Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has penned a heartfelt note for the departing chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Controversies and low points of Agarkar’s tenure
India’s ODI cricket peaked during the home World Cup in 2023, only for Australia to beat India in the final and break a billion hearts. Mohammed Shami, who starred for the Men in Blue in that tournament, picking up 23 wickets in seven matches, was amongst the top names who were phased out of white-ball squads following the Champions Trophy success. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who returned to the Indian squad for the forthcoming New Zealand T20Is after nearly four years with Ojha leading the selection panel, also never got his turn during Agarkar’s spell as the chief selector. Besides, uncertainty over the futures of two stalwarts, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and reports of Rohit quitting ODI cricket following the Lord’s ODI in July this year, turned things from bad to worse between the board, selection committee, the two players and the team management, leading to Agarkar’s exit. Moreover, several clean sweeps, including India's shocking 2-0 T20I series loss in Ireland and a 4-0 bashing at the hands of England on the previous UK tour, did not help the cause.

Gautam Gambhir penned a heartfelt note for outgoing chief selector Ajit Agarkar, praising his 'team first' mentality following his decision to step down as BCCI selection committee chairman.

‘Team first and team ahead’: India coach Gambhir pens heartfelt wish for chief selector Ajit Agarkar

With question marks being raised about Ajit Agarkar’s future as the head of the men’s selection committee, former Indian spinner and interim chief selector Pragyan Ojha will chair the meeting for the forthcoming New Zealand tour. The selectors postponed the squad announcement meeting on Monday (Oct 5) amid seamer Prasidh Krishna’s pending fitness report, but will likely announce T20I, ODI, Test and ‘A’ squads in the next 48 hours. A Times of India (TOI) report claims that with ‘A’ matches, starting on October 24, overlapping with the five T20Is, beginning October 22, the selection conundrum has gripped the Ojha-led committee. Even though the selectors will not dilute the two squads, handing red-ball exposure to the Test regulars remains at the top of their agenda during the squad announcement meeting. Also read| Root 'Can', 'Tough' for Kohli: Dinesh Karthik's verdict on passing Sachin Tendulkar A few India A fast bowlers might stay back to assist the Test team with preparations. Irani Cup hero Mukesh Kumar, who picked up eight wickets in Rest of India's victory over Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir, is back on the selectors’ radar, with the committee set to hand him an India-A call-up. His Bengal and India bowling partner, Akash Deep, is also back in the reckoning for a spot in the Test squad, with the selectors deliberating on ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah’s readiness. The management wants him to increase his workload before joining the India squad for two Tests against New Zealand.
Ishan Kishan set for Test call-up
A T20I mainstay and a formidable One-Day batter, Ishan Kishan, could be back in the Test side for the New Zealand series, per the report. The selectors are said to have initiated plans to keep Kishan in line for a Test recall. While they wanted to pick him for the ‘A’ games, the overlap of the white-ball series could force them to look towards Dhruv Jurel and Kumar Kushagra. Rishabh Pant is also expected to complete his preparations for the Test series by featuring in at least one ‘A’ game. Besides Pant, other Test regulars including Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan and even KL Rahul are expected to feature in one ‘A’ match. Since KL Rahul is also a key member of the ODI setup, he could feature in only the first ‘A’ match, before linking up with the One-Day squad in Auckland.
Reddy Ahead of Kuldeep
Unlike how India picked several spinners for their concluded Test tour of Sri Lanka, where Manav Suthar earned big praise for his standout performance, he could potentially miss out on the Test squad, alongside Kuldeep Yadav. With more focus on batters and batting all-rounders, Nitish Kumar Reddy could also be back playing Test cricket. Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja would also retain his place in the Test squad.
Fast Bowlers in Mix
Barring Bumrah, who is a sure starter, India would have options to pick from an army of pacers, including Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar and Akash Deep. In case of an injury to any of the pacers, the door could be open for either Auqib Nabi or Mukesh Kumar.

Indian cricket is working towards its next goal - the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 - and Rohit Sharma is one name keeping the selectors and the team management thinking. India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill has finally spoken about being left out of the T20 World Cup 2026 squad. Gill, who was serving as vice-captain of the T20I team after Gautam Gambhir became head coach, did not make the 15-member squad for the tournament. Speaking at a press conference on Saturday (Jan 10) before India’s ODI series against New Zealand, Gill said he had accepted the selectors’ decision and believed that everything would happen as per his destiny. “Firstly, it is my belief that in my life, I am where I am supposed to be. Whatever is written in my destiny, I will have it. As a player, I want to win games for my team, but having said that, I respect the selectors’ decision. I wish the T20 team the very best. I hope that they win the World Cup,” Shubman Gill said ahead of the India vs New Zealand ODI series. The selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, announced India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup on Saturday (Dec 20). In a surprise move, Shubman Gill, India’s T20 vice-captain, was left out of the 15-member squad. Gill’s recent struggles with the bat led the BCCI selection committee to drop him. This means he will miss his second consecutive T20 World Cup, having also missed last year’s tournament in the USA and West Indies. The selectors quickly clarified that Gill’s exclusion was not about his talent but a tactical decision based on the team combination India wants for the tournament, especially at the top of the batting order. “There’s no doubt about Shubman’s quality. He may not have scored as many runs recently, but that doesn’t change how highly we rate him. BCCI to replace two men's national team selectors, day after Ajit Agarkar's contract extension - Report

Ajit Agarkar, the BCCI chief selector, will continue in his role for another year after the Indian Cricket Board extended his contract till June 2026. Just two days after he and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav decided on the final 15 for the 2025 Asia Cup, which also made headlines for all good, bad, and ugly reasons, Agarkar received a significant vote of confidence from the apex body. His contract extension news, which came to light on Thursday (Aug 21), was reportedly finalised much earlier, even before the IPL 2025 season. An Indian Express report suggests that the BCCI had decided to retain Agarkar (in his role) a few months ago, impressed by his handling and control of Indian Cricket operations thus far. Since taking over the role in June 2023, the Agarkar-led selection panel has overseen a transitional phase and helped shape different Indian teams across formats.
