverpool were frustrated by 10-man Arsenal in a 0-0 League Cup semi-final first leg on Thursday at Anfield where the visitors defended superbly after Granit Xhaka`s early sending off.

Switzerland international midfielder Xhaka was shown a red card in the 24th minute for a high challenge on Diogo Jota at the edge of the area, catching the Portuguese forward in the ribs and denying him a scoring opportunity.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta responded by bringing on defender Rob Holding in place of striker Eddie Nketiah, the hat-trick hero against League One side Sunderland in the quarter-finals, leaving Alexandre Lacazette as the lone man up front.

Despite Liverpool enjoying most of the possession, Arsenal kept them out with an impressive performance under pressure and still looked dangerous on the break.

The hosts were toothless without their potent strike pairing of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who are playing at the Africa Cup of Nations for Egypt and Senegal respectively.

"I would have preferred to score the goal rather than them getting the red card, especially after the game now," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp told Sky Sports.

"It`s a two-leg game and it`s halftime and I can`t remember one time in my life when I was sitting with 0-0 at halftime wherever it was and thought, `Oh, we have no chance any more`."

The winners after next week`s second leg in London will face Chelsea, who beat Tottenham Hotspur nL1N2TS2YF 3-0 on aggregate on Wednesday, in the final at Wembley on Feb. 27.

Arsenal`s best opportunity came in the 71st minute when England international Bukayo Saka forced a crouching save from Alisson with the first real shot on target of the game.

Liverpool`s Takumi Minamino then missed a golden chance when the Japanese midfielder fired high over the bar from close range in the 90th.

The miss summed up the night for Liverpool, who lacked composure and snatched at chances against opponents dumped out of the FA Cup in the third round at Championship (second-tier)side Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

"There is so much fight in this team and it showed today," said Arsenal defender Ben White, who was man of the match.

"We dug deep and got the result that we needed ... it`s hard enough to come here with 11 men and to get one sent off straight away is not good. But absolutely superb from everyone.

"You have to concentrate the whole game and (have) a bit of luck. The result is well deserved. It`s nice to defend like that as a defender."

Arteta hailed his players for their fighting spirit.

"We played the game that we had to play, which is not our game," said the Spaniard, whose side picked up a few injuries with right back Cedric Soares taken off after only 12 minutes and replacement Calum Chambers struggling at the end.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to miss Manchester City game after COVID-19 positive test

Manchester City opened up a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a first half demolition of Leicester in a thrilling 6-3 win as Arsenal and Tottenham were also comfortable winners on Sunday.

Three of the scheduled nine Boxing Day matches were postponed due to coronavirus outbreaks as Britain battles record numbers of cases caused by the Omicron strain of the virus.

Earlier this week, Premier League clubs rejected the option of temporarily halting the season to allow a circuit breaker for infections.

And a stop to the season may be the only way to slow City's charge towards a fourth title in five seasons as Pep Guardiola's men have now won nine league games in a row.

Leicester were blown away by four goals inside 25 minutes.

Kevin De Bruyne blasted home to open the floodgates before Riyad Mahrez netted against his former club from the penalty spot.

Ilkay Gundogan rounded off a brilliant City team move to make it 3-0 before Raheem Sterling won and converted the champions' second penalty.

Leicester are one of the sides to have been decimated by Covid infections and injuries in recent weeks, but they produced a stirring second half fightback thanks to James Maddison.

The midfielder pulled a goal back before leading a break finished off by Ademola Lookman.

Kelechi Iheanacho made it 4-3 when he bundled home from close range after Ederson could only turn Maddison's shot onto the bar.

Spurs moved up to fifth, six points behind their north London rivals but with three games in hand, after easing past a depleted Crystal Palace.

Palace's request for the game to be postponed was dismissed by the Premier League despite a coronavirus outbreak that left them without manager Patrick Vieira.

The Eagles were still able to field a strong side that featured just one change from their previous outing.

Premier League: Manchester City score six past Leicester, Arsenal, Spurs register win in their matches

Eddie Nketiah scored a hat-trick as a much-changed Arsenal marched into the League Cup semi-finals by beating Sunderland 5-1 on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old striker is out of contract at the end of the season and gave potential suitors in the January transfer window a reminder of his predatory prowess in front of goal.

League Cup: Eddie Nketiah hat-trick helps Arsenal enter semi-finals

Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli's double helped Arsenal ease to a dominant 4-1 win at Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday.

In the only Premier League game to go ahead on Saturday due to a huge rise in COVID-19 cases among players, Arsenal blew beleaguered Leeds away with a blistering first-half display.

Having shipped seven goals at Manchester City in midweek, Leeds were repeatedly carved apart in the opening period, with Martinelli's brace putting Arsenal 2-0 up inside 28 minutes.

Frustrations were palpable all round Elland Road as Bukayo Saka added a third for Arsenal three minutes before the break, with the scoreline not at all flattering for the dominant London side.

Leeds did threaten a late comeback when Rafinha converted a penalty 15 minutes from time, but substitute Emile Smith Rowe's late goal put the game beyond the hosts.

Arsenal's third league success in a row consolidated fourth spot in the standings, while Leeds' second successive hammering left them down in 16th, five clear of the drop zone, but having played three more games than Burnley in 18th.

"I am very happy with the performance, the week that we had, and the way we are moving forward," Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta said.

"It is always difficult to play against Leeds. They didn’t give up on the second half. I am pleased, it is not easy to play the way we did in this atmosphere. We made a real statement."

The visitors were well on top from the start against an injury-ravaged Leeds. Home goalkeeper Illan Meslier was forced into a fine save as the hosts' defence still looked shell-shocked after their mauling at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

Saka should have scored from the rebound, but Arsenal did not have to wait long for the opener as Martinelli, leading the line in place of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who was again left out for a disciplinary breach, arrowed a shot into the top corner.

The Gunners continued to dominate, with Scotland full back Kieran Tierney forcing another fine save out of Meslier, before the hosts mustered their first attack as Rafinha fired wide.

Martinelli, whose Arsenal career has been plagued by injury, made it two after brilliantly latching onto Granit Xhaka`s through pass and lofting the ball over Meslier.

Saka's goal had an element of fortune about it as a deflection took it past Meslier whose performance ensured it was only three at the break.

Arsenal's 11 shots on target in the first half is the most in the opening 45 minutes by any side in a single Premier League match since 2003-04, when Opta started collecting such stats.

Leeds improved in the second half and deservedly got a lifeline when Ben White fouled Joe Gelhardt in the penalty area and Rafinha hammered in the spot-kick.

Without injured striker Patrick Bamford, however, Leeds lacked the firepower to complete the turnaround and Smith Rowe`s calm finish ended their faint hopes.

It was the first time Leeds have lost three successive league games under manager Marcelo Bielsa.

"There were more chances generated than the goals that they scored," Bielsa said. "When we lost the ball in our own half, this increased the amount of chances they (Arsenal) could create.

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been dropped as the team's captain following a disciplinary breach last week, the Premier League club said on Tuesday. The Gabon international will also be not considered for selection for Wednesday`s league game at home to West Ham United, the club added.

"We expect all our players, particularly our captain, to work to the rules and standards we have all set and agreed," Arsenal said in a statement. "We are fully focused on tomorrow`s match." Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta dropped Aubameyang from the squad that beat Southampton 3-0 at the weekend due to a disciplinary breach, but the Spanish boss had declined to reveal exactly what the striker had done.

The Athletic reported that Aubameyang was dropped after returning late from a trip abroad. Alexandre Lacazette led the team against Southampton in Aubameyang`s absence. Aubameyang, who signed a new three-year contract with the north London club last year, has struggled this season, scoring only four Premier League goals -- the last of which was in October against Aston Villa. The 32-year-old had been dropped before for disciplinary reasons, with Arteta excluding the striker from their 2-1 derby win over north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur last season.
Arsenal are sixth in the league standings on 26 points after 16 matches, two points outside the top four.

Everton eased some of the pressure on manager Rafa Benitez as they ground out a comeback 2-1 home win over Arsenal in the Premier League on Monday, with Demarai Gray netting a stunning stoppage-time winner after setting up the equaliser.

Brazilian forward Richarlison, who had two goals scrapped for marginal offsides after VAR checks, had levelled in the 79th minute after Gray hit the crossbar, cancelling out Martin Odegaard`s first-half opener for the visitors.

The outcome left Arsenal seventh on 23 points from 15 games, four points outside the top four, while Everton, who announced on Sunday that director of football Marcel Brands https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/struggling-everton-part-ways-with-director-football-brands-2021-12-06 had left his position, climbed to 12th on 18 points.

Everton captain Seamus Coleman praised the home fans who lifted the Toffees in the face of adversity after they fell behind, having also singled out Gray`s fine performance.

"We knew whatever goes on behind the scenes, the fans always come here to support us," Coleman told Sky Sports. "They got behind us from minute one to minute 90 and got us over the line.

"I tell him (Gray) every day. Sometimes these players don`t realise how good they can be. He has bundles of ability. He needs to work hard every day as that is what the top players do. He has done that this week."

Everton dominated the first half and created several half-chances before Richarlison headed in a 44th-minute free kick from Andros Townsend, only for his effort to be chalked off.

Norwegian Odegaard then scored on the stroke of halftime from Arsenal`s first purposeful move, steering the ball superbly past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as he got on the end of Kieran Tierney`s cross from the left.

Richarlison thought he had equalised in the 57th minute when he drove the ball inside the near post from close range, but Everton were again denied by VAR leaving the Brazilian shaking his head in disbelief.

But it was third time lucky for Richarlison as he beat Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale with a looping header from a rebound after Gray`s long-range shot cannoned off the woodwork, setting up a frantic climax.

With a share of the spoils looming, Gray sent the home fans into raptures when he cut inside two players and beat Ramsdale with a thunderbolt from 25 metres which went in off the post, giving Everton their first league win in nine games.

Chelsea thrashed Arsenal 3-0 to win the 2020-21 Women's FA Cup at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, completing the English treble for the first time after winning the League Cup and Women's Super League title earlier this year.

Fran Kirby scored the opening goal after only two minutes and Sam Kerr netted a second-half brace, the latter a delightful chipped finish, to seal a third FA Cup for Emma Hayes's side and a third trophy of 2021.

Last season's FA Cup was interrupted, then postponed to this campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chelsea began the game second to Arsenal in the league standings, having lost to them on the opening day of the season.

However, they got off to the best possible start when Kirby pounced on a defensive lapse by the Gunners defence, who failed to clear their lines, and hit the ball into the bottom corner.

Chelsea dominated the first half in front of almost 41,000 fans while Arsenal looked a shadow of the side who were so far unbeaten in all competitions this campaign. They were not helped by the absence of England defender Leah Williamson through injury.

The Blues were incredibly wasteful in front of goal, though, with Kirby having efforts saved by goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger and Australia striker Kerr hitting the bar when clear through one on one.

Kerr made up for that miss shortly after halftime, however, when she ran on to a long ball and cut inside the penalty area, toying with defender Lotte Wubben-Moy before firing a low shot inside the near post.

Jonas Eidevall, in his first season as Arsenal manager, urged his side forward but they were always crowded out by the Chelsea defence who expertly marked key Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema out of the game. Arsenal failed to have a shot on target.

The result was sealed for Chelsea in the 77th minute when player of the match Kerr chipped the ball over Zinsberger from the right-hand side of the penalty area.

After making up for her misses in the first half, Kerr became the second Australian to lift the FA Cup after former Matilda Taryn Rockall who won it with Arsenal in 1999.

"It wouldn’t go in in the first half -– it could have been 4-0 or 5-0 but they defended well. We knew that if we kept pushing at some point they would go in and they did," Kerr told the BBC.

"I'm paid to score goals but our defence was amazing and it was a team effort – I can't wait to party!"

The match was played on the 100th anniversary of the English FA banning professional women's football in 1921. The ban lasted nearly 50 years until it was rescinded in January 1970.

Premier League: Michael Carrick to lead Man United against Arsenal as Ralf Rangnick awaits work visa

Arsenal returned to winning ways and deepened Newcastle United`s relegation worries as goals by Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli sealed a comfortable 2-0 Premier League win on Saturday.

Bottom club Newcastle had new manager Eddie Howe on the touchline for the first time, but it made no difference as they were well beaten and remain without a league win after 13 games.

Arsenal, whose 10-match unbeaten run in all competitions came to a juddering halt at Liverpool last week, dominated the opening half with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missing a sitter.

But their patience was rewarded as Saka finished superbly in the 56th minute before substitute Martinelli volleyed the second with his first touch.

Newcastle`s Jonjo Shelvey was denied by the woodwork in the first half but once they went behind, the 17th defeat in 18 league games against Arsenal looked inevitable.

Arsenal stayed fifth in the table, level on points with fourth-placed West Ham United while Newcastle, who have six points and are five behind 17th-placed Leeds United, are the sixth different team to fail to win any of their opening 13 Premier League games.

Of those, only Derby County in 2000-01 survived relegation. Howe, who had to watch last week`s 3-3 draw against Brentford from a hotel room due to a positive COVID-19 test, took some encouragement from his team`s display.

"I thought it was a good performance, especially the start. We were good for the first half an hour," he said.

"The pleasing thing today is how we started and finished the game. We created chances."

On a raw afternoon in north London, there was little to warm the hearts of Newcastle`s travelling Toon Army.
Their side were resolute and had Aaron Ramsdale not tipped Shelvey`s curling effort against the crossbar things might have been different.

Arsenal were over-deliberate but still carved out chances with Saka just failing to score on the stretch from Nuno Tavares`s superb diagonal pass.

Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka, recalled for his first appearance of the season in place of Karl Darlow after recovering from injury, produced an acrobatic save to keep out Martin Odegaard`s free kick.

As halftime approached, Dubravka saved Emile Smith Rowe`s header and as the ball fell for Aubameyang he contrived to hit the post with the goal gaping.

When Arsenal finally cracked Newcastle`s defence it was no surprise Saka and Smith Rowe were involved. The latter combined well with Tavares who slipped a pass in for Saka to fire left-footed past Dubravka from a narrow angle.

Newcastle claimed a penalty when Callum Wilson chased Shelvey`s long pass forward but was knocked off balance by the covering Gabriel and within a minute they were two down.

Martinelli, who had just replaced the injured Saka, was picked out by a flighted pass from Takehiro Tomiyasu and as Dubravka came out the Brazilian planted a volley into the net.

Newcastle now face back-to-back home games against fellow strugglers Norwich City and Burnley.

"We just have to look at the first one," Howe said. "Momentum in football is so important. We need to get that win as quickly as we can."

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka will be sidelined for three months after suffering a significant injury to his medial knee ligament against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, the Premier League club said on Wednesday.

Xhaka had to be taken off after 82 minutes in Arsenal`s 3-1 win against Spurs on Sunday following a challenge from forward Lucas Moura. Arsenal, however, said that the Swiss international would not need surgery.

"A specialist consultation took place in London on Tuesday evening which has determined that Granit does not require surgery," the club said in a statement.
"Granit`s recovery and rehabilitation programme will start immediately and we are aiming for him to be back in action in approximately three months."

The 29-year-old, who was linked with a move to Serie A side AS Roma in the summer but ended up signing a one-year contract extension at the Emirates Stadium, has made five appearances in all competitions for Arsenal this season.
