'My mother is going through some health issues': Arsenal's Aubameyang reveals reason behind absence

Manchester City thrashed West Brom 5-0 to move back top of the Premier League on Tuesday as Arsenal aided their push towards the European places with a 3-1 win at Southampton.

City have now won 11 consecutive games since West Brom earned a shock 1-1 draw at the Etihad last month.

Pep Guardiola's men have hit top form since and did not miss the presence of the injured Kevin De Bruyne in blowing away the Baggies by scoring four goals before half-time.

Ilkay Gundogan opened the floodgates by curling home from the edge of the box before Joao Cancelo's controversial strike doubled City's lead.

The West Brom defence was distracted by a wrongly raised offside flag before the Portuguese full-back found the net, but the goal stood after a VAR review.

Gundogan then took his tally to seven goals in his last eight league games before Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling rounded off the scoring.

"There's not really a secret," Gundogan said of his scoring streak. "I'm just in the right spaces at the right moment. I'm in a bit more of an offensive role, if I get the chance close to the box I try to make the right decisions."

West Brom have now conceded 17 goals in Sam Allardyce's four home games in charge as they remain second bottom of the table, six points off safety.

<h2>- Arsenal on the rise -</h2>

Guardiola's former assistant Mikel Arteta is also enjoying a fine run of form as Arsenal have taken 16 from the last possible 18 points.

The Gunners avenged their FA Cup to Southampton at the weekend despite falling behind after three minutes to Stuart Armstrong's sweet strike.

Nicolas Pepe quickly levelled before Bukayo Saka rounded Alex McCarthy and slotted home to give the visitors at half-time lead.

"I think we were good from the start. We conceded a goal from a corner but responded straight away," said Arteta.

"It showed a lot of intelligent and resilience from the team in the way they managed the game."

Alexandre Lacazette sealed a vital three points 18 minutes from time as Arsenal moved up to eighth and within five points of the top four.

<h2>- West Ham go fourth -</h2>

West Ham occupy the fourth Champions League place as Tomas Soucek scored twice in a 3-2 win at Crystal Palace.

The Hammers suffered an early setback when Wilfried Zaha put Palace in front after just three minutes.

But the stronger mentality that David Moyes has lauded in West Ham this season showed as Soucek struck twice in 16 minutes to turn the game around.

Only Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes has scored more Premier League goals from midfield than the Czech since he joined from Slavia Prague a year ago.

Craig Dawson headed in Jarrod Bowen's corner 25 minutes from time to make it 3-1 before Michy Batshuayi scored a late consolation for Palace.

A sixth consecutive win in all competitions takes Moyes's men above Liverpool in the table and Jurgen Klopp's struggling Reds will be wary of their trip to the London Stadium on Sunday.

At the other end of the table, Newcastle lost 2-1 at home to Leeds to stretch their winless run to 11 games

"This league is demanding and cruel at times," said beleaguered Magpies boss Steve Bruce.

Raphinha slotted home Rodrigo's cut-back to give Marcelo Bielsa's men a deserved half-time lead.

Miguel Almiron levelled with Newcastle's first goal for five games early in the second half, but parity lasted only four minutes before Jack Harrison's sensational finish with the outside of his left foot claimed all three points for the visitors.

Newcastle have a seven-point cushion over the bottom three, but have now played two games more than Fulham in 18th.

Holders Arsenal bowed out of the FA Cup in the fourth round as Gabriel's first-half own goal condemned them to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Southampton on Saturday.

The Gunners' defence of the trophy they won by beating Chelsea last August ended with something of a whimper as Mikel Arteta's side struggled with repeatedly sloppy defending.

Southampton deservedly took the lead in the 24th minute when Kyle Walker-Peters drilled a low cross into the area and Gabriel inadvertently touched it past keeper Bernd Leno.

Arsenal could have fallen further behind with home striker Danny Ings going close for the hosts on several occasions.

The visitors did apply some second-half pressure but Southampton were comfortable as they held on to set up a fifth-round clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta survived a difficult run of form earlier this season and looks to have turned the club around and the Spaniard said his Chelsea counterpart Frank Lampard should also be given time to get them back on track.

Lampard is under huge pressure at Chelsea after Tuesday`s 2-0 loss to Leicester City saw them slip to eighth. They have now lost five of their last eight in the Premier League.

"I have known Frank for a few years and I spent some time with him and I would like the club to support him and give him a chance," Arteta, who like Lampard captained the club he now manages, told British media.

"He has huge experience as a player, he is an icon over there. You need time, and something we have not had in this calendar year is time to work on anything."

Arsenal`s form nosedived during November and December and Arteta only managed to turn the tide with a win over Chelsea on Dec. 26. They are now unbeaten in six games in all competitions.

"I can only talk about what I have experienced ... it was full support in difficult times," said Arteta, whose side face Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.

"Fortunately if they see what you are trying to do is going to have rewards in the future, and they are a little bit patient, most of the time it pays off."

Fenerbahce are signing 32-year-old German midfielder Mesut&nbsp;Ozil, who is set to end his eight-year spell at Premier League side Arsenal, the Turkish club announced on Sunday.

Ozil&nbsp;earlier said he was "very excited" to play for the former Turkish champions and that he was fit despite missing nearly a year of football.

He has not played for Arsenal since March and was left out of their Premier League and Europa League squads this season.

Ozil&nbsp;has long been linked with a move to Fenerbahce, Turkey's second most-decorated club, who said in a statement&nbsp;on Sunday: "Our club is bringing Mesut&nbsp;Ozil&nbsp;to Istanbul to continue the transfer processes."

Speaking to Turkish broadcaster NTV,&nbsp;Ozil, who has Turkish ancestry, said he was looking forward to playing for Fenerbahce, a club he said he has supported all his life, adding he would arrive in Istanbul early on Monday to seal his move.

"I am a Fenerbahce fan. That is why I am very happy to be coming to Turkey with Fenerbahce," he said.

"I'm very excited. God gave me the chance to wear this jersey as a Fenerbahce fan. God willing, I will carry it with honour and do everything I can for the team," he added.

"Of course, I'm missing a few matches. I haven't played in a match in a while, but I am physically fit, I have no issues," he said, adding that he had been training with the first team at Arsenal during his time off the pitch.

Ozil&nbsp;also posted an image on Twitter which showed his family seated inside a private jet with Fenerbahce flags in the background.

Arsenal have yet announce his departure but British media reported on Saturday that they had reached an agreement in principle to terminate the World Cup-winner's contract.

Signed in 2013 for a then-club record fee of about 42 million pounds ($57 million) from Real Madrid,&nbsp;Ozil&nbsp;played a crucial role under Arsene Wenger in ending Arsenal's trophy drought, winning the FA Cup in his first season.

But he was marginalised under Wenger's replacement Unai Emery and by current manager Mikel Arteta, who said the player's omission from the squad was for "football reasons".

Fenerbahce confirm move for Arsenal midfielder Ozil

Mikel Arteta admitted Arsenal were suffering from fatigue after their recent revival ground to a halt in a scrappy 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace on Thursday.

Arteta's side had won their previous four matches in all competitions, but they were fortunate extend their unbeaten run to five games.

Palace were unable to convert several first half chances at the Emirates Stadium and, although Arsenal improved after the interval, they missed a chance to climb into the top half of the Premier League.

"I wanted to see a win and a few goals but we were fatigued. I cannot fault the spirit but it wasn't enough," Arteta said.

"We created a lot of situations against the low block but there was a period when we gave the ball away too much.

"We are playing a lot of games and you can see fatigue. Many players aren't fresh. We lacked the quality in the final third to win the game."

Arsenal sit in 11th place, eight points adrift of the Champions League places as they continue to pay the price for their worst start to a season since 1974-75.

Just before Christmas, Arsenal were only four points above the relegation zone, so their current position 12 points away from the bottom three affords Arteta some much-needed breathing space.

But this disjointed display underlined the attacking flaws that have stopped Arsenal building on last season's FA Cup triumph.

Palace have only won one of their past eight matches in all competitions and are one point behind Arsenal in 13th.

<h2>- Arsenal struggles -</h2>

Emile Smith-Rowe, Arsenal's promising young midfielder, started after scoring against Newcastle as a substitute last weekend.

But Kiernan Tierney was absent with muscle tightness and the Gunners missed the Scotland left-back's busy presence.

"Tierney is a real threat and the way we attack on the left is really important but he is injured and we have to find a solution. He will have an MRI scan tomorrow," Arteta said.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has endured a difficult season and, once again, Arsenal's captain was a diffident figure.

The Gabon forward briefly sparked into life and tested Vicente Guaita with a fierce strike that was parried by the Palace keeper.

But Palace were finding their feet on a wet evening and Granit Xhaka had to make a perfectly timed sliding tackle to stop Wilfried Zaha getting a shot away after the forward slalomed into the penalty area.

Palace broke through the Arsenal defence again when Christian Benteke scooped his shot wastefully over from 10 yards after good work by Tyrick Mitchell.

James Tomkins was inches away from giving Roy Hodgson's men the lead as the Palace defender got above Rob Holding to glance his header against the bar from Eberechi Eze's free-kick.

Arsenal were struggling to get out of their own half and Bernd Leno had to make a superb save to repel Benteke's header from Mitchell's cross.

Arteta's half-time team talk seemed like it might have the desired effect and Hector Bellerin drilled just wide from the edge of the area in the opening minute of the second half.

Arsenal threatened again as Bukayo Saka forced Guaita to block at the near post before Alexandre Lacazette blasted into the side-netting after a flowing move.

Arteta sent on Nicolas Pepe and Thomas Partey, back after a month out with a thigh injury.

But the expected push never came and Palace were able to keep the misfiring Gunners at bay with ease.

We lacked the quality in the final third to win the game." Arsenal sit in 11th place, eight points adrift of the Champions League places as they continue to pay the price for their worst start to a season since 1974-75. - Arsenal struggles - Emile Smith-Rowe, Arsenal's promising young midfielder, started after scoring against Newcastle as a substitute last weekend.

'Fatigued' Arsenal frustrated in Palace stalemate

Gunners playmaker Mesut Ozil will reportedly be signed by Fenerbahce from Arsenal for three and a half years for an undisclosed fee, Turkey's private Demiroren news agency and other Turkish media reported on Wednesday.

Mesut Ozil has not played for the London-based club since before the first lockdown last year. He was not included in Arteta's squad for Premier League.&nbsp;

Ozil is one of the highest-paid players in Arsenal and has previously refused MLS clubs. However, the 32-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season.&nbsp;
Fenerbahce Chairman Ali Koc said previously that signing Ozil, who has Turkish ancestry, was a "nice dream" for the club, who have suffered from financial woes in recent years. Koc had said Fenerbahce would need to offload players to make any transfers in January.

The German player fuelled the transfer speculation with the Turkish club after an Instagram post about Istanbul on Tuesday. The German has not played for Arsenal since March 2020 and was not named in the squad list for the first half of the current Premier League season.

He has long been linked with a move to Fenerbahce, Turkey's second most decorated club.

Last week, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had said the club would wait for the January transfer window to make a final call about the German national's fate. But the club is looking to offload players in January to trim the squad.

Arsenal are currently 11th in the standings on 23 points, while Fenerbahce are fifth in Turkey's top tier Super Lig on 29 points, two behind league leaders Gaziantep.

Mesut Ozil to move to Fenerbahce? Turkish media reports fuel speculations

Mikel Arteta said Thursday that Arsenal's priority in the January transfer window is to trim their bloated squad as he seeks to&nbsp;build on a mini-revival at the Premier League club.

The Gunners were able to offload Emiliano Martinez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the summer window while Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira departed on loan.

But forgotten man Mesut Ozil remained at the Emirates along with Shkodran Mustafi and Sead Kolasinac, who have barely featured in the Premier League this season.

Arsenal announced later on Thursday that Kolasinac had agreed to join Bundesliga side Schalke on loan for the rest of the season.

The club have been linked with a loan move for Real Madrid playmaker Isco in January but first of all technical director Edu will attempt to raise funds by moving on those who are surplus to requirements.

"There are some players that are going to go on loan and going to leave and that is the priority at the moment," Arteta said ahead of Saturday's trip to West Brom.

"We cannot sustain the numbers that we have in certain positions and we are looking to do that, and then we will see if we have the right opportunity in the positions where we need some more help."

The pressure on Arteta has eased after wins against Chelsea and Brighton lifted Arsenal to 13th in the Premier League table following a miserable run.

Bukayo Saka, who starred in the 1-0 win at Brighton on Tuesday, is expected to be fit for the match against Sam Allardyce's West Brom.

The teenager was forced off during the latter stages of the victory after a strong challenge, but should recover while David Luiz and Willian, who both tested negative for Covid-19 earlier this week, may return this weekend after a bout of illness.

Allardyce this week called for a "circuit-breaker" in the Premier League as coronavirus cases spike in Britain but league bosses said the competition would continue as planned.

"I think we have shown the system is working," said Arteta. "In the last week or so something has happened and we will have more restrictions and more tests to try to be as efficient as we were before and we will see, but I think it can work and we can carry on."

'Best medicine in these situations is..': Mikel Arteta on players' lack of confidence before Chelsea clash

Manchester City increased the pressure on Mikel Arteta as the League Cup holders powered into the semi-finals with a 4-1 demolition of troubled Arsenal on Tuesday.

City ensured it will be a miserable Christmas for beleaguered Arsenal boss Arteta by condemning his side to a fourth defeat in their last six games in all competitions.

Gabriel Jesus took just three minutes to put City ahead at the Emirates Stadium and although Alexandre Lacazette equalised, it was another night of torture for Arteta.

Arsenal's reserve keeper Alex Runarsson was made a horrendous mistake when he allowed Riyad Mahrez's free-kick to squirm into the net.

Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte piled on the pain for Arsenal with further goals to seal the rout.

"It's a hard one to take considering how the game went. This level of opponent, when you give the goals away it makes the game impossible," Arteta said.

"A lot of strange things are happening in every game and that makes things really difficult.

"Runarsson has not played a lot of games for us. We all make mistakes and have to support him."

Languishing 15th in the Premier League after losing five of their last seven games -- their worst start to a season since 1974-75 -- Arsenal are in crisis.

Amid talk of dressing room unrest, Arteta, who worked as Pep Guardiola's City assistant before joining Arsenal 12 months ago, will be in danger of the sack if Arsenal's wretched run continues into the new year.

"We have to turn it around. If we don't, we are in big trouble. So that is the moment which is going to decide our season," Arteta said.

"On the basis of what we have shown tonight against difficult opponents, I have fighters in my team."

Guardiola defended Arteta, saying: "He is an incredible manager. I know his proposals and what he will do.

"Not even a little run of bad results is going to change my opinion."

Arteta made eight changes from Saturday's defeat at Everton, yet City made seven switches of their own and still went ahead in the blink of an eye.

Jesus, without a goal in his previous seven games, started the move wide on the left when he fed Foden and made an astute run into the six-yard box.

Oleksandr Zinchenko's cross reached Jesus and, aided by Runarsson's missed punch, the Brazilian netted with a clinical header at the near post while the Gunners' defence stood and watched.

Arsenal equalised against the run of play in the 31st minute as Gabriel Martinelli's cross from the byline found Lacazette, who threw himself forward to guide his header into the roof of the net.

City were gifted the lead again in the 54th minute when Runarsson made a complete hash of dealing with Mahrez's free-kick, the Iceland international allowing a shot that was straight at him to slip through his gloves like a bar of soap.

<h2>- Knockout blow -</h2>

With no VAR in the League Cup, Foden's run from a slightly offside position went unchecked and he delivered the knockout blow with a cool flick over Runarsson.

Foden turned provider in the 73rd minute with a teasing cross that was headed in by Laporte.

City trail eight points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, but they are unbeaten in their last nine games in all competitions -- conceding just two goals in that period.

Guardiola's men have won the League Cup for the last three seasons and are bidding to become the first team to win it four years in a row since Liverpool from 1981 to 1984.

Brentford, fourth in the Championship, enjoyed a shock 1-0 win against Premier League side Newcastle thanks to Josh Dasilva's 66th minute goal in west London.

Thomas Frank's team had already knocked out West Bromwich Albion, Southampton and Fulham en route to the quarter-finals.&nbsp;

Arteta's problems mount as Man City reach League Cup semis at Arsenal's expense

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno says there is no time for the players to feel sorry for themselves after an eighth Premier League defeat of the season ramped up the pressure on manager Mikel Arteta.

Sunday is an unhappy first anniversary for the Gunners boss as he reflects on a 2-1 reverse at Everton that extended their winless run to seven league matches and left them just four points above the Premier League's bottom three.

"A lot of things are going wrong for us but we don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves, we have to fight for every ball, for our team-mates," said Leno.

"Now the confidence is not at the top level but the only thing that can be said is we should stick together and come out of this situation."

The 28-year-old German said Arsenal showed a good attitude in the second half at Goodison Park, which he said demonstrated the team was "alive".

"We were fighting for each other, pushing each other," he added. "It is a tough time but the only thing we can (do is) analyse the game and stay positive."

Arsenal have suffered their worst start to a season since the 1974/75 campaign, with just 14 points from as many games, and they are seven points worse off than when they sacked Unai Emery last year.

They have scored just 12 league goals and were not helped at Goodison by the absence of forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who had a calf problem.

Arteta admitted his team's lack of goal threat was hampering them.

"Our conversion rate has been really low and is it something we have to improve dramatically," said the Spaniard. "When we needed some luck we hit the post and we didn't put some chances away.

"Normally when you are under this pressure and in this position in the table you get battered by teams but that is not the case.

"I see the spirit in the team, how they are, how they are willing to do things the right way."

Arsenal have a break from the Premier League with a League Cup quarter-final at home to Manchester City on Tuesday. Leno hopes that game might offer some respite.

"Maybe in this game we don't have the pressure like we have in the Premier League because of the table," he said. "It is only one game and the only thing we want to do is go to the semi-final."

Arsenal 'don't have time' to feel sorry for themselves, says Leno

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said that he loves to be a part of football management despite having a challenging season in the Premier League. He also described his first year in charge at the Emirates Stadium as one of the most challenging years in the club's history.

The Spaniard completes one year at the club as a manager on Sunday.

"When you get to a club that goes through what we have in a year and on top of that we have a pandemic which is affecting the whole industry ... to do your profession is even more challenging," Arteta told a news conference.

"At the same time I'm telling you I love what I do and I feel so lucky and privileged to be at this football club.

"The highlight of the year is the two trophies... It could have been a really positive year but the recent form in the Premier League has taken the gloss off what we have done this year. We have to accept our form has not been good enough."

Arsenal are winless in their last six league games and find themselves 15th in the table with 14 points.

Arteta, however, is confident he still has the full backing of the board.

"You need results but after a big shakeup we need to find the stability," Arteta said. "We need time, we all knew that - at least the people who made the decision with me to start this new project - it was going to take time."

Arsenal's Arteta talks about loving football management despite challenges

Mikel Arteta insists he is strong enough to cope with the pressure of Arsenal's dismal run as the Gunners boss dismissed their recent struggles as merely a "blip".

Arteta has faced calls for his sacking after Sunday's 1-0 home defeat against Burnley condemned Arsenal to their worst start to a season since 1974.

Arsenal have lost their last four home league games -- their worst sequence since 1959 -- and another defeat at the Emirates Stadium against in-form Southampton on Wednesday would pile further pressure on Arteta.

The Spaniard was given a vote of confidence by Arsenal technical director Edu on Monday, but Arteta admitted he had to shoulder the responsiblity for the team's five-match winless run in the league.

Adamant he still retains the backing of his players, Arteta told reporters on Tuesday: "My feeling is yes but this is a question for them obviously.

"When I see the reaction and the way they try, there's not one bit that worries me that they're not trying their best, that's for sure.

"And in terms of Edu and (Manchester City manager) Pep (Guardiola), they obviously showed their appreciation, because in good moments it's very easy.&nbsp;

"In difficult moments when you have people like them giving you support and two people that know very, very well what we've been through here, obviously it's much appreciated."

<h2>- 'Take the bullets' -</h2>

Languishing in 15th place after seven defeats in their first 12 league games, Arsenal are closer to the relegation zone than the top four.

Arteta is not concerned that Arsenal now face an unthinkable relegation battle and is confident that results will turn soon.

"I want to think that we are in a blip, losing football matches makes me believe that but we need to start to win," he said.

"Because just dropping and dropping down the table is not the situation we want to be in.

"But this is our reality right now and we have to face it and we have to face it being brave, fighting and no one giving up or anything.

"It's not time to hide, it's time to put your face and your body on the line and at the moment, I'm sorry, but we have to take the bullets.

Arteta said he accepted that he bore "maximum responsibility" for the bad results.

"At the end of the day you have to win football matches and this club is too big to accept this many losses in the last weeks. So my chest is here and hit me, guys."

Granit Xhaka's needless red card for grabbing Burnley's Ashley Westwood around the neck played a key role in Arsenal's latest flop.

Angry Arsenal fans have called for the volatile Swiss midfielder to be sold, but he retains Arteta's support for now.

Asked if Xhaka had apologised to Arteta and his team-mates, the Arsenal boss said the matter had been resolved "internally".

"He has had tough times here and he's not the only one, there's a lot of players that have had rocky moments.

"But what I can say about Granit is that his professionalism and his commitment with the club and with his team-mates is maximal.

"He knows and we all know that he had a moment where he's lost it and I know the reason why. But what I cannot do is just throw everything that he has done away because he's made a mistake."

Mikel Arteta insists he is strong enough to cope with the pressure of Arsenal's dismal run as the Gunners boss dismissed their recent struggles as merely a "blip".

"And in terms of Edu and (Manchester City manager) Pep (Guardiola), they obviously showed their appreciation, because in good moments it's very easy. "In difficult moments when you have people like them giving you support and two people that know very, very well what we've been through here, obviously it's much appreciated." - 'Take the bullets' - Languishing in 15th place after seven defeats in their first 12 league games, Arsenal are closer to the relegation zone than the top four. So my chest is here and hit me, guys." Granit Xhaka's needless red card for grabbing Burnley's Ashley Westwood around the neck played a key role in Arsenal's latest flop. Under-fire Arteta vows to stop Arsenal 'blip'

Tottenham and Liverpool remain tied at the top of the Premier League after both were held to 1-1 draws at Crystal Palace and Fulham respectively, while Pierre-Emerick Aubamyeng's own goal condemned Arsenal to another shocking home defeat, going down 1-0 to Burnley on Sunday.

Leicester took advantage of slip ups by the top two to close to within one point of the leaders as James Maddison scored twice in a 3-0 rout over Brighton and Southampton are up to fourth as they also comfortably saw off Sheffield United 3-0.

Liverpool and Tottenham face each other at Anfield on Wednesday and, after Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United failed to win on Saturday, they both missed the chance to open up a gap at the top in the title race.

The champions needed a Mohamed Salah penalty 11 minutes from time to avoid an embarrassing defeat at Fulham after a dreadful first-half performance left Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp seething on the touchline.

"We needed half an hour to get our feet in the game, that's why I shouted a bit at them," said Klopp.&nbsp;

"I think in the first half an hour we could have lost the game, in the last 60 minutes we should have won it. In the end we get a point and that's it."

Bobby DeCordova-Reid's thunderous finish into the far corner to take the lead was no more than Scott Parker's side deserved as the returning Alisson Becker kept Liverpool in the game before the break.

Liverpool dominated the second-half to pin Fulham back, but needed a penalty to salvage a point when Aboubakar Kamara was penalised for handling Georginio Wijnaldum's free-kick.

Salah slammed the penalty low and just beyond the grasp of Alphonse Areola, but Fulham comfortably saw out the final 10 minutes to the delight of 2,000 fans at Craven Cottage.

<h2>- Tottenham pegged back -</h2>

Palace could also count on the return of fans to Selhurst Park for the first time in nine months to inspire a second-half fightback against Tottenham.

Harry Kane opened the scoring thanks to a goalkeeping howler from Vicente Guaita as he misjudged the England captain's long-range effort.

Spurs then sat on their lead and failed to hold out for a sixth consecutive Premier League clean sheet when Hugo Lloris failed to hold Eberechi Eze's free-kick and Jeffrey Schlupp swept home the rebound.

"We lost two points," said Spurs coach Jose Mourinho. "From 45 to 75 minutes we couldn't play or build from the back and we made lots of mistakes."

Guaita then redeemed himself with a pair of outstanding saves to deny Kane and Eric Dier as Spurs suddenly found their attacking thrust again after the equaliser.

At the other end of the table, Arsenal are now just five points above the relegation zone after a self-inflicted defeat to Burnley.

Granit Xhaka's needless red card for grabbing Ashley Westwood by the throat turned the game in Burnley's favour before Aubameyang flicked Westwood's corner into his own net 17 minutes from time.

"Again we throw the game away with a silly red card," said Arteta, who described Nicolas Pepe's sending-off against Leeds last month as "unacceptable."

"It's the same word (unacceptable) and in these conditions, where we are not winning football matches, even worse."

The Gunners failed to score from open play for the seventh time in eight games as Burnley held on for their first ever win over Arsenal in the Premier League to move out of the relegation zone.

<h2>- Leicester, Southampton impress</h2>

Leicester edged out Southampton for the performance of the weekend as the Foxes blew Brighton away inside 45 minutes at the King Power.

Maddison was back to his best after a series of injury problems with two brilliant finishes either side of Jamie Vardy's 12th goal of the season.

Southampton are just two points off the top and face troubled Arsenal next as goals from Che Adams, Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond wrapped up their fifth victory in the last seven games.

"I don't see any reason why we shouldn't continue what we're doing at this moment," said Southampton manager Ralph Hassenhuttl."

Bottom of the table United remain without a win this season, having lost 11 of their 12 games to leave them staring relegation in the face.

'You’re our Paul Pogba': Arsenal fan Piers Morgan gets involved in war of words with Mesut Ozil

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta believes that Tottenham Hotspurs deserve to be on the top of the Premier League table, however, it is too early to see them as real title contenders.

Jose Mourinho's Spurs are unbeaten since their sole loss that came in the season's opening weekend and have the opportunity to move 11 points clear of their north London rivals Arsenal when they meet on Sunday.

"I think it's very early in the season to see who is title contenders or not," Arteta told reporters. "But what you can say is that they (Spurs) are in the position they are because they are doing things the right way."

Arsenal, on the other hand, have been struggling this season as they sit on 14th position on the table. They have 13 points after their opening 10 matches, which is their lowest since the 1981-82 season.

"The table is like that because they deserve it more than us and they've done things better than us," Arteta said. "We have to accept that. But we want to go there and make that gap three points smaller."

London based clubs will witness the return of 2,000 fans after the city was placed under Tier 2 COVID-19 restrictions by the British government.&nbsp;

"We've been waiting for this moment for a long time and I'm not going to complain," Arteta said.

"Honestly, I'd rather play in a stadium with an atmosphere, with some fans and at this moment it's going to be for them with their supporters and the next week it will be us."

Spurs doing things 'right way' and deserve to be on top, says Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta

For the first time in 270 days, fans were back inside a Premier League ground as Arsenal welcomed 2,000 supporters into the Emirates for Thursday's routine 4-1 Europa League win over Rapid Vienna.

The sparse crowd in a 60,000 capacity stadium were well distanced between two stands and in high spirits despite the Gunners' poor form of late in the English top-flight.

"I'm delighted to have fans back they make a huge difference," said Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta.

"We had 2,000 but they were loud and they were supportive to the team so thanks to them for coming and making the effort."

Outside the ground before kick-off fans held up a banner reading: "Home at last, Thank you NHS" in tribute to those working on the front line battling coronavirus in the health service.

Arsenal's last home match with a crowd was back in March prior to a three-month stoppage of the sport due to the pandemic.&nbsp;

Since returning in June, English top-flight football has been played behind closed doors with Arsenal fans missing out on seeing their side win the FA Cup and Community Shield at Wembley.

"It's been a long nine months since the last game," said Javed Singh. "I'm excited, it's a bit of a dead rubber game but good to be back in the stadium. Just great to see a game in person."

Despite Arsenal having already booked their place in the Europa League knockout stages, demand from fans to be one of the lucky few back through the gates crashed the club website on Saturday morning.

"It's one of those games you will look back on that we were the first ones in the stadium," said Dan Anderson, who attended the game with his brother as normal.

"It's just getting back to normal. You work hard all week and to have that reward to be able to go to a game at the weekend or at night is what you want."

However, it was not a return to normality for everyone. Pubs that would typically be crammed with fans on matchday around the stadium remained shut with&nbsp;London still under tier two restrictions meaning alcohol cannot be served without food.

Restrictions remain even tighter in other parts of England in Tier three such as Manchester and Birmingham where fans remain shut out.

"Football is all about you, the fans - we have missed you and we are so happy to be welcoming you back," said Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a video played before kick-off.

<h2>- Gunnersauras saved from extinction -</h2>

Club mascot Gunnersaurus was also back after the controversy that saw the club employee, Jerry Quy, who played the role since 1993, let go amid cost-cutting measures before Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil stepped in to cover his salary.

Playing an entire season without crowds would cost Premier League clubs an estimated £700 million ($941 million) and the need to make the most of the fans' return was evident with Arsenal's "Armoury" club shop reopened.

The atmosphere inspired a much-changed side on the field as Arteta looked ahead of Sunday's North London derby against Premier League leaders Tottenham.

Spurs were the target of the first chants once the action got underway, showing some things never change no matter the circumstances.

There was soon something to cheer as Alexandre Lacazette smashed in a stunning long-range strike top open the scoring on 10 minutes and ran to celebrate in front of the fans.

"It's just great to have that sound back and have our 12th man back," said Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Pablo Mari quickly headed home a second on his first appearance since March.

Eddie Nketiah added a third before half-time before Kohya Kitagawa's consolation for the Austrians drew pantomime boos from the crowd.

Substitute Emile Smith Rowe rounded off the scoring on a night that will be best remembered for what happened off the field.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta feels that the Gunners will face many difficulties during the January transfer season and might not much room, in fact, they may have to offload players before they can add to the first-team squad.

'It’s pretty difficult': Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta talks about January transfer market

Arsenal have a long way to go before they can be considered title contenders and need at least a few more transfer windows to develop a squad capable of bridging the gap with the elite Premier League clubs, manager Mikel Arteta has said.

Arsenal last won the Premier League in 2003-04 under Arsene Wenger and have failed to make the top four since 2015-16. The north London club finished eighth last season - their worst result in England's top-flight since 1994-95 - 43 points behind champions Liverpool.

Arteta has tasted some success since his appointment in December last year, winning the FA Cup, but the Spaniard is aware of the challenges he faces to restore the club to the top of the English game and win the title.

"It will take a few windows at least to do that. To establish yourself to compete at the level of certain clubs in this league, which is nearly 100 points, it takes time," Arteta told Sky Sports.

"In football, time is very precious and people are very impatient. If you don't respect the process and you ask certain people to do certain things when the foundations are not there, it's a really dangerous thing to do.

"We have to prepare for difficult moments. We knew that right from the start because it's not something that has happened in the last year - it has happened many years in the past."

Arsenal are 12th in the league this season with 13 points from nine matches ahead of Sunday's visit by ninth-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Arsenal a few transfer windows away from mounting title challenge - Arteta

Liverpool shrugged off an injury crisis to move level on points with Tottenham at the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Leicester, while 10-man Arsenal were left to cling on for a 0-0 draw at Leeds by Nicolas Pepe's red card on Sunday.

The champions were without the injured Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, while top scorer Mohamed Salah was absent due to a positive coronavirus test.

Yet, Jurgen Klopp's men were still imperious in easing past a Leicester side that had started the weekend on top of the table.

The Foxes did not do themselves any favours when Jonny Evans turned James Milner's corner into his own net to reward Liverpool's bright start.

Diogo Jota then became the first ever Liverpool player to score in his first four home league games with a downward header from Andy Robertson's cross.

Only a combination of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and the woodwork kept Liverpool from a repeat of the 4-0 thrashing they dished out to Leicester when the sides last met in December.

But Robert Firmino then rounded off a fine night for the champions with a towering header from another Milner corner six minutes from time.

"Playing them like that tonight, I do not take for granted," said Klopp. "The boys were on fire."

Liverpool have now set a new club record of 64 unbeaten league games at Anfield.

<h2>- Pepe lets Arsenal down -</h2>

Leicester's defeat means Arsenal are just five points off the top four, but Mikel Arteta was furious at Pepe's lack of discipline as the Gunners were lucky to escape with a point at Elland Road.

"It's unacceptable," said the Spaniard, whose side have won just one of their last five league games.&nbsp;

"With 10 men it is a big disadvantage. I really liked the personality of the team when Pepe let the team down, how we stuck to our jobs. Obviously it makes it really difficult."

Leeds are 14th after their third consecutive match without a win, but Marcelo Bielsa's men were left cursing their luck as Rodrigo, Patrick Bamford and Raphinha all hit the woodwork in the closing stages.

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had been given a rare chance in the central striker's role, but he was starved of service even before Pepe's dismissal.

Aubameyang's penalty in a 1-0 win at Manchester United last month is the only league goal Arsenal have now scored for nearly 500 minutes.

<h2>- Everton bounce back -</h2>

Everton recovered from three straight defeats to beat Fulham 3-2 thanks to a double from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The England international moved to the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts with Abdoulaye Doucoure also on target for Carlo Ancelotti's men before half-time.

Bobby Decordova-Reid had equalised at 1-1 for Fulham, but their woes from the penalty spot continued as a third different player this season missed from the spot when Ivan Cavaleiro scooped his effort over the bar.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek reduced the deficit 20 minutes from time, but Everton held on to win for the first time in five league games to move up to sixth.

"The most important part of the game was to be back to winning," Ancelotti said.

"We lost energy in the second half, the players were tired. I changed to put more fresh legs on the pitch but we had to defend. In the end it went well."

Fulham remain one place above the relegation zone after their third defeat in four games.

Bottom of the table Sheffield United's wait for their first win this season goes on after they were beaten 1-0 by West Ham at Bramall Lane.

Sebastien Haller scored the winner in the 56th minute with a fierce shot that flashed into the roof of the net to move the Hammers up to eighth.

While Ceballos took to Twitter and call the report 'fake', Arteta said the incident had been resolved. However, the Spanish coach is concerned about the leak. "I don't like the fact that that incident comes out at all," Arteta told reporters ahead of Sunday's Premier League match at Leeds United. "I will find out where it is coming from and if that is the case, that goes completely against what I expect from each other, the privacy and the confidentiality that we need. There will be consequences. "It's a contact sport... Training is very competitive and issues happen a lot of the time." Ceballos, who is on loan from Real Madrid, has been involved in a scuffle with a Gunner in the past. He has been involved in an altercation with Eddie Nketiah during a warm-up session ahead of a match against Fulham in September. However, the two made up and were all smiles when Ceballos posted an image with the 21-year-old striker after the match with the caption: "No problems here my brother." (Inputs from Reuters)

Leaked reports of Arsenal's training ground bust-up leaves Mikel Arteta furious

Arsenal forward Nicolas Pepe has admitted that he is unhappy with his lack of playing time under manager Mikel Arteta. The 25-year-old is Arsenal’s record signing at £72m and has been impressive in the cup competitions this season. However, he has only started one match in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a>.&nbsp;

"My goal is to play more. To have a little more playing time," Pepe told French channel Canal Plus.

"A player who plays is happy. For me, I would like to play a little more to find a smile again.

Pepe continues to be a regular in Arsenal’s cup matches but it looks like Arsenal boss Arteta prefers the likes of Willian ahead of Pepe when it comes to the Premier League. Pepe admitted to being frustrated to see his name among the substitutes every weekend.

"He (Arteta) wants me to be 100 per cent focused during the 90 minutes of the match. Afterward, I see during training that I will be a substitute the following weekend.

Meanwhile, Arteta has used Aubameyang at the left-wing, a move that has its fair share of critics. Aubameyang has netted just twice in the Premier League while failing to register a shot on target in Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat by Aston Villa on Sunday. So far, the Gabon international has registered just 10 shots on target in eight games.

The 32-year-old, who recently signed a contract extension with Arsenal, has been moved to left-wing under Arteta with more focus on defensive duties. While Arsenal have looked solid in that regard, Aubameyang has witnessed a drop in goals and shots per game.

Premier League: Arsenal register an away win against Manchester United

The Manchester United troika Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood combined for 62 goals in all competition last season with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer powering their attack by signing Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani during the transfer window.

Manchester United forwards can be real threat this season: Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta admitted he has failed to get the best out of Mesut Ozil after the German expressed his anger at being left out the Gunners' Premier League squad.

The 32-year-old is the highest-paid player in Arsenal's history on a reported £350,000 ($450,000) a week, but has also been omitted from the Arsenal's Europa League squad, casting doubt he will ever play for the club again.

Ozil has not played a single minute for Arteta's side since March 7 and is out of contract at the end of the season.

"My job is to get the best out of every player, to contribute to the team performance. Here I feel at the moment, today, that I have failed," Arteta said at a pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday's Europa League trip to Rapid Vienna.

"I want the best possible Mesut for the team. In some moments I was able to get close to that, and at the moment I have not been able to do it because I have to make the decision to leave him out of the squad."

Earlier on Wednesday, Ozil expressed his frustration at being sidelined and suggested he had not been treated fairly.

"Upon signing my new contract in 2018, I pledged my loyalty and allegiance to the club that I love, Arsenal, and it saddens me that this has not been reciprocated," said Ozil in a statement posted on social media.

"I can promise you that this hard decision won't change anything in my mindset - I will continue to train as best as I can and wherever possible use my voice against inhumanity and for justice."

Last December Arsenal distanced themselves from comments Ozil made criticising China's treatment of the Uighur population in Xinjiang.

The World Cup winner also refused to take a 12.5 percent pay cut in line with the rest of the Arsenal squad when the economic crisis caused by coronavirus hit in April.

However, Arteta insisted that his decision was purely a football one.

"My conscience is very calm because I have been really fair with him. My level of communication with him has been really high and we know what to expect with each other," added Arteta.

"Obviously a player of that dimension, with the career he has had, everything that happens around him has a big impact.

"It has been the case for the last eight years, it is nothing new that is just happening now. A lot of things have happened over these eight years."

Earlier this month, Ozil offered to pay the salary of Arsenal's popular mascot Gunnersaurus after Jerry Quy, who has played the role of the dinosaur since 1993, was let go by the club with stadiums empty during the Covid-19 crisis.

In some moments I was able to get close to that, and at the moment I have not been able to do it because I have to make the decision to leave him out of the squad." Earlier on Wednesday, Ozil expressed his frustration at being sidelined and suggested he had not been treated fairly. "Upon signing my new contract in 2018, I pledged my loyalty and allegiance to the club that I love, Arsenal, and it saddens me that this has not been reciprocated," said Ozil in a statement posted on social media. "I can promise you that this hard decision won't change anything in my mindset - I will continue to train as best as I can and wherever possible use my voice against inhumanity and for justice." Last December Arsenal distanced themselves from comments Ozil made criticising China's treatment of the Uighur population in Xinjiang. A lot of things have happened over these eight years." Earlier this month, Ozil offered to pay the salary of Arsenal's popular mascot Gunnersaurus after Jerry Quy, who has played the role of the dinosaur since 1993, was let go by the club with stadiums empty during the Covid-19 crisis.

Arteta feels he has 'failed' Arsenal over Ozil omission

Midfielder Mesut Ozil has not only been left out of Arsenal’s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League 2020-21</a> squad but also from their Europa League plans for the season. The German international on Wednesday reacted to the glaring omission as he took to social media platforms to post a lengthy tweet accusing Arsenal of showing lack of loyalty.&nbsp;

Ozil, who is the highest-paid player in Arsenal’s history, might have played his last match in Arsenal colors as he has been excluded from the Premier League and Europa League squad but vowed to keep “fighting” for his chance.

Ozil was a regular face in Arsenal playing XI under Mikel Arteta before the last season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has failed to feature in the squad since then.

Going by Ozil’s statement where he wrote - “I will continue to train as best as I can and wherever possible use my voice against inhumanity and for justice” – it can be said that he is being dropped due his statement on China’s policy towards its Uighur Muslim minority. Since then, China had pulled Arsenal’s Premier League matches while removing his name and character from video games. Arsenal too had distanced themselves from Ozil’s statement on Uighur Muslims.

<h2>Mesut Ozil’s full statement:</h2>

This is a difficult message to write to the @Arsenal fans that I’ve played for over the past few years. I’m really deeply disappointed by the fact that I have not been registered for the @premierleague season for the time being. Upon signing my new contract in 2018, I pledged my loyalty and allegiance to the club that I love, Arsenal, and it saddens me that this has not been reciprocated. As I have just found out, loyalty is hard to come by nowadays. I've always tried to remain positive from week to week that there's maybe a chance to get back in the squad soon again. That's why I kept silent so far. Before the Coronavirus break I was really happy with the development under our new coach Mikel Arteta - we've been on a positive way and I would say my performances were on a really good level.

But then things changed, again, and I was not longer allowed to play football for Arsenal. What else can I say? London still feels like home, I still have many good friends in this team, and I still feel a strong connection with the fans of this club. No matter what, I will keep fighting for my chance and not let my 8th season at Arsenal end like this. I can promise you that this hard decision won't change anything in my mindset - I will continue to train as best as I can and wherever possible use my voice against inhumanity and for justice.
