According to British media, Jerry Quy, who has played the role of the dinosaur mascot since 1993, had been let go, with stadiums empty during the coronavirus crisis.

The fans are upset with the club's decision and a GoFundMe page for Quy has been set up to raise funds.

A statement on the page read: "Gunnersaurus has been the Arsenal club mascot for 27 years. He's a club icon, and we cannot let him become extinct.

"Played by lifelong fan Jerry Quy, it would be a terrible shame to lose him. The mascot league is the only one we've consistently been on top of, let's keep our all-time top scorer on top."

#Savegunnersaurus: Arsenal receives widespread condemnation after releasing its long-time mascot

Manchester United and Chelsea need a swift response to their title credentials being damaged by home defeats last weekend, while one or both of Liverpool and Arsenal's perfect records will come to an end when they face off at Anfield on Monday night.

Crystal Palace and Everton also have the chance to claim top spot when they meet at Selhurst Park on Saturday, while the other side with maximum points from the opening two weekends, Leicester, face a daunting trip to Manchester City.

Gareth Bale will not be fit to feature to Tottenham when they host Newcastle on Sunday, but Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are enough for the Magpies to fear after the England captain set up the South Korean to score four at Southampton.

Chelsea travel to bottom-of-the-table West Brom, who are still seeking their first point back in the top-flight.

AFP Sport looks at some of the main talking points ahead of this weekend's action.

<h2>Mayday for Man Utd?</h2>

Optimism that United could return to challenging for the title after a 14-game unbeaten run to end last season was washed away with that unbeaten record as Palace were good value for their 3-1 win at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men looked desperately short of match sharpness having had barely two weeks of pre-season training.

A month-long off season was also disruptive off the field with captain Harry Maguire being handed a suspended prison term in Greece, which he is appealing, and teenage striker Mason Greenwood being sent home by England for breaching coronavirus protocols when on international duty.

There is also outcry among the United fanbase at a lack of signings in the transfer market, while their rivals still spend freely despite the economic affects of the pandemic.

The Red Devils desperately need three points at Brighton on Saturday to bring some calm, but the Seagulls have shown enough in their opening two games to suggest United face a far tougher test than when they won 3-0 on the south coast in June.

Brighton were the better side for long spells despite losing 3-1 to Chelsea on the opening weekend and bounced back with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Newcastle.

United did manage to get past Championship side Luton in the League Cup on Tuesday despite Solskjaer making 10 changes, but the Norwegian needed to bring on Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Greenwood in the latter stages to kill the tie off with Rashford and Greenwood getting on the scoresheet.

"We need to get competitive games and minutes into the legs of our players because normally we're in a pre-season after such a short training (period)," said Solskjaer.

"It's great for them to get minutes as well but also goals."

<h2>More motivated Everton shine</h2>

Everton's investment in the transfer market is reaping immediate rewards as they have won their opening two league games of the season for the first time in seven years.

Carlo Ancelotti has been able to recruit Champions League-winning quality in James Rodriguez, alongside Brazilian international Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure in midfield.

"The players have come back with more ambition and motivation," said Ancelotti after finishing 12th last season. "The new signings have helped us be more motivated."

Palace will provide an early test of how far Ancelotti's men can go this season as they have picked off Southampton and United at ease on the counter-attack with Wilfried Zaha rediscovering his best form to score three times in two games.

<h2>Third time lucky for Liverpool?</h2>

Arsenal have got the better of Liverpool twice in recent months, but the acid test for Mikel Arteta's side comes at what he described as the "toughest place to go in the world", Anfield, on Monday.

The Gunners rode their luck to beat the Reds after Jurgen Klopp's men had sealed the title last season, but the Community Shield clash between the two a month ago was a far more balanced game, which Arsenal won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Arsenal have built on their momentum from winning the FA Cup by beating Fulham and West Ham to strengthen the conviction that Arteta can lead them back into the top four this season.

But Liverpool showed in sweeping aside Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge last weekend that they remain the team to beat and have only strengthened with the signing of Thiago Alcantara.

Star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signs new Arsenal contract

Mikel Arteta expects Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to finally commit his future to Arsenal in the next few days after the Gabon forward's superb strike capped Saturday's 3-0 win at Fulham.

Arteta's side kicked off the new Premier League season with the kind of confident display that has become their hallmark since Arteta took charge.

Arsenal's free-flowing attack was too incisive for promoted Fulham and Alexandre Lacazette gave the visitors an early lead at Craven Cottage.&nbsp;

Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes scored Arsenal's second after the break in his first appearance since his close-season move from Lille.

Aubameyang added the final flourish with a typically eye-catching strike that emphasised why Arsenal are so desperate for the club captain to sign an extension to the contract which expires at the end of the season.

Gunners boss Arteta had good news for fans concerned Aubameyang might leave as he revealed their team's talisman is set to sign the contract offer.&nbsp;

"I'm really positive we are going to get it done very soon and hopefully in the next few days you will get some news," Arteta told BT Sport.

With former Chelsea winger Willian providing a pair of assists on his debut, it was the ideal way for Arsenal to start a season that appears full of promise after last season's FA Cup triumph.

Although their eighth-placed finish in the Premier League ranked as Arsenal's lowest final position since 1995, Arteta had little to do with that after taking charge in December following the dismal reign of Unai Emery.

The former Manchester City assistant coach has been a much-needed breath of fresh air for Arsenal and pushing for a place in the top four should not be beyond his revitalised team this term.

"I wanted to see my team determined to come to this difficult ground against a really good team that has been promoted. We had a lot of energy and did the things we trained on in this period," Arteta said.

"Gabriel didn't play for six months before today. Mohamed Elneny was brilliant. He has been excellent in training. All the boys tried really hard."

While the continued absence of fans due to the coronavirus and shorter than usual break has taken a little anticipation away from the new campaign, Arsenal were keener than most to get back in action after beating Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

The Gunners had underlined their rapid improvement by defeating Premier League champions Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield last month and Fulham were no match for them.

The only dark cloud for Arteta was a pre-match spat between Dani Ceballos and Eddie Nketiah.

The pair had to be separated by Arsenal team-mates after Nketiah reacted to an aggressive challenge from Ceballos while a group of players were exchanging passes in the warm-up.

Arteta's worries were eased when Lacazette netted in the ninth minute.

Granit Xhaka's strike forced a miscued clearance from Tim Ream and Willian pounced with a close-range shot that Fulham keeper Marek Rodak could only push out to Lacazette, who slotted home from virtually on the goalline.

Willian was denied a debut goal when his low free-kick cannoned off the base of the post.

Gabriel was enjoying a composed debut and the 22-year-old showed he can be a goal threat as well when he doubled Arsenal's lead in the 49th minute.

Willian swung over the corner and Gabriel showed his desire as he rose above Michael Hector for an attempted header that hit his shoulder as it flashed into the net.

Fulham's defence was crumbling like the recently demolished Craven Cottage stand and Aubameyang finished them off in the 57th minute with a carbon copy of his Community Shield goal against Liverpool.

Just as at Wembley, Willian's superb cross-field pass picked out Aubameyang and he was allowed to advance unchecked into the area before bending a fine finish into the far corner.

Rampant Arsenal crush Fulham as Premier League returns

The Premier League is just around the corner when the FA Community Shield rolls around. On the very first day, Arsenal take on Liverpool at Wembley Stadium for the trophy two weeks ahead of the Premier League's return.

Serbia has bought a new generation of medium-range, radar-guided surface-to-air&nbsp;missiles from China in a new sign of deepening cooperation between Beijing and Belgrade.

The&nbsp;purchase&nbsp;of the FK-3&nbsp;missile&nbsp;defence&nbsp;system&nbsp;was included in state-run arms company Jugoimport SDPR's annual report, submitted to the state Business Registers Agency last week and seen by Reuters.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reckons that star forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at the club could be influenced by Saturday’s outcome in the FA Cup final against London-rivals Chelsea with the Gunners desperately trying to keep hold of the Gabon international.&nbsp;

Aubameyang has just one year left on his current contract and if he cannot be convinced about a new deal then the Gunners would have to sell the 31-year-old to get the maximum out of the deal.

Aubameyang is one of Europe’s deadliest striker in over the last six seasons with two major trophies under his belt at St Etienne and Borussia Dortmund. Arteta, who have captained Arsenal to two FA Cup wins, firmly feels winning the final against Chelsea would convince Aubameyang to trust club’s pathway.&nbsp;

"No, I don't have that feeling," said Arteta on Friday when asked if Saturday's clash could be Aubameyang's final game for the club.

"It's a package at the end. You need to have a lot of ingredients on the table to persuade a player of his level to be at this football club.

"Don't forget that he still has a contract here with us. We want to do it in a long-term, at the moment he's with us and he should be really proud of where he is.

"Winning a trophy helps to really believe and feel 'wow', I want more of these moments. If you are wearing the armband and able to lift that cup, it is such a moment. This is going to help for sure."

A win against Chelsea would also make sure that Arsenal don’t miss out on European football for the first time since 1995/96 as a victory would give them automatic qualification to Europa League 2020-21.&nbsp;

Mikel Arteta hopes FA Cup win convinces Aubameyang to stay at Arsenal

Dean Smith urged Aston Villa to finish the job after they climbed out of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> relegation zone as Trezeguet clinched a priceless 1-0 win against Arsenal on Tuesday.

Smith's side have their survival fate in their own hands after the Egypt winger's first-half strike at Villa Park.

Watford's 4-0 thrashing against Manchester City earlier on Tuesday had opened the door for Villa to escape the bottom three.

And Villa seized their chance with a first home Premier League win over Arsenal in 18 attempts dating back to 1998.

Villa are now fourth bottom and have moved ahead of third-bottom Watford on goal difference, with Smith's men on -26 compared to the Hornets' -27.

They head to&nbsp;West Ham for their final game of the season on Sunday, while Watford visit Arsenal and second-bottom Bournemouth, three points from safety, travel to Everton.

There are a multitude of permutations that could decide relegation, but Villa will be safe if they can better Watford's result on what is certain to be a dramatic finale.

If Villa and Watford both win, goal difference or goals scored will decide who goes down.

"It is a big boost, that's for sure. We knew we had to get that win to catch Watford and now we have got the season in our own hands," Smith said.

"That's all you can ask going into the last game. It was a great performance and an even better result against a good team who just beat two of the best teams in Europe.

"We have taken the season to the last day. Watford can go and win at Arsenal so we have to make sure we win at West Ham."

Having secured an FA Cup final place by beating Manchester City on Saturday, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta made six changes and Arsenal looked a shadow of the team who impressed at Wembley.

"Emotionally and physically it's been a very demanding week but I saw a team who wanted to fight until the end," Arteta insisted.

Arsenal cannot finish higher than eighth and must win the FA Cup final against Chelsea to qualify for next season's Europa League.&nbsp;

For all the positive signs since Arteta took charge in December, Arsenal will suffer their worst Premier League finish since 1995.

"It tells you the gap doesn't lie. We have to make that smaller and smaller," Arteta said.

"I know where we are in certain areas and where we need to improve. We will get that."

<h2>- Arteta plea -</h2>

&nbsp;

A plane trailing a banner reading "Back Arteta Kroenke Out" was flown over Villa Park during the match, but Arteta pleaded with Arsenal fans to trust he has the support of the US-based owner.

"The Kroenkes and the board and the sporting director, I have their full backing. I have that 100 percent. The fans have to believe what I'm saying," Arteta added.

Arsenal's long-standing weakness at set-pieces reared its head again as Villa snatched the lead in the 27th minute.

Tyrone Mings glanced Conor Hourihane's corner across the six-yard box and Trezeguet was left unmarked to blast a fierce strike past Arsenal keeper Emiliano Martinez.

Trezeguet has been Villa's savour as the stakes have got higher and his vital goal followed his brace in the victory against Crystal Palace nine days earlier.

Jack Grealish, strongly linked with a close-season move, was captaining Villa in what could have been his last home game with the club he supported as a boy.

Asked after the match about his future, Grealish said: "I'm not too sure at the moment. I have one aim and that's to keep Villa in the Premier League. That's all I'm thinking about."

Arsenal were better in the second half but Bukayo Saka blazed over from a good position 12 yards out.

With the tension mounting, Villa rode their luck when Eddie Nketiah's glancing header hit the post and bounced back into Pepe Reina's hands.

Villa out of relegation zone as Trezeguet sinks Arsenal

Arsenal ambushed FA Cup holders Manchester City as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a goal in each half to secure a 2-0 semi-final victory at an empty Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Days after Mikel Arteta's side beat Premier League champions Liverpool, the Spaniard outfoxed his managerial mentor Pep Guardiola as his players executed his plan to perfection.

Predictably, City enjoyed the majority of possession, but Arsenal were gritty and disciplined as well as being lethal on the counter-attack as they reached their 21st FA Cup final.

Standing in the way of Arsenal's 14th FA Cup triumph and a trophy for Arteta in his first season as a manager will be either Chelsea or Manchester United who play on Sunday.

City dominated the early exchanges, pinning Arsenal back, but were stopped in their tracks when Aubameyang produced a neat finish in the 19th minute following a flowing end-to-end move.

Pep Guardiola's City side never fully recovered and, just when they were beginning to exert some real pressure after the break, Aubameyang produced another sublime finish, racing through to fire past goalkeeper Ederson in the 71st minute.

Arsenal comfortably soaked up City's late pressure as they ended a miserable run of seven successive defeats against Guardiola's City, including a 3-0 away league defeat last month.

"It was a great result against one of the best teams in the world. We were humble, we understood the way we had to play and we took the opportunities to score," Arsenal defender David Luiz, who has been transformed in recent weeks, said.

When City had 83% of possession in the first 10 minutes it looked like being a long evening for Arsenal in the rather surreal surroundings of an empty 90,000-seater stadium.

There was no panic though and their Gabon international Aubameyang had already wasted one chance after being set up by the excellent Luiz when he gave Arsenal the lead.

It was a goal that could have come straight from the Guardiola textbook. An 18-pass move that started in Arsenal's own area, ended with Aubameyang conjuring a clever finish to guide Nicolas Pepe's cross in off the post.

City were clearly shaken out of their stride and looked frail at the back as Arseanl threatened on the counter-attack.

Guardiola's side began the second half with greater purpose and looked to be taking control with Raheem Sterling firing over and Riyad Mahrez denied by a great save from Emiliano Martinez.

Kevin de Bruyne's dipping free kick went close for City but Arsenal held firm and struck again with 20 minutes left.

Kieran Tierney's sublime pass from the left played in Aubameyang and the striker outpaced defender Eric Garcia before coolly shooting under Ederson to wrap up the victory.

Aubameyang double fires Arsenal past Manchester City into Cup final

West Ham rocked Chelsea's top-four hopes and boosted their survival bid with a dramatic 3-2 win, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck twice as Arsenal climbed back into European contention with a 4-0 thrashing of Norwich on Wednesday.

Chelsea were hoping to take advantage of third-placed Leicester's 2-1 defeat at Everton earlier in the day, but instead the Blues were beaten for the first time since the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> restart.

West Ham were denied the opening goal at the London Stadium when VAR ruled Michail Antonio was offside as he lay on the ground while Tomas Soucek slotted home.

Willian fired Chelsea ahead from the penalty spot five minutes before half-time after Issa Diop tripped Christian Pulisic.

Soucek headed home in first-half stoppage time as West Ham finally scored their first goal since the restart.

Antonio put West Ham in front in the 51st minute when he slid in to convert Jarrod Bowen's cross.

Willian's superb 70th-minute free-kick drew Chelsea level, but it was West Ham who broke away to win it in the 89th minute when substitute Andriy Yarmolenko finished a brilliant counter attack.

Chelsea are one point behind Leicester and only two ahead of Manchester United and Wolves as the race to qualify for the Champions League hots up with six games left.

"It's the story of our season. It's been a good season but there have been so many of these moments," Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said.

"I'm not happy with any of the goals. There were details in the game which we knew but we lost because we didn't get them right.

"It's why we are fighting for the top four and not first or second. We don't get things right as much as the big boys do."

West Ham's crucial first win since the restart moved them three points clear of the relegation zone.

At the Emirates Stadium, Aubameyang moved alongside Jamie Vardy as the Premier League's top scorer on 19 goals on a night of contrasting fortunes for the Golden Boot contenders.

Arsenal registered a third straight win to move up to seventh against a Norwich side ever more resigned to relegation.

Canaries keeper Tim Krul did his side no favours by gifting the opener to Aubameyang when he was caught trying to dribble past the Gabon international.

Aubameyang's first saw him reach 50 Premier League goals in 79 appearances -- making him the fastest Arsenal player to reach that landmark.

"A player that is able to score as many goals as he has done in that short space of time tells you everything about the importance that he has for us," said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

Aubameyang turned provider for Granit Xhaka to make it 2-0 before half-time and was then handed another gift when Norwich striker Josip Drmic teed him up to make it 3-0.

Cedric Soares, signed from Southampton in January, made his debut one to remember with a long-range strike nine minutes from time to round off the scoring.

<h2>- Leicester lose more ground -</h2>

Leicester are headed in the opposite direction as their winless run since English football's restart from the coronavirus pandemic stretched to four games.

Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson's penalty gave Everton the perfect start at Goodison Park.

Kelechi Iheanacho's fortunate goal as the ball ricocheted in off his face reduced Leicester's arrears and they pressed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages.

"Our form hasn't been the best for a period now but we still have it in our hands to achieve what would be a dream for us, getting into the top four," said Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers.

At the bottom of the table, Bournemouth also suffered a huge blow in their battle to beat the drop with a humiliating 4-1 home defeat by Newcastle.

Dwight Gayle, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almiron and Valentino Lazaro were on target for the Magpies.

Bournemouth remain in the bottom three and the margin of defeat could also prove costly as they drop below Aston Villa on goal difference into 19th.

Arsenal's first team and coach accept 'voluntary' pay-cuts

The entire footballing world was left shocked when Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was tested positive for COVID-19. Since contracting the deadly virus, Arteta has made a complete recovery while admitting there were times when he feared the worst circumstances.

Arteta contracting COVID-19 pushed English FA in postponing the Premier League for a few matches before suspending the entire league until further notice in the wake of the pandemic. Opening up on his time in self-isolation, Arteta said he felt something inside him when Arsenal made them know that the players and staff may have gotten exposed to the virus because of Olympiacos’ owner.

"I am feeling completely recovered [now]," the Spaniard said. "It’s true I started having some symptoms when we got the phone call from the club to let us know that we might be exposed to the virus because of the owner of Olympiacos and in that moment…I don’t know, I felt something within me, that I had it,” Arteta told the club’s website.&nbsp;

Arteta’s next match was supposed to be against Manchester City, where he was Pep Guardiola’s assistant a few months back. But since showing symptoms, Arteta decided not to take any risk and isolate himself from the rest. The match was eventually postponed.

"We had a game the following day against Manchester City, so I made a decision and called the doctor straight away and I asked him to drive home. I spoke with Raul, Edu, Vinai, Huss and we set up a meeting together and I said, ‘Listen, we have a couple of players that have been exposed. So we cannot make that decision, we have to speak to the Premier League&nbsp;to Manchester City and we have to make the decision pretty quickly.'

"Then you realise, 'Wow, everybody can be exposed here, this is very serious' and you start to think about the people that you've been in contact with and the other people that can be related to us. That's when a bit of fear comes,” Arteta said.&nbsp;

Arteta further gave an insight of the symptoms, initial stages with fever and dry cough along with chest discomfort as he said he was more worried about his wife and kids while adding everyone is fine now and that is a big relief.&nbsp;

Saka gave Arsenal an early lead as the 18-year-old full-back bagged his third goal of the season with a superb strike.

Nketiah got the second before the interval to ensure Arteta took another step towards emulating his FA Cups triumph as an Arsenal player in 2014 and 2015.

Sam Surridge got one back for Bournemouth in the closing minutes, but it was too late to salvage a replay.

"I'm very pleased. Always tough to come here and win, we've done it with a young team as well," Arteta said.

It was Arsenal's third win in eight matches under Arteta in all competitions, with just one defeat in that run.

It was not all plain sailing by the seaside for Arteta, who added: "We scored two fantastic goals, but after that, we became a little bit sloppy and I didn't like that very much."

Arteta's first match in charge of Arsenal was a 1-1&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;draw at Bournemouth in December, but his team looked far more accomplished this time, even without several key players.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang still suspended, 18-year-old striker Gabriel Martinelli started for Arsenal.

Martinelli had scored in Arsenal's last two&nbsp;Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;games to reach 10 goals for the season.

But the Brazilian isn't just a poacher and he showed his creative vision as Arsenal made a perfect start in the fifth minute.

As a 22-pass Arsenal move approached an eye-catching crescendo, Willock's surge opened up the Bournemouth defence.

Willock picked out Martinelli, who deftly moved the ball onto Saka when a more selfish player would have shot and he smashed a thunderous drive into the roof of the net from an acute angle.

Arteta had made five changes from the Chelsea match, with Nketiah making his first Arsenal start since January last year against Blackpool in the FA Cup.

Nketiah was recently recalled from a loan spell at second-tier Leeds over concerns he wasn't playing enough, but the 20-year-old showed his potential in the 26th minute as he doubled Arsenal's lead.

Unable to contain Willock and Saka, Bournemouth were carved open as the midfielder's pass found the defender in acres of space on the left.

Saka's cross into the six-yard box was perfect for Nketiah and he slotted in his first Arsenal goal since May.

Completely outclassed for the first 30 minutes, Bournemouth finally had a sight of goal when Harry Wilson's volley was saved by Emiliano Martinez.

Arteta's men didn't have it all their own way in the second half and Martinez took out his own player when he clattered into Shkodran Mustafi in a bid to catch a cross.

Mustafi had to be stretchered off as a result of the clash and Arteta said: "We'll have to assess tomorrow but when Mustafi has to come off normally it is not a good sign."

The hapless Martinez nearly gifted Bournemouth a goal moments later when he missed with his attempt to punch clear, but Jack Simpson headed just wide of the empty net.

Surridge punished sloppy defending to tap in from Simon Francis' cross deep into stoppage time, but Arsenal's rookies held on.

Sam Surridge got one back for Bournemouth in the closing minutes, but it was too late to salvage a replay. "I'm very pleased. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-dominate-manchester-united-in-first-win-for-arteta-271539">Arsenal</a>'s Reiss Nelson scored early in the second half to secure a 1-0 win over battling Championship leaders Leeds United in the FA Cup third round at The Emirates stadium on Monday.

Nelson put a near full-strength home side ahead in the 55th minute, scrappily side-footing the ball into the net after the Leeds defence was caught out by an <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-im-really-disappointed-with-the-result-arteta-270937">Alexandre Lacazette</a> cross.

Arsenal, who have won the world's oldest cup competition a record 13 times -&nbsp;but lost to Leeds in the 1972 final - visit fellow Premier League side Bournemouth in the fourth round.

Leeds had taken the game to Arsenal straight from the whistle, pushing forward and blasting 11 shots on goal to the hosts' one in the first 25 minutes alone.

They dominated possession and striker Patrick Bamford was unlucky not to score after 15 minutes when he collected the ball from Jack Harrison but curled his close-range shot onto the bar.

Arsenal by contrast looked a shadow of the side who beat <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/fa-cup-man-utd-held-by-wolves-man-city-cruise-through-272201">Manchester United</a> 2-0 in the Premier League on New Year's Day.

But Mikel Arteta's side looked a different team in the second half, with Lacazette whipping an early free-kick off the bar and David Luiz going close before Nelson struck.

"Leeds are a great team and they pressed us, we didn't expect it. We got the goal in the end and that is the most important thing," said Nelson.

"This will give us confidence to go forward."

Lacazette said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-boss-arteta-gives-playmaker-ozil-benefit-of-the-doubt-270933">Arteta</a> gave the players a firm talking to at halftime, although the manager made it sound less daunting.

"Now I'm really pleased but we saw two different teams from the first to second half. I tried to tell them exactly what they were going to face and after 32 minutes we'd won one duel," he said.

"We changed our attitude, desire and organisation at halftime and then we were completely different. It was good for my players to learn and to suffer on the pitch."

Both sides fielded second-string keepers - with Emiliano Martinez coming in for Arsenal and Illan Meslier for leeds - and the home side were missing striker <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-aubameyang-goal-earns-artetas-arsenal-draw-at-bournemouth-270498">Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang</a> due to illness, but otherwise they fielded strong lineups.

FA Cup: Arteta's gunners push through against Leeds

Arsenal earned their first win under new coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-arteta-aims-to-solve-ozil-issue-as-chelsea-clash-looms-270702">Mikel Arteta</a> by comprehensively overpowering a stale Manchester United side 2-0 in the Premier League on Wednesday with goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis.

Club record signing Pepe put Arsenal ahead in the 10th minute of their third game under their former player by lashing into the net after good work down the left flank from Sead Kolasinac.

Pepe later hit the post in a dominant first-half display from Arsenal before defender Sokratis deservedly doubled their lead in the 42nd minute by pouncing on some hesitant defending from the visitors following a corner.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-boss-arteta-gives-playmaker-ozil-benefit-of-the-doubt-270933">Arsenal</a> comfortably saw out their advantage to record a first league win in five games which took them up to 10th in the standings on 27 points after 21 games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side remain fifth on 31 points after missing out on the chance to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea, who drew 1-1 at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion earlier in the day and are five points above United.

"I think it was great. We were great in the first half and showed a maturity in the second," said Arsenal defender David Luiz.

"Mikel Arteta is a great coach, he was a great player. I think he can improve every player. Our season started very bad but things can change."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-manchester-united-up-to-fifth-with-2-0-win-at-burnley-270810">United</a> were searching for a third consecutive win but were out-fought by Arsenal and rarely looked capable of staging a revival, even after Mason Greenwood and Andreas Pereira came on and injected some energy into their attack.

UNITED 'NOT GOOD ENOUGH

"They played with high intensity, aggression and passed the ball way better than us," said United defender Harry Maguire.

"The second goal was disappointing, we are conceding far too many from set plays. We need to do the basics. And to lose the second gave us too much to do in the second half. We huffed and puffed but it wasn't good enough."

Once considered the Premier League's showpiece fixture when the clubs routinely battled for the title but, United and Arsenal now find themselves caught up in a topsy-turvy campaign.

United were without <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pogba-set-to-return-for-manchester-uniteds-trip-to-arsenal-270927">Paul Pogba</a> after the France international hurt his ankle and also missed the services of midfielder Scott McTominay.

His replacement, Nemanja Matic, was sluggish in his passing and frequently beaten by Arsenal's Lucas Torreira, although Pepe was the home side's chief creator.

The Gunners also looked far more assured in defence than they have all season and were quick to snuff out United's attackers whenever they advanced towards their area.

Arsenal earned their first win under new coach Mikel Arteta by comprehensively overpowering a stale Manchester United side 2-0 in the Premier League on Wednesday with goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis. Arsenal comfortably saw out their advantage to record a first league win in five games which took them up to 10th in the standings on 27 points after 21 games. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side remain fifth on 31 points after missing out on the chance to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea, who drew 1-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion earlier in the day and are five points above United. "I think it was great. We were great in the first half and showed a maturity in the second," said Arsenal defender David Luiz. "Mikel Arteta is a great coach, he was a great player. I think he can improve every player. Our season started very bad but things can change." United were searching for a third consecutive win but were out-fought by Arsenal and rarely looked capable of staging a revival, even after Mason Greenwood and Andreas Pereira came on and injected some energy into their attack. UNITED 'NOT GOOD ENOUGH "They played with high intensity, aggression and passed the ball way better than us," said United defender Harry Maguire. "The second goal was disappointing, we are conceding far too many from set plays. We need to do the basics. And to lose the second gave us too much to do in the second half. We huffed and puffed but it wasn't good enough." Once considered the Premier League's showpiece fixture when the clubs routinely battled for the title but, United and Arsenal now find themselves caught up in a topsy-turvy campaign. United were without Paul Pogba after the France international hurt his ankle and also missed the services of midfielder Scott McTominay. "We have started again, I think we have a lot of space to improve," added goalscorer Sokratis. "The second half we didn't play like the first but I think every game we are getting better. The fun is back."
