While the tech world seems to have been shaken up with the arrival of ChatGPT—a chatbot developed by OpenAI—Apple co-founder and tech wizard Steve Wozniak has expressed scepticism over the artificial intelligence’s capabilities.

During a recent discussion with CNBC host Andrew Ross Sorkin on February 8, Wozniak pointed out one of the key qualities that differentiate technology from humans.

He said that while "ChatGPT is kind of impressive" and "useful to humans," it has the potential to make some serious errors.

"I spent an entire lifetime really studying the brain, the computer. The computer will never equal the brain. I was very negative at first on any human-made technology being equivalent to nature. So it'll never be equal," Wozniak said.

"When a machine could beat a human at chess, we said the same sort of things," Wozniak said. "Oh my gosh, it's so smart, you know, but it's just following different methods than a brain follows.

However, its dependence on China was tested last year after the zero-Covid policy in Beijing dramatically hit the supplies.

While Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS continue to dominate the mobile operating system sector, which is the core interface of a smartphone, the new indigenously developed software could potentially challenge the former.&nbsp;

What is BharOS?

The Indian government-funded project, BharOS is an AOSP (Android Open Source Project) based operating system. Unlike Android, it does not have default Google apps or services, which implies that users will not be forced to opt for applications that they are unfamiliar with or do not trust.&nbsp;

Developed by the IIT-Madras incubated non-profit JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops) the free and open-source operating system (OS) will be used in government and public systems. This was in line with the project’s aim to reduce the reliance on foreign OS in smartphones and contribute significantly to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.&nbsp;

In terms of technicalities, it is quite similar to the Android OS but without any Google services which let users decide which apps they wish to install on their device. In fact, it is based on AOSP therefore despite being known as an indigenous operating system it essentially has one key difference which is its No Default Apps (NDA) feature. The institute claims that it will give users more control, freedom, and flexibility to choose apps that cater to their needs.&nbsp;

Additionally, the developers have said that it is better than both Android and iOS in terms of features and security as well as could offer better battery life for the device, reported the Indian Express. Similar to Android, the BharOS also offers “Native Over The Air” (NOTA) updates which means software updates will automatically get downloaded and installed on the device.&nbsp;

Privacy and security features&nbsp;

As mentioned earlier, privacy and security were among the main focus behind creating BharOS, in addition to NDA, the mobile operating system also gives its users access to trusted apps from company-specific Private App Store Services (PASS).&nbsp;

In a statement, the developers said, “A PASS provides access to a curated list of apps that have been thoroughly vetted and have met certain security and privacy standards of organisations. This means users can be confident that the apps they are installing are safe to use and have been checked for any potential security vulnerabilities or privacy concerns.”&nbsp;

Reports suggest that BharOS will be available on a range of devices including laptops, phones, as well as desktops, however, it is still being developed and its release date has not been announced yet. Furthermore, unlike Windows OS, a single build of BharOS cannot be installed on all Android phones, therefore, even after the wider roll-out might not be available for all devices. So far, it is reportedly said to be compatible with Google Pixel smartphones but there is no official confirmation by the developers.&nbsp;

Both the companies, last year, were ranked in the middle, reported Bloomberg. The annual list released by Glassdoor is based on employees’ feedback about the company, at least 1,000 employees, that were submitted between October 19, 2021, to October 17, 2022.

Glassdoor’s lead economist Daniel Zhao, while speaking to Insider, said that this year’s ranking highlights common themes like communication, flexibility and transparency, and also indicates the perspectives of employees towards the economic outlook&nbsp;of the company.

"So I think this list is especially useful in that sense because we are considering how employees perceive their employers are doing,” he added.

"It becomes more important than ever for people to really understand the health of the company that they're going to, whether you're talking about financial health or cultural health," Zhao further stated. In the past year, Apple and Meta faced headwinds.

Meta rescinded job offers, stopped hiring and fired around 11,000 employees in 2022, the largest layoffs in the history of the company. Concerns were also expressed by the employees over the focus of Mark Zuckerberg on Metaverse, a world where AR and VR devices are used by people to connect in a digital universe.

People, who requested not to be identified, also revealed private information and told the news agency Bloomberg that Pegatron Corp. is on track to move about $500 million of the gadgets overseas by the end of January.&nbsp;

In a report published in Al Jazeera last month, it was mentioned that China was the primary location of about 44-47 per cent of Apple suppliers' production sites, but Beijing's share fell to 41 per cent in 2020. The report further mentioned that it further fell to 36 per cent in 2021.&nbsp;

Starting from March 01, all old iPhones before 2022 will see their battery replacements charge increased by $20.

These increased battery prices will also apply to not just iPhones but also MacBooks, some iPads and a few international markets.

Like many tech companies, Apple has been hit by supply chain issues. Its manufacturing in China has taken a hit due to fresh wave of Covid infections in the only major economy combating such a crisis. On Tuesday (January 3), Apple's shares were down by nearly 4 per cent.

Nikkei reported on Monday that Apple had notified some of its manufacturers to make fewer parts of its popular products like the AirPods, Apple Watch and Macbooks.

"Apple has alerted us to lower orders for almost all product lines actually since the quarter ending December, partly because the demand is not that strong," a manager at an Apple supplier was quoted by Nikkei Asia.&nbsp;

"The supply chain in China is still trying to cope with the latest abrupt policy turns, which brought a shortage of laborers because of the sharp COVID surges."

Such reports have raised concern about demand for Apple products as well.&nbsp;

Apple is not the only&nbsp;company to suffer massive reduction in market capitalisation.

On Thursday, the e-Safety Commissioner said that after legal demands were sent to some of the largest internet firms in the world requesting information, the responses received showed that proactive screening was not done by Apple and Microsoft for child abuse material in OneDrive and iCloud, which are their storage services.

In the information received, it was confirmed that no technology was used by the two firms to detect child sexual abuse’s live-streaming on video services Microsoft Teams and Skype, which fall under the ambit of Microsoft, as well as Apple’s FaceTime, the report published by the commissioner stated.

A spokesperson from Microsoft talked about the commitment of the company to combat the proliferation of abusive material but "as threats to children's safety continue to evolve and bad actors become more sophisticated in their tactics, we continue to challenge ourselves to adapt our response".

As per the commissioner, the information confirms the lack of implementation of child protection measures by the biggest tech firms and increases public pressure on them to be more vigilant.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Information was also sought from Meta Platforms Inc, which is the owner of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and from Snap Inc, owner of Snapchat.

In a statement, Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said that the overall responses were "alarming" and expressed her concern about "clearly inadequate and inconsistent use of widely available technology to detect child abuse material and grooming.”
