Just days later, India&rsquo;s top nuclear scientist, Homi Bhabha, went on All India Radio and said something remarkable: India could build 50 nuclear bombs for just $21 million. He claimed it was cheap and achievable, even for a country still struggling after Partition.
At the same time, Bhabha made it clear that if the world moved towards disarmament, India might not need to build bombs at all. But China, Britain, France, and others were busy building their arsenals. Disarmament wasn&rsquo;t happening.
India&rsquo;s signal, that it could go nuclear if it wanted, didn&rsquo;t go unnoticed by Pakistan.
<h2>Pakistan feared getting left behind</h2>
At that time, Pakistan&rsquo;s foreign minister was Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. In 1965, British journalist Patrick Keatley reported deep worries inside Pakistan&rsquo;s Defence Ministry. Officials feared that one morning, they might wake up to the news that India had become a nuclear power, and Pakistan would have no answer.

Bhutto famously said, &ldquo;If India builds the bomb, we will eat grass or leaves, even go hungry, but we will get one of our own.&rdquo;
Later that year, Bhutto and President Ayub Khan visited Beijing and met Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai. Bhutto would later claim that he asked for China&rsquo;s help with nuclear technology, though some historians don't believe that.

Although Pakistan officially says it only started working on nuclear weapons after India&rsquo;s 1974 test, the planning seems to have begun much earlier.
In January 1972, just weeks after Pakistan&rsquo;s defeat in the Bangladesh war, Bhutto called a meeting of scientists at Multan. There, he urged them to build a bomb, fast. He wanted Pakistan to match the timeline of America&rsquo;s Manhattan Project, which had developed the first nuclear bombs in three years.
For Bhutto, nuclear weapons weren&rsquo;t just about defence. After losing East Pakistan, he saw them as essential for survival. He also believed they would give Pakistan leverage over India and help him balance the power of the military at home.
<h2>But Pakistan faced big challenges</h2>
Unlike India, Pakistan didn&rsquo;t have the industrial strength or scientific know-how to build a bomb on its own. It needed outside help or another way.
In 1973, after an attempt to get technology from Britain failed, Pakistan quietly made a deal with Belgium to set up a small nuclear reprocessing plant. This allowed Pakistan to extract plutonium, the material needed for bombs, but only in small amounts.

Pakistan also began talks with France for a much larger reprocessing plant. At the time, France was not bound by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and could technically sell such technology. But the negotiations dragged on.
Later, Pakistan&rsquo;s top nuclear scientist Munir Ahmad Khan admitted that while they had hoped to build everything themselves, technical and financial barriers forced them to &ldquo;think differently.&rdquo;
By 1974, India&rsquo;s nuclear test, nicknamed the "Smiling Buddha", changed everything. The race was officially on.
Around this time, a Pakistani metallurgist named Abdul Qadeer Khan, working in Europe, offered his services to Bhutto. Khan said he could help Pakistan build its own nuclear bomb.
In early 1976, AQ Khan returned to Pakistan, carrying stolen blueprints from the Dutch company Urenco. These designs showed how to enrich uranium, the key to making a nuclear bomb. It was a massive breakthrough for Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the US was putting pressure on France to cancel its nuclear deal with Pakistan. France agreed, but not before Pakistan had learned a lot.
<h2>Quiet progress behind the scenes</h2>
Although France officially cancelled the reprocessing deal in 1978, it was too late. AQ Khan opened another path for Pakistan, which was uranium enrichment.
Building the technology took time, but by the late 1980s, Pakistan was believed to have a basic nuclear weapon.
During the tense military standoff known as Operation Brasstacks in 1986-87, Pakistan&rsquo;s implied nuclear capability likely helped deter full-scale war with India.
<h2>Pakistan goes public</h2>
In 1992, Pakistan&rsquo;s Foreign Secretary made it clear for the first time that Pakistan could assemble a nuclear bomb. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif later confirmed it more openly during a speech in Muzaffarabad, in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Even when the US tried to offer Pakistan advanced F-16 jets in exchange for slowing down its programme, Pakistan refused. The bomb had become a matter of national pride.
<h2>The tests of 1998</h2>
In May 1998, after India conducted nuclear tests, Pakistan responded with tests of its own.
The two countries then signed the Lahore Declaration, agreeing to improve communication and reduce the risk of nuclear war.
India later announced a "no first use" policy, promising not to launch a nuclear attack unless attacked first. Pakistan hasn&rsquo;t made such a commitment but insists its weapons are for defence only.

In a chilling account of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, a survivor has shared their harrowing experience of the April 22 "monstrous act" that killed 26 and injured many more.
Prasanna Kumar Bhat said that his brother, a senior Indian Army officer who was on vacation and accompanied them for the trip, saved him and 35 to 40 other people on the day terrorists opened fire on the tourists.
Bhat said that his family had postponed their trip by two days due to bad weather and arrived in Pahalgam around 12:30 pm on April 22.
They took a pony ride to Baisaran valley and were enjoying the majestic view when the attack occurred around 2:25 pm.
"We entered by the main gate like everyone else and went to one of the cafes set up on the left side of the entrance. We were taken away by the majestic view and the landscape and enjoyed it with a cup of tea and kawa," he wrote on X.
Bhat said that around 2 pm, he and his family decided to go up to take a stroll and click some photos, in a direction that was opposite to the entrance.

<h2>'I could see two bodies lying on the ground already'</h2>
The survivor recounted hearing the first gunshots and seeing two bodies lying on the ground. Bhat's brother, an Army officer, quickly assessed the situation and guided the group of 35-40 tourists to safety through a narrow opening in the fence.
"Barely a few mins later we heard the first 2 gun shots loudly around 02:25 pm. It was followed by a pin drop silence for a min and everyone was just comprehending what had happened and the kids playing all around were still enjoying the best picnic of their life," Bhat wrote in his X post.
"I could see two bodies lying on the ground already. My brother knew immediately that this was a terrorist attack. Then the hellfire broke, the gunshots came in bursts and chaos ensued. There was a cacophony of the crowd screaming out loud and running for their lives," he claimed.
The survivor described the terrifying experience of running down a muddy slope, slipping, and praying for their lives while the gunshots continued to echo through the valley. They managed to take cover in a narrow pit under trees and stayed put for an hour, petrified and hopeless.
&ldquo;My brother (Army officer) with his wife took cover near the mobile toilet. He managed to calm down the other people nearby. He quickly assessed the situation and understood that fire was coming from the entry point. So he guided us and 35-40 tourists in the opposite direction,&rdquo; he claimed.
<h2>'Will leave a permanent scar'</h2>
Recalling the horrific turn of events, Bhat said that it was terrifying to fathom that no place was safe and anything could have unfolded in the next moment.
"Just imagine the situation of having kids and elderly people with you and even worse scattered in the crowd and you don't know their location and whether they are safe or not. Words cannot describe the terror and horror one feels in such a situation and you feel really helpless," he said.
He said that he, along with his wife, sister-in-law and his brother, managed to take cover in a narrow pit under the trees a few hundred metres from the location "desperately praying for our lives."
He said that his brother managed to alert the unit stationed in &nbsp;Pahalgam and the army headquarters in Srinagar about the terror attack, and at around 03:40 pm, they heard the first sound of helicopters, "that gave the first signal that things have moved and help is on its way."
He said, &ldquo;They spotted us and, knowing that we were tourists, they assured us that the entire perimeter had been secured by the Army and it was safe for us to walk down the hill. We were still in shock, our brains and senses were numb at this point while only the gunshots and the horror ran in a loop in our mind.&rdquo;
&ldquo;We saw the people affected covered in blood being carried down and a range of emotions and thoughts and still unable to believe the events unfolded in the last 2 hours,&rdquo; Bhat added.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has transferred the probe into the Pahalgam terror attack to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

In a chilling account of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, a survivor has shared their harrowing experience of the April 22 "monstrous act" that killed 26 and injured many more. Prasanna Kumar Bhat said that his brother, a senior Indian Army officer who was on vacation and accompanied them for the trip, saved him and 35 to 40 other people on the day terrorists opened fire on the tourists. Bhat said that his family had postponed their trip by two days due to bad weather and arrived in Pahalgam around 12:30 pm on April 22. They took a pony ride to Baisaran valley and were enjoying the majestic view when the attack occurred around 2:25 pm. "We entered by the main gate like everyone else and went to one of the cafes set up on the left side of the entrance. We were taken away by the majestic view and the landscape and enjoyed it with a cup of tea and kawa," he wrote on X. "Barely a few mins later we heard the first 2 gun shots loudly around 02:25 pm. It was followed by a pin drop silence for a min and everyone was just comprehending what had happened and the kids playing all around were still enjoying the best picnic of their life," Bhat wrote in his X post. "I could see two bodies lying on the ground already. My brother knew immediately that this was a terrorist attack. Then the hellfire broke, the gunshots came in bursts and chaos ensued. There was a cacophony of the crowd screaming out loud and running for their lives," he claimed. The survivor described the terrifying experience of running down a muddy slope, slipping, and praying for their lives while the gunshots continued to echo through the valley. They managed to take cover in a narrow pit under trees and stayed put for an hour, petrified and hopeless. “My brother (Army officer) with his wife took cover near the mobile toilet. He managed to calm down the other people nearby. He quickly assessed the situation and understood that fire was coming from the entry point. So he guided us and 35-40 tourists in the opposite direction,” he claimed. 'Will leave a permanent scar' Recalling the horrific turn of events, Bhat said that it was terrifying to fathom that no place was safe and anything could have unfolded in the next moment. "Just imagine the situation of having kids and elderly people with you and even worse scattered in the crowd and you don't know their location and whether they are safe or not. Words cannot describe the terror and horror one feels in such a situation and you feel really helpless," he said. He said that he, along with his wife, sister-in-law and his brother, managed to take cover in a narrow pit under the trees a few hundred metres from the location "desperately praying for our lives." He said that his brother managed to alert the unit stationed in Pahalgam and the army headquarters in Srinagar about the terror attack, and at around 03:40 pm, they heard the first sound of helicopters, "that gave the first signal that things have moved and help is on its way." He said, “They spotted us and, knowing that we were tourists, they assured us that the entire perimeter had been secured by the Army and it was safe for us to walk down the hill. We were still in shock, our brains and senses were numb at this point while only the gunshots and the horror ran in a loop in our mind.” “We saw the people affected covered in blood being carried down and a range of emotions and thoughts and still unable to believe the events unfolded in the last 2 hours,” Bhat added. The victim, Ghulam Rasool Magray was inside his residence at Kandi Khas when the terrorists barged into the house and opened fire at him, the police further said.&nbsp;
