Yulia Putintseva crushes World No.1 Iga Swiatek's Wimbledon dream to reach fourth round
Russian-born Kazakhstani Yulia Putintseva crushed Iga Swiatek’s Wimbledon dream after she beat the World No.1 in one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history on Saturday (July 6). The contest played on Court No.1 saw Swiatek lose the match 3-6, 6-1, 6-2in complete dominance by the Kazakhstani star. The defeat also means Swiatek will have to wait at least until 2025 to get her hands on the coveted Wimbledon shield.
Swiatek outclassed
On a run of 21 consecutive wins, Switaek was the favourite against a player ranked 35th in the WTA rankings. However, she was stunned by the Kazakhstani player having won the opening set 3-6 at Court No.1. But things took an upside-down turn in the second and third sets where Swiatek managed to win only three games before winning the match. She was good with her forehand and capitalised on the breakpoints to book her place in the next round.
The upset means both the World No.1 and the defending champion are out of the Wimbledon in the first week. Earlier, Markéta Vondroušová who is the defending champion in the Wimbledon women’s singles was knocked out in the opening round by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain.

The defeat for Swiatek also means her dream to win the Wimbledon Championships once again remains incomplete. Her best performance at the SW19 came last year when she reached the quarterfinal. Grass court also remains the only surface where she has yet to win a Grand Slam. In her brilliant singles career, she has won four French Open titles while also pocketing the 2022 US Open. Like Wimbledon, Swiatek is yet to win the Australian Open as well with her best performance coming in 2022 when she reached the semis.
