Apple has highlighted a minor but significant new feature that allows a person to secure their iPhone from an abusive partner.Known as 'Safety Check,' it allows a user to rapidly revoke all permissions granted to another person on their phone.

This could involve accessing a person's whereabouts or passwords to numerous personal accounts. While giving access to these items may be beneficial in many situations, Apple has explicitly identified the risk it poses to someone living in an unsafe environment at home.

"Safety Check, a new privacy tool, can aid customers whose personal safety is threatened by domestic or intimate partner violence by rapidly revoking all access they've authorised to others,' said the company.&nbsp;

‘It includes an emergency reset that helps users easily sign out of iCloud on all their other devices, reset privacy permissions, and limit messaging to just the device in their hand.

‘It also helps users understand and manage which people and apps they’ve given access to.’

Users can use Safety Check to monitor app access and passwords, as well as find out who has their passwords and personal information. It will make it easier for people in abusive situations to terminate links with their abusive partners across devices. They can accomplish this by assessing and revoking access for specific individuals. Find My, location, data, contacts, and other apps fall under this category. You can also utilise the Emergency Reset function, which resets access for all individuals and apps on all of your iCloud-connected devices at once. You may also use this function to check your security settings.

Apple's iOS 16: iPhone 'Safety Check' feature to help people in abusive relationships

Nearly 15 years after the iPhone sparked the smartphone revolution, Apple is assembling the pieces for what it hopes will become its next business-altering device: a headset that blends the digital world with the real one.

The company has enlisted Hollywood directors such as Jon Favreau to develop video content for a headset that it is expected to ship next year, according to three people familiar with that work. Favreau, an executive producer of “Prehistoric Planet” on Apple TV+, is working to bring that show’s dinosaurs to life on the headset, which looks like a pair of ski goggles and aims to offer virtual- and augmented-reality experiences, these people said.

Separately, at its annual conference for developers this Monday, Apple plans to unveil software tools that would allow apps to add new camera and voice functionality, laying the groundwork for a hands-free interface that customers will eventually be able to navigate on the headset, according to two people familiar with the project and documents reviewed by The New York Times.

An Apple spokesperson, Trudy Muller, declined to comment on future projects. A spokesperson for Favreau could not comment.

The planned headset will thrust Apple into an emerging competition to define the future of mixed reality. Microsoft, Google and Facebook’s parent company, Meta, are in various stages of developing software and hardware to create environments where 3D digital images and the physical world coexist.

Last year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg dropped Facebook as his company’s name and committed it to building a concept known as the metaverse, where the online, virtual and real worlds coalesce in a new universe. He and others believe it could become the next wave of computing, succeeding the smartphone age dominated by Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android software, much as those platforms followed the decades of Windows and Macintosh.

“This is the next frontier,” said Carolina Milanesi, a technology analyst with Creative Strategies, a technology research firm. “For Apple, this is about a new computing experience and opportunity to engage consumers with a device and new experiences that build on what they’ve done with content.”

The mixed-reality work is expected to be overshadowed during the keynote of Apple’s conference Monday, which will largely be devoted to the company’s existing software systems. Apple may also announce a redesigned MacBook Air with slimmer borders around its display than current models and updated processors, analysts said.

Apple’s development of virtual-reality content and software tools is central to creating experiences that give its future headset purpose. Its last major new product, the Apple Watch, was launched with about 3,000 apps but struggled to take off because tech reviewers said few of those apps were useful. Similar shortcomings have dogged Meta’s Quest virtual-reality headset, which surpassed 10 million sales last year, because many view it as a gaming device.

From its original Macintosh to its iPad, Apple has pursued products that attract a broad swath of potential customers and have an array of uses. It sold an estimated 240 million iPhones last year, accounting for about half of its $366 billion in total sales. To make the headset worthwhile, analysts said, it will need to have utilities that transcend the niche world of video games.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been talking about the potential of augmented reality for years. In 2016, he told investors that the company was investing heavily in it and considered it a “great commercial opportunity.” Around that time, many employees on Apple’s campus were reading “Ready Player One,” a futuristic novel about virtual reality, and talking about the possibilities of creating Apple’s own mixed-reality world.

Apple hired an engineer from Dolby Technologies, Mike Rockwell, and tasked him with leading the effort. His early efforts to create an augmented-reality product were hobbled by weak computing power, two people familiar with the project said. Continuing challenges with its battery power have forced Apple to postpone its release until next year, those people said.

The augmented-reality initiative has been divisive inside Apple. At least two members of its industrial design team said they had left the company, in part, because they had some concerns about developing a product that might change the way people interact with one another. Such sensitivities have increased inside the company amid rising public concern about children’s screen time.

With Rockwell at the helm, the product would be one of the first to come out of Apple led by its engineering team rather than its co-founder Steve Jobs, who died in 2011, and its former design chief, Jony Ive, who left the company in 2019. The Apple Watch project was led by Ive and his designers, who defined how it looked, operated and was marketed.

Favreau's programming shows how Apple is trying to differentiate its product from Meta’s. It also illustrates how the company is tapping into the relationships it has cultivated in Hollywood since starting Apple TV+ in 2019.

“An amazing headset could give you a better experience than 80-inch TV,” said Matt Miesnieks, CEO of LivingCities.xyz, a startup working on metaverse technology.

The software tools from Apple extend a multiyear push to encourage developers to build augmented-reality apps. The company kicked off that effort in 2017 with ARKit, which allowed developers to use the iPhone’s camera and motion sensors to place digital objects in the real world and let people interact with them.

However, about 70% of Apple’s developers said they did not use that tool, according to a survey of more than 500 developers by Creative Strategies.

A toolkit that Apple is expected to introduce at the conference offers software developers new abilities to trigger shortcuts inside their apps using Siri and QR codes, interactions that will be leveraged in future headsets, a person familiar with the project said.

Apple to launch its search engine and compete with Google: Reports

Apple is never afraid to drop features from its devices. It has ditched ports on the MacBook even removed chargers from iPhone boxes and even dropped the headphone jack on the iPhone and this time it looks like they may be removing buttons from the MacBook.

Apple patent tech reveals new plans, no buttons for Apple devices?

Battered by Xi Jinping’s anti-Covid policy, Apple is looking to boost production outside China, reports said, adding that India and Vietnam are being seriously looked at for potential alternatives.

Over 90 per cent of Apple products like iPhones, iPads and MacBook laptops are manufactured in China by outside contractors.

With Apple’s being exposed to potential manufacturing snags due to China’s zero-Covid police, the tech behemoth is already in talks with some of its contract manufacturers to look for alternatives, the Wall Street Journal reported citing people involved in the discussion.

Nikkei Asia reported that the lockdowns in Shanghai and Kunshan have forced Apple to halt production at three suppliers, which could have a much more significant impact – especially the Pegatron shutdown.

Pegatron, which roughly makes 20 to 30 per cent of all iPhones, had said in April that operations at its two production sites in Shanghai and Kunshan have been suspended to comply with government regulations.

Similarly, MacBook maker Quanta and iPad assembler Compal are the two other suppliers who also had to shut to comply with the Covid guidelines.

In Shanghai, 31&nbsp;companies&nbsp;run production facilities that supply to Apple.

Moreover, the Shanghai lockdown made a huge dent in Apple’s revenue for the April-June quarter as the company has indicated up to $8 billion loss in sales.

Big slump: US stock markets lost more than $7 trillion this year

After surging oil prices propelled shares of the world's largest crude exporter to record highs, Saudi Aramco has surpassed Apple as the world's most valuable company, while a broader tech stock sell-off weighs on the iPhone manufacturer.

On Wednesday, the Saudi Arabian oil company's market capitalization was $2.426 trillion, slightly higher than Apple's $2.415 trillion.

It's the first time Saudi Aramco has reclaimed the top rank since 2020, and it comes after a year-long sell-off in technology stocks.

In early January, Apple became the first company to reach a market capitalization of $3 trillion, though its stock has fallen in recent months as investors reconsider the tech sector's lofty valuations in light of the Fed's policy reversal and concerns that inflation will weaken consumers' spending habits.

It has fared better than some large tech businesses, having dropped 19% since its January high. On Wednesday afternoon in New York, Apple shares were down 4.6 percent at $147.35, bringing their year-to-date loss to 17.1 percent and putting the stock at its lowest level since November.

While Apple recently had its third-best quarter in terms of revenue, CEO Tim Cook predicted that supply bottlenecks and lockdowns in China will cost the business up to $8 billion this quarter.

Given that Apple was formed in a garage in California in 1976 and Saudi Aramco is a state-backed colossus with just a tiny proportion of freely floating shares, several analysts dispute the value of comparing the two companies.

Saudi Aramco raised a record $25.6 billion in 2019 when the government, which still controls 94% of the firm, listed 1.5 percent of its shares in the world's largest ever initial public offering.

The government transferred another 4% of its stock to Saudi Arabia's national wealth fund in February.

Saudi Aramco's shares, which are traded on the Riyadh Stock Exchange, have climbed 27% since the beginning of the year to a new high of 46 riyals ($12.26).

Apple faces a possible hefty fine and may have to open its mobile payment system to competitors after EU antitrust regulators charged the iPhone maker with restricting rivals' access to its technology used for mobile wallets.

EU slams Apple for restricting pay system access

The European Union on Monday accused Apple of blocking its rivals from its "tap-as-you-go" payment system.

In a move seen as a new front in the battle on mobile payment, the European Union said the phone giant "excluded others from the game" as it "unfairly shielded its Apple Pay wallets from competition".

The block emphasised that it is a "preliminary conclusion" and proved that it would mean the US company "abused" its position in the market which is illegal.

The European Commission accused iPhone of&nbsp;blocking competitors from&nbsp;procuring&nbsp;hardware and software while trying to "benefit" Apple Pay as it restricted access to its NFC chip technology.

"We have indications that Apple restricted third-party access to key technology necessary to develop rival mobile wallet solutions on Apple's devices," EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said.

'Apple unfairly shielded its pay wallets': EU's antitrust case

Apple has revealed its financial results for the first quarter of 2022 and it becomes the world's first company to hit the $3 trillion market valuation. CEO Tim Cook has warned that sales could take a hit of up to $8 billion.

Apple sees bigger supply problems after strong start to the year

Apple&nbsp;Inc on Thursday forecast bigger problems as COVID-19 lockdowns snarl production and demand in China, the war in Ukraine dents sales and growth slows in services, which the iPhone maker sees as its engine for expansion.

Shares were down 2.2 per cent&nbsp;in late trade after executives laid out their glum outlook on a conference call. The news outweighed record profit and sales for&nbsp;Apple's fiscal second quarter, which ended in March.

Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri warned in an interview that the war in Ukraine, which led&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;to stop sales in Russia, would cut sales more deeply in the fiscal third quarter.

He told analysts on the call that supply-chain issues would hurt sales in the quarter by $4 billion to $8 billion, "substantially larger" than the hit in the second quarter.

Supply problems were focused on a corridor in Shanghai, China and reflected covid&nbsp;disruptions and chip shortages, he added. The pandemic was also affecting demand in China, he said.

Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said that almost all of the Chinese factories doing final assembly of&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;products had restarted after recent covid&nbsp;shutdowns, but the company is not forecasting when the chips shortage, mostly affecting older products, would end.

Cook said he hoped covid&nbsp;issues would be "transitory" and "get better over time."

At least one analyst said the outlook lacked clarity.

"We were all looking for just better guidance on what is really going on over there (China) ... and that didn't come out," said Louis Navellier, chief investment officer for Navellier &amp; Associates.

Kim Caughey Forrest, Chief Investment Officer at Bokeh Capital Partners, said that ongoing demand remained a big question, despite&nbsp;Apple's management of supply chain in the March quarter.

Indeed, other high-profile tech companies also raised concerns. Amazon on Thursday posted a disappointing outlook as it was swamped by higher costs, sending its shares down 9 per cent&nbsp;after the close, and Intel Corp forecast a bleak quarter based on supply chain issues, and its stock fell 4 per cent.

Both companies, along with&nbsp;Apple, are part of the broader Nasdaq index, which has fallen nearly 19% this year as rising inflation drives investors elsewhere.

March quarter strength&nbsp;

Apple's overall fiscal second-quarter revenue was $97.3 billion, up 8.6 per cent&nbsp;from last year and higher than analysts' average estimate of $93.89 billion, according to Refinitiv data.

Worldwide phone sales revenue was $50.6 billion, a 5.5 per cent&nbsp;increase from a year ago, and services sales rose 17 per cent&nbsp;to $19.8 billion, both ahead of analyst average forecasts.

However, Maestri said that services growth would decelerate from the March quarter, while remaining in double-digits. He cited several factors, including more unfavorable currency exchange rates.

Total profit was $25 billion, or $1.52 per share and easily topped analysts' expectations of $23.2 billion and $1.43.

Apple&nbsp;also raised its dividend 5 per cent&nbsp;to $0.23 per share and the board approved a buyback for an added $90 billion in shares.

Investors have been bracing for drops in consumer spending on tech gadgets and services as the war in Ukraine and other factors drive up the cost of oil, food and other staples.

Cook shrugged off an analyst question on inflation and consumers.

"We're monitoring that closely. But right now, our main focus, frankly speaking, is on the supply side," he said.

Asked about rising inflation, Maestri said demand, particularly for iPhones, had been higher than the company had anticipated at the start of the quarter. But he noted inflation was affecting expenses.

Apple&nbsp;said iPad sales fell 2 per cent&nbsp;to $7.65 billion due to supply-chain constraints, while revenue from Mac computers, also facing supply-chain issues, rose 14.7 per cent&nbsp;to $10.4 billion.

Sales of wearables, home speakers and accessories rose 12 per cent&nbsp;to $8.8 billion, and was the only unit to miss Wall Street targets. Maestri said Watch and AirPods sold well, and attributed the miss to seasonal variability in demand for other accessories.

Apple&nbsp;said it now has 825 million paying subscribers across its at least seven subscription offerings, up by 40 million from 785 million last quarter. Its growth comes as rivals such as Netflix Inc report subscriber losses.

Workers at Apple's Grand Central Station store announced Monday they are organizing to establish a union, in what would be a first at one of the tech giant's retail locations in the United States.

The effort, calling itself "Fruit Stand Workers United," aims to garner signatures from at least 30 per cent of the New York store, the minimum needed to qualify for a unionization election.

The campaign is connected to Workers United, an affiliate of the national Service Employees International Union, which was established in 2009 by several earlier unions.&nbsp;

Workers United confirmed its involvement.

"Like so many recent campaigns, this has been worker-driven, and worker led," Workers United said in an email. "We recognize the tremendous bravery and courage these workers have taken to stand up for their rights, and we will support them every step of the way."

Organizers of the Grand Central campaign described themselves as working in "extraordinary times with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and once-in-a-generation consumer price inflation," though their website did not disclose the name of staff members leading the effort.

"Grand Central is an extraordinary store with unique working conditions that make a union necessary to ensure our team has the best possible standards of living," the workers said on the campaign website for the prospective union.

The Apple effort comes as a Starbucks unionization drive backed by Workers United has spread nationally after election victories last year in New York.&nbsp;

Amazon is also facing a growing challenge from unions after an upstart campaign won an election at a warehouse in nearby Staten Island earlier this month. A vote at a second Staten Island Amazon site is scheduled for later in April.

On Monday, the National Labor Relations Board, which oversees union elections, indicated it received enough signatures from another Amazon warehouse to hold a vote in Bayonne, New Jersey at a site with about 200 workers.

Employees working in at least three other Apple stores are also attempting to organize, according to The Washington Post.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AFP.

Apple is facing the wrath of the public after it released the iOS15.4 update for iPhone that brought forth 37 new emoticons, including some gender-neutral ones.

Many were not pleased with the ‘pregnant man', and 'pregnant person’ emoticons as they appeared to be body-shaming men.

The users tore into Apple for their woke culture and asked them to roll back this update.

Apple is internally testing new models of the MacBook series with next-generation M2 chips as per a report published in Bloomberg.

The company's developer logs show that the US tech giant is using third-party apps for its testing.

It comes after Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company is trying to develop more powerful computers using homegrown processors.

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/gravitas-apple-and-meta-gave-user-data-to-hackers-467554/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

The report hints that the company might be releasing the new products in the next few months.

Currently, at least nine Mac models with four different M2-based chips are being tested by Apple.

M2 chips are the successors to the M1 line that were launched in 2020 to accelerate machine learning (ML) tasks.

Following Apple's split with Intel Corp, the company has gradually replaced its chips with a more advanced line.

According to the logs which were corroborated by people familiar with the matter, Apple is also a Mac mini with an M1 Pro Chip.

The report states that Apple had used the same processor in the entry-level 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.

Apple had introduced a faster chip for a new desktop in March. Its Mac division has resurged in the last two years during the coronavirus pandemic.

In the last fiscal year, the company had earned $35.2 billion in sales. This is approximately 10 per cent of Apple's entire business.

Apple is internally testing new models of MacBook series: Report

As China's harsh Covid lockdown continues to disrupt normal life in Shanghai, another Apple manufacturer has decided to shut shop as the city struggles to contain new infections.

One of Apple’s top iPhone suppliers Pegatron on Tuesday said that it is halting its operations in its two facilities until further orders.

“The date of factory resumption is to be advised by the local government," the company said in a statement, adding that it would work with officials to resume operations "as soon as possible."

This might come as a major blow to Apple as the Taiwanese company is responsible for making “roughly” 20 to 30 per cent of all iPhones.

Notably, Quanta, which helps make MacBooks, and iPad maker Compal Electronics, have also halted production at their sites in Shanghai, according to Nikkei Asia,

This decision comes a month after Foxconn, another iPhone manufacturer, halted operations in the Chinese tech hub of Shenzhen in the wake of China’s “zero-Covid policy”.

Foxconn has "resumed fundamental operations" in Shenzhen as of late March, the company said.

With several Apple suppliers suspending their operations, the tech firm is likely to face supply crunch. So far, it is not immediately clear which types of manufacturing would be affected following Pegatron’s move.

Shanghai, the city of 26 million and home to major international companies, has become the epicentre of China’s latest COVID-19 surge.

For the past several weeks, Shanghai has been reporting more than 26,000 cases every day. In the past month, the city has recorded more than 220,000 Covid cases.

The majority of the city still remains under harsh lockdown that prohibits the residents to move outside even for purchasing essential items.
