Cook is in Beijing to attend the China Development Forum, a government-organised event being held again in full force after the country ended its COVID controls late last year.

Apple CEO praises China's innovation, long history of cooperation on Beijing visit

Amid heightened tensions between US-China, Apple CEO Tim Cook visited Beijing last week and praised the country for its innovation and long ties with the US. This was Cook's first visit to China since 2019. However, given the frosty relations between US and China, the visit's timing has raised a few eyebrows. The Apple boss was in the country to register his presence at the government-organised China Development Forum. "Innovation is developing rapidly in China and I believe it will further accelerate," Cook was quoted as saying by Chinese state media. “We have a very large supply chain in China. We also have a thriving App Store,” he added. Prior to attending the forum, Cook posted a picture of himself with the customers and staff at the Apple store in the shopping district of Sanlitun on Weibo - China's Twitter-like social media platform. With China Unicom, the country's third-largest wireless network operator announcing it expects to launch 6G technology by 2025, some experts are of the view that Apple is aiming to appease Beijing through Cook's visit and his words of appreciation. China is home to the world's largest internet user population and has been the biggest smartphone market for ages. Thus, despite the bitterness in US-China relations, Cook & Co. cannot afford to lose favour from Xi Jinping's authoritarian regime. Apple supplier Pegatron veers away from China, in talks to open second unit in India

American technology giant Apple is seeking changes in India's labour laws as part of its efforts to expand local production. According to a report by the news agency Bloomberg on Tuesday (March 21), regional governments are yielding to Apple's request as they are eager to snatch the iPhone assembly from China. Speaking to Bloomberg, sources said that the Southern state of Tamil Nadu, where Apple's top supplier Foxconn Technology Group operates India’s largest iPhone plant, is considering passing new rules that will make factory shifts more flexible.

The sources said that executives from Apple and Indian Cellular and Electronics Association lobby group, which represents the company as well as its suppliers like Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron, met with Tamil Nadu government officials over six months to push for the reforms. They added that the changes would bring local working hours on par with the iPhone factories in China.

The above moves are part of Apple's effort to shift more production away from China to countries including India. Bloomberg reported that the suggested changes include allowing factories to have two shifts of 12 hours each, instead of the previous three shifts where each shift was for eight hours.

The report said that local officials are keen to attract the business and jobs that Apple represents. It added that the suggested changes could also encourage more women to work in factories.

Labour reforms in India are rare and the country's willingness to accommodate Apple shows how badly it wants to become an electronics manufacturing hub. The sources also told the news agency on Tuesday that Apple and its suppliers are in talks to build large working women’s hostels in and around factory complexes, which would reduce travel time.

The ICEA lobby group said that the above reforms are overdue and at the heart of Make in India's policy objectives. “It helps bring more women with safety and comfort into the work environment like never before,” the ICEA added.

The Indian government is working on a draft proposal that could force smartphone makers to remove apps which come pre-installed on new phones that cannot be deleted.

Moreover, the government is also considering imposing mandatory screening of every major operating system update before it is made available to consumers, Reuters reported citing a government document.

The new rules, once implemented, could lead to massive losses in business from pre-installed apps for major firms like Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Apple, and could delay the launch of smartphones in the country.

The move comes as the Information and Technology (IT) ministry has raised security concerns over spying and abuse of Indian users’ data, Reuters reported citing a government official.

"Pre-installed apps can be a weak security point and we want to ensure no foreign nations, including China, are exploiting it. It's a matter of national security," the official was quoted as saying.

Apple reported record revenue in India in the last fiscal quarter. Now the tech giant plans to boost its focus on India by making it a separate sales region and reshuffling the management structure. Molly Gambhir reports.

Here we bring you a quick round-up of top headlines - Foxconn is considering a major expansion in India, including possibly assembling millions more iPhones and setting up new production sites as it seeks to further diversify beyond China.

The India Story | Foxconn's plans for India go beyond Apple

Apple is reorganising the management of its international businesses to give more focus on India, which has become an important market for the company. This marks the first time that India will be its own sales region at Apple, highlighting the nation's growing significance.

Apple Prioritizes India with Management Reshuffle

Apple is changing the way it runs its international businesses, which shows how important India is becoming in the world and how much the company is focusing on the country. This will be the first time that India becomes Apple's own sales region, which has seen demand surge, giving the Asian nation increased prominence inside the tech giant. The shift will result in India becoming its own sales region at Apple, according to a report. Media reports also say Apple is making the change after its vice president in charge of India, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, East Europe, and Africa - Hugues Asseman, recently retired. Since he is leaving, the company that makes the iPhone is promoting its head of India, who used to work for Asseman. The executive, Ashish Chowdhary, will now report directly to Michael Fenger, Apple’s head of product sales. Fenger and Doug Beck, both reporting to Apple CEO Tim Cook, are in charge of the company's international and domestic sales departments, respectively. Apple's organisational structure combines hierarchical elements with those based on functions and product lines. Senior VPs of divisions and product managers no longer have to ask the CEO for permission before taking action. The development comes on the heels of news of record revenue registered by Apple in India last quarter, even as its total sales slipped five per cent. Apple has created an online store to serve the region and is planning to open its retail outlets in the country later this year. In the last earnings call, chief executive officer Tim Cook said the company is putting "a lot of emphasis on the market" and compared the current state of its work in India to its early years in China. Read more: Apple to bring Chinese suppliers to boost production in India In addition to serving as a sales engine for Apple, India is also becoming more critical to the company’s product development. Key suppliers are moving to the region, and Apple is working with manufacturing partner Hon Hai Precision Industry, also known as Foxconn, to set up new iPhone production facilities in the country. The new management at Apple will change how the company is structured internally but won't change how the company reports regional sales in its publicly available financials. Making a re-entry into the social media arena, Twitter's former CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey launched his platform Bluesky, an alternative to Twitter. Currently, the application is in the testing phase and can be searched on the Apple App Store.

According to a report published by TechCrunch, currently, the micro-blogging platform Bluesky is in invite-only beta and will soon see a public launch.

The iOS app was first made available by its creators on February 17 and since then has been installed around 2,000 times in the testing phase, as per app intelligence firm data.ai.

The user interface of Bluesky has been kept simple and the blueness of Twitter has been retained. Users have been given 256 characters to create a post, which includes photos by just clicking on the app's plus button.

In the micro-blogging site Twitter, when users create a post they are asked “What's happening?" whereas, in Bluesky, the message that pops up is “What’s up?".

A massive fire broke out at Foxlink’s manufacturing unit in India’s southern Andhra Pradesh state. No casualties were reported.

The Taiwanese-based manufacturer, part of Cheng Uei Precision Industry Co Ltd, has halted production of cables for iPhone chargers. The factory opened in 2020.

The blaze was reported on Monday afternoon and damaged nearly 50 per cent of the machinery at the factory, said J Ramanaiah, who leads the Fire Services Department for Tirupati district in the state, reports Reuters news agency.

Around 750 people working at the unit in Jinkalamitta village, Tirupati district, were able to escape uninjured, police said.

Though the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the blaze spread rapidly due to fibre, sheets, and sponge being stocked at the facility.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) A Ramachandra said that the fire was confined to one shed due to the timely arrival of fire brigades.

Apple secretly working on new innovations

American tech giant Apple Inc is researching how to add a colour change function to the Apple Watch band so that it matches the wearers' outfit. According to a report by AppleInsider on Tuesday (February 21), Apple has been granted a patent for the colour-changing band. Rather than buying different watch bands to match different clothes, "Watch Band With Adjustable Colour" proposes that users buy just one, and it changes colour.

According to the patent, Apple Watch users may desire the ability to customise their watch bands for variety and style. "For example, a user may desire a watch band of a particular colour based on the user's selection of clothing, other wearable articles, environment, or another preference," the patent said.

"Some existing watches offer users the ability to remove and change watch bands for customisation. However, this requires the user to have a separate watch band for each of the colours or colour combinations that are desired," it further said.

According to the AppleInsider report, the patent describes the idea by referring to watch bands with electrochromic features, meaning that an applied voltage can cause a variety of colours and colour combinations to be displayed by a single band.

And while the patent attempts to describe every possible use of its core idea, the central examples revolve around watch bands that are made from a fabric which is itself woven from filaments. Apple said in its patent that some or all of the filaments can include electrochromic features. Giving an example, the tech giant said one or more of the filaments can include a conductor and an electrochromic layer.

The layer can be electrically connected to the conductor so that voltage applied to the conductor is communicated to it, said Apple adding the electrochromic layer can include a polymer layer which can react, in the presence of an applied voltage, to change its colour.

"The colour selections can be made and adjusted without removing and exchanging the watch band," the patent said. Also, a variety of colours can be displayed at different times without requiring different watch bands for each colour or colour combination, it added.

As Covid lockdowns and increasing geopolitical tension have strained the crucial supply chains of Apple in China and the company is now focusing on securing the supply chain, India is emerging as a potential alternative to the second largest economy of the world.

Last month, India's Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal had said that the company is planning to increase its production in the country to a quarter of its total manufacture.

Goyal said that Apple is already manufacturing 5 per cent to 7 per cent of its products in India. “If I am not mistaken, they are targeting to go up to 25 per cent of their manufacturing,” he stated while speaking at an event.

Damus, one of the Twitter alternatives, has been prohibited in mainland China due to worries that the app contains content that is illegal in the country. The application launched in the Apple's AppStore on February 1 after many rejections. The smartphone app's user base had soared past 45,000 within 24 hours after its introduction, making it China's second-most popular social network.

By banning the app from the China App Store, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has taken action to slow down its expansion. The CAC asserted that the Damus app contains material that is forbidden in China. As per CAC, Damus violates “the provisions of the security assessment of internet-based information services with an attribute or public opinion or capable of social mobilization.”

The software is built on top of Nostr, a decentralised social networking system backed by Jack Dorsey. The Nostr-based social app was created to do away with the requirement of revealing people’s real identities and allow users total control over their data and content. The Damus application will not be accessible or downloadable to users in mainland China as a result of the restriction. However, it will be accessible in other nations' app stores.

Decentralisation refers to the absence of a central authority that controls who may use the platform and what they can say. Since Apple needs services to have a system for detecting objectionable content, this first made Damus' approval process challenging. However, Damus finally figured out means to get listed in Apple's App Store on February 1.

The app's brief launch in China, where information is strictly regulated by the government, is undoubtedly due to its decentralised structure. All social networks functioning lawfully in China have reportedly built-in censoring mechanisms to remove illicit content or information that has been forbidden by the authorities.
