Apple unveiled its much-anticipated iOS16 at this year’s WWDC, offering a glimpse of what is to be expected from the new update. As expected, the announcement did not disappoint the iPhone users as iOS16 had some important and cool new features. In the new updates, iPhones will have an all-new LockScreen, iCloud Shared Photo Library, updates to Messages and Mail and more. iOS 16 will most likely be released in September alongside the upcoming iPhone 14 and&nbsp;will be available for the iPhone 8 and above. Messages

It is unknown whether this new feature would sway people away from WhatsApp, but it can certainly pose problems for the Meta-owned messaging app.

"Embarrassing typos are a thing of the past," said Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi as he introduced three of the most requested features for the Messages app.

iPhone users can now edit and undo messages in iOS16. So, if you notice a typo after sending a message, you'll be able to edit it. A tiny "edited" appears in the status under the message.

The next new feature is that you can immediately recall a sent message. This feature works by long pressing the text which will then be prompted by many options. Among them, you have to press ‘Undo Send’ to prevent it from being read.

Lastly, you can now mark messages and threads as unread. It will help you to respond to a message sometime later.

New customisable lock screen

Taking a leaf out of the Android, iPhone users can now customise the lock screen in their iPhones, by adding more widgets. This much-needed feature makes it easy to get information at a glance, such as upcoming calendar events, the weather, battery levels, alarms, time zones, activity ring progress, and more. You can also change the colour of the background photo and also the font on the lock screen.

Lock Screen comes with new&nbsp;gallery

The new Lock Screen gallery will feature a range of options, from a weather wallpaper to see live weather conditions, an Astronomy wallpaper for views of the Earth, Moon, and solar system and more. Users can also create Lock Screens using their favourite emoji or colour combinations. With multiple Lock Screens, users can switch between their favourites with just a swipe.

Notifications and live activities

One of the problems that users faced were the clunky notifications that would pop up on the home screen.

iOS 15 introduced “summaries”, which went a long way towards helping the situation, but they pale in comparison to Android.

In iO16, Apple seems to have addressed the issue in a major way. Under the new software update, notifications have been moved to the bottom of your display. Once you receive them, instead of being compiled into a list, they appear like a vertical carousel. This not only looks better but should be a big help for one-handed use of your iPhone.

There’s also a cool new feature called Live Activities which makes it easier to follow sporting events, workouts or even the progress of an Uber ride.

Wallet and Apple Pay Later

ID cards from more states will be available in your Wallet app along with more security and privacy features. In iOS 16 you can also protect your identity and age. So rather than showing your exact birth date, the Wallet app will display your ID and that you're over 21.

Apple Maps gets multi-stop routing

Apple Maps is introducing multi-stop routing, so users can plan up to 15 stops in advance and automatically sync routes from Mac to iPhone when they’re ready to go. Maps is also bringing transit updates to users, making it easy for riders to view how much their journey will cost, add transit cards to Wallet, see low balances, and replenish transit cards, all without leaving Maps.

Siri gets the ability to run shortcuts

Siri adds the ability to run shortcuts as soon as an app is downloaded without requiring upfront setup. Users can add emoji when sending a message, choose to send messages automatically — skipping the confirmation step — and hang up the phone and FaceTime calls completely hands-free by simply saying “Hey Siri, hang up.”

Buy now pay later

Apple Pay Later will allow users to pay using Apple Pay where it is accepted and pay for it in four installments over six weeks, without any additional fee.

Apple has also boosted security features on the new iOS. The company has launched safety check in the settings app. This will enable the user to revoke access to personal data like location etc.

Users can also logout from iCloud accounts on other devices for added safety from the Safety Check page.

The new iOS will have feature fresh updates for CarPlay including new gauge clusters and automakers including Ford Motor Co and Jaguar Land Rover will integrate the feature with their cars.

Apple revealed the M2 chip, the successor to the company's first in-house chip, named M1.

The latest M2 chip, which comes with 24 gigabytes of unified memory, is 18% better than its predecessor and can playback multiple streams of 4K and 8K video.

The M2 chip will be loaded on a brand new MacBook Air, redesigned around the M2 chip. Weighing just 2.7 pounds, new Air is 11.3 inches thick, fitted with a 13.6 inch liquid Retina display and will have a Magsafe charging system.

The MacBook Air will start at $1,199 and come in gray, gold, silver and blue.

Apple's iOS 16: iPhone 'Safety Check' feature to help people in abusive relationships

Nearly 15 years after the iPhone sparked the smartphone revolution, Apple is assembling the pieces for what it hopes will become its next business-altering device: a headset that blends the digital world with the real one.

The company has enlisted Hollywood directors such as Jon Favreau to develop video content for a headset that it is expected to ship next year, according to three people familiar with that work. Favreau, an executive producer of “Prehistoric Planet” on Apple TV+, is working to bring that show’s dinosaurs to life on the headset, which looks like a pair of ski goggles and aims to offer virtual- and augmented-reality experiences, these people said.

Separately, at its annual conference for developers this Monday, Apple plans to unveil software tools that would allow apps to add new camera and voice functionality, laying the groundwork for a hands-free interface that customers will eventually be able to navigate on the headset, according to two people familiar with the project and documents reviewed by The New York Times.

An Apple spokesperson, Trudy Muller, declined to comment on future projects. A spokesperson for Favreau could not comment.

The planned headset will thrust Apple into an emerging competition to define the future of mixed reality. Microsoft, Google and Facebook’s parent company, Meta, are in various stages of developing software and hardware to create environments where 3D digital images and the physical world coexist.

Last year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg dropped Facebook as his company’s name and committed it to building a concept known as the metaverse, where the online, virtual and real worlds coalesce in a new universe. He and others believe it could become the next wave of computing, succeeding the smartphone age dominated by Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android software, much as those platforms followed the decades of Windows and Macintosh.

“This is the next frontier,” said Carolina Milanesi, a technology analyst with Creative Strategies, a technology research firm. “For Apple, this is about a new computing experience and opportunity to engage consumers with a device and new experiences that build on what they’ve done with content.”

The mixed-reality work is expected to be overshadowed during the keynote of Apple’s conference Monday, which will largely be devoted to the company’s existing software systems. Apple may also announce a redesigned MacBook Air with slimmer borders around its display than current models and updated processors, analysts said.

Apple’s development of virtual-reality content and software tools is central to creating experiences that give its future headset purpose. Its last major new product, the Apple Watch, was launched with about 3,000 apps but struggled to take off because tech reviewers said few of those apps were useful. Similar shortcomings have dogged Meta’s Quest virtual-reality headset, which surpassed 10 million sales last year, because many view it as a gaming device.

From its original Macintosh to its iPad, Apple has pursued products that attract a broad swath of potential customers and have an array of uses. It sold an estimated 240 million iPhones last year, accounting for about half of its $366 billion in total sales. To make the headset worthwhile, analysts said, it will need to have utilities that transcend the niche world of video games.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been talking about the potential of augmented reality for years. In 2016, he told investors that the company was investing heavily in it and considered it a “great commercial opportunity.” Around that time, many employees on Apple’s campus were reading “Ready Player One,” a futuristic novel about virtual reality, and talking about the possibilities of creating Apple’s own mixed-reality world.

Apple hired an engineer from Dolby Technologies, Mike Rockwell, and tasked him with leading the effort. His early efforts to create an augmented-reality product were hobbled by weak computing power, two people familiar with the project said. Continuing challenges with its battery power have forced Apple to postpone its release until next year, those people said.

The augmented-reality initiative has been divisive inside Apple. At least two members of its industrial design team said they had left the company, in part, because they had some concerns about developing a product that might change the way people interact with one another. Such sensitivities have increased inside the company amid rising public concern about children’s screen time.

With Rockwell at the helm, the product would be one of the first to come out of Apple led by its engineering team rather than its co-founder Steve Jobs, who died in 2011, and its former design chief, Jony Ive, who left the company in 2019. The Apple Watch project was led by Ive and his designers, who defined how it looked, operated and was marketed.

Apple is never afraid to drop features from its devices. It has ditched ports on the MacBook even removed chargers from iPhone boxes and even dropped the headphone jack on the iPhone and this time it looks like they may be removing buttons from the MacBook.

Battered by Xi Jinping’s anti-Covid policy, Apple is looking to boost production outside China, reports said, adding that India and Vietnam are being seriously looked at for potential alternatives.

Over 90 per cent of Apple products like iPhones, iPads and MacBook laptops are manufactured in China by outside contractors.

With Apple’s being exposed to potential manufacturing snags due to China’s zero-Covid police, the tech behemoth is already in talks with some of its contract manufacturers to look for alternatives, the Wall Street Journal reported citing people involved in the discussion.

Nikkei Asia reported that the lockdowns in Shanghai and Kunshan have forced Apple to halt production at three suppliers, which could have a much more significant impact – especially the Pegatron shutdown.

Pegatron, which roughly makes 20 to 30 per cent of all iPhones, had said in April that operations at its two production sites in Shanghai and Kunshan have been suspended to comply with government regulations.

Similarly, MacBook maker Quanta and iPad assembler Compal are the two other suppliers who also had to shut to comply with the Covid guidelines.

In Shanghai, 31&nbsp;companies&nbsp;run production facilities that supply to Apple.

Moreover, the Shanghai lockdown made a huge dent in Apple’s revenue for the April-June quarter as the company has indicated up to $8 billion loss in sales.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said in an earnings call that "we have estimated the constraints to be in the range of $4 to $8 billion and these constraints are primarily centred around the Shanghai&nbsp;corridor".

"The Covid-related disruptions are also having some impact on customer demand in China," added Apple CFO Luca Maestri.

As per the analysis from Bespoke Investment Group, a research firm, The Nasdaq has dropped more than 20 per cent in the last 30 trading days. According to the firm, a dip of that magnitude has only happened 11 times earlier, and nine of those declines were “related with recession.”

Big slump: US stock markets lost more than $7 trillion this year

After surging oil prices propelled shares of the world's largest crude exporter to record highs, Saudi Aramco has surpassed Apple as the world's most valuable company, while a broader tech stock sell-off weighs on the iPhone manufacturer.

On Wednesday, the Saudi Arabian oil company's market capitalization was $2.426 trillion, slightly higher than Apple's $2.415 trillion.

It's the first time Saudi Aramco has reclaimed the top rank since 2020, and it comes after a year-long sell-off in technology stocks.

In early January, Apple became the first company to reach a market capitalization of $3 trillion, though its stock has fallen in recent months as investors reconsider the tech sector's lofty valuations in light of the Fed's policy reversal and concerns that inflation will weaken consumers' spending habits.

Given that Apple was formed in a garage in California in 1976 and Saudi Aramco is a state-backed colossus with just a tiny proportion of freely floating shares, several analysts dispute the value of comparing the two companies.

Saudi Aramco raised a record $25.6 billion in 2019 when the government, which still controls 94% of the firm, listed 1.5 percent of its shares in the world's largest ever initial public offering.

The government transferred another 4% of its stock to Saudi Arabia's national wealth fund in February.

Saudi Aramco's shares, which are traded on the Riyadh Stock Exchange, have climbed 27% since the beginning of the year to a new high of 46 riyals ($12.26).

He told analysts on the call that supply-chain issues would hurt sales in the quarter by $4 billion to $8 billion, "substantially larger" than the hit in the second quarter.

Supply problems were focused on a corridor in Shanghai, China and reflected covid&nbsp;disruptions and chip shortages, he added. The pandemic was also affecting demand in China, he said.

Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said that almost all of the Chinese factories doing final assembly of&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;products had restarted after recent covid&nbsp;shutdowns, but the company is not forecasting when the chips shortage, mostly affecting older products, would end.

Cook said he hoped covid&nbsp;issues would be "transitory" and "get better over time."

At least one analyst said the outlook lacked clarity.

"We were all looking for just better guidance on what is really going on over there (China) ... and that didn't come out," said Louis Navellier, chief investment officer for Navellier &amp; Associates.

Kim Caughey Forrest, Chief Investment Officer at Bokeh Capital Partners, said that ongoing demand remained a big question, despite&nbsp;Apple's management of supply chain in the March quarter.

Amazon on Thursday posted a disappointing outlook as it was swamped by higher costs, sending its shares down 9 per cent&nbsp;after the close, and Intel Corp forecast a bleak quarter based on supply chain issues, and its stock fell 4 per cent.

Both companies, along with&nbsp;Apple, are part of the broader Nasdaq index, which has fallen nearly 19% this year as rising inflation drives investors elsewhere.

Apple's overall fiscal second-quarter revenue was $97.3 billion, up 8.6 per cent&nbsp;from last year and higher than analysts' average estimate of $93.89 billion, according to Refinitiv data.

Worldwide phone sales revenue was $50.6 billion, a 5.5 per cent&nbsp;increase from a year ago, and services sales rose 17 per cent&nbsp;to $19.8 billion, both ahead of analyst average forecasts.

However, Maestri said that services growth would decelerate from the March quarter, while remaining in double-digits. He cited several factors, including more unfavorable currency exchange rates.

Total profit was $25 billion, or $1.52 per share and easily topped analysts' expectations of $23.2 billion and $1.43.

Apple&nbsp;also raised its dividend 5 per cent&nbsp;to $0.23 per share and the board approved a buyback for an added $90 billion in shares.

Investors have been bracing for drops in consumer spending on tech gadgets and services as the war in Ukraine and other factors drive up the cost of oil, food and other staples.

Cook shrugged off an analyst question on inflation and consumers.

"We're monitoring that closely. But right now, our main focus, frankly speaking, is on the supply side," he said.

Asked about rising inflation, Maestri said demand, particularly for iPhones, had been higher than the company had anticipated at the start of the quarter. But he noted inflation was affecting expenses.

The pandemic, including the shift to hybrid work, has benefited other businesses.
