Apple in sexual harassment row: Women allege HR department dismissed misconduct plaints

Apple Inc was sued on Monday by French app developers that accused the iPhone maker of violating US antitrust law by overcharging them to use its app store.

An expert said that Apple should revive its plans to scan iPhones for child abuse imagery. The use of the software by the company to scan the photo library of every individual who uses the iPhone was deemed controversial.

But the inventor of the scanning technology, Prof Hany Farid, has argued that Apple should take a hint from warnings issued by the security services of the United Kingdom.

While speaking to the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) on the child safety group's latest podcast, Prof Farid said that Apple should be emboldened to revive its plans after an intervention from the technical leads of GCHQ and the National Cyber Security Centre as they are backing an extension of the technology on to individual phones.

Prof Farid is an expert in image analysis at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the inventor of PhotoDNA, which is an "image hashing" technique. It is generally used by companies across the web to remove illegal images after identifying them.

During the latest podcast, Farid said, "The pushback was from a relatively small number of privacy groups. I contend that the vast majority of people would have said 'sure, this seems perfectly reasonable', but yet a relatively small but vocal group put a huge amount of pressure on Apple and I think Apple, somewhat cowardly, succumbed to that pressure."

He added, "I think they should have stuck their ground and said: 'This is the right thing to do and we are going to do it.' And I am a strong advocate of not just Apple doing this, but Snap doing this, and Google doing this – all the online services doing this."

Should Apple scan iPhones for child abuse images? Here's what expert has to say

Apple reported fiscal third-quarter earnings on Thursday that beat Wall Street expectations for sales and profit but showed slowing growth for the iPhone maker. Apple stock rose over 3% in extended trading.

iPhone sales rise by 3% in 3rd quarter despite glum economy

While global economies fear a recession is looming around the corner, the big tech companies are having a glorious day. Reportedly, both Amazon and Apple have posted more than impressive sales numbers against the backdrop of a slowdown.

Amazon's sales figure reached $121 billion in the quarter while its cloud-computing platform Amazon Web Services managed to rake in $5.7 billion in revenue, registering a 33 per cent growth.

The numbers are particularly impressive for the Jeff Bezos company as online sales shrank by 4 per cent, declining for the second quarter in a row.

Apple's revenue up by two per cent

Meanwhile, Apple announced that its June quarter revenue stood at a record $83 billion, up two per cent YoY. Apple is expected to pay a dividend of $0.3 per share to its shareholders.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was quoted as saying after the release of quarterly results, “This quarter’s record results speak of Apple’s constant efforts to innovate, to advance new possibilities, and to enrich the lives of our customers."

Apple had good news coming from India as the company doubled its revenue in the June quarter. Along with iPhone, it was the iPad that was doing surprisingly well in the Asian country.

US economy falters for a successive quarter

While the two tech companies based in the US are making profits, the country, on the other hand, posted a successive quarter where the economy contracted.

As reported extensively by WION, USA's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) fell at a 0.9 per cent annual rate after a 1.6 per cent decline in Q1. The report further highlighted that there was a decrease in government spending and residential investment.

iPhone users have been yearning for more customised options for years, but have been unsatisfied until Apple released iOS 15 last year, which included widgets and the ability to alter icons. Apple lovers desired more, wishing for a more interactive home screen, and this year, Apple acted as a gene.

At its 2022 WWDC address, Apple unveiled its major annual operating system updates. Following the popularity of iOS 15 in 2021, iOS 16 was expected to provide a slew of new features, and it didn't disappoint.

What’s new?

A list of new features released by Apple includes:

Lock Screen:

The lock screen is the first major change. Users may now add whatever function they want to see immediately on their screen, such as weather, fitness, clocks, and so on. This makes it extremely simple for consumers to access essential apps. Apple has added the feature to switch between lock screens, which was previously only available on its Apple Watch. We can also change colours and fonts!

Wallpapers:

People used to depend on third-party wallpapers since Apple's wallpapers were so dull, but Apple decided to change that this time. We now have a wide variety of new wallpapers, so much so that our favourite emoticons can now be wallpapered as well. To match the home screen and home screen backgrounds, we now have the option to adjust the background colour or simply blur it.

Notifications:

The notification panel has a new style that notifies users by springing notification bars from the bottom. With this one, Apple went for a really clean, yet sophisticated design. On iOS 16, we have new live notifications, so if you want Safari to keep you updated on match results all the time, you can do so without having to check the app frequently.

Messages:

In iOS 16, you may now edit messages, undo, send messages (Apple refers to this as "Undo Send"), and flag conversations as unread. A few minutes were allotted for dictation. It's now significantly improved and entirely on-device (no data connection is required). With the keyboard, you can seamlessly move from dictating to typing. Emoji identification is automated, auto-punctuation is included, and Siri is fully supported.

There are many more new features introduced by Apple, but these were by far the most highlighted. A Beta (testser) version for testers has been released and will soon be available for the public. The software will be released for public use in September in the USA and India.

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) and its nodal security agency Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) have issued a warning to Apple watch users, citing the device as a 'high severity' security risk. According to the warning issued, anyone running watchOS 8.7 or older is expected to be affected.

The government agency revealed that Apple Watch carried multiple vulnerabilities which make it an ideal target for hackers. The warning mentions that remote hackers may be able to get hold of the wearer's device and using the vulnerabilities, execute arbitrary codes and bypass security restrictions on the device.

If the hackers do manage to break into the Apple watch remotely, they will be able to access the private information of the user. With more and more users using Apple watches to communicate sensitive data such as their bank details, the hacking could prove catastrophic.

"These vulnerabilities exist in Apple watch due to buffer overflow in AppleAVD component; an authorization issue in AppleMobileFileInterity component; out-of-bounds write in Audio, ICU and WebKit component; type confusion in Multi-Touch component; Multiple out-of-bounds write and memory corruption in GPU Drivers component; out-of-bounds read in Kernel component; and memory initialization in libxml2 component." the agency explained the vulnerabilities.

Before the watch users get panicked, Apple has already rolled out a new OS update for the watch. The watchOS 8.7 update has security updates and patches, as advised by CERT-IN.

Thus, all users need to do is update their device by installing the latest software. To do so, the user needs to be connected to a wi-fi network and make sure that the device has at least 50 per cent battery.

On the watch, one needs to open settings and tap on software update in the General section. If the update is available, it will start downloading and the user can follow the instructions from there.

Apple, the giant iPhone maker plans to slow hiring and spending next year in some divisions citing potential economic downturn as the reason.

Apple plans to slow down hiring: Reports

'The Information' has reported that tech giant Apple's self-driving car efforts are stuck in low gear. With its team plagued by setbacks as rivals race ahead, the company's quest to produce a viable self-driving car remains stalled despite years of work.

According to the report, change in ever-shifting goals and leadership along with a lack of faith in the project by high-ranking Apple executives is the reason that self-driving cars have not been introduced by the company.

Since the death of its iconic co-founder Steve Jobs in October 2011, there has been buzz surrounding a potential Apple car with the vehicles being touted as the first new "big thing" from the company.

Citing interviews with people who worked on the project, 'The Information' reported that self-driving Apple cars have had trouble on streets near its Silicon Valley headquarters.

They strayed from its lanes, bumped curbs, and almost hit a jogger legally crossing a road.

During an interview released by the New York Times, Apple chief Tim Cook early last year portrayed self-driving cars as an ideal match for the technology titan.

Cook told journalist Kara Swisher's "Sway" podcast "An autonomous car is a robot and so there are a lot of things you can do with autonomy; we will see what Apple does."

Hinting at an option to build an autonomous-driving technology platform used by automakers, Cook expressed admiration for electric carmaker Tesla.

In 2016, Apple first revealed its self-driving tech aspirations and views autonomous driving systems as a "core technology" for the future.

Since the death of its iconic co-founder Steve Jobs in October 2011, there has been buzz surrounding a potential Apple car with the vehicles being touted as the first new "big thing" from the company. × Citing interviews with people who worked on the project, 'The Information' reported that self-driving Apple cars have had trouble on streets near its Silicon Valley headquarters. They strayed from its lanes, bumped curbs, and almost hit a jogger legally crossing a road. During an interview released by the New York Times, Apple chief Tim Cook early last year portrayed self-driving cars as an ideal match for the technology titan. Cook told journalist Kara Swisher's "Sway" podcast "An autonomous car is a robot and so there are a lot of things you can do with autonomy; we will see what Apple does." Hinting at an option to build an autonomous-driving technology platform used by automakers, Cook expressed admiration for electric carmaker Tesla. In 2016, Apple first revealed its self-driving tech aspirations and views autonomous driving systems as a "core technology" for the future. (With inputs from agencies) Watch WION's live TV here:

If you are an Apple user this story is for you. Apple has finally announced a new security feature it's called the lockdown mode but the question is why has apple come up with this feature?

Are you an Apple user? What is Apple's 'lockdown mode'?

Apple Inc. announced on Wednesday that it would provide "Lockdown Mode," a new feature, this fall in an effort to provide additional security for political dissidents, human rights activists, and other targets of sophisticated hacker attempts.

Apple releases a new security feature as it battles spyware firms

Hellbent on protecting its user’s privacy, Apple in a big update is planning to release a "Lockdown Mode" this fall. As per Apple Inc, this will add a new layer of protection for the frequent targets of sophisticated hacking attacks: human rights advocates, political dissidents etc. The move comes after it was discovered that two Israeli firms exploited flaws in Apple's software to remotely break into iPhones that too without the target even clicking or tapping on a malicious link. When enabled, this mode will block most attachments sent to the iPhone's Messages app. Security experts think NSO Group took advantage of a weakness in the way Apple handled communication attachments.

'Pegasus' a snooping software by the NSO Group is one such spyware that can carry out such attacks. The maker has been sued by Apple and has been placed on a trade blacklist by US officials.

The new feature will protect against "zero click" hacking tactics. As per an Apple representative still very uncommon and most users won't even need to activate the new mode.

Companies who sell such spyware have argued that they do it to help governments combat threats to national security.

However, human rights organisations and journalists have frequently shown how spyware is used to target civil society, stifle political dissent, and meddle in elections.

Apple has also promised that it will pay up to $2 million for each vulnerability that security researchers can uncover in the new mode, which will help strengthen the feature. According to Apple representatives, this is the greatest "bug bounty" available in the market.

A group of employees called AppleCORE (Coalition of Organized Retail Employees) campaigned for unionisation, resulting in a majority of employees at a US Apple store having voted to form a union, a first for Apple, which has so far tried to discourage unionizing attempts.

Of the 110 employees at the Towson, Maryland shop, 65 voted in favour and 33 against, according to a live count broadcast Saturday by the federal agency overseeing the vote.

"We did it, Towson! We won our union vote! Thanks to all who worked so hard and all who supported us! Now we celebrate... Tomorrow we keep organizing," AppleCORE tweeted.

They are demanding a say in deciding on wages, hours and safety measures.

Saturday's result means that the shop's employees, who have been voting since Wednesday, should form their own branch of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) union, once the agency has certified the results.

IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr said he applauded the workers' "courage."

"They made a huge sacrifice for thousands of Apple employees across the nation who had all eyes on this election. I ask Apple CEO Tim Cook to respect the election results and fast-track a first contract for the dedicated IAM CORE Apple employees in Towson," he said in a statement.

"This victory shows the growing demand for unions at Apple stores and different industries across our nation."
It was not the first time employees at an Apple store have tried to unionize, but it was the first attempt that resulted in a vote.

Apple's director of distribution and human resources, Deirdre O'Brien, visited the shop in May to address employees, and said, "I want to start out by saying it's your right to join a union, but it's equally your right not to join a union.”

"If you’re faced with that decision, I want to encourage you to consult a wide range of people and sources to understand what it could be like to work at Apple under a collective bargaining agreement," he added.

She said that the presence of an intermediary would complicate relations between Apple and its employees.
Unions, on the decline for decades, have won several symbolic victories in the United States in recent months, with President Joe Biden voicing his support.

From CarPlay updates to M2 chip, Apple Inc launched several new features and updates at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

From CarPlay updates to M2 chip: Top announcements at Apple Developers Conference

Apple unveiled its much-anticipated iOS16 at this year’s WWDC, offering a glimpse of what is to be expected from the new update. As expected, the announcement did not disappoint the iPhone users as iOS16 had some important and cool new features. In the new updates, iPhones will have an all-new LockScreen, iCloud Shared Photo Library, updates to Messages and Mail and more. iOS 16 will most likely be released in September alongside the upcoming iPhone 14 and will be available for the iPhone 8 and above. However, developers can download the software now.

Here are all the important new features coming to iPhones later this year.

Messages

It is unknown whether this new feature would sway people away from WhatsApp, but it can certainly pose problems for the Meta-owned messaging app.

"Embarrassing typos are a thing of the past," said Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi as he introduced three of the most requested features for the Messages app.

iPhone users can now edit and undo messages in iOS16. So, if you notice a typo after sending a message, you'll be able to edit it. A tiny "edited" appears in the status under the message.

The next new feature is that you can immediately recall a sent message. This feature works by long pressing the text which will then be prompted by many options. Among them, you have to press ‘Undo Send’ to prevent it from being read.

Lastly, you can now mark messages and threads as unread. It will help you to respond to a message sometime later.

New customisable lock screen

Taking a leaf out of the Android, iPhone users can now customise the lock screen in their iPhones, by adding more widgets. This much-needed feature makes it easy to get information at a glance, such as upcoming calendar events, the weather, battery levels, alarms, time zones, activity ring progress, and more. You can also change the colour of the background photo and also the font on the lock screen.

Lock Screen comes with new gallery

The new Lock Screen gallery will feature a range of options, from a weather wallpaper to see live weather conditions, an Astronomy wallpaper for views of the Earth, Moon, and solar system and more. Users can also create Lock Screens using their favourite emoji or colour combinations. With multiple Lock Screens, users can switch between their favourites with just a swipe.

Notifications and live activities

One of the problems that users faced were the clunky notifications that would pop up on the home screen.

iOS 15 introduced “summaries”, which went a long way towards helping the situation, but they pale in comparison to Android.

In iO16, Apple seems to have addressed the issue in a major way. Under the new software update, notifications have been moved to the bottom of your display. Once you receive them, instead of being compiled into a list, they appear like a vertical carousel. This not only looks better but should be a big help for one-handed use of your iPhone.

There’s also a cool new feature called Live Activities which makes it easier to follow sporting events, workouts or even the progress of an Uber ride.

Wallet and Apple Pay Later

ID cards from more states will be available in your Wallet app along with more security and privacy features. In iOS 16 you can also protect your identity and age. So rather than showing your exact birth date, the Wallet app will display your ID and that you're over 21.

iOS 16 makes sharing keys easier with apps like Mail and Messages.

Apple Maps gets multi-stop routing

Apple Maps is introducing multi-stop routing, so users can plan up to 15 stops in advance and automatically sync routes from Mac to iPhone when they’re ready to go. Maps is also bringing transit updates to users, making it easy for riders to view how much their journey will cost, add transit cards to Wallet, see low balances, and replenish transit cards, all without leaving Maps.

Siri gets the ability to run shortcuts

Siri adds the ability to run shortcuts as soon as an app is downloaded without requiring upfront setup. Users can add emoji when sending a message, choose to send messages automatically — skipping the confirmation step — and hang up the phone and FaceTime calls completely hands-free by simply saying “Hey Siri, hang up.”
