US, UK and France launch combined strikes on Syria chemical sites

President Trump on Friday announced that he has approved military strikes in Syria against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The announcement follows a suspected chemical gas attack from the Assad regime on a rebel-held town near the Syrian capital last weekend.

Trump said a combined operation with France and Britain was underway and that they were prepared to sustain the response until Syria stopped its use of chemical weapons.

US strikes on Syria: Several explosions heard in Damascus

A series of explosions were heard in Syria's capital Damascus early Saturday even as US President Donald Trump announced strikes on the country were underway.

At least six loud explosions were heard and smoke was seen rising over the Syrian capital, a witness told Reuters.

A second witness said the Barzah district of Damascus, the location of a major Syrian scientific research centre, had been hit in the strikes.

The strikes also hit a military research centre and warehouses in Syria's central Homs province.

Action will not be left without consequences: Russia on Syria strikes

Syria's ally Russia today warned of "consequences" after US-led strikes on the country in response to a suspected chemical attack.

In a statement, Russia's ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, said that Russia was being threatened and that it had warned that such action "would not be left without consequences".

He also said that "insulting the President of Russia was "unacceptable and inadmissible".

Commonwealth Games 2018: Mary Kom wins boxing gold

Indian boxer MC Mary Kom defeated Northern Ireland's Kristina O'Hara 5-0 to win the coveted gold in the 45-48kg category at the ongoing Commonwealth Games.

This medal took India's tally to 43, with Mary clinching boxing's first gold in this edition.

Kristina O'Hara was beaten on a unanimous points decision by the legendary Mary Kom.

This is the Indian boxer's first medal at Commonwealth Games and probably the last as she is expected to retire after this tournament.

Unnao rape case: CBI arrests BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday evening arrested BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in connection with the alleged rape of a minor girl in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh.

Sengar was taken into custody after intense questioning for 16 hours by a Central Bureau of Investigation team at its office on Naval Kishore Road in Lucknow, news agency PTI reported.

Earlier in the day, the Allahabad High Court ordered his immediate arrest, saying he was "influencing" the law and order machinery.
