Congress leader Salman Khurshid faced extreme criticism over his post on Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman where he tried to take credit over the IAF pilot's confidence and valour exhibited during his captivity in Pakistan.

In a Twitter post on Saturday Khurshid wrote, "Many kudos for Wing Commander abhi Varthaman the face of India’s resistance to enemy aggression. Great poise and confidence in face of adversity. We are proud that he received his wings in 2004 and matured as fighter pilot during UPA".

After attracting criticism on the social media for "taking credit", Khurshid Sunday said that he had only "stated the truth".

"I had said that he (the pilot) joined the IAF during our tenure. I had only stated the truth," he told reporters.

Wing Commander Abhinandan was captured on February 27 by Pakistan following a dogfight between the two air forces in which his MIG-21 was shot down.

He was released from Pakistani custody on Friday night and was shifted to the Air Force Central Medical Establishment in Delhi.

Abhinandan is currently undergoing a series of medical tests.
