Pakistan athlete Arshad Nadeem will be conferred with the country's second highest civil award Hilal–i-Imtiaz for winning a gold medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. Nadeem won Pakistan's first individual gold by clinching first position in the men's javelin throw final on Thursday (Aug 8).
The news of awarding Nadeem was announcedby Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari through a statement on Saturday (Aug 10).
“The President will confer the civil award upon Arshad Nadeem during a special ceremony to be held in recognition of his prominent performance in sports. The President will confer the civil award under Article 259 (2) of the Constitution,” read the statement.
In a post shared by President Secretariat Press on social media platform X, the president acknowledged Nadeem's outstanding feat on the global stage.
"Arshad Nadeem made the nation proud in the field of sports with excellent performance. His outstanding success at the global level has become a source of pride for the nation," read the post (translated by Google). Have a look at the post below:
Nadeem threw for 92.97 metres to set a new Olympic record for his gold medal win, becoming only the third athlete to win an individual medal for Pakistan at the Olympics.
India's Neeraj Chopra, who had won gold in the same event in Tokyo 2020, finished second with a throw of 89.45 metres at Paris 2024.
Arshad was uncontrollable after the historic win. Emotions got the better of him as the athlete – who was also struggling to get a new javelin five months ago – was overwhelmed.
Neeraj and Arshad fouled their first attempts while settling scores in their second.
There wasn’t much to read in their remaining throws other than Arshad’s last throw, which also breached the 90m (for the second time in the Olympic final), registering a 91.79m throw while Neeraj fouled in the rest of them.
