Around 95 of the company's which is housed in the posh Penn Square Mall, cast ballots in an election on Friday night, and the results were tabulated by the US National Labor Relations Board. The Communications Workers of America was elected by the employees, making it the second of Apple's around 270 US stores to unionise.

Following a vote by employees at a Maryland retailer to join the International Association of Machinists in June, the CWA won. This is one of several historic victories this year at formerly union-free US businesses.

In addition to Starbucks Corp., labour organisers have also made headway at Amazon.com Inc., Trader Joe's, and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. The union's success at Starbucks has quickly gone from one early victory in Buffalo, New York, to hundreds more victories nationwide.

“We believe the open, direct and collaborative relationship we have with our valued team members is the best way to provide an excellent experience for our customers, and for our teams,” Apple said in a statement.

“We’re proud to provide our team members with strong compensation and exceptional benefits. Since 2018, we’ve increased our starting rates in the US by 45% and we’ve made many significant enhancements to our industry-leading benefits, including new educational and family support programs.”

Similar to the Machinists' triumph in Towson, Maryland, the Oklahoma vote may inspire Apple employees who have been secretly considering uniting elsewhere to act soon. The campaign's potential to go nationwide is highlighted by the fact that it was successful in a strongly Republican state with a unionisation rate that is only about half that of the US average.

A Samsung India spokesperson said the company would roll out updates across all its 5G devices by mid-November.

Ministry of electronics and IT officials held a meeting on Wednesday dedicated to 5G adoption, which executives from&nbsp;Apple, Samsung, Vivo and Xiaomi, and telecom operators Reliance, Airtel and Vodafone Idea attended.

The agenda includes "prioritising" the release of software upgrades for supporting the high-speed network, the notice for the closed-door meeting stated.

While telecom players and smartphone makers have been holding discussions with each other, ironing out compatibility issues between the specific 5G technology of telecom companies in India and phone software is taking time, one of the industry sources said.

A Google spokesperson said on Wednesday: "Pixel 7, 7 Pro and Pixel 6a are 5G capable devices. We are actively working with the Indian carriers to enable functionality at the earliest."

However, in the next few weeks, several issues have been reported with these specs. The latest as per a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report casts doubt on the efficacy of the safety feature which is supposed to help emergency services reach users ASAP in case of an accident or crash.

The report details a recent "roller coaster ride" of an incident at an amusement park in Cincinnati.&nbsp;

A woman's iPhone 14 alerted the authorities of a crash as she enjoyed a ride. The phone's new car-crash detection was triggered as she "enjoyed getting hoisted 109 feet in the air and whipped around at over 50 mph".

The phone placed a 911 call to the Warren County Communications Center with an automated voice message which said “The owner of this iPhone was in a severe car crash and is not responding to their phone.”

It also picked up the background audio from the amusement park; hoots, cheers, music and adrenaline-fueled people having fun.

As per the 911 report, an emergency response team was sent to the location but they couldn't locate any emergency. The iPhone user realised the whole thing and called the emergency services back to tell them that she is okay. Ironically she reassured them that she hasn't been in a car crash from the line for 'bumper cars'.

While the incident is in a certain way hilarious, it also raises the question of how dependable the feature is. There would be nothing funny about receiving an alert that your loved one has been in a crash, only to discover that they were having fun at a fair or amusement park and just forgot to answer their phone.

This is not to say that the emergency call is placed undetected by the user. The feature uses a combination of sensor data to assess a potential crash. If detected, it shows a message on the screen for ten seconds, following which a ten-second countdown happens, accompanied by an alarm.&nbsp;

Only after this countdown, emergency services are contacted. A message is also sent to your emergency contact.

However, as the incident demonstrates you sometimes forget to check your phone.

The false alarms can be scary and they will grow in number as more people buy the new model of iPhone. It has to be acknowledged that technology can make mistakes, for it the difference between a deadly crash and a thrilling ride might be non-existent.

In spite of that, there have already been multiple cases where the feature was literally a lifesaver, in one it alerted authorities to a deadly accident where a car crashed into a tree. The crash had no witnesses and without the alert, the user might have perished.

Even if scary or irritating this feature has saved lives and will continue to do so, one can only hope that Apple will soon launch an update fixing this "bug".

The original fine had been imposed by France's antitrust watchdog in 2020 for what it described as&nbsp;Apple's anti-competitive behaviour towards its distribution and retail network.

At the time, it was the biggest fine levied by the antitrust regulator, which said&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;imposed prices on retail premium resellers so that the prices were aligned with those charged by the California firm in its own shops, or on the internet.

The appeals court backed the antitrust watchdog's charge that&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;abused the retailers' economic dependency on the company but tossed the fixed-pricing charge, one of the two sources said.

It also reduced the time scope of the charge of an alleged restriction of the wholesalers' clientele, the same source said.

The court also decided to significantly lower the rate applied to calculate the overall fine, the source added.

The French antitrust authority had used a high rate in 2020 given the size and financial firepower of&nbsp;Apple, the source said.

Apple&nbsp;said it would appeal the decision. It did not mention the amount of the fine issued by the court.

"While the court correctly reversed part of the French Competition Authority's decision, we believe it should be overturned in full and plan to appeal," the US&nbsp;company said in a statement sent to Reuters.

"The decision relates to practices from more than a decade ago that even the (French authority) recognised are no longer in use."

A spokesperson for the appeals court declined to comment on the exact content of the decision but confirmed the court "partially confirmed" the antitrust watchdog's decision.

Apple to double iPhone exports from India by next year

After anticipating dwindling demands for new iPhone14 models, Apple has reportedly asked the suppliers to cut back on production this year.

The California-based tech behemoth is planning to reduce production by as many as six million units,&nbsp;Bloomberg reported quoting people familiar with the matter.

Now, the tech firm is looking to produce&nbsp;90 million handsets for the period, which would be roughly the same level as the last year and in line with Apple’s original forecast this summer.

&nbsp;The firm had previously told its suppliers to prepare for a 7 per cent increase in orders.

Moreover, the senators asked Haines to conduct a thorough investigation on the role YMTC plays in helping Chinese companies such as Huawei, which have been sanctioned by the White House.&nbsp;

Earlier, speaking to Financial Times, Apple remarked that&nbsp;it was “evaluating” sourcing from YMTC for some iPhones in China.

For years, US led the technology battle with China. However, the tips have recently scaled in Beijing's favour. As reported by WION, according to a&nbsp;study&nbsp;presented by Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), US could lose the tech competition to China if it does not take action on the 5G, AI, and microchip core fronts.&nbsp;

The reports said that short interest in Apple has surged to $18.4 billion, which exceeds Tesla's short interest of $17.4 billion.&nbsp;

After the surge, Apple in becomes the most heavily shorted US company by dollar amount. The title was held by Elon Musk's company for 864 days.&nbsp;

As of Wednesday, around 113 million Apple shares were sold short, which represents 0.7 per cent of Apple's shares publicly available.&nbsp;

On the other hand, around 57 million Tesla shares sold short which means about 2.2 per cent of Musk's float.&nbsp;

"Publishers are trying to present a value and hook customers for longer to cut down on acquisition costs," Adam Blacker, VP, Insights, said, IANS reported.&nbsp;

The tech giant, Apple, launched iOS 16 to make your devices more personal with some of the biggest updates to the Lock Screen, and messages, and also included some new tools in Mail.

Alphabet's Google and Meta Platforms have been fined tens of millions of dollars by South Korea for privacy law violations, authorities said on Wednesday. In a statement, the Personal Information Protection Commission said Google has been fined 69.2 billion won ($50 million) and Meta 30.8 billion won ($22 million).

The panel said that both the firms collected user information without telling them clearly about it or taking their consent for analysing behavioural information to infer their interests or use them for customised advertisements.

Both the companies displayed displeasure with the decision and said they have always been transparent and worked with clients in a legally compliant way.

"We’ve always demonstrated our commitment to making ongoing updates that give users control and transparency, while providing the most helpful products possible. We remain committed to engaging with the PIPC to protect the privacy of South Korean users."

A Meta spokesperson said, "While we respect the commission's decision, we are confident that we work with our clients in a legally compliant way that meets the processes required by local regulations. As such, we do not agree with the commission's decision, and will be open to all options including seeking a ruling from the court."

Meanwhile, Google suffered one of its biggest setbacks on Wednesday when a top European court fined it 4.125 billion euros ($4.13 billion) for using its Android mobile operating system to thwart rivals.

The unit of US tech giant Alphabet (GOOGL.O) had challenged an earlier ruling, but the decision was broadly upheld by the Europe's second-highest court in Wednesday's ruling and the fine was reduced only modestly from 4.34 billion euros.

Apple said, "It has been designed to replace passwords, passkeys use Touch ID or Face ID for biometric verification, and iCloud Keychain to sync across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV with end-to-end encryption."

While upgrading to a new iPhone or switching to an iOS ecosystem, a lot of factors come into play, the primary being the price. Unlike the Android phones which start at sub $200, iPhones are costly, even their most basic version costs $799.

Though the company touts iPhone 14 to be a superior upgrade to its predecessor, iPhone 13, not all the models are built on the same specification.

A closer look at the new lineup can offer a glimpse of the stark difference between the pro and non-pro models.

So, before you start crunching numbers or break out the credit cards to rush to buy it, here’s a guide as to why&nbsp;should skip the phone.

If you own an iPhone 13, then you can comfortably ignore iPhone 14, as the specifications of both phones are exactly the same.

For starters, both iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 have same processor—A15 Bionic Chip.

Though there is a minor difference, iPhone 14’s processor comes with 5-core GPU (found in iPhone 13 pro), iPhone 13 comes with 4-core GPU, offering slight improvements to overall battery life and performance.

Camera and Display

Both come with Super Retina XDR OLED and have 12MP main (f/1.5) and 12MP ultrawide (f/2.4) cameras.

Though there are a couple of differences which come down to some small hardware tweaks and improved software photography.

iPhone 14’s main sensor sports smaller 1.9-micron pixels and an f/1.5 aperture, which is the same as the iPhone 13 Pro. Meaning&nbsp;that it can take low light pictures with crisp detail.

Secondly, the 12MP selfie camera has been updated with an f/1.9 aperture, again the same as the iPhone 13 Pro, which allows for better low light photography.

Design

The iPhone 14 looks very similar to the iPhone 13. Both are made of glass and aluminum with glossy backs. The iPhone 14 has a Ceramic Shield on the front glass for added durability, just like the previous model.

Dimensions are almost identical, too. iPhone 14 is measuring in at 5.78 x 2.82 x 0.31 inches with a weight of 6.07 ounces, slightly lighter than iPhone 13 (6.10 ounces).

Battery

This time Apple has bumped up the battery for iPhone 14, but it is not a significant increase compared to iPhone 13.

The new phone comes up with 3,240mAh compared to its predecessor’s 3,279mAh.

Expectedly, the larger 14 Plus comes a far larger battery than that, with an up to 25 per cent increase in longevity over the iPhone 13.

Planning to upgrade to iPhone 14? Here’s why you should reconsider

India can emerge as a major manufacturing centre for iPhones in the near future. The Tata group is currently in talks with Wistron Corp to form a partnership for manufacturing iPhones in India. According to the company announcements, the first batch of products is expected by next quarter after Apple chose India as their new manufacturing choice in Asia in order to stop their reliance on China after the pandemic. While the average shipments of iPhones to India is somewhere near 370,000 units, experts believe that the manufacturing plant can result in India getting around 570,000 units in 2022. According to Reuters, it can come down to 2-3 months in the near future once the manufacturing plant is functional. Addati filed the complaint to the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) accusing Apple and Google of "completely inhibit(ing) competition by taking advantage of their monopoly in app stores to tie use of their own payment processing systems for in-app purchases." He further added that Google Play store and Apple store charge 15 per cent to 20 per cent commission which is unfair and has forced up prices for consumers. The former telecommunications head stated that he had taken the case to Mexico's competition regulator initially. However, after the body failed to act, he was forced to bring the complaint to IFT. "I have full confidence that (the IFT) will investigate and exercise its powers - in line with international best practices - so that these companies stop abusing their market power to the detriment of developers and consumers," said Addati. Akin to Mexico and Addati's complaint, the complainants in the UK also claimed that Apple forced developers to use its payment system for in-app purchases while gulping 30 per cent commission on such transactions. The last few weeks have been eventful for the big tech giants. As reported by WION, the Brazilian government on Tuesday levied a fine of $2.38 million on Apple and ordered the company to stop selling its iPhones without a battery charger in the South American country.
