The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT) has recently developed BharOS which is set to benefit 100 crore (one billion) smartphone users across the country by offering them a more secure and private mobile operating system. While Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS continue to dominate the mobile operating system sector, which is the core interface of a smartphone, the new indigenously developed software could potentially challenge the former.

What is BharOS?

The Indian government-funded project, BharOS is an AOSP (Android Open Source Project) based operating system. Unlike Android, it does not have default Google apps or services, which implies that users will not be forced to opt for applications that they are unfamiliar with or do not trust.

Developed by the IIT-Madras incubated non-profit JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops) the free and open-source operating system (OS) will be used in government and public systems. This was in line with the project’s aim to reduce the reliance on foreign OS in smartphones and contribute significantly to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.

Is it different from Android?

In terms of technicalities, it is quite similar to the Android OS but without any Google services which let users decide which apps they wish to install on their device. In fact, it is based on AOSP therefore despite being known as an indigenous operating system it essentially has one key difference which is its No Default Apps (NDA) feature. The institute claims that it will give users more control, freedom, and flexibility to choose apps that cater to their needs.

Additionally, the developers have said that it is better than both Android and iOS in terms of features and security as well as could offer better battery life for the device, reported the Indian Express. Similar to Android, the BharOS also offers “Native Over The Air” (NOTA) updates which means software updates will automatically get downloaded and installed on the device.

Privacy and security features

As mentioned earlier, privacy and security were among the main focus behind creating BharOS, in addition to NDA, the mobile operating system also gives its users access to trusted apps from company-specific Private App Store Services (PASS).

In a statement, the developers said, “A PASS provides access to a curated list of apps that have been thoroughly vetted and have met certain security and privacy standards of organisations. This means users can be confident that the apps they are installing are safe to use and have been checked for any potential security vulnerabilities or privacy concerns.”

Therefore, BharOS services are now reportedly being supplied to those users and organisations that handle sensitive information and data that require strong privacy and security requirements.

Can you install BharOS on your device?

Reports suggest that BharOS will be available on a range of devices including laptops, phones, as well as desktops, however, it is still being developed and its release date has not been announced yet. Furthermore, unlike Windows OS, a single build of BharOS cannot be installed on all Android phones, therefore, even after the wider roll-out might not be available for all devices. So far, it is reportedly said to be compatible with Google Pixel smartphones but there is no official confirmation by the developers.

BharOS: What we know so far about the current version

Notably, the current version of BharOS comes with third-party apps like DuckDuckGo and Signal as default browsers and messaging apps. Additionally, since there are no pre-installed apps and users can sideload any app of their choice which could potentially compromise the device’s security and make it vulnerable to hacking, noted a report by the Indian Express.

There is also no clarity on how a user can replace their current operating system with BharOS or if the developers will join hands with the OEM to launch the smartphone which supports the indigenously built mobile operating system. However, reports suggest that the developers are expected to collaborate with some smartphone manufacturers to launch cell phones with BharOS.

Biggest technological firms, Apple and Meta, which are known for giving the best perks and environment to their employees, failed to get a mention in the 100 Best Places to Work in 2023, listed by Glassdoor. This is the first time since 2009 that Apple failed to make its place in Glassdoor’s best places to work list besides Meta which was also consistently ranked in the list since 2011.

Both the companies, last year, were ranked in the middle, reported Bloomberg. The annual list released by Glassdoor is based on employees’ feedback about the company, at least 1,000 employees, that were submitted between October 19, 2021, to October 17, 2022.

Glassdoor’s lead economist Daniel Zhao, while speaking to Insider, said that this year’s ranking highlights common themes like communication, flexibility and transparency, and also indicates the perspectives of employees towards the economic outlook of the company.

"It's something that we get feedback on from employees because we know it's something that people care about and that's even more important at a time when the economy might be slowing down," said Zhao said.

"So I think this list is especially useful in that sense because we are considering how employees perceive their employers are doing,” he added.

"It becomes more important than ever for people to really understand the health of the company that they're going to, whether you're talking about financial health or cultural health," Zhao further stated. In the past year, Apple and Meta faced headwinds.

Meta rescinded job offers, stopped hiring and fired around 11,000 employees in 2022, the largest layoffs in the history of the company. Concerns were also expressed by the employees over the focus of Mark Zuckerberg on Metaverse, a world where AR and VR devices are used by people to connect in a digital universe.

In a similar way, hiring was frozen by Apple in 2022. Zhao, while speaking to Bloomberg, said that the company may have also fallen off the ranking because they pressured employees to return to the office.

While Apple and Meta were removed from the list, few tech companies continued to dominate the rankings, as Microsoft, LinkedIn, and Google reached the top 20.

"Yes, there are some companies that fell off the list. There are some tech companies that entered the list. It's just a reminder that during tough times, often we see a changing of the guard. There are older companies who might be stuck in their ways that tend to fall by the wayside, whereas new companies can challenge and rise to the top,” said Zhao.

Apple is also worried that touchscreen Macs could cannibalize iPad sales.

Registering acceleration and shift from China's geopolitical tensions on the rise; India has exported more than $2.5 billion worth of iPhones from the country in the period from April to December last year. This is twice the previous fiscal year's total.

Apple Inc. has exported more than $2.5 billion of iPhones from India from April to December, Bloomberg reported on Monday (January 9). The amount is almost twice the previous fiscal year’s total. The report also highlights how some of the Western tech companies are shifting from China when it comes to production. Apple is among other big names that are exploring alternatives to China.

Reports previously revealed that China was the primary location of about 44-47 per cent of Apple suppliers' production sites until 2019. Now the scenario is changing gradually, especially after simmering tensions between the United States and China.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the Bloomberg report noted that Foxconn Technology Group and Wistron Corp have each "shipped more than $1 billion of Apple's marquee devices abroad in the first nine months of the fiscal year ending March 2023".

People, who requested not to be identified, also revealed private information and told the news agency Bloomberg that Pegatron Corp. is on track to move about $500 million of the gadgets overseas by the end of January.

In a report published in Al Jazeera last month, it was mentioned that China was the primary location of about 44-47 per cent of Apple suppliers' production sites, but Beijing's share fell to 41 per cent in 2020. The report further mentioned that it further fell to 36 per cent in 2021.

Amid the shifting dynamics, JPMorgan has estimated Apple could make 25 per cent of all iPhones in India by 2025. Notably, Apple began assembling its latest iPhone models in India just last year, but the nation aspires to become a hub of production units, giving competition to China.

Australian regulator e-Safety Commissioner held Microsoft Corp and Apple Inc responsible for not taking appropriate measures to regulate child exploitation content available on their platform. The Internet Safety watchdog issued a report after it used new powers to get information about the methods being used by the tech giants.

On Thursday, the e-Safety Commissioner said that after legal demands were sent to some of the largest internet firms in the world requesting information, the responses received showed that proactive screening was not done by Apple and Microsoft for child abuse material in OneDrive and iCloud, which are their storage services.

In the information received, it was confirmed that no technology was used by the two firms to detect child sexual abuse’s live-streaming on video services Microsoft Teams and Skype, which fall under the ambit of Microsoft, as well as Apple’s FaceTime, the report published by the commissioner stated.

A spokesperson from Microsoft talked about the commitment of the company to combat the proliferation of abusive material but "as threats to children's safety continue to evolve and bad actors become more sophisticated in their tactics, we continue to challenge ourselves to adapt our response".

As per the commissioner, the information confirms the lack of implementation of child protection measures by the biggest tech firms and increases public pressure on them to be more vigilant.

Information was also sought from Meta Platforms Inc, which is the owner of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and from Snap Inc, owner of Snapchat.

In a statement, Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said that the overall responses were "alarming" and expressed her concern about "clearly inadequate and inconsistent use of widely available technology to detect child abuse material and grooming.”

Apple will soon allow alternative app stores on its devices. The move is part of Apple's sweeping overhaul aimed at complying with strict European Union requirements that will be implemented in 2024. The company is reportedly aiming for the changes to be ready as part of an update to next year’s iOS 17, which would be in line with the compliance requirements.

Apple's software engineering and services employees are reportedly engaged in a major push to open up "key elements of Apple's platforms", Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

What is Apple's play store-related overhaul all about?

Apple's customers will now be able to download third-party softwares to their iPhones and iPads without using the company's app store. This will mean a move away from Apple's restrictions related to downloading the apps only from its app store and the up to 30 per cent commission it imposes on payments.

Why is Apple allowing alternative app stores?

The move is in response to the European Union laws that aim to give a level-playing field for third-party developers. Regulators and software maker firms have complained in the past that Apple and Google, two of the world's biggest smartphone app store providers, overwhelmingly dominate their position as gatekeepers.

Where in the world users will be able to use alternative app stores?

Currently, the development is limited for the Apple users in Europe. However, if similar laws to give level-playing fields to all software maker firms are passed elsewhere in the world, it could be marked as a significant precedent.

Apple to allow third-party app stores in response to new EU laws

Canadian law enforcement has already linked Apple's AirTag with an increase in local car thefts last year. Numerous accounts of people discovering AirTags concealed in their possessions have appeared on social media in recent months.

Is Apple's AirTag 'stalker-proof'? Here's what two women revealed in latest lawsuit

Canadian law enforcement has already linked Apple's AirTag with an increase in local car thefts last year. Numerous accounts of people discovering AirTags concealed in their possessions have appeared on social media in recent months. One women, as per reports, said that she found the AirTag taped to her luggage. The apple AirTags price is not too much and one can easily get them from apple stores or online.

What does the latest lawsuit say?

The most recent accusation against Apple's AirTags, though, is that it was used by previous partners to follow women. Two women are suing Apple on the basis that AirTags were used to stalk them, despite the fact that the firm claims it does not have a GPS tracking unit. In the lawsuit filed in San Francisco, the two women claim that their previous partners utilised the AirTags to locate them. They contend as well that AirTags have been connected to the killings of women in Akron, Ohio, and Indianapolis this year.

Moreover, saying that with Apple's alleged negligence for AirTags they are "at danger" of being stalked, the two women sought unspecified damages in Monday's complaint. Lauren Hughes, one of the plaintiffs in the complaint filed on Monday, said her ex-boyfriend discovered her new location, where she moved to avoid him, by putting an AirTag in her car's wheel well.

How has Apple responded so far?

Apple has previously claimed that many safeguards are built into its AirTags to stop unauthorised tracking. Before releasing AirTags, Apple was well aware that they may be misused for illegal purposes however the company said that the gadget is meant to monitor objects, not people. "Unwanted tracking has long been a societal problem, and we took this concern seriously in the design of AirTag. It’s why the Find My network is built with privacy in mind, uses end-to-end encryption, and why we innovated with the first-ever proactive system to alert you of unwanted tracking," said Apple in February while giving out an update on AirTag.

How do AirTags function?

The gadgets transmit a Bluetooth signal that Apple's Find My Network can pick up on. The business claims to have developed a number of protections to prevent the tracking of individuals. When apart from an owner for a while, AirTags emit a beeping sound. Moreover, a notification should show on their phone warning them, if an AirTag is discovered travelling with someone it is not registered with.

Other voices

Since AirTag's release in April of last year, Apple said, people have written in to tell endless tales of how AirTag helped them reconnect with the things they cherish. "Thanks to AirTag and the Find My app, a customer who lost his wallet on the subway was able to track it down at a station across town. With the help of an AirTag placed inside a medical kit, a parent whose child lost critical medicine on the bus was later able to find it," said Apple sharing the stories.

Other voices Since AirTag's release in April of last year, Apple said, people have written in to tell endless tales of how AirTag helped them reconnect with the things they cherish. "Thanks to AirTag and the Find My app, a customer who lost his wallet on the subway was able to track it down at a station across town. With the help of an AirTag placed inside a medical kit, a parent whose child lost critical medicine on the bus was later able to find it," said Apple sharing the stories.

In a blog post published on Friday (December 2), Google underlined reasons to switch to RCS (or Rich Communication Services). The tech firm also mocked Apple for still not offering an RCS messaging standard. In the blog post titled "Happy birthday and farewell, SMS! It's time for RCS", Google targeted Apple on the 30th anniversary of the short message service. The first SMS message was sent on December 3, 1992. For the unversed, RCS is a communication protocol between mobile-telephone carriers and between phone and carrier. The service aims to replace SMS messages with a more robust text-messaging system that supports in-call multimedia transmission and phonebook polling (for service discovery). It is part of the broader IP Multimedia Subsystem. The company also calls out Apple for not implementing it. The blog post added that most of the mobile world is using RCS, but "there is one company that's dragging its heels". It added: "But after 30 years of SMS texting, it's truly time." × ALSO READ | Apple tweaks AirDrop feature on iPhones in China after "bridge man" protests against Xi Jinping The post authored by Neena Budhiraja, the Group Product Manager at Messages by Google, mentioned: "All of the major mobile carriers and manufacturers have adopted RCS as the standard — except for Apple." Budhiraja noted that Apple refuses to adopt RCS and continues to rely on SMS when people with iPhones message people with Android phones, which means their texting is "stuck in the 1990s". The post further read that hopefully, Apple "can #GetTheMessage so we don't have to keep waiting to remove the whole 'green-versus-blue bubble' thing." Google also highlighted three big reasons why the whole industry should get behind RCS, which are: Security is front and centre. It upgrades the conversation. It’s the industry’s modern standard. Foxconn employees will receive CNY500 after referring a new recruit if the referred person works in the company for 15 days. They will be given another CNY500 if the recruit continues to work for the company for a month, as per a message forwarded on messaging app WeChat.

Foxconn apologised last month for facing a "technical glitch" in making payments after protests broke out in the factory in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou over overdue pay and Covid restrictions.
