Manchester United are heading in the "right direction", according to sporting director Jason Wilcox as the Red Devils look to maintain an upturn in fortunes under Ruben Amorim. For the first time in the Poruguese's year-long reign, United have won three consecutive Premier League games to surge up to sixth in the table. Wilcox's appointment last year was one of a number of changes brought about by British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe acquiring a minority stake in the English giants. Also Read - England captain Brook can't 'put my finger on' dismal batting performance in New Zealand ODIs United finished 15th in the Premier League during Ratcliffe's first full season in charge of football operations and missed out completely on European football for only the second time in 30 years. However, Wilcox sees positive progress, even if there will be more "bumps in the road" in the club's quest to get back competing to win the Premier League and Champions League. "We are going in the right direction," Wilcox said in an interview with the club's in-house media. "We have a clear plan. I am sure there are going to be bumps in the road, but we have just got to make sure we stay calm irrespective of the noise outside." After two seasons without Champions League football, a top-four finish to return to Europe's elite competition is imperative both for United's prestige and to comply with financial sustainability regulations. Ratcliffe has been criticised for making swingeing cuts, including two rounds of redundancies, to balance the club's books. But United still splashed out £200 million ($264 million) on a new forward line of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko in the transfer market. That investment is beginning to bear fruit as Cunha netted his first goal in Saturday's 4-2 win over Brighton, while Mbeumo has struck three times in the last two games. "For us to get in the top four and consistently challenge for Champions League places, win Champions Leagues, win Premier Leagues, we have got to invest in the squad," added Wilcox. "We have got to buy the right players. The right players who are talented but also who can deal with the pressure, who can take the squad forward. "It is not always about just signing elite talent, they have got to have the right character and be somebody who can bring something different to the team." Mbeumo's fine form does cause one concern for Amorim as he is likely to miss a large chunk of United's busy festive period due to his participation with Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations. Ivory Coast's Amad Diallo could also miss up to six Premier League games, including a derby against Manchester City, during the tournament which runs from December 21 to January 18. "We are going to struggle a little bit, but we already knew that," said Amorim. "Other players are going to have the opportunity to help us, they are understanding the way we want to play. "The change of characteristics are not going to change the idea or the momentum of the team, but let's use Amad and Bryan in these games and then we will see in January."

Smriti Mandhana was looking in fine touch before a brilliant review by Australia ended her innings in the second semi-final of the Women's World Cup 2025 match on Thursday (Oct 30). Mandhana scored 24 off 24 before she was caught on leg side as India chased record 339 for a place in the final. The delivery by Kim Garth was leg-sided and Mandhana tried to work it towards the fine-leg area. The ball just grazed the bat as Aussies appealed but the on-field umpire gave it a wide. The decision was overturned after Australia decided to challenge the decision.

Mandhana can't believe she's out

After the on-field umpire gave Mandhana not out, Aussie skipper Alyssa Healy decided to take the DRS. Upon review, it was clear that the ball had just brushed past the Indian opener's bat and she was given out. Mandhana, however, couldn't believe the decision and was visibly disappointed while walking off the ground. Watch the wicket below:

Saudi Arabia were guaranteed the hosting of the Games for 12 years from 2025, when the agreement was first announced by the IOC in July last year.

Saudi Arabia will no longer stage the inaugural Esports Olympics scheduled to be held in 2027, the International Olympic Committee announced on Thursday. The IOC and the Saudi National Olympic Committee "mutually agreed that they will end their cooperation on the Olympic Esports Games", a statement said. The first Esports Games was originally slated to be held this year in Riyadh but were postponed in February. The Saudis were guaranteed the hosting of the Games for 12 years from 2025, when the agreement was first announced by the IOC in July last year. Then-IOC president Thomas Bach had been influential in the creation of the event but has since been replaced at the helm by Kirsty Coventry. Olympic Esports Series competitions, smaller virtual sports events run by the IOC, were held in 2021 and 2023. They were widely panned by gaming critics over the lack of traditional esports titles however. "Recently, the two parties and the Esports World Cup Foundation sat down again and reviewed this initiative," the IOC statement added. "They mutually agreed that they will end their cooperation on the Olympic Esports Games. At the same time, both parties are committed to pursuing their own esports ambitions on separate paths." The first two editions of the Esports World Cup, which includes many of the world's most popular games, were held in 2024 and earlier this year in Riyadh. It is organised by Saudi Arabia. "This approach will be a chance to better fit the Olympic Esports Games to the long-term ambitions of the Olympic movement and to spread the opportunities presented by the Olympic Esports Games more widely, with the objective of having the inaugural Games as soon as possible," the IOC said. Negotiations with game publishers, establishing national teams and anti-doping programmes have all also proved difficult. The IOC's "non-violence" criteria also means that many of the most popular games cannot be used. Saudi sports events are routinely accused of being used as a distraction from human rights violations, a practice dubbed "sportswashing". The Indian women’s team is all set to face Australia in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup on Thursday (Oct 30) at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. With just two steps away from lifting the World Cup title, both India and Australia will look to give their best shot for a place in the final. Defending champions Australia surged unbeaten into the Women's World Cup semi-finals and are clear favourites to defeat hosts India in front of an expected sell-out crowd. Seven-time champions Australia won six of their seven league matches to underline why they are the team to beat in the 50-over tournament, the other game being a washout. India and Australia clash at the 45,000-capacity DY Patil Stadium on the outskirts of Mumbai on Thursday after the first semi-final between England and South Africa in Guwahati on Wednesday. India will have the crowd firmly on their side and the country of 1.4 billion is desperate to win a first women's World Cup crown in its favourite sport. Australia suffered a few scares in the first stage, including when Pakistan reduced them to 76-7 in a match they eventually won convincingly by 107 runs. India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, also tested Australia by posting 330 but the title-holders overhauled the total with three wickets and one over to spare. Australia are sweating on the return of skipper Alyssa Healy, who missed the last two league matches with a calf injury after scoring 294 runs including two centuries in four innings. In their previous victory, over South Africa, Australia were clinical with King starring with best-ever World Cup bowling figures of 7-18. Australia beatable In contrast, India had a patchy run in the league phase, where they lost three successive matches before clinching the last semi-final spot. Opener Smriti Mandhana is in top form and leads the tournament batting with 365 runs including one ton in seven matches. But the home team suffered a blow when another in-form opener, Pratika Rawal, went out injured in their last league match and has been replaced by Shafali Verma for the semi-final. India have twice been runners-up, in 2005 and 2017 -- when they beat Australia in the semi-finals before losing to England. Since that semi-final defeat to India, Australia have been on a roll with 15 ODI World Cup wins in a row. Former India captain Mithali Raj said the current team can halt the Australian juggernaut. "I think now there is this thought that it's a possibility to beat this Australian side despite all the strengths that they boast," Raj told ESPNcricinfo.
