Tillerson is expected to meet senior Indian leaders with the US increasingly concerned over events in Afghanistan.
US secretary of state Rex Tillerson met India's external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj today ahead of his meeting with PM Modi later in the day.
Tillerson had arrived in India late last night on a three-day visit to strengthen India-US ties. Tillerson is expected to meet senior Indian leaders with the US increasingly concerned over events in Afghanistan.
The US secretary had met Pakistan PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi ahead of India visit today, with the Pak PM asserting that his country had "produced results" fighting terrorists in the region.
Tillerson had pushed for a more vigorous role for India during his talk at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington last week.
Tillerson had said India must "take leadership role in regional security", a move which was later welcomed by India's ministry of external affairs.
Pakistan and US have been at odds with each other over terrorist activities in the Pakistan-Afganistan region ever since President Trump laid out t his newAfganistan strategy.

Tillerson had said India must "take leadership role in regional security", a move which was later welcomed by India's ministry of external affairs.
US President Trump had accused Islamabad of harbouring "agents of chaos" during his speech in August while unveiling his Afghan strategy and had said he could no longer be "silent about Pakistan's safe havens for terrorist organizations".
The US president had called on India to play a greater role in Afghanistan which did not go down well with Pakistan officials.
