Apple launches new line of smartwatches: Series 8, new SE and Ultra

Apple is expected to launch a bunch of new products at its much-awaited Far Out event on Wednesday to be held at the Steve Jobs Theatre in the company's headquarters at Cupertino, California. It will begin at 10 am Pacific Time (10:30 pm in India) and will be live streamed. Not a lot of people are expected to attend the even physically, though.

Where to watch?
The event will be streamed on Apple.com, the Apple YouTube channel, as well as on the Apple TV app. If you have an iPhone, you can visit the company's website on Safari to watch the event.

Everything expected to be launched
Apple is expected to unveil iPhone14, besides the iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone Mini will likely be discontinued this year and probably be replaced by a Max or Plus model.

Three Apple Watch models might also be unveiled and named Series 8. They will likely feature a new body temperature sensor to help with fertility and sleep tracking. However, the Apple Watch Pro is expected to be its biggest launch, with a bigger screen, extra durability, and more physical controls. An updated Apple Watch SE is also on the cards.

It is also likely to introduce the second-generation AirPods Pro, along with unveiling the AirPods Pro 2 with a new design.

What else?
Apple will also talk about iOS 16, which was first announced in June and has been in testing for months. It could also announce new subscription services for Apple Music, iCloud and Apple TV+.

Pricing
The higher-end models are likely to be priced much higher than expected because of the current value of Indian Rupee. Fluctuations in currency also makes Apple keeps a price buffer in India on top of the original Dollar pricing. Starting price of the new iPhone 14 might be somewhere around Rs. 79,990.

Last year, the iPhone 13 series was priced on the same scale as iPhone 12. But this is not expected to be the case this year. However, some people are expecting that since the newer models will be manufactured in India, the costs might remain low in the country.

Demand
The demand for the iPhone 14 series is likely to remain high despite consumers not having as much cash as they did pre-pandemic. A research note by analysts at Wedbush Securities says that there will be a high demand for the iPhone 14, estimating that 240 million out of one billion iPhone users worldwide have not upgraded their phones in over three and a half years.
India may surpass Germany, Japan to become the third largest economy by 2029: Report

India is planning to speed up safety approvals for electronic devices, ranging from wireless earbuds to smartphones, to reduce the time taken to arrive in the market, Reuters reported citing an industry group.

Currently, it takes anywhere from 16 to 21 weeks to test and certify the products. Once it is approved, the time can be cut by as much as five to eight weeks.

Industry executives say India's cumbersome testing process usually takes 16 weeks for a new Apple AirPods model, for example, as the charging case and its components must first secure clearance before the earbuds are assessed.

Whereas for smartphones and their parts, the procedure could take an average of up to 21 weeks.

The move comes following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push to increase the electronics hardware manufacturing industry output to $300 billion by 2026.

The decision was taken following a meeting this week between MAIT—a key electronic hardware industry body—and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the country’s nodal agency responsible for setting quality and safety standards.

Members of MAIT comprise Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi, along with global and domestic firms operating in India's electronics, telecom and IT sector.

According to Reuters, the BIS is working on a pilot project to do away with the existing sequential testing model and deploy parallel testing for electronic devices in the South Asian market.

"For industry, it is directly linked with ease of doing business; for consumers, this will result in faster access to the latest products," MAIT said in its statement.

According to MAIT, earbuds will be the first devices likely to be put through faster testing, with the government deciding on other products later.

India planning to speed up testing, safety evaluation process for electronic devices: Report

iPhone came in 2007 with a touch screen much bigger than the ones that were on other phones at that time, it was an instant hit. But then Apple reached a point where critics argued it had lost its grip on innovation.

Tech Talk: Why is Apple struggling to innovate the iPhone?

Apple will hold its annual marquee event on September 7 where the tech giant is expected to launch the iPhone 14 lineup and its next slate of smartwatches.

The tech company will be hosting the event in-person at the Steve Jobs Theatre at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. It starts at 10 a.m. local time. It will also be live-streamed on Apple’s website, continuing its approach since the pandemic began.

There are reports that Apple might also announce new Apple Watch and AirPods models at the event. It is also reportedly developing new Mac and iPad models as well, but it will be announced at a separate event in October.

But the main attraction of the event is the highly-anticipated iPhone 14 which will be released in four models. This time, it has decided to ditch its mini version, and will start with the normal iPhone 14, and the top-tier being iPhone 14 Pro Max.

While the Pro models of iPhone 14 will be powered by the A16 Bionic chipset, the non-Pro models will be powered by A15 chipset.

Apple company's security experts are warning that everyone should update any Apple device they have immediately. WION tells you why.

WION Fineprint: Apple asks its users to update the devices urgently

Apple has urged users to install emergency software updates warning that a flaw is allowing hackers to take complete control of iPhones, iPads and Mac computers. The company said that the hackers might already be aware of it and have probably been taking advantage of the problem. Apple released two security reports about the issue on Wednesday.

"Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited," the Silicon Valley-based company said.

The vulnerable devices include iPhones 6S and later models; several models of the iPad, including the fifth generation and later, all iPad Pro models and the iPad Air 2; and Mac computers running MacOS Monterey. It also affects some iPod models.

The Guardian quoted Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security, as saying that a hacker can gain “full admin access to the device” and “execute any code as if they are you, the user." She advised activists, journalists and people of similar profile who are in the public eye to update their devices on priority.

Apple did not disclose whether it had information regarding the extent to which the issue has been exploited.

Patches were released for iPhones, iPads and Mac computers on Wednesday and Thursday running on operating systems with the vulnerability.

It is pertinent to note that Apple attempted to implement its pilot programme a year ago. The employees were expected to return to the offices in May. However, the rise in Covid cases delayed the process.

Apple has reportedly asked Taiwan-based suppliers to label their products as being produced in China, in an effort to avoid disruption from strict Chinese customs.

Tech Talk: Apple asks Taiwanese suppliers to follow China custom rules

Apple has reportedly asked Taiwan-based suppliers to label their products as being produced in China, in an effort to avoid disruption from strict Chinese customs. Molly Gambhir explains.

WION Fineprint | Explained: Apple's compromises in China

Apple is said to have asked its suppliers in Taiwan to avoid using "Made in Taiwan" labels. The tech giant apparently wants products to be labeled as made in "Chinese Taipei" or "Taiwan, China".

Gravitas: Apple toes China's line on Taiwan

Apple has reportedly asked suppliers in Taiwan to strictly enforce a long-standing rule that Taiwanese-made parts and components are labelled made either in "Taiwan, China" or "Chinese Taipei.

According to Nikkei, the company wants to avoid disruption from strict Chinese customs inspections resulting from the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan last week.

The Cupertino-based tech behemoth has asked the suppliers to treat the matter with urgency to avoid possible disruptions caused by goods and components being held for scrutiny, the report said.

The announcement comes at a time when Apple is all set to launch iPhone 14 and other new products in September.

Any item, document or carton bearing "Made in Taiwan" phrase can lead to shipments getting delayed or rejected by the Chinese customs authorities, and, in a worst-case scenario, a fine of 4,000 yuan ($592) may also be levied, Nikkei reported quoting sources.

Beijing considers Taiwan as a breakaway province that will eventually be reunited with the Chinese mainland. But Taiwan, which has a population of around 23 million, is a self-ruled island that sees itself as distinct from the mainland.
