In what comes as a landmark decision, the European Union Parliament on Tuesday approved new rules that make sure a universal charging port is introduced for electronic gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, cameras, e-readers, earbuds and other devices by 2024. The motion passed with 602 votes in favour and 13 against it. Accordingly, the vote by the EU parliament confirms the previous agreement of making USB-C chargers used by Android-based devices the standard for all of the continent. Succinctly put, all devices in the EU will have to carry the same charging port. Read more: Apple to double iPhone exports from India by next year The move is expected to hurt Apple more than other electronic companies. Reportedly, iPhones are charged from a lightning cable while Android-based devices use USB-C chargers. Apple also has been pushing its proprietary MagSafe charging technology to more and more devices. The ruling was prompted after complaints from both iPhone and Android users had the same theme of having to switch to different chargers whenever switching devices. As reported extensively by WION, the Cupertino-based company, for long, has been panned by users and critics alike for introducing myriad variations that burn a hole in the pocket of consumers. While Apple will have to pivot on its charging slot, it is facing flak for shipping iPhones without a battery charger. Experts have called this practice a 'tie-sale' where Apple obliged the consumer to purchase a second product of its exclusive manufacture which was an abusive and illegal commercial practice. In September, the Brazilian government levied a fine of $2.38 million on Apple and ordered the company to stop selling its iPhones without a battery charger in the South American country. India is making giant strides in presenting itself as an alternative to the world's factory i.e China. The country exported more than $1 billion worth of iPhones in five months since April, per a Bloomberg report. The total exports till March 2023 are expected to reach $2.5 billion which will be double compared to the same yearly period through March 2022. Currently, iPhone 11,12 and 13 models dominate the export from the South Asian country to Europe and West Asia Although the total share of iPhone production from India is still far less comparatively, the recent trend suggests that the country is quickly bridging the gap. As reported by WION, in what comes as a landmark shift, Apple, last week officially announced that it was manufacturing its latest, flagship iPhone 14 in India alongside China. “The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” read the company's statement. Apple to double iPhone exports from India by next year

After anticipating dwindling demands for new iPhone14 models, Apple has reportedly asked the suppliers to cut back on production this year.

The California-based tech behemoth is planning to reduce production by as many as six million units, Bloomberg reported quoting people familiar with the matter.

Now, the tech firm is looking to produce 90 million handsets for the period, which would be roughly the same level as the last year and in line with Apple’s original forecast this summer.

The firm had previously told its suppliers to prepare for a 7 per cent increase in orders.

Moreover, the demand has been more for the iPhone 14 pro models than the entry-level ones, which has forced one of the suppliers to focus the production capacity exclusively on the premium versions, it has reported.

On Wednesday, Apple’s shares went down about four per cent following reports of cuts in production plans this year.

On Monday, the US tech giant announced that it began making its new iPhone 14 in India sooner than anticipated, as it moves some of its production away from China.

Apple had worked with Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group, its most important production partner, with the original goal of assembling iPhones in Chennai about two months after its global launch, Bloomberg had reported.

Apple's move to diversify the supply chains has been in response to rising tensions between US and China over Taiwan and trade.

Earlier this month, JP Morgan analysts said that they expect Apple to move around 5 per cent of iPhone production to India this year.

The report also predicted that 25 per cent of all iPhone production will be in the South Asian nation by 2025.

Apple slashes iPhone 14 production target by 6 million units as demand stutters: Report

Apple Inc is dropping plans to increase production of its new iPhones this year after an anticipated surge in demand failed to materialize, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

WION Business News | Apple drops plan to boost production: Reports

The new iPhones have courted quite a lot of controversy since their anticipated launch. From shaking cameras to demand issues, the latest line-up of iPhones has made news for all the wrong reasons.

The iPhone 14 pro is priced starting Rs 1,29,900.

Apple claims a few incremental upgrades justify the hefty price tag despite the new iPhone 14 Pro looking identical to its predecessor. Let's break them down for you.

DYNAMIC DISPLAY: FIXES THE UGLY NOTCH

It’s 2022 and Apple has finally said goodbye to that ugly notch or rather given it a facelift by turning it into what it calls “Dynamic Island”. It’s a black contextual box which serves as an interactive display, delivers live alerts, monitors the length of your phone calls, informs you about the battery left in your AirPods and a lot more. Apple loyalists will love this feature since it integrates seamlessly into the phone’s UI and gives the notch serves some purpose after all!

However, let me be frank, it still looks strange under the sunlight.

ALWAYS-ON DISPLAY: A BATTERY GUZZLER

This is where Apple is trying to keep up with Android phones and at last, gives us an always-on display. So, if you lock your iPhone 14 Pro, it dims in brightness and keeps your screen visible at all times. Some would find it useful, I found it to be a battery guzzler.

iPHONES: BRIGHTEST PHONES IN THE WORLD

This is undeniably the most practical and useful feature in the new iPhone. The Super Retina XDR display is rated for up to 1,600 nits of brightness with HDR content and 2,000 nits outdoors in bright sunlight! In case you use an iPhone 13 Pro, the new iPhone is twice as bright.

CAMERA: A CONTENT CREATOR’S ASSET

Apple has always positioned its cameras as the showstopper feature in all its previous iterations. The iPhone 14 Pro also gets major upgrades in its camera system and evidently targets the new generation of content creators. The “Photonic Engine” offers improvement in low-light photography making the new camera system ideal for low-light shots.

The action mode is fantastic for high-adrenalin shots or even to record your kids’ many antics — making it a big hit among new-age parenting blogs too.

Apart from that, the Telephoto camera and 48MP camera are gimmicks at best.

BATTERY LIFE: BETTER, NOT BEST

Once again, users get an incremental upgrade in the battery life of the iPhone 14 Pro when compared to its predecessor. The new A16 Bionic chipset makes the user experience smooth and reliable and leaves no room for complaints especially for habitual Apple users.

iPHONE 14 PRO: SHOULD YOU BUY IT?

If you hold the iPhone 13 Pro and the new 14 Pro next to each other, you will struggle to tell them apart. The design, feel and experience of the two iPhones is near-identical and it’s difficult to find reasons to upgrade.

In a market saturated with budget phones trying to offer the best, the iPhones find themselves struggling to woo buyers. In the age of foldable phones and flip phones, a “Dynamic Island” doesn’t impress most.

But then again, Apple loyalists stick to what they know best and would want to upgrade. In that case, upgrade only and only if your iPhone is older than the 12 Pro.

The company released a statement on Monday, confiming the media reports doing the rounds for weeks now. “The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” said the statement. Reportedly, the made-in-India iPhone 14 will not only be available for sale locally, but will also be exported as well. According to reports, Apple is expected to move five per cent of its global production of iPhone 14 to India by the end of the year. As reported by WION, before the official confirmation, Apple had already started working with its local suppliers in India last month to speed up the production pace. The Chip Race: US lawmakers urge Apple to review decision

The US government and technology giant Apple are currently sparring with each other over the latter's potential deal with Chinese chipmaker Yangtze Memory Technologies Co.

Reportedly, the US senators fear that the deal poses threat to the country's national security.

Both Democrat and Republican chairs of the senate intelligence committee recently wrote a letter to Avril Haines, director of national intelligence, requesting a review of the deal.

“We write to convey our extreme concern about the possibility that Apple Inc will soon procure 3D Nand memory chips from Yangtze Memory Technologies Co," wrote Mark Warner and Marco Rubio, the Democratic chair and Republican vice-chair of the committee.

“Such a decision would introduce significant privacy and security vulnerabilities to the global digital supply chain that Apple helps shape given YMTC’s extensive, but often opaque, ties to the Chinese Communist party,” the letter read.

Moreover, the senators asked Haines to conduct a thorough investigation on the role YMTC plays in helping Chinese companies such as Huawei, which have been sanctioned by the White House.

Earlier, speaking to Financial Times, Apple remarked that it was “evaluating” sourcing from YMTC for some iPhones in China.

For years, US led the technology battle with China. However, the tips have recently scaled in Beijing's favour. As reported by WION, according to a study presented by Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), US could lose the tech competition to China if it does not take action on the 5G, AI, and microchip core fronts.

Apple's in-app purchases rise by 40% due to its recent privacy updates

Alphabet's Google and Meta Platforms have been fined tens of millions of dollars by South Korea for privacy law violations, authorities said on Wednesday. In a statement, the Personal Information Protection Commission said Google has been fined 69.2 billion won ($50 million) and Meta 30.8 billion won ($22 million).

The panel said that both the firms collected user information without telling them clearly about it or taking their consent for analysing behavioural information to infer their interests or use them for customised advertisements.

Both the companies displayed displeasure with the decision and said they have always been transparent and worked with clients in a legally compliant way.

"We disagree with the PIPC’s findings, and will be reviewing the full written decision once it’s shared with us," a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying by Reuters.

"We’ve always demonstrated our commitment to making ongoing updates that give users control and transparency, while providing the most helpful products possible. We remain committed to engaging with the PIPC to protect the privacy of South Korean users."

A Meta spokesperson said, "While we respect the commission's decision, we are confident that we work with our clients in a legally compliant way that meets the processes required by local regulations. As such, we do not agree with the commission's decision, and will be open to all options including seeking a ruling from the court."

Meanwhile, Google suffered one of its biggest setbacks on Wednesday when a top European court fined it 4.125 billion euros ($4.13 billion) for using its Android mobile operating system to thwart rivals.

The unit of US tech giant Alphabet (GOOGL.O) had challenged an earlier ruling, but the decision was broadly upheld by the Europe's second-highest court in Wednesday's ruling and the fine was reduced only modestly from 4.34 billion euros.

Apple launches iOS 16 with some of the biggest updates to Lock Screen

Apple launched its most-awaited product of the year—the iPhone 14. The new phones boast improved performance, better camera and battery, and new innovative safety features.

The new iPhone 14 costs $799, iPhone 14 Plus $899, iPhone 14 Pro $999 and iPhone 14 Pro Max is priced at $1,099. All the promising devices are up for preorders now.

While upgrading to a new iPhone or switching to an iOS ecosystem, a lot of factors come into play, the primary being the price. Unlike the Android phones which start at sub $200, iPhones are costly, even their most basic version costs $799.

Though the company touts iPhone 14 to be a superior upgrade to its predecessor, iPhone 13, not all the models are built on the same specification.

A closer look at the new lineup can offer a glimpse of the stark difference between the pro and non-pro models.

So, before you start crunching numbers or break out the credit cards to rush to buy it, here’s a guide as to why should skip the phone.

Processor

If you own an iPhone 13, then you can comfortably ignore iPhone 14, as the specifications of both phones are exactly the same.

For starters, both iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 have same processor—A15 Bionic Chip.

Though there is a minor difference, iPhone 14’s processor comes with 5-core GPU (found in iPhone 13 pro), iPhone 13 comes with 4-core GPU, offering slight improvements to overall battery life and performance.

Camera and Display

Both come with Super Retina XDR OLED and have 12MP main (f/1.5) and 12MP ultrawide (f/2.4) cameras.

Though there are a couple of differences which come down to some small hardware tweaks and improved software photography.

iPhone 14’s main sensor sports smaller 1.9-micron pixels and an f/1.5 aperture, which is the same as the iPhone 13 Pro. Meaning that it can take low light pictures with crisp detail.

Secondly, the 12MP selfie camera has been updated with an f/1.9 aperture, again the same as the iPhone 13 Pro, which allows for better low light photography.

Design

The iPhone 14 looks very similar to the iPhone 13. Both are made of glass and aluminum with glossy backs. The iPhone 14 has a Ceramic Shield on the front glass for added durability, just like the previous model.

Dimensions are almost identical, too. iPhone 14 is measuring in at 5.78 x 2.82 x 0.31 inches with a weight of 6.07 ounces, slightly lighter than iPhone 13 (6.10 ounces).

Battery

This time Apple has bumped up the battery for iPhone 14, but it is not a significant increase compared to iPhone 13.

The new phone comes up with 3,240mAh compared to its predecessor’s 3,279mAh.

Expectedly, the larger 14 Plus comes a far larger battery than that, with an up to 25 per cent increase in longevity over the iPhone 13.

However, we have to wait for the teardown videos to find out how much difference the battery performance makes between the old and new iPhones.

Apple and Alphabet, Google's parent company have been slapped with an anti-competitive complaint in Mexico. Reportedly, the complaint was filed on Friday by Mony de Swaan Addati, the former telecommunications chief.

Apple and Alphabet, Google's parent company have been slapped with an anti-competitive complaint in Mexico. Reportedly, the complaint was filed on Friday by Mony de Swaan Addati, the former telecommunications chief. Addati filed the complaint to the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) accusing Apple and Google of "completely inhibit(ing) competition by taking advantage of their monopoly in app stores to tie use of their own payment processing systems for in-app purchases." He further added that Google Play store and Apple store charge 15 per cent to 20 per cent commission which is unfair and has forced up prices for consumers. The former telecommunications head stated that he had taken the case to Mexico's competition regulator initially. However, after the body failed to act, he was forced to bring the complaint to IFT. "I have full confidence that (the IFT) will investigate and exercise its powers - in line with international best practices - so that these companies stop abusing their market power to the detriment of developers and consumers," said Addati. Akin to Mexico and Addati's complaint, the complainants in the UK also claimed that Apple forced developers to use its payment system for in-app purchases while gulping 30 per cent commission on such transactions. Google and Apple face another anti-competitive complaint, this time in Mexico

The US justice jepartment told a federal judge that Google is paying billions of dollars annually to illegally remain the top search engine.

Describing the payments as “enormous numbers,” Department of Justice attorney Kenneth Dintzer said telecom giants and companies being paid include Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co.

During a hearing in Washington, which marked the first major face-off in the case, Dintzer told Judge Amit Mehta “Google invests billions in defaults, knowing people won’t change them.”

“They are buying default exclusivity because defaults matter a lot,” he added.

Alleging the company has sought to maintain its online search monopoly in violation of antitrust laws, Google’s contracts form the basis of the DOJ’s landmark antitrust lawsuit.

“You don’t have to go to Google to shop on Amazon. You don’t have to go to Google to buy plane tickets on Expedia,” he said.

Highlighting that Google controls both the most popular browser and the second-most popular mobile operating system, the DOJ said having fresh data on user search queries is key to a search engine’s success.

Pointing out its default contracts have hemmed in potential rivals, DOJ’s Dintzer focused on the mechanics of Google’s search engine during his presentation.

Allowing it to prevent rivals from gaining the scale that would be needed to challenge its search engine, Google’s contracts make it the “gateway” by which most people find websites on the internet, according to Dintzer.

US justice department accuses Google of paying billions annually to illegally remain top search engine

A senior Russian minister said on Thursday (September 8) that Russian will gets a chance to buy the new Apple iPhone 14 in spite of the US company's departure from the country.

Trade and Industry Minister Denis Manturov was asked whether iPhone 14 will be available in Russia.

"Why not? If consumers want to buy these phones, yes. There will be the opportunity," he said, as quoted by Reuters.

Apple has halted new product sales in Russia in March following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Apple products like iPhone, MacBook have remained available in Russia as sellers sold their remaining stock.

Russian mobile network MTS on Thursday morning was already selling the new iPhone 14 models on pre-order. Prices start from 84,990 roubles ($1,398) for the 128GB version.

MTS said delivery could take up to 120 days and it retained the right to cancel orders if it faced difficulties importing the products.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request to comment.

Manturov, who is also a deputy prime minister, said last month that the scheme, which covers Western products ranging from luxury clothes to cars, could reach $16 billion in value this year, equivalent to around 4% of Russia's 2021 imports.

The latest iPhone series has an improved camera and satellite messaging for emergencies and a new digital identification system to obviate the need for a physical sim card. Apple also unveiled a premium digital watch.

But some users have complaints that during the 90-minute presentation at the company's California headquarters, the company did not include any surprise reveals.

As expected, the new phones come with improved cameras, sharper sensors, faster processors, and a longer-lasting battery.

This time, Apple has even leaned into safety technologies like an “Emergency SOS” function. It will let users request help when they are in remote areas without a wireless connection.

Notably, the iPhone 14 is not a bad phone, but it's underwhelming as, for many years, apple's new iPhones have mostly featured incremental upgrades and this year's models are no exception.

Technology experts believe innovation, that was once considered to be a hallmark of Apple, is missing in the new iPhones and they simply don't have a 'wow' factor.

Hence, for certain consumers, Apple's new iPhones are worth upgrading. But you can avoid upgrading if your iPhone is not more than two years old.

In times, when Apple's arch-rival Samsung is innovating with foldable phones, Apple is still catching up with improvements.

Other than the iPhone 14, the Apple watch ultra is also creating a lot of buzz. It's a more durable watch and designed for outdoor enthusiasts. But at 799 dollars, it is expensive.

Apple launches iPhone 14: How good are the new iPhones? Are they worth the money?

Apple’s much-awaited iPhone 14 series was launched officially on Wednesday, with minor, yet most recognisable, tweaks to the Pro and Pro Max versions.

As rumoured widely before the official launch, Apple has ditched its mini version and started with the regular iPhone 14.

Apples has launched the phone in four models— the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

While iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro have smaller screens (6.1 inches and 6.7 inches), the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max are the ones which have bigger screens.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has called the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max the “most innovative pro lineup yet.”

There is a massive hardware difference between the Pro and non-pro versions of the iPhone.

While iPhone 14 and 14 Pro come with last year's Apple A15 Bionic SoCs, the Pro models are powered by the latest Apple Bionic A16 SoC.

The latest smartphones come with e-sim activation without Wi-Fi in the US. For the first time, the iPhone models in the US will not have a SIM tray.

But, among the most notable feature in all the models of iPhone is the satellite emergency communication technology that can be used to send SOS message over satellite.

The feature will start in US and Canada, and it will be free with iPhone 14 for two years.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus prices and specifications

Pricing for the iPhone 14 starts at $799 for 128GB version, just like iPhone 13, and will be available on September 16.

The iPhone 14 Plus, which also comes with 128GB base storage, starts at $899 and is available on October 7. Pre-orders for both models will open on September 9 in US.

In India, the iPhone 14 price in India is set at Rs. 79,900, while the iPhone 14 Plus will be starting at Rs. 89,900.

iPhone 14 features a flat-edge aerospace-grade aluminium frame, with Ceramic Shield material on the front, and IP68 dust and water resistance rating — just like the previous generation.

The phone sports a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display which is said to be better in terms of brightness and colour reproduction as compared to last year's handset. Apple said it offers 1200nits peak brightness and support for Dolby Vision.

The features of iPhone 14 Plus are similar to the iPhone 14 except the bigger screen size and battery backup.

The handset has 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display and Apple claims that the Plus version has “the best battery life ever in an iPhone”.

Just like the iPhone 13 series, Apple continues to offer the Face ID technology as the only biometric security option to unlock the phone.

For cameras, both devices feature an updated 12-megapixel main lens, with a faster aperture that should lead to better motion capture.

A new video stabilization mode dubbed "action mode," is designed to keep your content smooth even when recording video while moving around.

Both handsets have a 12-megapixel sensor in the front camera which can produce crisp images in low light.

Prices and features of iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max

The iPhone 14 Pro will start at $999, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $1,099. Both will be available for pre-order on September 9 and available in stores on September 16.

In India, the price of iPhone 14 Pro is set at Rs. 1,29,900, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max will cost Rs. 1,39,900.

It will come out in four colour options—Deep Purple, Gold, Silver, and Space Black colour options.

With regards to hardware, Pro models surgical-grade stainless steel which is said to be abrasion and corrosion-resistant. Both handsets come with Ceramic Shield front cover touted to be tougher than any smartphone glass.

The iPhone 14 Pro comes with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR Always-On OLED display with Apple's ProMotion refresh rate feature.

Moreover, the Pro models can scale as low as 1Hz in order to provide a combination of smoother motion and power-efficient system.

But the most poignant difference between the pro and non-pro models is the hole-punch in the screen.

Apple has introduced a pill-shaped hole-punch cutout in place of the famous trend-setting notch.

It is calling it Dynamic Island, an "interactive space" that expands for notifications alongside other information such as music player, calling interface, Maps, among others.

The tech company says that the feature works with third-party apps.

Both hands pack Apple's new in-house A16 Bionic SoC which is said to be the most powerful chip in a smartphone. It has two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores.

According to Apple, the new 6-core CPU is claimed to be up to 40 percent faster than the competition. The A16 Bionic SoC also features an accelerated 5-core GPU with a claimed 50 percent more memory bandwidth and a new 16-core Neural Engine capable of nearly 17 trillion operations per second.

The most major boost up is in the camera department. Both models have a new 48-megapixel main camera with second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilisation and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, f/2.8 aperture lens and optical image stabilisation.

The third is a 12-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture ultra-wide angle lens that has 120-degree field-of-view.

The quad-pixel sensor combines four pixels into one pixel for maximum light intake. It also enables a 2x Telephoto option and the new machine learning model allows the iPhone 14 Pro to shoot ProRAW.

Both handsets also have Photonic Engine which is said to offer a better low-light performance — up to 2x on the main camera, up to 3x on the ultra wide camera, up to 2x on the telephoto camera, and up to 2x on the TrueDepth front camera that has 12-megapixel sensor and f/1.9 aperture lens.
