Alphabet unit Google, Meta and other large online platforms will have to do more to tackle illegal content or risk hefty fines under new internet rules agreed between&nbsp;European Union countries and&nbsp;EU&nbsp;lawmakers on Saturday.

The agreement came after more than 16 hours of negotiations. The Digital Services Act (DSA) is the second prong of&nbsp;EU&nbsp;antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager's strategy to rein in Alphabet unit Google, Meta and other U.S. tech giants.

Last month, she won backing from the 27-country bloc and lawmakers for landmark rules called the Digital Markets Act (DMA) that could force Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta and Microsoft to change their core business practices in&nbsp;Europe.

"We have a deal on the DSA: The Digital Services Act will make sure that what is illegal offline is also seen and dealt with as illegal online - not as a slogan, as reality," Vestager said in a tweet.

EU&nbsp;lawmaker Dita Charanzova, who had called for such rules eight years ago, welcomed the agreement.

"Google, Meta and other large online platforms will have to act to better protect their users.&nbsp;Europe has made clear that they cannot act as independent digital islands," she said in a statement.

In a statement, Google said: "As the law is finalised and implemented, the details will matter. We look forward to working with policymakers to get the remaining technical details right to ensure the law works for everyone."

Under the DSA, the companies face fines up to 6 per cent&nbsp;of their global turnover for violating the rules while repeated breaches could see them banned from doing business in the&nbsp;EU.

The new rules ban targeted advertising aimed at children or based on sensitive data such as religion, gender, race and political opinions. Dark patterns, which are tactics that mislead people into giving personal data to companies online, will also be prohibited.

Very large online platforms and online search engines will be required to take specific measures during a crisis. The move was triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the related disinformation.

The companies could be forced to hand over data related to their algorithms to regulators and researchers.

The companies also face a yearly fee up to 0.05 per cent&nbsp;of worldwide annual revenue to cover the costs of monitoring their compliance.

EU&nbsp;lawmaker Martin Schirdewan criticised the exemption granted to medium-sized companies.

"Under pressure from the conservatives, an exception rule for medium-sized companies was integrated, this is a mistake. Due to the large number of companies that fall under this definition in the digital sector, the exception is like a loophole," he said.

The DSA will be enforced in 2024.

Employees working in at least three other Apple stores are also attempting to organize, according to The Washington Post.

According to the logs which were corroborated by people familiar with the matter, Apple is also a Mac mini with an M1 Pro Chip.

The report states that Apple had used the same processor in the entry-level 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.

Apple had introduced a faster chip for a new desktop in March. Its Mac division has resurged in the last two years during the coronavirus pandemic.

In the last fiscal year, the company had earned $35.2 billion in sales. This is approximately 10 per cent of Apple's entire business.

One of Apple’s top iPhone suppliers Pegatron on Tuesday said that it is halting its operations in its two facilities until further orders.

“The date of factory resumption is to be advised by the local government," the company said in a statement, adding that it would work with officials to resume operations "as soon as possible."

This might come as a major blow to Apple as the Taiwanese company is responsible for making “roughly” 20 to 30 per cent of all iPhones.

Notably, Quanta, which helps make MacBooks, and iPad maker Compal Electronics, have also halted production at their sites in Shanghai, according to Nikkei Asia,

This decision comes a month after Foxconn, another iPhone manufacturer, halted operations in the Chinese tech hub of Shenzhen in the wake of China’s “zero-Covid policy”.

Foxconn has "resumed fundamental operations" in Shenzhen as of late March, the company said.

With several Apple suppliers suspending their operations, the tech firm is likely to face supply crunch. So far, it is not immediately clear which types of manufacturing would be affected following Pegatron’s move.

Shanghai, the city of 26 million and home to major international companies, has become the epicentre of China’s latest COVID-19 surge.

May 10 is the deadline for the companies to purchase the ITT following which the BCCI will spend a month in evaluating the tender documents. The IPL&nbsp;media rights will be sold via an e-auction in the second week of June and the Indian cricket board is expected to fetch a revenue of a staggering 7.2 billion USD from the deal.

The BCCI is likely to earn almost three times the amount&nbsp;it had when IPL media rights were sold for the ongoing 2018-22 cycle. BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the revenue coming from the media rights deal will be invested to improve the domestic cricket infrastructure in India.

"Transparency will be the key and the revenues coming from sale or rights will be directed to India's domestic structure, better infrastructure and welfare of the cricketing fraternity," BCCI secretary Jay Shah had said.

According to people such demands are usually provided with a search warrant or subpoena signed by a judge. However, emergency requests don't require a court order.&nbsp;

The report mentioned that the same hackers sent a forged legal request to Snap Inc, but it's unclear whether the company has provided the data in response. It's also unclear that hoe many times the company has provided data in response to forged legal requests.&nbsp;

As per the reports, cybersecurity experts suspect that some of the hackers are sending these forged requests are minors located in the UK and the US.&nbsp;

Seven people were recently arrested by the City of London Police in connection with an investigation into the lapsus$ hacking group, the investigation is still going.&nbsp;

An Apple representative referred a section of its law enforcement guidelines to Bloomberg News. According to the guidelines, a government supervisor or law enforcement agent who submitted the request "may be called and asked to confirm to Apple that the emergency request was legitimate".&nbsp;

In response, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said, "We review every data request for legal sufficiency and use advanced systems and processes to validate law enforcement requests and detect abuse."&nbsp;

"We block known compromised accounts from making requests and work with law enforcement to respond to incidents involving suspected fraudulent requests, as we have done in this case," Stone added.&nbsp;

Cyber expert Brian Krebs wrote on Tuesday that criminal hackers have been compromising email accounts or websites tied to police or government and claiming they can't wait for a judge's order for information because it's an "urgent matter of life and death".&nbsp;

Krebs noted that the lack of a unitary, national system for these type of requests is one of the key problems associated with them, as companies end up deciding how to deal with them.&nbsp;

"To make matters more complicated, there are tens of thousands of police jurisdictions around the world — including roughly 18,000 in the United States alone&nbsp;— and all it takes for hackers to succeed is illicit access to a single police email account," he wrote.&nbsp;

The Commission wants to maintain its leading position, Vestager said.

"I'm announcing today that in the coming months we are going to launch an evaluation of Regulation 1/2003, the central plank of our&nbsp;antitrust&nbsp;enforcement framework," Vestager told a conference organised by economic consultancy CRA.

"It is important that we hear the views of stakeholders concerning what has worked well, and where there is scope for more efficient and effective procedures and enforcement tools; making sure Regulation 1 is truly 'fit for the digital age'," she said.

For about 40 students who hailed from very diverse backgrounds, belonged to different parts of Tamil Nadu, in Southern India, it was their first-ever photography workshop.

Conducted amid the pandemic, the training in mobile photography was imparted both in online and offline mode, depending on where the students were from. 'Composition, framing, lighting, exposure' were some of the finer aspects of photography that the school students, aged between 13 and 19 had learnt. At the end of their training, their work was even framed and exhibited at the iconic Egmore museum in Chennai.

The frames on display showed pets, birds, architectural landmarks, portraits, patterns and what not! But the feelings of the first-time exhibitors were even more vivid.

"This is the first time I've attended a Photography session and I'm so excited that our work is being displayed at the museum" said S. Asreen Banu, a student from Chennai. For Aishwarya, a speech-impaired student from Chennai, photography is more than a mere hobby, it’s a means of expressing herself.

"I'm very happy that my parents and other visitors will be able to see the pictures that we have clicked" she said.

"We are a non-profit foundation that has been teaching photography since 2018. We work a lot with iPhones and we lent these phones to the students for this project (to ensure everyone had access to the same gear). They were asked to click everything that was a quintessential representation of Tamil Nadu, so that we could exhibit the best work in as large as 4feet by 8 feet prints" Varun Gupta, CO-Founder, Chennai Photo Biennale Foundation told WION.

Negotiators from the European Parliament and EU member states agreed on Thursday on a landmark law to curb the market dominance of US big tech giants such as Google, Meta, Amazon and Apple.

Meeting in Brussels the lawmakers nailed down a long list of do's and don'ts that will single out the world's most iconic web giants as internet "gatekeepers" subject to special rules.

The "Digital Markets Act" (DMA) has sped through the bloc's legislative procedures and is designed to protect consumers and give rivals a better chance to survive against the world's powerful&nbsp;tech&nbsp;juggernauts.

"The agreement ushers in a new era of&nbsp;tech&nbsp;regulation worldwide," said German MEP Andreas Schwab, who led the negotiations for the European Parliament.

"The Digital Markets Act puts an end to the ever-increasing dominance of&nbsp;Big&nbsp;Tech&nbsp;companies," he added.&nbsp;

The main point of the&nbsp;law&nbsp;is to avert the years of procedures and court battles needed to punish&nbsp;Big&nbsp;Tech's monopolistic behaviour where cases can end with huge fines but little change in how the giants do business.

Once implemented, the&nbsp;law&nbsp;will give Brussels unprecedented authority to keep an eye&nbsp;on&nbsp;decisions by the giants, especially when they pull out the chequebook to buy up promising startups.

"The gatekeepers -- they now have to take responsibility," said the&nbsp;EU's competition supremo Margrethe Vestager.

"A number of things they can do, a number of things they can't do, and that of course gives everyone a fair chance," she added.

The&nbsp;law&nbsp;contains about 20 rules that in many cases target practices by&nbsp;Big&nbsp;Tech&nbsp;that have gone against the bloc's rules on competition, but which Brussels has struggled to enforce.

Apple would also be forced to loosen its grip&nbsp;on&nbsp;the iPhone, with users allowed to uninstall its Safari web browser and other company-imposed apps that users cannot currently delete.

In a statement, Apple swiftly expressed regret over the&nbsp;law, saying it was "concerned that some provisions of the DMA will create unnecessary privacy and security vulnerabilities for our users".

After a furious campaign by influential MEPs, the&nbsp;law&nbsp;also forces messaging services such as Meta-owned WhatsApp to make themselves available to users&nbsp;on&nbsp;other services such as Signal or Apple's iMessage, and vice-versa.

France, which holds the&nbsp;EU&nbsp;presidency and negotiated&nbsp;on&nbsp;behalf of the bloc's 27 member states, said the&nbsp;law&nbsp;would deliver "concrete impacts&nbsp;on&nbsp;the lives of European citizens".

"We are talking about the goods you buy online, the smartphone you use every day, and the services you use every day," said France's digital affairs minister, Cedric O.

Comply or Challenge

Violation of the rules could lead to fines as high as 10 percent of a company's annual global sales and even 20 percent for repeat offenders.

The DMA "will have a profound impact&nbsp;on&nbsp;the way some gatekeepers' operations are currently conducted," said lawyer Katrin Schallenberg, a partner at Clifford Chance.

"Clearly, companies affected... are already working&nbsp;on&nbsp;ways to comply with or even challenge the regulation," she added.

The&nbsp;Big&nbsp;Tech&nbsp;companies have lobbied hard against the new rules and the firms have been defended in Washington, where it is alleged that the new&nbsp;law&nbsp;unfairly targets US companies.&nbsp;

With the deal now&nbsp;reached by&nbsp;negotiators, the DMA now faces final votes in a full session of the European Parliament as well as by ministers from the&nbsp;EU's 27 member states.

The rules could come into place starting&nbsp;on&nbsp;January 1, 2023, though&nbsp;tech&nbsp;companies are asking for more time to implement the&nbsp;law.

Although Russia does not account for a significant revenue share for Apple products, the tech giant's exit will likely leave a mark on its smartphone sales that have been growing in the country. 
 
Data presented by Burga indicates that based on vendor, Apple accounts for 15 per cent of the Russian smartphone sales to rank third overall. 
 
South Korea's Samsung occupies the top position with 34 per cent followed by Xiaomi at the third spot at 26 per cent. 
 
Realme has a share of 8 per cent, followed by Poco at 3 per cent, while other smaller brands account for 14 per cent, the Burga report mentioned. 
 
Elsewhere, as of 2021, Russia's smartphone sales stood at 730 billion ($7.6 billion).

Contactless, or tap-to-pay, payment systems have long been popular outside the US as the default way of paying for goods and services. But tap-to-pay has grown in popularity in the US in recent years, particularly during the pandemic when customers and merchants wanted to avoid as much physical interaction with cash and cards as possible.&nbsp;

The tap-to-pay feature will use the iPhone’s existing NFC chip that was being used to transmit payments down to a payment terminal. It will be available to developers via an iOS software update this spring. It will be up to developers and payment-services companies to add the capability to their point-of-sale software.

Stressing on the services privacy feature, the iPhone-maker said it would not know what was being purchased or who was buying it, stressing on the services privacy feature.

NSO Group is facing daunting financial and legal challenges,&nbsp;including the threat of default on more than $300 million in debt,&nbsp;after governments used Pegasus spyware to spy on dissidents, journalists, diplomats, and human rights activists from countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, and the United States.

The US blacklisting of NSO has effectively barred US companies from supplying technology to the Israeli firm.

The stalking behaviour continued in the next year. In 2021, the woman drove to Cook's home in Paulo Alto in California and asked to speak with him. Local police responded to this. They did not find any weapon with the woman.

Apple says that the woman opened fraudulent corporations listing Tim Cook as director and even entered Cook's home address as contact address for the company.

A hearing in this entire matter has been scheduled on March 29. The restraining order expires on this day.

This is not the first time Apple has applied for a restraining order. The company was granted it in early 2020 against another person who the company said stalked Tim Cook.

In a recent interview, India’s junior Information and Technology (IT) minister&nbsp;Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said that the government is talking with tech companies to come up with an indigenous operating system (OS).

“There is no third one. Therefore, in a lot of ways there is tremendous interest in MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) and in the Government of India to even create a new handset operating system. We are talking to people. We are looking at a policy for that," Chandrasekhar told PTI news agency.

The government is looking for capabilities within start-up and academic ecosystems for the development of the OS, he said.

“If there is some real capability then we will be very much interested in developing that area because that will create an alternative to&nbsp;iOS&nbsp;and&nbsp;Android&nbsp;which then an Indian brand can grow," Chandrasekhar said.

In the last few years, Android and iOS have ruled the mobile OS market. According to Statcounter, a web traffic analysis website, Android OS rules the roost with 70 per cent market share, while iOS is at a distant second with 29.24 per cent.

Microsoft tried to break the duopoly and had even acquired Nokia to push out Windows phones, but it failed miserably.

Mozilla's Firefox OS was discontinued after efforts to crack India's mobile market with low-cost devices failed. The Linux Foundation's Tizen also didn’t find any takers.

China's government has promoted Linux-derived Kylin OS for locals, but it has not won much market share.

While Russia’s Astra Linux is only limited to the nation’s military.

A new policy introduced by tech giant Apple requires its employees to show proof of the Covid booster shot, states a report by The Verge. "Due to waning efficacy of the primary series of COVID-19 vaccines and the emergence of highly transmissible variants such as Omicron, a booster shot is now part of staying up to date with your COVID-19 vaccination to protect against severe disease," the memo read.

As per the report, starting from January 24, unvaccinated employees or people who have not submitted vaccination proof will require a negative Covid test to enter&nbsp;Apple offices.&nbsp;

This comes at a time when many companies in the US have been imposing stricter Covid rules.&nbsp;

After almost a month-long shutdown, owing to poor living and dining facilities provided to workers, Taiwanese manufacturing giant Foxconn is gradually resuming operations at its iPhone assembly facility in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

Situated on a vast campus, the new dorm facilities that are being spruced up to accommodate female workers, were far better in every aspect, when compared to the old dorms that WION had visited. The buildings were much larger, and there was adequate open space and green cover in the buildings. The rooms were found to be up to 400 sq ft in size and were meant to accommodate six female workers in bunker beds that were to be installed.&nbsp;

According to the contractor responsible for the new facility, the female workers would be provided with beds, bed sheets, water heaters, shoe stands, rugs, first aid box etc.. Besides the meals provided during their working hours at the factory, they would also be provided food and water at the dorms. To ensure further safety and security, the entire campus would also be under CCTV camera surveillance.

The above amenities being provided at the new dorms are a significant improvement over the old dorms, where upto seven women had to stay in room that was hardly 150sqft in size. To another corner of the building was a space that was used as a cooking area. It was was just an open space with large vessels and hardly any kitchen-like facility or a semblance of cleanliness and hygiene standards. Parts of the cooking area were surrounded by the compound walls whereas another side was covered by a tin sheet. Just a few steps away from the cooking area was a closed toilet that looked extremely unclean even from the outside, nearby was also a passage that led to the common washrooms.&nbsp;

The new dorm that WION visited was among the many dorms that were being readied for the impending arrival of women workers, who are expected to arrive in batches. According to persons who were on site to inspect the dorms, a total of 17 new dorms were being readied as part of Foxconn offsite facilities.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, speaking to media, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister Thangam Thennarasu said that the Foxconn labour issue had be resolved amicably and he was happy to learn of the Foxconn plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, resuming operations after the return of women workers. He added that the factory would continue to function without any issues. According to him, the Chief Minister MK Stalin had intervened in the matter urged Foxconn and all relevant government departments to ensure that the workers were provided adequate facilities and even received an assurance from Foxconn in that regard.&nbsp;

The buildings were much larger, and there was adequate open space and green cover in the buildings. The rooms were found to be up to 400 sq ft in size and were meant to accommodate six female workers in bunker beds that were to be installed. The above amenities being provided at the new dorms are a significant improvement over the old dorms, where upto seven women had to stay in room that was hardly 150sqft in size. India: Full-fledged operations in sight, Foxconn readies new dorms for workers assembling iPhones

The Foxconn plant that assembles iPhones on the outskirts of Chennai city is witnessing the return of workers and resumption of operations, the Tamil Nadu state government officials said on Wednesday.

The workers are returning to the plant after nearly a month after the operations were suspended owing to concerns raised over hygiene, safety and standards the plant’s offsite dormitories.

Nearly 150 women workers had fallen ill after dining at one of the offsite dorms, leading to massive protests by the workers.&nbsp;

Following the protests, the factory was placed on probation by Apple, and the state government had to intervene to address workers’ welfare.

When the issue led to severe criticism against the Taiwanese and American tech giants, Foxconn and Apple finally acknowledged that the workers’ dorm rooms and dining areas didn’t meet their requirements. Foxconn had even apologised for its shortcomings.&nbsp;

Speaking to the media, Tamil Nadu’s industries minister Thangam Thennarasu said the issue was resolved amicable and expressed happiness over the resumption of operations of the Foxconn plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai.

He added that the factory would continue to function without any issues.

The tech giant said that they have put in place a rigorous monitoring system to ensure that workers raise any concerns they may have, including anonymously.

“We will gradually begin to welcome back team members as each offsite dormitory becomes ready and is approved. We continue to support our employees and thank them for their patience as we work through the improvements,” it said.

Apple had also issued a statement saying that Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur facility remains on probation and that they would continue to monitor the conditions very closely.

"For the past several weeks, teams from Apple, along with independent auditors, have been working with Foxconn to ensure a comprehensive set of corrective actions are implemented in the offsite accommodations and dining rooms at Sriperumbudur. Workers will start to return gradually as soon as we are certain our standards are being met in every dormitory and dining area”.
