<p>But if you look more closely at the statistics, a different picture emerges.</p>

<p>If the number of rapes reported per hundred thousand people is analysed, India fares nowhere close to most European nations, Canada and the united states.</p>

<p>The report released in 2012 claims that Sweden tops the list with around 66 cases recorded per one hundred thousand citizens. Ever imagined the country that is home to Swiss Alps, that has an employment rate of almost 70 per cent could be one of the most unsafe nations in the world.</p>

<p>The next European nation that comes in the top ten list is Belgium with around 27 cases recorded per one hundred thousand people.. Belgium ranks sixth on the list of comparative numbers.</p>

<p>Belgium is followed by the United States of America where the national average of reported cases of sexual violence against women stands at 26.6.</p>

<p>The world's most powerful nation, the most developed one, a country with a GDP of almost 20 trillion dollars comes seventh on the list.</p>

<p>The last two spots on the list are also claimed by European nations. Norway is in the ninth position where the rate is 22.3 per cent and Finland is tenth where the rate is 18.7 per cent.</p>

<p>They forced the train to halt at the platform for one hour, according to officials. Someone pulled the emergency chain of the train when it began leaving the station. The passengers then gathered at the platform and raised slogans against Railway authorities and threatened they would not allow the train to move till the coaches were cleaned.</p>

<p>They claimed the toilets of some compartments were dirty and not working properly, while some of coaches had not been cleaned properly. Passengers alleged they had complained to the ticket checker who did not help.</p>

<p>Station Director B S Gill and railway police rushed to the spot and tried to persuade the irate passengers who remained steadfast on their demand. The officials then summoned a sanitation department team and all coaches, including toilets, were cleaned properly. Some of the passengers told reporters they would bring the matter to the notice of the Railway Minister.</p>

<p>Over a week ago, Congress’ Amritsar MP G S Aujla had claimed that he had to pull the emergency chain of a train to get tanks filled after passengers complained they were unable to use toilets due to lack of water.</p>

<p>Aujla, along with some senior Railways officials, had conducted a surprise inspection of a number of trains, including the Shatabdi Express, at the railway station at Amritsar, Punjab. He had claimed he had to pull the emergency chain of the Tata Muri Express to get its water tanks filled.</p>

Angry passengers hold up train for an hour over poor sanitation; get toilets, coaches cleaned

<p>The BJP is “insulting” 60 crore women in the country by comparing former prime minister Indira Gandhi to German dictator Adolf Hitler, senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot said on Tuesday.</p>

<p>His remark came a day after Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley drew a parallel between Hitler and Gandhi, saying both turned democracy into dictatorship.</p>

<p>In the second of a three-part series of an article ‘The Emergency Revisited’, Jaitley said unlike Hitler, Gandhi went a step ahead by endeavouring to transform India into a “dynastic democracy”.</p>

<p>The former Rajasthan chief minister alleged that people who were running the country, their government and party in a “dictatorial” manner were insulting Gandhi. “By insulting former prime minister Indira Gandhi, the BJP is insulting the 60 crore women of the country and their courage,” he said, adding that she was a symbol of women empowerment in the world.</p>

<p>The Modi government is working in a “dictatorial” manner and this is being stated by leaders of all hues, Gehlot alleged.</p>

<p>“This can be seen in the views expressed by BJP leaders L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Arun Shourie, Yashwant Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha and Ghamshyam Tiwari.</p>

<p>“The BJP has developed the art of speaking a lie a 100 times to make it look like the truth and this is what they are doing by speaking against the Emergency, imposed 43 years ago,” he said.</p>

<p>The Congress general secretary said Gandhi did not impose the Emergency to save her own chair, but to save the country.</p>

<p>“This is not told to the people of the country as to what state of affairs the country was brought into at that time,” Gehlot said. He said at that time, a leader threatened to damage railway tracks and another tried to instigate the military and the police to go against the state while touring another country.</p>

<p>“When such conditions are no longer there in the country, why is the government not allowing the legislature, the executive and the judiciary, and media to do their work,” Gehlot asked.</p>

<p>The Congress leader also asked why people staging ‘Andolan’ in Gujarat were being charged with sedition and farmers fired upon at different places. “The truth is that these people are from a fascist organisation and mindset, in whose dreams democracy does not come,” he said.</p>

<p>The BJP leaders are not telling the country that it was Gandhi’s efforts that led to the creation of Bangladesh from Pakistan and that former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had termed her as “Durga”, Gehlot said. “They also do not tell the country that she nationalised banks and launched a war against hoarders and black marketeers, and against the small kingdoms,” he said.</p>

<p>She was the person who initiated schemes to eliminate poverty, Gehlot said in a statement.</p>

The Modi government is working in a “dictatorial” manner and this is being stated by leaders of all hues, Gehlot alleged. “This can be seen in the views expressed by BJP leaders L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Arun Shourie, Yashwant Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha and Ghamshyam Tiwari. “The BJP has developed the art of speaking a lie a 100 times to make it look like the truth and this is what they are doing by speaking against the Emergency, imposed 43 years ago,” he said. The Congress general secretary said Gandhi did not impose the Emergency to save her own chair, but to save the country. “This is not told to the people of the country as to what state of affairs the country was brought into at that time,” Gehlot said. He said at that time, a leader threatened to damage railway tracks and another tried to instigate the military and the police to go against the state while touring another country. “When such conditions are no longer there in the country, why is the government not allowing the legislature, the executive and the judiciary, and media to do their work,” Gehlot asked. The Congress leader also asked why people staging ‘Andolan’ in Gujarat were being charged with sedition and farmers fired upon at different places. “The truth is that these people are from a fascist organisation and mindset, in whose dreams democracy does not come,” he said. The BJP leaders are not telling the country that it was Gandhi’s efforts that led to the creation of Bangladesh from Pakistan and that former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had termed her as “Durga”, Gehlot said. “They also do not tell the country that she nationalised banks and launched a war against hoarders and black marketeers, and against the small kingdoms,” he said. She was the person who initiated schemes to eliminate poverty, Gehlot said in a statement.

<p>India's Naval ship INS Sahyadri entered Pearl Harbour to take part in the multi-nation exercise RIMPAC (Rim of Pacific) to be held in Hawaii. The Pentagon had earlier withdrawn invitation to the Chinese Navy over tensions in the South China Sea.</p>

<p>The 26 nation naval drill will reportedly be attended by at least 25,000 military personnel.</p>

<p>Some of the biggest ships from US, Japan, Singapore and &nbsp;Philippines have already arrived at Pearl Harbour.</p>

<p>The &nbsp;Philippine Navy is sending its largest ship along with a &nbsp;frigate and a helicopter with a 700-man contingent. The naval exercise touted to be the world's largest drill will begin on June 27th and conclude on August 5th.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The exercise started in 1971 will witness the 26th exercise under the theme “Capable, Adaptive, Partners”. Reports said over 1,000 Canadian soldiers will also be taking part in the exercise with the Canadian defence force sending frigates, ships and a patrol aircraft.</p>

<p>More than 200 aircrafts will be taking part in the drill along with several ships and submarines.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The countries taking part in the mammoth exercise include India, US, UK, Canada, Singapore, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Philippines, the Netherlands, South Korea, Peru, New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, Israel, Malaysia, Mexico, &nbsp;Brunei, &nbsp;Australia, Brazil, &nbsp;Chile, France, &nbsp;Colombia, Germany, Tonga and Thailand.</p>

<p>This is the first time Vietnam, Israel, Brazil and Sri Lanka will be taking part in &nbsp;RIMPAC. Also, the use of land-based warfare would be a first-time feature during the exercise.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The exercise will be led by US commander &nbsp;Vice Adm. John D. Alexander of the US 3rd fleet.</p>

<p>A restaurant in Pune has started delivering food in steel lunch boxes after the Maharashtra Government imposed a ban on the use of plastic in the state.</p>

<p>As part of the initiative taken by the restaurant, the customers are asked to return boxes after the delivery.</p>

<p>Those who order take away food at the restaurant are asked to deposit Rs 200 which will be reimbursed on returning the box.</p>

<p>"We welcome the state government's decision to ban plastic in the state as it's in favour of the environment," Ganesh Shetty, the owner of the restaurant, told ANI.</p>

<p>However, Shetty shared that because of the plastic ban a lot of restaurant chains in the state are facing different issues.</p>

<p>"The government should have provided us some more time to arrange an alternative. Apps like Zomato and Swiggy have stopped working due to lack of delivery options. Customers are also facing inconvenience," he added.</p>

<p>On March 23, the Maharashtra government had issued a notification, imposing a ban on the manufacture, use, sale and distribution of all plastic materials like plastic bags, spoons, plates, bottles and thermocol items.</p>

<p>The changes have been proposed to Section 436A of CrPC, which provides for release of an inmate on bail after half of the maximum sentence has been served.</p>

<p>A separate accommodation for mothers in the postnatal stage, arrangement for women to visit their children, legal consultations conducted in confidentiality and the right to vote are some of the other recommendations made by ministry in its report.</p>

<p>The report contains a list of over 134 recommendations for improving the lives of women under incarceration, looking at issues pertaining to pregnancy and childbirth within jails, their mental health, issues of legal aid, and of reintegration into society after they are released.</p>

<p>The report will now be shared with the Ministry of Home Affairs so that it issues advisories to state officials for implementing the recommendations.</p>

<p>Speaking about the report, Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi said that this initiative should change the way prison administration perceives women inmates.</p>

<p>The report also recommends that a maximum time-frame may be decided for release of women prisoners after bail is granted but surety is not produced. Bail can be granted only after due scrutiny as provided under the law in such cases.</p>

<p>As per most recent data from the end of 2015, there are 4,19,623 persons in jail in India, of which, 17,834 (about 4.3 per cent) are women. Of these, 11,916 (66.8 per cent) are undertrial prisoners. An analysis of prison statistics at five-year intervals reveals an increasing number of women prisoners - from 3.3 per cent of all prisoners in 2000 to 4.3 per cent in 2015.</p>

<p>A majority of female inmates are in the age group of 30-50 years (50.5 per cent), followed by 18-30 years (31.3 per cent). Of the 1,401 prisons in India, 18 are exclusive for women, housing 2,985 female prisoners. A majority of women inmates are housed in women's enclosures of general prisons.</p>

Centre plans to provide bail to undertrial women

<p>With the imposition of Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir, the government is expected to tighten the noose around Kashmiri separatist leaders who were allegedly involved in terror funding and money laundering, officials said on Monday.</p>

<p>This would be done through coordinated action by the NIA and the ED, they said.</p>

<p>The issue was discussed threadbare at a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and attended by Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Yogesh Chander Modi, Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) Karnal Singh besides others.</p>

<p>A coordinated action is likely to be taken against the Kashmiri separatists who were allegedly involved in terror funding and money laundering, an official privy to the meeting said.</p>

<p>The meeting bears significance as it was held days after the central government imposed Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir, and has started offensives against terrorists involved in subversive activities in the state.</p>

<p>The NIA had already filed a charge sheet in a Delhi court against terror masterminds Hafiz Saeed and Syed Salahuddin and 10 Kashmiri separatists in a case of alleged terror funding and secessionist activities in the Valley.</p>

<p>Besides Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen head Salahuddin, the other 10 persons accused in the final report include Hurriyat leader Syed Shah Geelani's son-in-law Altaf Ahmed Shah, Geelani's personal assistant Bashir Ahmad Bhat, Aftab Ahmad Shah, media advisor and strategist of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Chairman of secessionist outfit National Front and Farooq Ahmad Dar, Chairman of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (R).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mohammad Akbar Khanday, media advisor of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (Geelani faction), Raja Mehrajuddin Kalwal, office-bearer of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Zahoor Ahmad Shah Watal, a Hawala conduit and two stone-pelters - Kamran Yusuf and Javed Ahmad Bhat are also accused in the report.</p>

<p>The ED is actively investigating at least a dozen terror financing cases in Jammu and Kashmir under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).</p>

<p>The ED had already framed charges against Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah and alleged Hawala dealer Muhammad Aslam Wani in a money laundering case.</p>

<p>Wani, arrested on August 6, 2017, had reportedly confessed that he passed on Hawala money amounting to Rs 2.25 crore to Shah.</p>

<p>Shah was arrested on July 25, 2017, on charges of money laundering in a case dating back to 2005 when the Delhi Police Special Cell had arrested Wani.&nbsp;</p>
