Former Bihar Chief Minister and BJP MP Sushil Kumar Modi
Sushil Kumar Modi, former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and prominent BJP leader, died at the age of 72 on Monday. Sushil Kumar Modi announced in April of this year that he was suffering from cancer and will not run in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections because of his health.
“I’m battling cancer for the last six months. Now, I think, time has come to let people know about this. I would be unable to campaign inLok Sabhaelections. I’ve informed PM everything. Always grateful and dedicated to the country, Bihar and the party," he had posted on X.
The former Rajya Sabha MP's mortal remains will be taken to his house in Patna's Rajendra Nagar area on Tuesday(May 14), and the last rituals will be held later that day.
Who was Sushil Kumar Modi?
Sushil Kumar Modi was born on January 5, 1952. He was involved in politics as a student activist at Patna University, where he eventually held the position of general secretary for the Students' Union in 1973. Lalu Prasad, his eventual political adversary, was the union's president at the time.

Sushil Modi held a variety of posts over his three-decade political career, including MLA, MLC, and Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members. He served as Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister from 2005 to 2013, and again from 2017 to 2020.
In 1990, the seasoned politician was elected MLA for the first time from the Patna Central constituency. He also led the opposition in the state assembly from 1996 until 2004.
Sushil Modi entered national politics in 2004 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bhagalpur. However, in 2005, he resigned from the Lok Sabha to join the legislative council and became Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister. He was a lifetime member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
